The Ultimate Crochet Stitch Bible is both a stitch guide and a how-to crochet primer, all in one volume. You get all the information needed to get started, including how to choose yarn and needles, read patterns, work basic stitches, how to check gauge, increase and decrease, join pieces and finish projects and and care for your crochet items.
The comprehensive pattern library includes 650 crochet stitches, including basic stitches using single and double crochet, trebles, and some new techniques to get the fabric you want for that special sweater or hat. Lace and openwork stitches are a starting point for exploring the airy shawls, and afghans crochet is famous for. Use one of the many motifs to create an heirloom blanket, or mix and match motifs to create a truly unique piece. There are also edgings and trims you can use on your crochet and other projects, including sewn items and knitted ones.
Each is fully explained with instructions and accompanied by a full-color photo of a sample crocheted swatch. All swatches are worked in updated yarns, beautifully photographed and accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions.
Based on The Harmony Guides, which have been a longstanding and valued reference for handcrafters for more than thirty years, with over half a million worldwide sales, this edition is updated with eye-catching photography and innovative new stitches, but also never forgetting the heritage of the guides.
First Reads Goodreads winner. This is a beautiful highly-organized hardcover book. The book is divided basically into 4 sections, 3 are directions for the different stitches with a close-up photo of a swatch for each stitch. The first section of stitches focuses on basic crochet stitches, 2nd covers motifs in lots of shapes, and the 3rd is for edgings and trims. The section I appreciated most as a beginning crocheter is the beginning of the book called "starting off". It truly starts with the first step which is securing the yarn on the hook, and explains the most basic of stitches and also clarifies the things that crochet patterns assume you know. It goes on to make clear important terms and abbreviations one should be familiar with when working from a pattern . Also has a detailed explanation of stitch diagrams. And to top it off there are handy tips that are scattered throughout the book. I don't want to deceive anyone into thinking that this is just a primer for novices like myself, the "starting off" section is just the first 32 pages and the remainder of the 285 pages contain the 500 beautiful crochet stitches for the more proficient.
This is the most useful instructional crochet book I've ever come across. It's very comprehensive, covering anything you could want to know from basic (and not so basic) stitches, to how to read a pattern chart, and even various motifs and edgings. I'd recommend this to any novice and intermediate crocheter, and anyone else wanting to pick up a new craft.
I loved this book - there were so many new and fresh stitches, motifs, and edges that I have never seen before; but, when I would attempt to recreate them, nothing would turn out correct. For example, I tried following the instructions for the basketweave stitch and it did not come out correctly - and I have done the basketweave stitch before. There was something in her instructions that was not right. I tried several of the borders and they did not come out nice either. I would have to go online and try to find the equivalent pattern, which was frustrating. I would be interested in trying another one of these books because this one just was not right for me.
Nice big book with lots of patterns. I already own several Harmony Guides which contain these patterns. But if you're looking for a reference guide, you may want to look at this.
I did really appreciate the wide variety of motifs and border designs offered, but it could be improved with more detail on how to incorporate the designs into a larger project
This is a good reference book for all types of crochet stitches, with some useful tips. The illustrations are clear, and the written directions are good.
When I picked this up I didn’t realize it was a Harmony Guide. I already have several of their books. Although they are quite good, I’m always a little irked to find a great deal of duplication of information and patterns (even the same photographs!) I’ve already purchased from them - sometimes multiple times already. This one seems to take 3 books I already own (books on motifs, borders, and stitches) and combine them into a single volume without adding anything new at all. Sigh.
So. If you don’t already have any of their books, this is a good reference. If you already have some, compare to what you already have and see if it adds enough new to be worth the price for you.
BEAUTIFUL! 500 CROCHET STITCHES THE ULTIMATE CROCHET STITCH BIBLE BY ERIKA KNIGHT is the perfect book for anyone from beginner to expert crocheters. I am a beginner crocheter so this is especially helpful to me. It gives you the how to's of crochet then in the later part of the book it puts it altogether with very beautiful blocks. This book would not only be a great addition to a crafter's library but an excellent gift for any occasion.
I received this book from goodreads in exchange for a review.
Great way to expand the number of pattern stitches that can be applied to your projects. This is exactly what I was looking for to explore and create new designs.
500 Crochet Stitches: The Ultimate Crochet Stitch Bible is beautifully done. Filled with diagrams and full color photos; this lovely book will walk you through hundreds of stitches, motifs, edgings, and trims. No matter your crochet proficiency, you will find a comfortable starting place within the book, and so many ways to take your projects to the next level. This book is a must have for crocheters.
* I received a copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads*
This is an excellent book if you want to learn to crochet more than a chain stitch. It's visually easy to understand and follow, the pictures and diagrams are amazing. Even for someone who had never tried to crochet before would be able to follow and create these designs and oh there are so many! I'm really excited to try new patterns! Great book!
This is a LARGE beautiful book - all the stitches you will ever need/want to crochet - beautifully written and set up. I bought this and will keep it as a reference - a beautiful gift also!
Love the variety of stitches. Think I'll have to buy a copy of this book to keep... Since the library frowns on me keeping their copy indefinitely.....
This is awesome, has basic beginner info, very clear and easy to grasp. Then basic to advanced stitches. Great sketches and photos. Highly recommend this!
