Our local library does a giant book sale once a year to help raise money for them and refresh the stock. I always love going because I grab so many random books I've never heard of or come by, The Corpse With the Sapphire Eyes being one of them. My picks typically are random - cool name, cool title, cool author name, etc. This one, I thought the title sounded so different and when I saw it was a mystery, I figured... why not?

This book is five into the series, but that didn't deter me. I was ready to learn about Cait and her upcoming nuptials to Bud. They picked one of the most beautiful locations, an isolated castle in Wales, yet they managed to find yet another place where a murder occurred. Bad luck, eh? A dead body on the stairs the day before the wedding seems a little inconvenient, but not when you have professionals who deal with death and the law system around it. It's just another Tuesday.

I liked this book, but I think reading the first five would have helped me understand the character dynamics a lot more. It bothered me personally, but I think most readers won't even bat an eyelash at it. I want to know how Cait and Bud got together, I want to understand the relationship between Cait and her sister Sian. I want to hear all about how Cait was on trial for the murder of her ex boyfriend and how she was exonerated. It all sounds so intriguing! A read for another day, I guess.

The story itself is relatively short at 240 pages, yet feels so much slower. I felt like I was reading a 500 page book at times. I personally didn't enjoy that aspect, but the writing itself was marvelous. I also learned a few Welsh words along the way.

I'll probably try to find the first books in this series when I'm out and about, but I'm not raving about this book. It's a great read, but not a great read for ME. Other readers will eat this book up.

Three out of five stars.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cathy Ace has a gift for these type of mysteries. The kind where you know someone in the building with you is a murderer. This time we are in a castle in Wales as Cait and Bud get ready for their wedding. The weather is awful and a bridge washes out meaning they and everyone else staying at the castle is stranded there. Cait’s sister, Sian, has flown in from Australia and Bud has plans for a special choir performance. Cait can deal with the weather but not another dead body. When she learns the choirmaster took a tumble down the stairs and broke his neck she knows she can relax because it was an accident the local authorities will take care of. But the bridge is out and the police could not respond and Cait finds herself questioning if the death may have been a murder. She and Bud decide to start an investigation of their own. Hopefully they will have things wrapped up quickly so they can get married as they had planned.

Castell Llwyd is quite a place and its inhabitants are quite the quirky bunch. Matriarch Alice Cadwallader owns the castle. At 92 years of age she is set in her ways and stubborn as a mule. She travels around the place at a pretty brisk clip in her wheelchair. Mrs. Jones is the cook and generally runs the house. Alice’s son. Owain and his daughter, Mair, her grandson, Idris and his wife Eirwen, all reside at the castle. Rhian Davies in the event planner for Castell Llwyd and her husband the choirmaster reside there as well. The choirmaster’s assistant and Alice’s nurse round out the band of suspects. Readers follow Bud and Cait on their investigation where the ruffle a few feathers and Cait uses her eidetic memory to try to put this puzzler of a mystery to rest.

I love going on these adventures with Cait and Bud. Wales sounds beautiful if you can look beyond the rainy weather. The castle is quite delightful with it’s up and down stairs to several floors and wings. You just know a place like this holds many secrets and so much history.

I know right away when I start reading one of these stories from Cathy Ace I will not be able to put them down and that was sure the case with The Corpse with the Sapphire Eyes. I like that my Kindle keeps track of my reading speed because I could see it increasing with each new page. The story builds and builds to a very surprising climax.

If you like you cozies on the traditional side like the great Agatha Christie, you will like this entire series!

Cait, her fiance Bud, and her sister Siân have traveled to Wales for Cait and Bud’s wedding. Ms. Ace doesn’t waste time and gets right down to business – by page 2 there is a dead body in the castle.

Castell Llwyd has quite the cast of characters, lead by the eccentric 92-year-old matriarch Alice Cadwallader. The suspects not only know each other, but many are related and (with the exception of one) they all live under the same roof. To add to the mystique there is the legend of a lost family treasure, complete with a cryptic poem on an old dish.

The setting plays an important role in the story – an old, isolated castle an hour’s drive from the nearest town. And of course, a storm comes up washing out the bridge, thus preventing anyone from coming or going (including the local police). A perfect setting for a classic whodunit.

With the help of Bud and Siân, Cait begins diving into the family dynamics and the possibility of treasure. As the reader, I was swept up in the many clues Cait unearthed, trying to figure out how they all come together to solve the puzzle. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t figure everything out – even Cait has a small surprise in the end.

An interesting cast of characters combined with a great classic whodunit setting makes this another fun outing with Cait Morgan.

This is a cozy mystery with interesting characters. There is plenty of drama, mysteries, treasures and murder. It is a clean read. Some of the secrets you can guess others I did not see coming.

Cait and Bud's wedding is going to take place in Wales in a castle. Of course it does not go as planned. It is raining and cold. Now a body is found at the bottom of the stairs.

Cait Morgan is from Wales but has lived in Canada for years. She is smart and can remember everything she sees. She is a professor of Criminology at University of Vancouver.

Bud Anderson is a retired detective of homicide. Bud is a widower.

The suspects are limited to those that are in the Castell Llwyd.

The setting was in Wales. There was some words in Welsh too. I have not read much about Wales and I am Welsh from 4 generations ago my family lived in Wales. I need to learn more about the Country and people.

It is set in a great big castle that has been added on a few different times over the years. Makes you want to go exploring.

Some of the story is at a slower pace. There is a bringing all the suspects together scenes a couple of times. As Cait asks questions and hints of things but says nothing till the big reveal scene.

I was given this ebook to read and in return agreed to give a honest review of The Corpse with the Sapphire Eyes and be part of it;s blog tour.

Strewth, Cathy Ace can sure pen a one room mystery, or in this case an isolated castle mystery. Cait Morgan and Bud Anderson are in Wales to get married, a violent storm hits and low and behold there is a dead body that turns up, everyone in the castle, the family that own and run the castle, the women who help, Cait's sister Siàn and an accompanist, all would like to believe it is an accident, but Cait needs to make sure before her wedding day. No police can get to the castle because of a major road accident and the storm.

I seldom read books in one day anymore, but I could not stop turning the pages of The Corpse With the Sapphire Eyes. I needed to know who in the small group of people (talk about a dysfunctional family), murdered the choirmaster. I loved all the characters, and of course the return of Cait and Bud. With only a couple of days to go before their wedding, Cait and Bud begin to investigate the crime and the people around them. I admit I kept changing my mind as to who did the deed and was surprised in the end. I had only part of the answer, although I loved not knowing until the end.

It was also great fun learning Welch words and trying to pronounce them, I cannot roll my r's without sounding like I am gargling.

As with all the previous Cait Morgan books, I highly recommend this book if you like traditional cozy type mysteries.

I'm a big fan of the Cait Morgan Mystery series by author Cathy Ace. The Corpse With the Sapphire Eyes is the fifth book in the series.

I love reading books that are set in interesting places. The Corpse With the Sapphire eyes is set in Wales. I've never been to Wales but some of my ancestors originated there so I found this book very interesting. I would love to visit Wales some day. I need to get past London!

Another huge plus to The Corpse With the Sapphire Eyes is that Cathy Ace is a fabulous writer. She has a great way with words. It is wonderful to read an intelligent woman's writing.

I enjoy the main character Cait Morgan. I suspect she may have a bit in common with author Cathy Ace...Cait is getting married in this book...or is she? Lots of roadblocks pop up including a body. A body who is an old boyfriend of Cait's sister...and oh my do Cait and her sister have an interesting relationship. I can relate to interesting relationships with siblings! And a very interesting group of characters fill the castle. Who not to suspect?!

Great mystery! Extremely well written. Already looking forward to the next one in the Cait Morgan series.

I have not read the other books in the series, but there was enough of the back stories to make this a stand alone. You will not be lost. Cait and Bud only have Cait's sister as a wedding guest. When they find a corpse at the foot of the stairs and the weather not cooperating and taking out the bridge it prevents the marriage taking place as they can not arrive or any help for that matter.

I was taken in from the very beginning the clues that Cait finds keep you glued to the book you do not want to put it down. As they try to solve the murder and find treasure. you will not be disappointed in this book at all. The author does as great job. I will be checking out the other books in this series.

Just finished The Corpse with the Sapphire Eyes by Cathy Ace and her books about Cait and Bud just get better and better. You meet Cait's sister, Sian and many more very interesting castle dwellers. It is hard to put down as you wander around with Cait trying to figure out riddles and of course who killed the person at the foot of the narrow staircase so that the wedding can take place as planned. I finished it much to fast, but had trouble putting it down. I loved that Cathy included a Welsh language lesson at the back of the book although I will probably never learn to say the words properly it was fun to try. Can't wait for their next adventure!

I was lucky to win this from goodreads.com first reads. I have not read any of the previous books from the series, but there were enough recaps through out the book to make this a stand alone. Cait and Bud have planned a destination wedding at a Welsh castle with only Cait's sister as a wedding guest, but all goes awry with a corpse at the foot of the stairs and terrible weather that washes out the bridge, stranding all at the castle and preventing any help or the wedding official to arrive. Very interesting how they solve the mystery of the castle treasure and find the murderer.

I won this book on Goodreads, have not read any of Cathy Aces other books. I really enjoyed the story and setting, a lot of mystery to get your mind working trying to figure it out. Loved the Characters. Thank you very much for this book. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy a good mystery.

An okay read

I'm not sure where I first heard of this book, or why it came to my attention. Possibly the Welsh thing; possibly the Ravelry connection, which (as a member of Ravelry myself) I found entertaining.

Unfortunately I kept being distracted by either clumsy wording, grammatically ambiguous phrases or referents, phrasing that screamed "plot point", and suchlike. (Example that doesn't spoil anything: a character in a power wheelchair would not, while zipping across a room, *remove her hand from the joystick* to wave, not when she has a perfectly good unoccupied hand.) It wasn't bad enough for me to quit reading, but I did have to make notations throughout the book in order to keep my editorial brain satisfied.

(Also, the formatting was distracting -- a combination of justified margins, no hyphenation to split words across lines, larger than average font, and a small screen because of reading this on my phone, all added up to a multitude of lines with big gaps between words. This is not the author's fault, and not everyone will be quite as affected by it as I was, but it did yank me out of the flow of reading.)

I also find myself wishing there had been more about Welsh culture and/or mythology -- especially mythology -- but that's my own craving. I *was* delighted to notice that the chapters were numbered in Welsh! ...I may be a little bit in love with all things Wales-related.

I do not regret reading this book, and if I had the opportunity to read other books in the series for free I probably would, but I doubt I would pay to read them.

This was a very easy read. I didn't LOVE it, and I didn't HATE it. For me, it wasn't a page turner. When that happens, I ignore everything else going on around me and just read. But perhaps at this busy time of year, that was a good thing.

Cozy mystery is a perfect category.

Although this is the first Cait Morgan Mystery that I've read, I didn't feel lost at any point in the story, and was able to pick up on the characters and their history without confusion.

I found the descriptions a bit much at times, particularly at the start of the story, it felt like every time we were introduced to a new person or location there was a lot of time taken to give explain the appearance of things. Not my cup of tea.

The mystery however, was intriguing, and the anticipation grew throughout the read. The conclusion of the matter was well rounded, though I would have like to find out what happened to the 'killers' in the end.

Thanks for an enjoyable read.

Bed and Cait are getting married. The location: a fantasy castle in the Welsh countryside not far from where Cait and her sister Sian grew up. But first the weather conspires against them, with a violent wind and rain storm, isolating everyone at the castle. Then a body is discovered. David Davies, a choirmaster, had apparently fallen down a staircase to his death. In addition, the Cadwallader family, who live in the castle, are extremely dysfunctional, and several are victims of malicious mischief. Can Cait and Bud sort everything out and be happily united? Excellent characterization and sense of place. Highly recommended.

As a knitter, my favorite part was when Sian and Mair discover they are both knitters, and actually "know" each other virtually on < a href="https://www.ravelry.com/account/login..., an online community for knitters, crocheters, and weavers.

Cait and Bud are to be married in a wonderfully romantic Wales castle. Something she dreamed of doing for a long time. Except the weather turned into a miserable torrid storm endangering the nuptials. Once they arrive, the couple immediately feel the atmosphere of the castle foreboding and it is not the weather - it is the relatives that reside within the castle full-time.
Cait's sister has also arrived. Their relationship has been distant and awkward for years. Once again, there is a death. It is assumed it was a nasty accident. With so much going on, it is difficult to stay positive. Once again, the couple investigate. This time, this reader figured things out fairly quickly,

Cait Morgan has scheduled her wedding on New Year’s Eve at a romantic castle, forgetting that Wales in winter is cold and dismal. The castle is, nevertheless, intriguing with its rumors of a long lost treasure. Cait’s fiancé, Bud, intends to surprise her with a male choir but that plan is foiled when the choirmaster is found dead at the foot of the stairs. Naturally, there is a storm that cuts off the castle and Cait and Bud have no choice but to investigate the death themselves. In spite of the clichés, not a bad read.

loved the book!

I love these books but really loved the first ones that were narrated by the author Cathy Ace. It would be great to be able to listen to all the books in the series with the proper Welsh pronunciation and accent.

Another well written mystery but there's a heck of a lot going on. This is the 5th in the series and truthfully, I've taken to just lightly skimming the wakeful dreaming part that's in every book. My bad I guess!

I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. The story is reminiscent of Agatha Christie's style. It's just supposed to be a quiet weekend, preparing for a small intimate wedding for guests, but murder happens and the bride just happens to be a criminal psychologist.

Mystery set in Wales. Sadly, the book dragged on a little too long for me which made it quite boring. I think that an effort should have been made to shorten it by quite a bit.
