This was a tense little thriller, about a serial killer, who uses people as target practice. And he's a damn good shooter, too.

A young couple, James and Eileen Eversman are on their way to start a new life. At least, that's the plan. On their way, they nearly drive into the ass-end of a cop's car who's vehicle is left in the middle of the road. Not a good start.

When they stop at a Fuel-N-Food to fill up on gas, Elle notices a creepy looking guy in a black jeep, paying them too much attention; especially her.

Further on into their journey, they see someone in the distance, and stop to give him assistance, and this is when their Rav4 breaks down. Another vehicle, with three occupants inside stops; their vehicle has broken down, too. What are the chances of two vehicles breaking down, next to each other? When one of them gets shot, it's a fight for survival from an enemy they cannot see; and they're on his turf. Will they be able to turn the odds in their favour? Luckily, James has Duct Tape.

In summation: I really enjoyed this book. The tension at times was excruciating, and listening to their inner monologues was amusing. I'll have to check out other books by the author, sometime.

I'm surprised by how much I liked this book. Not a genre a would normally pick up but I have read some of Taylor's other books which I liked. This one brought angst and mystering to the table. One for those that like sniper stories for sure.

Kitaip.
Nusikaltėlis nesislepia už padarytų nusikaltimų, įtampa apvelka veiksmą nuo pirmų dykumos kilometrų.
Santykiai pakapstomi nepaviršutiniškai.
Ir pabaiga-ne viskas taip paprasta kaip atrodo.
Visgi netrūko detalių, kurios tiesiog nebuvo įdomios man...
******************************************
In different way...
The criminal doesn't hide behind the committed crimes, the tension envelops the action from the first desert kilometers.
The relationships are dug up not superficially.
And the ending - not everything is as simple as it seems.
However, there were enough details that were simply not interesting to me...

The synopsis for Adams' Eyeshot sold me. What I got was much, much more.... A thought provoking, deeply disturbing and twisted psychological nightmare awaits.

Tom Zingarelli did a fantastic job with all the male characters. His female vocalizations are beyond awful. Hence, the loss of a star in my rating.

Marketed as " The Most Gripping Suspense Thriller You Will Ever Read"... Is this True...That Is the Question !!

Exciting, fast paced, suspensful thriller, with a action packed plot, with some added humour, although a little far fetched story and a little heavy on the background stories.

This a a difficult book to rate as had some great fast paced action, but then sometimes ruined by slow background stories.

Although the main characters were very good, especially James and Elle Eversman who are a young couple travelling through the Mojave desert on their way to a new life.

When their car mysteriously breaks down they are stranded in the middle of nowhere without much water and no cell-phone reception in the boiling heat with a marksman/sniper a mile away.

The action never stops, with this very different story which plays like a low budget action thriller film in a good way.

A great debut author, but a four star for the action and pace, but loosing a star to the slightly far fetched elements, and slower background stories.

But saying all the above I couldn't put the book down, the survival of the fittest !

As of this review, the author has published 3 books. I've now read all 3. And my conclusion: Write faster Taylor Adams. I want more!

This one, as well as No Exit and Our Last Night, are solid and real thrillers. And they also have a bit more depth and meaningfulness than you'd expect of an average standalone thriller. It's very light. Author provides them as casual subtleties underlying the main story. Kind of perfectly, because if you don't notice it doesn't take away from the exciting story. If you do notice, it's simply an added bonus.

This is a thriller that would make a great movie. I'd cast Kurt Russell as the husband. If you've seen the movie "Breakdown" and read this book, then I know you agree:)

Não me arrependi.

Man trileriai turi būti perskaitomi greitai, geriausia, vienu arba dviem įkvėpimais. Prisėdimais. Šįkart niekaip nepavyko to padaryti, nes vyko gyvenimas, bet trileris vis tiek patiko.

I’m a massive Taylor Adams fan. He’s fast paced, exciting, and all the books I’ve read have been a fast read. Eyeshot is his third I’ve read but his debut novel. I enjoyed this very much but it really wasn’t as good as No Exit or The Last Word for me.

This is about married couple James and Elle who are traveling to Tulsa to start over after a series of difficult life situations. They find themselves in the Mojave desert and when their car is destroyed they are out in the open when a homicidal maniac and master sniper is playing a game where their life is on the line.

It was a cool idea for a book and it’s short so it’s a quick ride. The middle third did feel a little stale but the last third was nonstop action that I really enjoyed.

I would recommend this book. It’s solid and fun. But one other thing I noticed about Taylor Adams is this is my third book of his and all 3 were in a setting of being stranded with a killer. Fun books, but feeling a little redundant. Still a fan… still recommend. Just something I noticed!

Why did I bother to read this?

I didn't like this book. Most of the story was about a sadistic man who got his jollies by trapping people with nowhere to run. Then he would shoot and eventually killing them at his leisure. I thought the book was boring but I did finish it to see how the main characters turned out. The fact that the story ended was it's one redeeming quality.

A married couple are driving across the country after their apartment blows up due to an unregulated meth lab. They take a detour in New Mexico, only to find themselves in the crosshairs of a deranged sniper. But this salesman and part-time photographer aren't going to die without a fight.

On the edge of the freaking seat the entire book. Honestly? This is probably even better than No Exit. Taking place within less than a day, I was biting my nails hoping to god no one else dies. I was shocked, horrified, pissed off to no end. I do wish a certain "person's" death was a lot more excruciating, but you can't have everything.

Also, I love good marriages, and James and Elle's was so sweet and innocent and the way they absolutely trusted each other made the story that much better.

Buy the book or borrow it from Amazon KU.

I only picked up this book because of Taylor Adams book No Exit, which was phenomenal and most definitely my most favorite read of 2019. But Eyeshot... no, not my kind of book. I would recommend this to my dad, but not for me. It has some interesting moments, but overall I didnt like this. Here is the entire book.... A couples car breaks down in the desert and a sniper is shooting at them. The end.

"No Exit" des Autoren hat mich absolut begeistert, "No Mercy" hingegen leider weniger.

Taylor Adams is a fine writer of thriller novellas. The problem is that he stretches his ingeniously simple premises and isolated settings to novel length, a reading experience roughly equivalent to being a torture victim slowly stretched out on a rack. Somewhere just past the halfway point, you become aware of the fact that every action sequence has somebody doing something and also reflecting on that something every millisecond of every second of every minute, and you find yourself starting to skim the pages to get to the payoff, and then you start outright flipping through pages so you can find out what happened to who and how because that's all you care about at this point and you just want to get on with your life. Sort of like the final third of any given Jack Reacher novel.

This is true of Adams' other novels, NO EXIT and HAIRPIN BRIDGE, and it's just as true of EYESHOT, where the stretch is baked into the concept: "A Gripping Edge-of-Your-Seat-Suspense Thriller," it says on the cover. Count the redundancies, and take measure of the tendency to use four times as much necessary space to describe a thought or an action, and you'll have an idea of what lies in wait for you as a reader.

But let's give Adams his due here. He is a master of tone and pacing, and every passage and page is meant to engage most or all of a reader's five sense, and there are enough halting breaths and bloodbeats and bullets and disbelieving blinks to keep readers on the hook for a long while. Especially given the ingenious ness of the premise: somewhere in the desert Southwest, two men have figured out a way to isolate and waylay unsuspecting travelers into death traps for the amusement and ego of a sociopath who fancies himself to be a world-class sniper. This time, five strangers are lured into a fake detour, and take shaky cover as the shooting begins. What follows is a long day and night in which the overconfident killers overplay their pat hand.

Great stuff. But I think Adams wears out his readers by piling twist upon twist upon twist upon twist until the reader cries uncle. At a certain point, the reader wants something approaching resolution, not another detour into the pat psychology of the cast members, or an overlong stalking sequence, or yet another improbable twist in which a victim escapes certain death by the fingernails of their fingernails.

It's just all a bit too much made out of too little. Really, this could just s easily have been a solid 10,000-word short story as a first-rate 40,000-word novella. At twice that length, the padding begins to show, and the last several chapters read as though they were written by a college student pulling an all-nighter on a term paper due the next morning, with Adams' strengths with figurative language turning purple. My favorite examples, from throughout EYESHOT:

— "That was Tapp’s first kill in a nutshell, back in the dewy Oregon field where he’d watched a nineteen-year-old hitchhiker in a brown Nirvana shirt choke to death on his own ribs. His breathing had sounded like fluorescent light rods crackling."

— "White-hot emotions and half-thoughts fluttered through his mind like trapped birds but he wasn’t articulate enough to make them real, so he tried them out inside the safe echo chamber of his own mind."

— "The subgun screamed a shrill rattle, like a soda can filled with pocket change and violently shaken."

— "His hyperactive mind – what an unbecoming trait for a marksman, to be cursed with a brain like a bag of cats – leapt now to his homemade camouflage suit."

— "She hated running. She hated jumping. She hated running and jumping. She hated track and field the way she hated Republicans, slobbering dogs, cilantro, and documentaries."

— "As the last neon bits of Roy Burke speckled the ground around her, she rocked on her heels, wiped little clam chowder chunks of viscera from her eyes, and turned slowly to face his night vision scope."

— "Behind him he heard the Soviet’s boots squealing, the man falling on the fuel-slick floor, his shotgun clattering on cement like kitchen pans."

— "Right now, those hungry crosshairs were finding him, intercepting him like white blood cells zeroing in on a virus."

— "Not the hollow knuckle-cracking pop of distant gunfire – no, this was booming, deep, close. It was as powerful and unsympathetic as a car accident."

My takeaway: EYESHOT, like his other thrillers, shows that Taylor Adams is a thriller writer of uncommon talent and skill. But he's not fully in control of his talents, and until he gets a handle on them — hopefully, with the right agent and editor — he'll never vault into the front rank of thriller authors. Either he needs to scale down his small-scope stories, or ramp up the cast and the stakes for the world beyond the isolated locales of his stories. The page counts and the premises are just not in satisfying alignment.

Knyga įtraukė nuo pirmųjų puslapių, nes jau pradžioje keliose vietose man šiurpuliukai rankas perbėgo, tačiau gal ties viduriu man pasidarė kiek nuobodoka ir ištęsta. Norite veiksmo filmo knygos formatu? Griebkite “Taikiklyje” ir atsidūrę Mohavių dykumoje bandykit išgyventi ir išvengti kulkų! Rekomenduoju šį trilerį, jeigu dar neskaitėte, o aš norėčiau daugiau tokių įtemptų trilerių perskaityti! P.S. jei ateityje teks kelionės metu kirsti dykumą, nujaučiu, kad jausiuos ne itin jaukiai..

Nuo pat pirmųjų šios knygos anotacijos sakinių supratau, jog knyga bus kupina įtampos bei nenuspėjamų įvykių. O aš tokias knygas tikrai mėgstu. Tad nei kiek neabejojau, jog šią tiesiog "suvalgysiu". Taip ir nutiko..
Žinau, jog yra išleista šio autoriaus dar viena knyga "Be išeities".

Kaip man patinka tokios knygos! Skaitant šią knygą man atrodė, lyg žiūrėčiau gerą veiksmo filmą. Bent man siužetas pasirodė įtraukiantis bei nenuvalkiotas. Visos detalės pasirodė apgalvotos, bei tinkamai pritaikytos.
Aš negalėjau šios knygos padėti į šoną, kol nesužinojau knygos pabaigos! Tikrai įtraukiantis trileris ir tokio žanro gerbėjams, manau, jog patiks!

**4 Stars**. A very solid & intense thriller!

This has to be the first time I am reading a thriller set in a desert and I loved the setting of this book. A deadly sniper is targeting this young couple - James and Elle Eversman, in the open grounds of Mojave desert. They are completely out in the open with nowhere to go, with only their broken-down car as a protection. Are they going to survive the bullet of this killer? For how long? Will they get the chance to start a new life in Tulsa? - With very slim chances and so many chapters left, I also wondered the same thing!

There were so many odds against them and so much to lose, and all this made to a very tense and thrilling ride for readers. I loved the couple and their relationship; it was hard not to. Author spent so much time on their backstories, it was hard not to get attached with them. We also got the chapters from the killer’s perspective so the action was not all one sided.

The only reason I did not give it five stars was because there were some moments where I felt the book was a little slow, as we spent a big amount of time on exploring the backstories of our characters. The scenes also felt unrealistic in few places. It was not a big issue for me, but it takes you out of the action a bit.

I loved Taylor Adams writing, which I also liked in ‘No Exit’, so it was not a surprise. He writes such gripping action thriller scenes, worthy of being on a movie. It steals your attention and expand your imaginary senses! Definitely planning on reading my last unread book ‘Our Last Night’ by him soon!

Trileriai – dalykas, kuriems aš nepasotinama. Jei manęs laukia krūva neskaitytų knygų, o gaunu naują trilerį – visa kita palauks. Jau eilę metų juos skaitau ir man niekaip nenusibosta. O knyga „Taikiklyje“, vien iš anotacijos, man pasirodė beprotiškai įtemptas reikalas.

Eyeshot really surprised me in more ways than I expected. The writing was edgy there was a crescendo suspenseful thriller that started in the beginning of the book and didn't let up until the very end! For those looking for a quick read and an entertaining thriller I highly recommend this book. Full RTC.

The Most Dangerous Game. Hunter vs. prey. Sniper vs. targets. A deadly game of seconds. With a shooter whose bullets are much bigger than his Cheetos. Not the flawless killing machine you might expect. On the contrary. Unusual character. Good choice. You will not find elaborate storytelling in his part of the desert. Aside some background information of him and the two main protagonists, it's all about the game, about survival. Fast-paced, lots of bloody action, loaded with sarcasm and quite tense at times. I was not bored.

I'd give it 0 stars if possible. I was skimming though whole pages of unnecessary and boring paragraphs. Needless to say, there wasn't any thrill or suspension at all.
