This contemporary, thought-provoking novel explores the intersection of Islam and the West. It takes place in Boulder, Colorado, where Hadeel, a young woman from Kuwait arrives to look for the legacy of her deceased Aunt Amal. What she finds is totally different from what she had expected before coming to the U.S. Ms Alshalabi blends together unique historical references to Washington Irving, Percy Shelley and others with a love story as well as some suspense. She shows us the inner feelings of a contemporary girl struggling with issues that many young people face: love vs. duty and personal desires vs. family obligations. I loved the descriptions of Boulder and the details of Hadeel's life growing up in Kuwait. The authenticity of place brought realism to this well-written novel. The author's crisp prose and deep research into literature made reading a pleasure. I found Finding Amal educational, enlightening and entertaining. You will love this novel!
