This title is a nice addition to the abundant supply of snake books for early readers. A few things that set it apart from the others is the fact that it is part of the Icky Sticky Readers from Scholastic. The readers can engage in the content reading by adding topic specific stickers to the text. I think this element, while not appropriate for the library setting, is a good technique for reluctant readers or those who struggle with focus. Another element I liked was the quality photography. While some of the pages were a bit busy, the photography is clean and clear. The text is short and focused, but additional pieces of text encourage the reader to sound out new words and graphic aids encourage further thinking with comparisons. Overall, I think this would be a good addition to a classroom or personal collection.
Youngsters will love the cool photographs and easy-to-read, engaging text in this title devoted to snakes. One of the things that is especially neat about it is how there are stickers in the back that young readers can place in certain spots to indicate that they have read the material. "Now stick this!" is a great idea that allows readers to interact with the text and have a sense of accomplishment while they read. Who could ask for more in an introductory text devoted to those scary but fascinating reptiles? Ideal for an elementary science class, the book provides much information in bite-size chunks that won't overwhelm youngsters.
This book is an informational non-fiction that lists some of the scariest things about snakes while being very visually interesting, and includes stickers and games. It's target audience is 2nd grade. I chose a book called Verdi by Janell Cannon to pair with it. I just recently read Verdi with my little sister and it's about a little snake who doesn't want to change from the color yellow to green and get old and boring. Verdi does eventually turn green, but he always stays himself. I chose to pair these books together for a classroom because it would tend to two different types of readers. Scary Snakes lists scary things about snakes, while Verdi is a coming of age story. They contrast nicely.
