Simon Fisk #3

Gone Cold

Rate this book
Twelve years after a kidnapping destroyed former US Marshal Simon Fisk's family, he is newly determined to find the people responsible for taking his then-six-year-old daughter. Returning home from a case, Simon transforms his apartment into a war room and refuses to step away from the cold case, even after enduring months of dead ends and frustration.

And then, at last, he gets a break in the case. On a brutal January night, Simon finds an urgent message on his computer. Attached are two images: one, a computer-generated image of Hailey Fisk had she reached eighteen years of age; the second, a sketch of a young woman wanted for murder in Ireland. The two images aren’t identical, but there are striking similarities. Within a matter of hours, Simon is on a flight to Dublin, setting off to find a girl who may be Hailey Fisk—before she’s arrested for murder.

These are one of the books where I don't want to rate it this low, but this is just my opinion. Many of you should give this a try.

This book was incredibly boring for me. It wasn't detailed enough, and it was too straightforward. Nothing actually happens until like 80% of the book where things actually get somewhere. I had to push through because of the reviews on GoodReads and for the sake of marking it as read on GoodReads. The book didn't have much of a plot, and it was pretty stereotypical, and at around 50% I had already guessed who it was. The ending was pretty great though. Just now my style :) Give it a try

The best Simon Fisk to date. A heart wrenching look at a father who never gave up trying to find his kidnapped daughter. Twelve years of looking and helping others find kidnapped children (most of whom were taken by aquaintances) should have prepared Simon for what he ended up discovering. But, he was definitely not prepared to face the truth that he uncovered.

Not much personality in this character, a former US Marshal focused on finding kidnapped children. The story moves from scene to scene but no one seems to know much about what is going on. The happy ending was not satisfying. I'm not eager to continue this series.

I have enjoyed all of Corleone's books. I am sad to see he is not writing on his own anymore, or continuing the stories he has written. Simon Fisk is a lone wolf character with as much swagger as any other character out there today. I hope to see his return one day.

A good ending to the horror and misadventures that Simon Fisk endured over the course of the three books.

This was my first experience with Corleone...it was good enough that I will seek out others he has written. Interesting, generational plot-twists.

Okay, this is downright funny.

I just finished reading 'Gone Cold' by Douglas Corleone. I sign onto Goodreads to rate/review the book. And I find out I had started the book over 2 years ago but could not finish it, giving up after 65 pages. I rated it one star.

I read it now, did finish it and was unaware I had tried 2 years ago. I've never done THAT before.

So, here's a review--since I did finish it this time. :)

The positives I took away from this novel was the fact it was quick read. I finished it in two days. I also thought the premise of the book was something new and interesting, not the same old rehashed storyline.

The negatives:

Pretty much the entire novel took place in Ireland and England. I found, several times, the dialogue a bit hard to follow. For example, this is taken directly from page 90:

“I’m telling you,” the Chairman said with a straight face, “Kinny was at the Old Soak, jaked on lager. At chucking-out time, he solicits a gobble from some weegie hoor. Only afterwards, he cannae find his wallet. So he takes out a chib-and snip-takes his knob in lieu of payment.”

HUH??????

I muddled through many scenes like that and, in my opinion, it slowed things down

I generally like the author's style. Generally. One thing that bothered me a bit was the fact that the protagonist frequently thinks back--but at inopportune times which again slows down the action. For example, when he's getting chased and the bad guys are shooting at him and he's running for his life, the author, for some reason, has Mr. Fisk recall a memory from a similar scene 2 years earlier in Minsk. This 'memory' goes on for a page or 2. Not sure why he feels necessary to slow down CURRENT action with something irrelevant and unimportant, that took place 2 years ago.

Another complaint, in my opinion, were they were simply too many characters. They come, the play a part in the novel, then promptly disappear. Several times we get backstories about things like the Irish mafia when it has nothing to do with THIS story.

Lastly, the ending.
I had planned to rate this 3 stars, possibly 4. The ending, however, leaves me rating it a 2.

***spoiler***

The protagonist spends 12 years looking for his daughter. 12 years!!! Finding her has become his passion, his focus, his reason for getting up every morning.

Then, he finds her. A talented author would write a scene like that which would result in emotion for the reader. Tears of happiness. The guy's searched for 12 years and now has found her. However, this scene, which should have been powerful and moving, stirred up no emotion.

The ending, I found, ruined this novel. He finds her after 12 years. She is 18 years old, suffering Stockholm Syndrome. She's a heroin addict. She refers to her captor as "Daddy." It's clear that both father and daughter have a LONG road ahead of them.
Yet, for some reason, at the very end, the protagonist hears of a woman whose daughter was kidnapped and now, after finally finding his daughter after 12 years, thinks nothing of taking on a new case and shoving his daughter aside. To me, this ruined a decent novel.

****End spoiler****

Last time I read this book, I gave up after 65 pages. This time, I was able to finish it. Will I read another novel by this author? Yes, probably. But not anytime soon.

Final to this Trilogy; Start to a whole new adventure

To those who enjoy the Fisk novels, this will not leave you disappointed. It is a part 3 and a prequel all rolled effortlessly into a cohesive and tremendously psychological thriller. Never have I encountered a robust first person novel that allows the character to self reflect so deeply and yet not feel manipulated or whiney (as is the case in certain Jason Bourne novels). Yes, at times you want to skip the inner wrestling for the action, and it has plenty, but I encourage you to intake the book as the author has intended.

The ending plot twists and the returning of beloved characters and the introduction of new ones will leave the reader highly satisfied. Further, Corleone has took the gangster and drug infested area of Europe and not simply demonized them to make the hero shine brighter but to show the hero's own inner struggle. The writer captures the good of family, friendship, and neighborly attitudes that hold strong bonds, even in the darkest places on earth.

To all who know that heroes often walk away damaged, confused, and broken, this novel is for you. The riding off into the sunset is for Disney, this novel end happily, but starkly different than one would think. Thank you Douglas Corleone for being so bold and refreshing!

When I figured the following novels could ever top the amazingly written first novel, I'm not to proud to admit I was wrong. Wait?!? Why read my thoughts and waist so much time...buy the book!

I have been reading Douglas Corleone since his first published book. I feel that with each book his writing only gets better. If you haven't read his books he began with the Kevin Corvelli series and delivered 3 great books based on his experience as an attorney. Then he ventured off to his Simon Fisk series where Fisk's objective is to find children kidnapped by estranged parents. Good As Gone & Payoff are fast paced & quick reads while Fisk finds missing children, however being a victim himself to a kidnapping of his own daughter, Gone Cold is all about finding his daughter Hailey. This was my favorite book in the Fisk series. Perhaps because any child that has been taken from their family, you would like to see them reunited with their parent(s). Excellent book!
Corleone also wrote for Robert Ludlam's Paul Janson series. He contributed very well with the Janson Equation and I'm hoping he will have the opportunity to write more for them.

Gone cold douglas corleone

A very fast paced mystery, full of suspense, betrayal and heartbreak. Simon disks daughter was kidnapped from his home twelve years ago. He now discovers the motive...and it is the oldest of all, revenge. The author has once again written a mystery thriller that is a fantastic read! This is a stand alone novel, but I would recommend you read the Simon fisk series in order. They are all exceptionally well written and tremendous reads!

Overall this is a very good book. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because this is the first book I have read in a UK style of writing. There were some new slang words for me that I had to look up meanings to and so on. It won't be my last book to read in this style, so I'm sure I will get used to it.

This is the third book in a series but the first I have read. I loved the author's legal thrillers set in Hawaii. This was also very good. Interesting to learn more about Scotland, UK gangsters, and slang. A good plot that was easy to follow and kept me reading all day. Now I'll go back and read the previous two books.

Very Good; Continuing character: Simon Fisk; with a chance that his daughter, kidnapped at the age of 6 twelve years prior, might be alive Fisk will stop at nothing to find her and the truth behind her disappearance
