Chasing Midnight

Rate this book
Isabel Stone’s life is far from normal. She’s a girl with problems—vampire problems to be specific and, now, she also has one ticked-off specter on her hands. Approached by a childhood friend and medium, Isabel agrees to look into the murder of a local girl, only to wind up inhabited by the solitary witness—a centuries-old ghost who is all too happy to piggyback along in Isabel’s body, and she’s not leaving until the culprit is behind bars.

With the help of her partner, Shane, and her crazy family, Isabel struggles to get to the truth, unmask a killer, and deal with her growing feelings for not one, but two, of the sexy, undead men vying for her heart. Just when things are finally falling into place, a huge revelation takes her out of the frying pan… and straight into the fire.

This is definitely worth a read, I enjoyed it. There wasn't anything in there that hasn't really been done before, but nonethless I liked it and am hanging out for book three to be released 2016. Don't worry, no real cliffhanger.

I really like this series but it just stopped, with a cliffhanger. That is why I took a star away. I love the author writing style, but two books, which were great, then nothing ? The characters do not deserve that, nor the readers.A love triangle, and a big bad on the way to take out our fierce heroine, plus you added a character, then just nothing since then. You have written other books, so I am at a loss. I love the sense of humor, all the action, her sisters, and the three main characters. please write one more, and finish this.

A solid 3 stars. Negatives first: This series always seems very rushed. Positives: Every small character, however insignificant, always ends up adding to the story. The addition of the guardian was particularly intriguing!

Love this author!

Another great book in this series. This book was even better then the first one. I love the heroine and the other characters as well. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Well, I said in my review for CHASING DAYBREAK that it would get even better in book 2, and I promise you I did not lie! I believe I actually loved CHASING MIDNIGHT even more! It was such a blast reading this book. This sequel is a bit longer than the first and we get more into the meat of the characters and their lives, since we've already been introdced to them. There was a bit more gore and action in this one (but trust me, it's NOT over the top or anything that would make you stop reading), with a great new case for Isabel and Shane (though she tries to do most of it on her own and, well, you'll see how that goes!). Isabel has a "secret admirer" of sorts, who leaves her gruesome presents at her door. And we meet a new character in Sue, who has a truly unique relationship with Isabel. I loved their push and pull and how Sue forced Isabel out of her comfort zone.

I must acknowledge The Big Event thst happened....can I just say Oh My Gosh and FINALLY and YES!!! I was SO HAPPY when that happened!! Aaaaaand then.... my heart BROKE for Isabel (and for Shane) and I was like "no, no, NO!!" and "what the F#%/ is going on?!?!" GAH!! Why do authors love to see us cry?? Anyway, I was at least relieved to find out that the reason behind the heartbreak was exactly what I thought it was, but I'm scared that he's gonna lose Isabel and something REALLY BAD is going to happen with the whole Richard-experimenting thing...I'm concerned this will not end well!

Needless to say, after devouring the first two books, I'm on pins and freaking needles waiting for book 3! Is it 2016 yet?! Well, at least I'll have the pleasure of re-reading these first two books when the release is impending :-) Trust me, if you like urban fantasy of any sort, vampires, strong women, swoon-worthy vamp men, or any and all of the above, you'll love this series! Check it out!

Thanks to CTP for the e-copy of this book for purposes of an honest review.

The second book in a series can really be pivotal. Sometimes we start off thinking we love a series only to be turned off by the second book. In the case of "Chasing Midnight," I find myself wondering if I like where this series appears to be heading. Why? The best answer to this question is that I've never cared for love triangles especially in adult literature. Although I reluctantly read it at times in YA books, I truly feel adults should not be that fickled. Hey, don't get me wrong, there will always be men who raise our blood pressure and peak our interest but it's like art; just because you like a painting it doesn't mean it would look good in your home!

This time Isabel goes out on a date with Vampire honcho, Xavier. He sees something in Isabel he likes and Iowa not about to walk away from getting next to her. Meanwhile, someone from her past asks for her help and when she participates in a seance, she suddenly has two people trying to occupy one body. This will lead to issues with Isabel's ex, Shane and the beginning of problems with the plot for me. A part of the problem is that in book one we really didn't get a chance to really know Shane or Xavier so I find both of them difficult to rally behind. Now, we are getting a glimpse the real Xavier and neither he or Shane are winning any leading man points with me. Besides, a relationship with either one of these yahoos is pretty predictable.

There is plenty of action and intrigue in book two. Also, I like the character of Isabel and wish the author would give us more world building in the family dynamics department and potential boyfriend background department. Hopefully, that will be coming soon. Here is one of those series that I am now on the edge with to see if I will continue with it long term. I will definitely be reading book three but will hold off my judgment on the rest of the series until then.

A complimentary copy of the book was provided for an honest review.

After reading the first book, Chasing Daybreak, and its introduction of Isabel, Shane, and Xavier, along with many other characters that I grew to like in the Dark of Night series debut, I knew I wanted to read the second one because of how much I found myself drawn into the story. Like the first book, this second book continues the combination of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Ranae didn't disappoint, and I liked this book just as much if not a little more than the first one. This goes a little more in depth as far as Shane and Isabel's past, and I liked that it's told from dual perspectives. There's still a lot of tension between the two, and I really want to read the third book in this series to find out what's going to happen next. I'm just sad I'm going to have to wait until next year. Of course, Isabel has a mystery to solve, and I found that part of the story to be incredible with what happened and the introduction of ghosts.

Over the course of Chasing Midnight, there are many times I wanted to slap Xavier. I remember saying he sort of won me over in the first book, but in this one, my viewpoint shifted. There were so many things he said and did that left me with a less than favorable impression of him, and he came across as something of a jerk. So, if there's a relationship triangle, I'm firmly in Shane's corner.

Loved this book, and easily 5/5 platypires.

Chasing Midnight is the second book in this new Dark Of Night series and I think this would be my "must read series" recommendation of the year so far!

I have devoured the first 2 books and I sit anxiously waiting for the third one to get penned. This second installment introduces a wider range of paranormal but without taking away from the brilliance that was sparked in the first one. Not an easy thing to do!

Sequels can be a tricky business and I will admit I was a little concerned after such an impressive first outing but this is managed brilliantly and all my fears were for nothing.

An easy 5 out of 5 stars from me! V""V

This series is much more than your typical murder mystery. You've got a take-no-prisoners PI that doesn't take no for an answer in Isabel and an assortment of supernaturals looking for her help. It's up to Isabel and her partner (and ex-fiance) Shane to determine which are friends and which are foe.
This one focuses less on Isabel and Shane's relationship and more on Isabel's own internal conflict when she's possessed by a centuries old ghost who makes her see things from a new perspective. I loved the crime drama aspect that is tied into this paranormal romance. But I would have liked to see more interaction between Isabel and Shane. There was a lack of chemistry in this second installment. There were POV's from both Isabel and Shane, and the writing felt rushed at times.
Be warned: Books 3 and 4 aren't coming any time soon and this one left several unanswered questions. (more review below)

With this being the second book in the series, and the first being one of the best novels I'd read in a long time, I really had high hopes. However, I can't get over bad writing decisions. I am completely for multiple perspectives from characters. I've read whole series that were written that way. What I can't forgive, however, is the change in writing type. To jump from first person perspective, to third person, is jaulting, and quite honestly, horrendous on all accounts. It wasn't a justified decision, and should have been picked up by the editing team also. I was set to read this series, but I won't be back for the third. Incredibly disappointing.

Cliffhanger

Annoyingly this was a cliffhanger with no further date for release of the third book in the series. Notwithstanding that this was a great story, fast paced with murder, mayhem, vampires and werewolves it had a private investigator, a paranormal one, living with her ex fiance who is a new vampire in her attic and gets possessed. I loved it please get book three out soonest

One word: Awesome!

You can't help but to love the characters and the story line. I cannot wait until the next book in this series is out. I normally do not write reviews but for this series I will at least write enough of one to let readers know that this is an awesome book from the beginning to the end. A must read.

My Thoughts:

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you all my thoughts on Chasing Daybreak, the first novel in this series. I said in my review that while I enjoyed the novel immensely, there were numerous things I would have liked to have seen done differently. I had, in my mind, a few things that I wanted to see out of the next installment in this series, but didn't really know what to think. I never expected to fall in love with this series as much as I did through this second installment.

If I was concerned about the future of this series, I can definitely say with 100% certainty that I am not anymore! Chasing Midnight was everything I was looking for and so much more!

Chasing Midnight takes the reader on a second journey into the life is Isabel Stone's crazy, thrilling life as a PI. With her former, now-vampire, lover as her second in command, Isabel must crack her toughest case yet!

The paranormal aspect of this novel was spot-on. In addition to the 'out of the coffin' vampires and werewolves we saw in book one, this book introduces us to psychics, a bit of magic, and ghosts. The afterlife and possession are huge factors that tie into the plot of Chasing Midnight and I don't think I've ever seen an author execute them as well as Glass! Oftentimes ghosts are the joke of the supernatural community, they are seldom taken seriously. It seems that ghosts are among the hardest entities to write because they are just... well... a little boring. Glass took that into consideration and wrote an awesome spin on the trope. By humanizing our ghostly characters, Glass was able to weave a fulfilling storyline that should leave all paranormal fans proud!

The character development in CM was probably my favorite part. Anyone who read my review of book one will remember that Shane was my favorite character. I was so excited to see that he had a much larger role in book two. We learn a whole lot about his backstory and really get into his mind on multiple occasions as this novel is told in dual POV from his perspective as well. I really enjoyed that! When it came to Isabel, I was really impressed with how Glass enhanced her character. While I took issues with Isabel's character in book one, all of my negative thoughts were erased after reading this one! Glass really knocked it out of the park. Move over Sookie Stackhouse, you've got company, Isabel Stone is here to stay!

The plot of this novel is non-stopped awesome that really left me hooked until the very last page! While this novel doesn't have as much of a mystery, the reader is constantly left with 'how will our characters solve this new dilemma' feelings, which are great! I'm not huge on the suspense so it was fun to know the endgame, but not how it would happen, that was a fun twist on the genre for me. This novel also really does a great job of setting up the story for the second half of the series. Glass has confirmed at least four novels in this series, here's to hoping for a few more after that! Am I right?

When it comes to the setting, Glass really went above and beyond for this one. South Carolina makes for the best book settings. Look at the Beautiful Creatures series, right!? Amazing. So much darkness and mystery, and the southern vibes are incredible. I couldn't be more thrilled with that setting if I tried! I cannot wait to see how Glass expands on that in the future.

The last thing I want to touch on is how emotional this novel was. I was really blown away by Glass' ability to write such an emotionally gripping story in terms of romance, heartbreak, family ties, and friendship while still adhering to a strictly paranormal novel-esque feel. It was incredible. Huge praises to Glass for that.

For all you paranormal readers looking for the next big thing, don't miss this series, you won't regret it! Go ahead and clear off that spot on your bookshelf, you're going to want this series for yourself!

As you can see, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this second installment in the Dark of Night series. It should come as no surprise that I am granting Chasing Midnight a well-deserved 5-star review! I wouldn't have changed a thing! Ranae Glass has quickly become one of my top names in the NA Paranormal genre and I cannot wait to see what she has up her sleeve next!

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***

I didn't think it was possible for Isabel to be any more badass. I was wrong. I'll admit that the whole ghost haunting intrigued me and I really enjoyed reading that particular section of the book. There's some drama there, and you'll want to read it!

My views on Shane have changed due to this book, and I no longer think of him as a pathetic loser. I'm officially #TeamShane now, and I still picture Xavier as a creepy, wrinkly old man despite the author's description of him. I have no idea why, but that is the way I picture him and that image will remain burned in my mind for the rest of this series.

Xavier is the character I LOVE to HATE. From the beginning I suspected there was stuff he was hiding and turns out I wasn't wrong. I can't say anymore than that, but my hate for him has been cemented with this second book.

A lot of stuff happens with Isabel and Shane in this book and we see Isabel still holds some feeling for Shane, although she tries to deny it to herself. I don't know what will happen in the future between them, but I will be rooting for them! I can't wait for the next installment! Too bad I have to wait a whole year...

The writing flowed well and was so engaging I stayed up an entire night to finish the book. This is a series I definitely recommend to anyone who likes a butt-kicking heroine.

Chasing Midnight gets 5/5 Platypires!

No You Did Not End It That Way

No no no...Ms. Glass I am really unhappy with you right now. You know why? Oh let me tell you. I just finished Chasing Midnight and now I HAVE to wait...wait I tell you until next year to read the next one. Okay quick rant over.
On to the novel...I Loved It! Wow what chemistry, suspense, action, and adventure. Isabelle is one crazy ornery woman but so amazing, such a big heart, so caring, and let's not forget strong. I find her personality and attitude to be hilarious at times then full of awe other times. She never seems to get a break and is so torn all the time with her internal struggles. Let's not forget the hotties Shane and Xavier. Now you throw in the surprise there at the end and wham...the story gets even better. Theirs really no way to express the wondrous world Ms. Glass created except to read it for yourself. Next year is so far away...yes I'm complaining about having to wait again.

Ever finish a book and think to yourself... gawd damn.

The relationship between Isabel and Shane already tugged on my heartstrings a ton during Chasing Daybreak, book 1, but this book... I had moist eyes more than once. The conflict with their relationship is done in such a way that my heart ached as I learned more of their story.

I'm going to say this now, so you know where I stand on this issue. Xander better back the fluff off, or I will cut a bish. #TeamShane

Unlike the first story, a good deal of this one isn't concluded with the end of the book. This has more of an introduction into more shenanigans that poor Isabel just got herself caught up in... and I have one thing to say about that:

Is it 2016 yet? Because I am quite ready for the next book in this series to exist in my life.

Anyway, great series. Can't wait for book 3!

I was floored by book one, book two has not disappointed!
We get to go deeper into the Paranormal PI world with Isabel Stone and her ex-fiancé/newly turned vampire partner Shane. That twist alone could be fantastic book! We are also getting to see Isabel's plus one. Read the book and you will see!
They are trying to help an old friend solve a murder and they really get more than they bargained for! Renae Glass will have you reading as fast as you can and hating yourself for finishing this book so quickly only to make you wait for the next one! The ending!!!! Just be prepared, WOW!
I can't wait to see what happens in book three!!!

Chasing Midnight is the exciting successor to Chasing Daybreak. I was eagerly awaiting this story and was not disappointed in the least. Isabel‘s life is still complicated and messy, yet she remains one of my favorite characters in a long while. Her relationship with Shane continues to be strained, especially as she is sneaking peeks at another hunk that may or may not be just what the doctor ordered. I love the way in which the author, Renae Glass, shuffles humor, heartache, and mystery in just the right way to create lively relationships along with an unusually imaginative story. Enjoyed the ride tremendously and will certainly be on the watch for the next book.

This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.

Another Excellent Read

Isabel is looking for a missing pregnant girl, who she knows was murdered, while her life takes on many twists and turns. Some, are good and others are taking her closer to the funny farm. Shane and her relationship becomes more difficult due to unforeseen circumstances. Her other admirers are causing waves. She's stuck literally in the middle of the chaos that her life has become but unaware of mechanisms behind her back. Trust is a beautiful thing but what will happen once they come out?

I'm having a hard time find words! Chasing Midnight was as good, if not better, than the first book.

Isabel and Shane's relationship kills me, because they both want whats best for each other, even if they're both miserable and you want to smack them both upside the head for being stupid.

The ending was perfect, even if I am now anxiously awaiting for the next book, which won't be out until next year! The torture may kill me.

I loved the sassy voice of the main character, Isabel. She had me laughing so many times. This woman is tough as nails, but has a soft and tender side too—as we get to see very clearly when she is possessed by a ghost and forced to confront her lingering feelings for Shane, ex-fiancé turned vampire. Swearing, typical vampire violence and also some of the more human kind. The romance moves into PG-13 areas, but it’s behind closed doors. The relationship is implied, not explicit.
