Autopsy of a Fairytale #5

Evidence of a Folktale

Rate this book
Lights, Camera, What Big Teeth You Have…

After her brush with death on a frozen mountain and an upsetting conversation with her boyfriend Eamon Stone, Detective Isobel ‘Bel’ Emerson is desperate for her life to return to some semblance of normalcy. So when Aesop’s Files, Hollywood’s most popular paranormal crime drama, announces it’ll be filming its upcoming episodes on location in Bajka, she hopes the excitement, the famous actors, and the overtime pay will be a welcome reprieve from the madness. But when a crew member is found in the woods wearing only a red hooded cloak, gruesomely murdered in a way that mimics the show’s fictional deaths, she knows her prayers won’t be answered. Another predator has claimed Bajka as its hunting grounds.

As the body count rises and relationships strain, Bel battles her inner demons and races to stop a killer who’s always one step ahead of the police. The constant snow and the bodies in the woods remind her of her own recent kidnapping, forcing her to face the truth about Eamon’s past and their romance. Will their relationship survive the revelation? What’s more, will she survive this investigation? Because an elusive serial killer is hunting Hollywood’s favorite heartthrobs, and he shows no signs of stopping… not even when Bel ends up in his crosshairs.

Loosely inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, Evidence of a Folktale is book 5 in the Autopsy of a Fairytale series, a crime procedural romantic suspense perfect for those who like dark fairytales, murder mystery/crime procedurals (like AMC's The Killing, Netflix’s Lucifer, NCIS, Criminal Minds, or NBC's Hannibal), romance, found family, and a hint of fantasy. Each book will be based on a different fairytale, but Bel (and her Beast) will connect them all, her story ending on small cliffhangers in each book. *Series must be read in order*

This Is Definitely My New Favorite Series!!

Oh my heart!! I FREAKING LOVED this one!! I’ve loved every book from the start, but I think this one is my favorite so far!! So much happens in this book, and all the characters I’ve grown to care about were there. Although, I have to say I’m disappointed in Olivia she has turned out to be a real jerk. But Violet is still a GREAT friend to Bel and I love her. Of course Eamon and Cerberus are her best friends, true friends, and Bel would be lost without them!!

Scarano has book six coming out and I’m a FREAKING EXCITED FOR IT!!! I don’t ever want to leave this world and these characters!!

I think book 4 is still my favorite to date, but this one was still a good time. It felt a bit slower paced than the last few, but I appreciate how it felt more similar to the first 2.

V intrigued where the cliffhanger is leading us and so excited to continue on when more books are out!

We finally get to learn Eamon's full truth - what/who he is, where he came from, and why he fell in love so deeply with Isobel.
Bel finally admits out loud what we've all been waiting for.
I can't get over these characters and their stories. I just love this series. Evidence of a Folktale is most definitely my favorite of the series. I know I keep saying that, but each book gets better and better.
I found the storylines in each book are equally fascinating, and the character development and pacing are immaculate. The murder mystery twists on classic fairytales are unique and entertaining.
Every book in this series is unputdownable, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for book 6 to release.

If you are a reader who enjoys dark fairytale retellings, crime procedural books/shows, and romantic suspense, then I highly recommend The Autopsy of a Fairytale series by Nicole Scarano.

Evidence of a Folktale is the fifth book in Nicole Scarano’s Autopsy of a Fairytale series, picking up right where book four’s cliffhanger left off. The town of Bajka becomes the new filming location for the hit paranormal crime drama Aesop’s Files, but when bodies start turning up, Bel is pulled into another chilling investigation. This installment delivers a clever twist on the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale.

The story is engaging, the characters continue to shine, and the growing chemistry between Bel and Eamon is paced perfectly—their banter fits exactly where they are in their relationship. There’s plenty of mystery and unexpected turns to keep the pages flipping, and now I’m even more excited for the next book in the series.

Fun game of cat and mouse packaged up with a murder on the set of a tv show. I loved the setting of this one and the backstory. I also apperciated the growth happening between our MCs when it comes to their relationship.

I do hope that the damage done between Bel and Olivia (as well as Olivia and Ewan) is repaired soon. It was touch to watch them so out of sync in this book based on the Olivia's discovery of the truth of the town and the inhabitants of the town. As always, I enjoy these fantasy meets criminal minds series.

Honestly, I almost DNF’d after the first 4 chapters repeated the same thing over and over. I get the FMC went through some trauma in the last book but like she’s had near death experiences the whole series…now all the sudden she’s gonna flip a personality 180? No. That was annoying. The Eamon plot twist…weird but okay, I guess. Did I know who the killer was by the halfway point (again)? Yep but I’ve come this far so I’ll probably read the next one too.

Although it's my least favorite book in the series, it's still a good read. I found this one slow to start, predictable, and a little less captivating with the plot line.
Overall, I enjoyed the series. The way this one ended, it seems like there could be another book planned.

I did not enjoy this one as much as the others. However, I did not expect some of the ending. I enjoyed how all the characters names meant Red to go with the folktale! Eamon and Bel's relationship got on my nerves in this one though.

Love these book, they are so good. But in this one I did find that the MFC seemed to lose some of her balls. Now I get she has been through a lot in previous books, but it's almost like she is giving up her confidence and relying on the MMC too much.

REVIEW:
Evidence of a Folktale is the fifth book in the Autopsy of a Fairytale series with this one becoming another of my top favorites of the series. Detective Isobel ‘Bel’ Emerson and Eamon Stone have just been through an intense moment where she almost froze to death escaping a crazed killer while Eamon had to see a body double of Bel in the morgue and when he smelled that it wasn't her had to find her fast. Bel's new murder case is loosely inspired by Little Red Riding Hood with a Hollywood paranormal crime drama coming to Bajka to film there upcoming episodes. It was exciting to finally read where things where going between Bel and Eamon after the cliffhanger in book four as things were very intense at the hospital since Eamon almost broke up with Bel. The moment that Bel's father found out that Eamon had left her those scars was intense since it left her devastated when Eamon left her at her father's home without any warning.

When Eamon told Bel that he was building his house with her in mind and that she was his home was sweet to hear in their relationship after such intense life alter moments. It was a shock to finally find out what type of paranormal creature Eamon was the moment he finally decided to tell Bel about his bloody past. The moment that Bel dove into that car after Taron was one intense action scene that could have ended in a tragedy but thankfully Taron saved Bel in the end. When Bel finally figures out who the killer is was a bit surprising but it was also starting to become more clear to figure out just as Bel did which made the moment she confronted him exciting. Unfortunately Bel's friendship with Olivia was deeply affected after she found out Ewan was a bear shifter that Bel knew all about and didn't tell her. Nicole Scarano delivered a page-turning paranormal romantic suspense that had me on edge to find out what was going to happen next in the case, who the killer was and how things were going to end for Bel and Eamon.

Review:

4*
Firstly, let me say that if Nicole writes it I will read it. This is one of my favorite series to ever exist. The story gets better with every book. In this book we pick up directly where the 4th one ended. All of our favorite characters that we have grown to love are back. I loved the setting for this book since I am a sucker for cop/crime dramas. The town were Bel is a detective is set to host a popular paranormal crime drama and convention. As always things begin to go astray. Murders are happening again leaving Bel with no time to catch her breath from the previous case. The twists and turns of this book kept my attention and me turning the page waiting for the next clue. I was very surprised to see the character who ended up as the murderer. I will say that as we all know murder is wrong but in this case I'll let it slide. Rollo was definitely justified in his actions and I can understand why he took the path that he did.

As always in this series there are paranormal elements not only with the characters but a tough of black magic as well. The relationship between Bel and Eamon is top notch. I loved that we got to dive more into Eamon's background. I did not expect for him to drop the dracula is my dad comment... I also loved that we were able to see 2 characters actually communicate and help heal themselves and their relationship. It was difficult to see the strain between Bel and Olivia since there bond is so wonderful and special. I really hope that they can heal from this and return to being friends. With that said I do understand why Olivia feels betrays but I also understand Bel's justification for not divulging Ewan's secrets. I feel bad for Violet in this I can't image what it was like to begin loving Rollo and then to lose him in such a way and learn that he was ultimately a serial killer.

One of my most anticipated reads of 2025 and this book did not let me down at all
~ Thoughts ~
I have a new favourite book boyfriend – Eamon Stone – in this book he just absolutely melts my heart away
The way in which Nicole included references to Red Riding Hood gave me goosebumps …
*I am trying to avoid spoilers within my review but just warned reading further that there may be spoilers*
I love the plot for this story, it is a film crew coming to town and they film the supernatural things (like vampires, werewolves, ghosts etc) and considering the fairytales/fables/myths/folklores which have been told through out this series I love this premises for the film crew. If you like TVD/TO/Legacies, twilight or shows like Supernatural you are going to love this series espically this book 🧛🧙🐺🐻
I love the found family within this series, and I feel like it gets stronger with every book I read. I feel like I am a part of the family and I love seeing how the town loves and helps each other out. Small hints: David at the coffee shop ☕& Sherrif Griffin 👮
I love how Bel’s trauma within this series is not overlooked. I feel like a lot of books, tv shows & movies overlook a MC’s trauma but I love how this book shows Bel trying to rebuild her life after the events which occurred in Criminology of a Character. And something which I discovered as the book went on and that I love, is that is shows others (such as Eamon & Griffin) trying to recover and cope with the trauma that happened to Bel at the end Criminology of a Character.

“Evidence of a Folktale” is the fifth installment in the Autopsy of a Fairytale series, continuing the dark, twisted world Nicole Scarano has crafted where folklore, murder, and mystery intertwine. In this entry, the story follows another chilling string of murders, each one more mysterious and calculated than the last. The investigation pushes familiar characters deeper into the eerie blend of folklore and criminal intrigue, while hints of old tales and chilling truths bubble beneath the surface.

This book was my favorite of the series so far. I was caught up in the mystery, trying to solve it alongside the characters. By the third murder, I had a pretty strong suspicion of who the killer was, which was both satisfying and a little underwhelming. One odd thing I noticed was that all the victims and even the murderer shared last names starting with the letter “R.” I'm not sure if it was intentional or just an odd coincidence, but it stood out.

As for the characters, I’m still not a fan of Bel. She continues to be frustrating—always acting without thinking, and now she seems more afraid than ever. I get that she’s been through a lot, but her constant fear and dependence on Eamon are wearing thin. And speaking of Eamon, he’s become far too controlling and toxic for my taste. His obsessive reliance on Bel isn’t romantic anymore—it’s exhausting. Honestly, I wish I could hear the story from Olivia or Sherri Griffin’s point of view instead. They seem far more grounded and compelling than the leading duo.

That said, the worldbuilding continues to shine, and the way folklore is woven into the investigation remains a strong point. I’m still invested in the series, hoping for a shift in focus—or at least some serious growth from the main characters. -3 Stars!

Is It October Yet??? Scarano’s Stories And Plots Continue To Get Better And Better!

I was raving like a crazy fan girl about the fourth book in this series, but Evidence of a Folktale was a fantastic surprise all the way to the end! The character development is extremely well done and the interactions between characters is impossible to resist. I am hoping that Bel and Olivia can move past where they are and I am devastated for Violet, but I absolutely adore the direction Bel and Eamon’s relationship is going! I also love that Bel is taking her time and thinking things through before jumping in with both feet, unlike how she handles her cases most of the time. I honestly love everything about this book, and this series as a whole! Bel and her family (real and found) are going to be living rent free in my brain for a long time to come. I love the paranormal aspect of these mysteries and the way Scarano pivots and surprises us within the plot gives me thriller vibes. Her stories are always fascinating and well written and they draw you in until everything else disappears. If I wasn’t fan girling before, I definitely am now. Since I have to wait until October for my next fix in this series, I’m going to read some of her other novels and series. I seriously recommend reading this whole series… You should go do that now!

Lights, Camera, What Big Teeth You Have… (this has been inspired by the fairytale Little Red Riding Hood).

Aesop's Files a popular Hollywood paranormal show (think Supernatural) comes to Bajka town to film some episodes for the current season. Bel, Eamon and the rest of Bajka police force were hopeful for a peaceful time when suddenly a crew member has been found murdered in the woods wearing a red cloak.

Bel, Eamon and Bajka police force have a challenging time solving the murders and the killer isn't stopping until he gets what he wants.
Bel finally learns all about Eamon and she is shocked to find out what he really is.

Will Bel, Eamon and friends stop the murders in town or will it be too late as the body piles up?
Will Bel and Eamon's relationship continue after Bel learns the truth about Eamon?

I really liked reading this book, the flow was good and the plot throughout the book was very good. I really liked the characters in this book and my favourite character is Bel. She is very brave and daring.

Trigger warning ⚠️ - this book contains
V*olence, de@th and this book has a spice level 2/5.

Final Season!

Evidence of a Folktale by Nicole Scarano
This was another excellent installation of this series. We get to see the razzle-dazzle of a big Hollywood show coming in to film, and all the chaos that ensues.

I found the character development was strong in this book, and we see Bel truly start to realize just how many other beings there are.

I liked that Griffin was a bit more featured in this book. I like him. His character is excellent, and he is such a fantastic character. I love his relationship with Bel and how much he cares for her.

I am bummed come back about who the killer was in this book, because I wanted to like this character. They had a lot of potential. But their story was sad, and the way it played out was a type of justice.

Olivia is still being stubborn. While I understand why she is upset, the way she is treating Bel is starting to irritate me. I understand being upset and hurt, but she is also completely disregarding the way people had tried to protect her. Hopefully, they can work that out.

I am so excited for book 6 to come out!

The fifth book in this fairytale paranormal detective romance keeps giving. Eamon and Bel (and mustn't forget baby beast) continue to carry this storyline with their character growth and banter. Their flaws and emotions continue to shine off the page as their relationship develops amidst Bel's continued investigations to increasing paranormal crimes in and around Bajka. It was refreshing to see Bel's humanity and attempts to cope with her PTSD from prior cases rather than continuing to just paint her as the untouchable perfect heroine.

The less than perfect rating is mostly due to the killer being a little too obvious, but the rationale and growth of the supernatural elements continue to excel. The usual banter and interaction with some of the supporting characters also took a bit of turn, but I hope that's only groundwork for the next book in the series. Bel and Olivia's teamwork and banter comes in at a close second, and the storyline felt a little flat without it.

Evidence of a Folktale picks up exactly where the fourth book in the series left off and even though each book deals with a different murder mystery, they need to be read in order.

This was probably my least favourite in the series. I always love reading about Eamon and Bel's relationship but the chemistry was lacking in this book. They had some big issues to resolve which they did as mature adults in a loving relationship but the tension between them felt watered down. It also gets a bit tiring that Eamon spends most of his time chasing after Bel to protect her.

The most disappointing part of this book was I guessed who the murderer was very early on in the story. It felt too obvious and even the side kidnapping plot didn't hide the scent very well.

I've come this far so I will read the next book in the series. Hopefully that is the last because I'm not sure this town can handle any more murderers.

I absolutely adore this series! I physically could not put it down once I started. Eamon is absolutely perfect in my eyes. The way he cares for Bel and puts her first even with great costs to himself. You can just feel their love pour off the page. And I loved getting a few more Eamon POV moments. His thoughts and emotions are very clear from the beautiful description we get in Bel’s POV. But there’s just something about really being in Eamon’s head that makes me smile. There were so many passages that I had to reread multiple times before moving on because they just made me smile so much.
Now I have mixed emotions. Thrilled to have read the book, but insanely upset that it’s over. We’re 100% spoiled by Nicole since the next book is coming out in the fall. But waiting is nothing short of torture. May I please request a new book every month?

Perfection is not a big enough word!!!

Let me start out by saying I bought this book the day it was released and i finished it!!! SO FAST!!!! I could not put it down!!

Anyone who loves paranormal and crime books. Get yourself this series, I have honestly not read a book this good in a LOOOONG time.

The constant twists and turns keep you on your toes. I sit with my work colleages and discuss theories on how the murders might be presented, or who the possible new suspects may be and what motive they have for the crimes being committed... Like perfection is not a big enough word to describe how amazing this book is, how amazing this series is, how amazing this writer is!

I cant wait for the next book to be published, i cant wait to find out what it will be based on so that i can swap theories with my work besties while we wait for the publishing date !!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟

6 star read

This has to be one of the best in the series! It answers so many questions that other books presented but left unanswered. You saw the real breakdown of Bel and Eamon’s relationship and seeing the “human” side of Eamon so much more then ever before.

I also love that Nicole doesnt by pass the real trauma that would incur with the events and cases Bel has been through. She shows Bel struggling with certian events (and no I wont spoil it) but its refreshing to see a storyline truly carry through as if it is real life.

I am obsessed with all the characters of this book truly but seeing Bel with her sister made me smile and cry and wish I had that with mine.

I say this book is 💯 recommend and oh yay the the whole new crime and kiler in this book…. Well lets just say “what big balls they had” thinking they could get away with it!
