Tejano Tales to Tell in the Dark

Rate this book
There is a rich Tejano folklore that runs through the heart of Texas. Tales often shared by teens involving La Lechuza and La Llorona, werewolves and chupacabra, even giant armadillos. But there's so much more, so many fun, and often sinister, twists...

When sisters go looking for a legend in Caddo Lake State Park, or a group of friends park their car on the local train tracks chasing ghosts, they soon discover there's more to the story than what has been passed down. Who is the Hot Dog Man? Can a carnival game grant wishes or predict devastation? Should you eat the catfish in Medina Lake?

V. Castro brings on the nostalgia with this collection of creepy stories.

This was reminiscent of hearing stories classmates would tell other students to try to scare them (I mean this in the best way possible).
V. Castro infused the stories with places I know and legends I heard of as a child.
So, obviously, I love the idea of using well known Mexican urban legends for this short story collection.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the stories covered legends I knew (La Llorona, La Lechuza, chupacabras) and others I’d never heard of (Cheneques and Tamox).

Some of my favorite stories were: Little Boy Azul, Pancho Claus Vs. Krampus, Werewolf Quinceañera and The River’s Edge.

I found the collection to be a really enjoyable trip down memory lane. If you were a child who was warned that if you didn’t behave, La Llorona would come and get you, then this collection is for you. I’d also recommend this to anyone who enjoyed reading Goosebumps or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Thank you to Cemetery Gates Media for providing me with a physical ARC for review. Thank you to V Castro for writing these stories.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark with a Tex-Mex twist! Only thing missing was childhood scarring pictures to go with these awesome tales. Very fun!
