I’m probably biased because I unashamedly love Nate Drake and Uncharted, but this was a gorgeous book about the characters and settings of the Uncharted games.
I really liked seeing the concept art of the characters and the background of the landscapes and artifacts of the game.
Also - Nate Drake is hands down the hottest video game character ever. I love him!
This was so much fun! I loved getting to see the concept art, especially the characters and the environments. It was cool to see stuff that didn't make it into the games, as well as the iconic moments and locations. So much fun!
Note: I read this via Hoopla, and the text was really small and therefore hard to read. I would love to get a physical copy one day!
The best part of this book is getting to see the early concept art for locations and levels without any kind of techonlogical restriction. Most art books I've read have been for modern games that don't really have any restrictions in terms of what a player can do or see. But back in the old PS3 days, Uncharted was trying things that hadn't been done before, and some things that couldn't be accomplished at all back then. So it's really cool to see the ideas and concepts that were a little too far ahead of their time.
It's also nice to have some time to stop and admire the beautiful scenery. Whether it's massive temples, ancient cities or lush rain-forests, I like having the chance to admire them without running for my life in an insane firefight.
As usual with Dark Horse "Art Of..." books my only issue is that the book is way too short for three massive games, it's even pretty short for one game... but I guess if my biggest criticism is that it's too short, they're doing something right.
This is how you do an art book: large format to show off the artwork with very few pictures spanning two pages so you don’t lose part of the image in the book’s gulley. There were only 2 or 3 such pictures and they were all low-content. I’ve seen some books where every other page were two-page spreads with characters and vehicles smack dab in the middle of the image completely lost.
You either need a library copy or be very rich to see this book, as it’s currently going for $999! Thanks, library!
Similar to other "The Art of ____" books through Naughty Dog, this makes me want to play the games all over again. There is great nostalgia from the parts that were used directly, and plenty of inspiration through the creative art that was tweaked along the way, as Naughty Dog did a great job of showcasing the entire progression that led to their impressive final product. Certainly most enjoyable after playing the first three games, but the sheer skill and analytical procedure their design team goes through would likely still be of interest to those who have not played the games simply due to their clear passion and expertise.
I was so happy to finally get my hands on this! Some of the unused ideas they put in--mainly the underwater level for Drake's Fortune--make me really curious for what they'll do with U4. A lot of the art in the U2 section is similar to/the same as the art of U2 book though, I was kind of hoping for some new material and a little more character art for all the games.
A good book for hardcore fans and admirers of the series
It was quite an interesting book if you either play it all the time or just love the series. Little short though left me wanting more hopefully an extended edition maybe? Including the upcoming fourth game?
I love how very detailed these artworks are. It brings me joy on how the creators really show-off their creativity and efforts on bringing the Uncharted franchise to life. A definitely must see!!!
This art book has found the perfect balance between visuals and narration. Lots of great little insights on why characters or locations look the way they do, while leaving plenty of space to display the sketches, paintings and 3D character models in all their glory.
