Librarian's Note: This is an alternate/new cover for ASIN B00HVHX11K

Book One of a three book trilogy.

Nick O'Hara is a veritable womanizer. The only qualifications that he looks for in a romantic connection is that the person is hot and breathing. Mainly hot. He has no desire for an emotional connection with another person, and that's the way he lives his life. He has his fabulous wealth and his reputation as a premiere architect, and that's enough for him.

Until Scotty James.

Scotty is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City. She's broken from traumatic experiences from her years in foster care and homelessness. She has a vulnerability that is intoxicating to Nick, because, deep down, he knows that he is as broken as she.

When Nick pursues Scotty, it seems that she is the only woman who doesn't want to be with him. At first she's a challenge, but Nick soon finds himself falling in love for the first time in his life. With a woman who wants nothing to do with him.

Can Scotty overcome her trust issues and fear to let Nick in? Or will she prove to be too broken to trust?

This is a full-length, 95,000 word, New Adult novel with mature themes.

Oh, boy, this wasn't great.

Great narration, (the audiobook.)

But the lackluster story was tedious to finish.

It was filled with cliches and uninteresting characters. The author relied on rape too much as a plot device and to give the heroine a personality, and it did nothing for the story or the character.

Very weak main characters and a shady way of dealing with a sensitive subject such as rape. I was uncomfortable. It did not help the fact the hero decided halfway through the book that he didn't believe that the heroine was raped, because she went on a date... Ew.

*Disclaimer: this review is just my honest opinion about the book. We at The Diary of Book Enthusiasts are firm believers that readers are entitled to their own opinions and we acknowledge the fact that not everyone agrees with our own. It’s always best not to let other’s opinion cloud yours.

I really wanted to like this book, but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t. It’s a wonder how I even finished it.

I liked its premise, but that’s just about it. I couldn’t connect with the characters, I didn’t like the writing style, the POV of the H and h are alike (i.e. they have the same ‘voice’), there were inconsistency in the subplot, I didn’t feel the H and h’s chemistry, they encounter the same people everyday (in a bad way, because it didn’t help with the plot), the story was slow paced, the story and characters felt unreal, and the plot is undeveloped. Not to mention that the cover didn't make any sense because the book is mostly about Scotty, not Nick (in fact, we don't get much subplot about Nick here).

Scotty was too weak for me. She was selfish. She didn’t have confidence in herself, which was very annoying and ugh. She didn’t have a backbone, which I really dislike in my heroines. She was too soft and easily intimidated. Her personality was conflicting at times, too. She wanted to not be like her mother, to make something of her life, but she wasn’t driven enough. She’s one of the inconsistencies in the whole book. I didn’t see a redeeming quality in her character. I couldn’t help but wonder why Nick was so obsessed with her. It was as if he was seeing something in her that I couldn’t, because the only written thing about Scotty that showed she was anything but an empty character came from Nick’s mouth, which hardly counts as he was interested in her. When a character is said to be this or that, other characters saying that doesn’t convince the reader that she is really those things. The characteristics being said has to be instilled in the character itself. The reader has to see it in their every move. (UGH. I HATE IT WHEN I CAN’T BE CLEAR ABOUT MY POINT BECAUSE I STILL HAVE A LOT OF WORDS TO LEARN IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN BETTER. Sorry, guys).

Nick. I only have a few words to say about this guy: submissive, manwhore (not the swoon-worthy kind ladies fall in love with in books), narrow-minded, sometimes a little too dense , and overall not worth my affection.

THERE’S A SPOILER AHEAD, SO YOU MIGHT NEED TO MAKE A DECISION WHETHER TO READ ON OR GO ON WITH YOUR WAY NOW. You’ve been warned.

The most irritating thing in this whole book is the word “So” is almost always in the start of the sentence. I don’t think putting that word in the beginning of the sentence in what seemed like 90% of the book is grammar wise. It took out the appeal in the writing style, deeming the book . . . undeveloped.

I don’t know how else to describe my experience with this book. I don’t know how I made it from start to finish.

Narrators: Allison Lynnewood and Jeremy York

I really was enjoying this story. I don’t usually care for switch in POVs, but I thought the author did the switch in perfect spots and she gave enough that there was still suspense to the story. However, I am not sure how many guys think “crappity crap” or say “pray tell” to each other. Some of Nick’s verbiage felt more feminine than masculine.

Here is where I had the biggest problem and for my rating.

Allison Lynnewood, the narrator for Scotty, sounded like she was trying to seduce someone. She was not the right choice for the voice of Scotty who is supposed to be an innocent.

Jeremy York did the voice of Nick. Nick is supposed to be 35 years old, but the narrator sounded like a 45 year old man.

I think one of my favorite types of romance is the small town ones. I think it’s because I can relate (somewhat) most to them and living in small town as well. Mallory who is our main character in this, is a lot like myself. When I first started college I was DYING to get out the town I’m in now. (I did, but I don’t want to go into my personal life, but I’m back)

Life in the fast lane in New York, the movers, the shakers, the rich, who know no limits in their quest to be entertained. Meet Nick O’Hara, a sexual “loose cannon,” so to speak, if it is breathing, beautiful and falling at his feet, alone or with a friend, count him in, the more often, the better! A famous and successful architect with the deep pockets to prove it, Nick is a player.

There is another side to New York, those living paycheck to paycheck and even then they are in fear of falling through the gaps between checks. There are millions of stories about the people in New York and Scotty James’ story is a painful one that has colored her life to this very day. A brilliant and gifted architectural student, Scotty was hurt so badly in her youth she avoids men at all costs, no one will make her a victim again.

This is how two worlds collide, the haves and the have-nots in a hurricane of emotions, each fighting against what they feel, each hunkered down in their own safety zones. Nick is a man of action, a man of privilege and he knows how to throw his weight around, except his attempt to claim Scotty keeps falling short and she won’t tell him exactly why. Can Nick break down Scotty’s walls? Can he become the kind of man she needs? Can he learn to be a one woman man? This simple girl is beautiful beyond compare, but about as substantial as a puff of smoke. When one of Nick’s rejected “harem” takes aim with her cruelty and viciousness, how can Scotty stand up for herself against a powerhouse on a broomstick?

Do you like drama, angst by the bucketloads or one non-communication after several miscommunications? How do you feel about men who KNOW they can have whomever, whenever they want without emotional attachments? What about downtrodden women who fail to see their own worth and fail to stand up for themselves at the most crucial moments? I have to hand it to Annie Jacoby and Broken, I was so involved in this tale, I was taking mental turns at who I disliked the most, and yes, I found a winner. But what I noticed was, I was so involved, that these people became frighteningly real to me, while I can’t say I would want any of them for friends, their plight was gut-wrenching, and frustrated the heck out of me! Ms. Jacoby forced me to connect and take a rollercoaster ride into the lives and insecurities of people in their personal lives. Are people ever as they truly seem or do they do what is expected of them by others? Sweet romance potential, lies by omission, lack of faith, it’s all here, but watch your last step at the end…

I received this copy of Broken from Annie Jacoby in exchange for my honest review.

Wonderful read.

Nick O'Hara is a rick entitled male only looking for bed partners. Having one-night stands with no string attached is all he wants. The only requirement is she is pretty and understands the rules of no attachments to him whatsoever. He believes he is only wanted for his reputation and money with his wealth and prestige as a premier architect.
Nick also is a professor at the local college and enjoys working with his students. Juggling a career and being a professor is not an easy task. When Scotty, a female student of exceptional abilities, catches his eye and stirs something inside him, he cannot let her get past him and offers her a job at his firm. But a female worker has other ideas and plots to eliminate her competition by bringing up Scotty's past transgressions.

Scotty is broken from traumatic experiences from her years in foster care and living on the streets. She spent years on the streets fending for herself after a rich foster dad takes advantage of her and tries to pass her around for favors amongst his wealthy friends. Keeping all male suitors at bay is her only recourse to protect herself. Her friend is her roommate that is gay and tries to reason with her to let another male in, or she will end up alone. Taking chances is not in her relationship's future, but the persistence of Nick and her feeling for him may bring her around. Only if she overcome her past, live for today, and hope for a future that she felt was never possible.

Deep down, Scotty knows Nick is what she desires but fights the attraction with everything she has. Nick is too good for her, and she must convince Nick this is true. Nick is relentless in the pursuit of Scotty. Can he show her to give him a chance, or will time, money, and circumstances end them both? They both have demons they must overcome to find their happily ever after.

Broken is the first book in this series, and I immensely enjoyed every page. Looking forward to more from this series and author.

Slow-moving plot which is annoyingly told from the alternating perspectives of the H/h. H is a fabulously wealthy, handsome, talented, intelligent man whore who swings (frequently) both ways. h is his fabulously beautiful, talented, dirt-poor student who has major issues with her past. h also has the obligatory gay best fried, screwed-up mother, and infant sibling. H has the compulsory stable of girlfriends who are appropriately evil and his office is populated by smarmy colleagues who have nasty designs on h. H is also a college professor who meets h when she is one of his graduate students. I guess he's living in a bubble of some sort and hasn't heard that good sense, if not university policy, demands that he NOT have a relationship a student.

The plot is completely predictable and at 36% I fast-forwarded to the end to see if I wanted to finish the book. AAAArgh! Despite being billed a trilogy, which good English usage defines as three books which are connected, but can stand alone, this ends with a cliff-hanger and we have to pay to finish the story. It's not that good, so I will forgo the experience.

Thank goodness this was free on amazon.

This is what I was feeling and doing while reading this...

yep throughout the book I tried not rolling my eyes, but I just couldn't help it.

The characters Scotty and Nick, now lets see I don't know who was more dramatic. The story just felt deflated for me. I didn't connect at all with Scotty, she was written as too weak but with a little backbone and that became annoying. Nick oh boy don't get me started on him, I really didn't get his game at first and he just wasn't all that alpha'ish to me plus him saying that he loved Scotty yet he was willing to have a relationship with another woman. aaaarrrggghhh OMG, I'm going to have to stop here and lets just say that I am going to complete the series whether I like it or not.

Premise was intriguing -- but it fell way short in pulling it all together and the writing errors were simply too many to ignore. I wanted to like both the main characters and, of course, my heart felt sorrow for both, but the whole story just didn't work and everything felt very helter-skelter-ish for me.

It's my first time to read a book by Annie Jocoby, and after reading Broken, I felt that I missed something fierce in my bookworm life! It seems that Nick has already appeared in the other books written by Jocoby because the story mentioned a lot about his past with Ryan and Iris and other ladies.

Yep, it's true, Nick here is a manwh0re, he's got a lot of women on his plate and he devours each and every one of them. He's super rich, he's got a mansion and a car, he's got an architectural firm and he had this attitude that "whatever Nick wants, Nick gets". Especially after he meets Scotty. He even goes to great lengths to impress her by helping out with her drunk mom and abandoned brother while Scotty works at a bar.

Scotty, on the other hand, is Nick's extreme opposite. She's poor, she hardly has time for herself, she shares an apartment with her gay best friend, she works at night and she's studying at the same time. Oh, and she's utterly gorgeous, too, although she doesn't know how to use that beauty to her advantage. Because she had been taken advantage of before and she's definitely afraid now.

Broken is a titillating book, it covers a lot of wickedly sexy scenes (on Nick's part, that is) but it also has a plot that can make you seek for a box of tissues and cry ugly. Nick, despite his status in life, knows how to cry, how to shed tears as he pours out his emotions. And Scotty, poor, poor Scotty, is someone you would definitely want to keep. Jocoby's writing is powerful and brilliant, I have no other words to describe my experience with her book!

4 Stars!

Interesting book. This book's blurb intrigued me so I took a jab at reading it and was pleasantly surprised. With a storyline that flows well and is pretty unique, this is a romance full of feels and twists. This book was crazy emotional at times but also quite sexy.

This is the beginning of Nick and Scotty's story. Scotty is barely making it through life, striving for more than what she has. Nick is her current professor and now boss, as she interns at his company. Scotty and Nick are attracted to each other. Scotty is a broken girl, barely surviving. Nick is a well known bachelor with unique tastes. He wants Scotty. He wants to heal her and show her love. Their story will not be easy and it is going to take a lot of work. Get ready for an emotional ride.

Hmmmm Nick... he is a... complex man, especially at the beginning. He is definitely a manwhore at its finest but Scotty makes him want to change and he sincerely tries. I also like Scotty. She made my heat bleed because she had been through so much. That ending was... killer!

I recommend this book and look forward to book two.

I am giving this book 3 stars because I just couldn't put it down. That being said I had love hate relationship with the hero. He could be really sweet but the bottom line he was a submissive male. I like my men to be alpha and dominate. I have no interesting my hero getting attached with every female he comes in contact with. He had women moving it to his place after one screw. The double standards were unreal. Scotty couldn't be with anyone else but it was okay for Nick to have a woman spend the entire weekend with him at his loft screwing all weekend long. She never left until Monday morning and he goes to work to see Scotty. Scotty the love of his life. He thinks she went to a movie with a guy and cuts her off and treats her like crap. But the woman who he spent every hour with at his loft screwing and wore his clothes...that was all okay! He bawls because of what she did to him?! But as much as Nick is the worst hero possible I still couldnt put it down. But then jerry springer was entertaining. If you like sub heroes you will love this.

I'm all for a good cliffhanger, but this one felt like the story was just cut off. Scotty and Nick were so wishy washy that i had a hard time connecting with either one of them. What Scotty went through as a teen was horrible and for Nick to even entertain the thought that it was a lie is beyond me. Nick says he loves her through most of the book, but the first time he hears office gossip he believes it and doesn't even give Scotty a chance to explain what really happened. While claiming to still love Scotty he just jumps into a relationship with someone else and pretty much dismisses Scotty. I'm glad that they finally git together and Scotty overcame her fears, but the ending was rushed and yes, what Portia did was wrong it kind of reminded me of another series that i have read....

Here is the thing.. I liked the story overall but there were things I really could not ignore and they reduced the number of stars. :(

Certain words and phrases were used over and over. Repetition like that drives me a little nuts. The hero was too perfect, I am pretty sure he could fly along with his perfect job, millions of dollars, sexual ability, musical talent and ability to play anything he hears just once. The heroine and her roommate are so broke they can't afford food but they always seem to have booze aplenty. To the point they drink cocktails every night.

So, if you can suspend belief and ignore the repetition and some unneeded passages then there is a good story laying beyond.

I've heard so many good things about Annie Jacoby from friends so I finally decided to give her a try. I couldn't even get past the first page, though.

Quick example:
"Of course, Aaron would probably be better off in foster care, then with my mother."

That's on page one. I really wanted to give her a try, but I just can't get past that kind of thing. If spelling and grammar don't bother you, go ahead and give it a try, it sound like a great story. If that sort of thing will bug you, though, save yourself the frustration.

Ugh. I want my two hours back.

**Frustrated spoilers ahead!**

Meet Nick. He's a man-whore. I mean, a classic book billionaire - ripped, successful, intelligent, and totally swoon-worthy. And a man-whore.

Meet Scotty. She's had a really tough life, with a plot point hooker of a mother in the first chapter that's never seen again. She has a traumatic past that she can't escape from, no matter how she tries. She's starvation thin with a great rack and a fabulous gay bestie who likes cocktails in the middle of the night.

Nick's had a couple of threesomes while I was typing that, because he's a man-whore with an enormous manhood who totally, completely loves Scotty but randomly gets it on with other people anyway.

(FYI, man-whore and enormous manhood aren't typically phrases I use, but they're in this book often, so get used to them. Or be warned. Possibly both).

There's a lot of repetition in the text. The emotions portrayed feel immature and underdeveloped, as do the conversations. An example:

"She turned around, her books held tightly to her chest. She didn’t meet my eyes. She was dressed in baggy clothes, baggier than usual. Her blue sweater was around three sizes too big, and she was wearing large cargo pants that hung off of her tiny frame, along with scuffed Doc Marten combat boots. Her hair was up, and she was wearing glasses. I don’t think that she had a stitch of makeup on.

She was still the most beautiful woman I had ever seen."

***Bonus super spoiler if you've read this far!***

It's a cliffhanger. I don't want to keep reading, and actually regret the time spent reading at all, because the climactic "We are finally having sex after wanting each other for 90% of the book and we're going to do it like 15 times in a day" scene involved a magic dick (sorry, enormous manhood) that cured her chronic abuse PTSD in like, two strokes. That sort of nonsense makes me rage in run-on sentences.

This book needed a few more rounds of editing. Not that the grammar was bad, aside from the authors penchant to reuse phrases “a lot. A lot a lot.” [what is that??], but the novel was more at the very detailed outline stage than a final version of a book. The concept of the story was okay, but there were inconsistencies with timing and seriously under developed characters. Some moments were rushed While others dragged on - I felt like I would timewarp through the story. The chemistry between our M and F protagonists is forced and hardly believable because it doesn’t develop - it just IS and the reader has to accept it. Eh...Frankly, I want to take a word document of the book and highlight things that need more work because I really saw the potential in it, but man was it difficult to finish! Why, for instance, did the author insist on giving details for a background character’s life that she mentioned once, and it had no bearing on the story at hand? Meanwhile, other than the fact that the M protagonist is a well travelled manwhore, we know very little. As for our F protagonist, there’s more background available, but the one point is belabored so much that it lost its meaning all together. [Not that the topic/situation wasn’t traumatic enough to warrant the plot based off of it, but it was really heavy handed and made it feel like a cheap plot device rather than a character defining point.]

I downloaded it for free, so I didn’t expect much. I give the author credit for a creative overall story, but the execution was poor. So much potentional in the story.

Scott is doing her best to work and make it through school. Nick, one of her professors, comes into her work and decides she's the one he wants to intern at his architectural firm. They have a nearly instant connection and attraction to each other. But Scotty doesn't trust men after what happened to her, and Nick is the epitome of a man-whore. Can the two make it past their pasts and be together?

The plot of the book was good. You have your poor, struggling to make ends meet girl who gets swept off her feet by a rich man. Scotty has a traumatic past and has trust issues with men (rightfully so). I think the author had a great premise for the story, and did well in thag part of the book.

The scenes between Scotty and Nick were not done very well. It felt like a person who hadn't been intimate before was describing it, and that may be what the author was trying to do given Scotty's history. It just didn't read right or work.

I didn't like Nick's character. Yes, he loved her and did some right things with her, but he still did so many wrong things. Ava should've never been in the picture if he cared for Scotty, and he should've never spoke to her the way he did in his office without confirming rumors. That was just terrible and didn't add anything to their relationship or story.

Great beginning to a remarkable series

I often wait till read an entire series before leaving reviews. This is especially true when I've purchased the first part for free and then pay for subsequent installments. I both read the Kindle version and listened to the audio version of the book. Jacobs certainly lays out a remarkable and amazingly sad and shocking for 23-year old Scotty James. She guarded her heart and herself from the outside world, sharing who she is only with roommate and best-and-only friend, Jack. Until she meets Nick O'Hare, who gradually pierces her carefully constructed walls of protection. Of course she had to face not only the terrors of her past, but the everyday nightmares of stupid, thoughtless humans like Portia, partner in the architecture firm for which she works and where Nick is also a partner. Jacobs boy takes us through Scotty and Nick's journey more than adequately, with only minor hiccups here and there. She excels at characterization, but some of the dialog, especially the long, drawn out "thinking," ruminating and pondering was a little bothersome. But I still was anxious to downloads the next part quickly.

Life sucks!

Scotty is a young girl that has battled demons from a young age, worked hard to get a career juggling school and work and also an alcoholic mother! To have someone fall in love with her not only pays her salary so she can continue to have a career she has to endure issues at work on top of all that.
The girl deserved to have a bit of happiness but as usual life is a bitch and takes it away!
Portia is a jealous woman who has everything but because the one thing she can't have she is determined to take anyway even if it is a lie.
This is a very good read with its ups and downs of a young girl,I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

I couldn't finish it. Stopped reading at 40%. Hero is a total prick who will sleep with whoever is coming on to him, man or woman. The heroine... well, she's not likeable. The writing is such that it doesn't make the story flow properly. The author keeps repeating the same bloody sentences over and over again and the same events all the same (from the heroine's childhood). It's frankly annoying. The dialogue is totally off most of the time, it's forced, it doesn't feel right. Just stay away from that nightmare of a book. Not worth your time!!!

The characters in the book were written well and the plots within the story held my interest. Ms Jocoby also wrote good secondary characters that I hope are in the next book. There is lots of room for growth within the Scotty and her story touched me as I read how hard she worked at her college classes to excel while she worked to hold down a job. She has faith that her future will be better than her present situation and the author does a good job of making the reader cheer for her characters.

To the author, I can't wait to read the other three books. Congratulations on the storyline!

Cliffhanger

Oh I really wanted to like this book. The cover looked so promising. The synopsis was right up my alley, however there was no real road to the end. It just wound its way around so many subjects of whose who of musical composers and highly sought after art that I got bored. I refuse to give a review without finishing the book so I finished the book. I was bored and probably won't read any more of her work, but dont let this review be a deciding factor. I am just a nobody in the literary world.

This is hard for me to write a review because I don’t want to say anything negative, this just wasn’t the kind of romance I enjoy unfortunately I did not like how many other people were with the main character. So it didn’t feel like an happy relationship I couldn’t even finish it , got 3/4 way through and was so disappointed in Nick with Ava . Felt sad for Scotty and the way everyone treated her in this book , sorry 😞

This book had a great idea, but as the story continued to bring hot sexy nick is and how gorgeous Scotty was ,, it lost it reality's touch ,, I felt like I was reading a novel from my teenage years,, where everybody is Greek goddess

I unfortunately not gonna continue reading the second and third books.
