Fundable & Findable: The Brand-New Way to Fix Your Nonprofit Fundraising

Rate this book
More fundraising can’t fix your fundraising.

Too many nonprofits are unseen, unheard, and underfunded. And to break this nonprofit starvation cycle, we must tackle the problem differently.

So if your income has stalled, stop chasing donations. Gather your leadership team and do this instead:

To get funding, be fundable internally (theory of change and strategic plan) and findable externally (positioning strategy and marketing communications) before donor acquisition and retention.

This breakthrough book from Kevin L. Brown gives you the proven Fundable/Findable Framework to build a clear, compelling brand that maximizes your funding and advances social justice.

PRAISE FROM NONPROFIT LEADERS:

“Fundable & Findable demystifies, democratises, and delights.” — Dr. Stephanie S. Starling (England)

“This book is a lighthouse for many.” — Kushal Chakravorty (India)

“Don’t know how to talk about your organization? Do what Kevin L. Brown says. That’s all.” — Anne Hager (United States)

“Es uno de los libros más útiles, si no el más útil, debido a la generosidad de toda la información, fuentes, herramientas y guía paso a paso.” — Marta Lucia de la Cruz Federici (Colombia)

“Finally a Bible for nonprofit leaders by someone who knows the pains and the opportunities of fundraising well.” — Kassaga Arinaitwe (Uganda)

“There are few people who have a mastery of fundraising concepts like Kevin L. Brown.” — Tracy Ballot, CFRE (United States)

“You are truly the Robin Hood of our international development arena.” — Cheikh Eteka Traore (Nigeria)

“The advice is concrete, crisp, and fun to read. So many organizations keep looking for magic, quick-fix formulas for fundraising. Kevin makes it clear that there is magic, but it’s never quick. Do yourself a favor and read this book.” — Jo Chopra-McGowan (England)

“As a neurodiverse founder of a nonprofit who doesn’t come from a corporate/finance background, the amount of funding information at first was completely overwhelming. Fundable & Findable makes it more digestible.” — Ryan Burlak (Australia)

"It's awesome." — Kevin Starr (United States)

Kevin L. Brown is a writer, a speaker, and CEO of the nonprofit hybrid Mighty Ally. He initially spent 15 years building private sector brands. From Apple to adidas, Formula One to fintech startups. And in his first four corporate gigs, Kevin helped each company scale towards acquisition, including one he co-founded.

Then, a passion for the orphan crisis (his why) led to living in Uganda, followed by South Africa, Mauritius, and Malaysia. In 2017, he co-founded Mighty Ally — Uganda’s second-ever B Corp.

Kevin is an Acumen East Africa Fellow, plus an advisor for two grantmakers: Roddenberry Foundation and Greenwood Place. He served on the board of Impact Hub, won a Valiente Award at SXSW and a NEXT Award for Startup of the Year, was named an Executive Influencer by Billboard Magazine, and proudly sports a torn Achilles from the Ironman World Championship.

Three daughters from Uganda and China fuel his work to end poverty and injustice. Years ago, he and his high-school sweetheart wife sold their house, car, and everything they owned. And they set out as a nomadic family of five — with only a backpack and suitcase each — to live on every continent together by 2030.

We have received a gift of $8 million from MacKenzie Scott. And we have built a bold strategy where we are going to invest in branding, fundraising, training, diversity and inclusion, co-funding, partners, and so many other important things that we could not afford to do before. This book was essential to these decisions! I strongly recommend it!

"Big Idea: Your distinct idea of impact. Defining your mission isn't enough for this work section of your theory of change. Because many organizations are tackling the same problem for the same people. Some may even have the same mission statement. But very few (if any) should share your big idea".
This is one of my favorite statements in this amazing book.
Fundable & Findable is now my companion in this fundraising journey!

This book is a straight shot of the Mighty Ally approach: practical, usable, and grounded in what it actually takes for nonprofits to build a strong brand and organization. Fundable & Findable lays out the framework clearly, and will be a handbook for many a nonprofit leader looking to strengthen their organizations from the inside out.

The writing is simple, engaging, and smart. The step by step style of writing was easy to follow. The many global quotes added depth to the points in the book. I plan to purchase several more copies of this book and give to other nonprofit organizations since I feel this book would be beneficial to their growth and success.

I have been doing the exercises from your incredible book for 15 mins daily this last fortnight - it's been so eye opening! I especially love that the author acknowledges the complex dynamics of the fundraising world and the origins from colonial ideologies. This book is a set of tools on how to make it work inspite of them. Doesn’t whitewash the reality. Great book and a great read! Highly recommend!

His book, 'Fundable & Findable' resonates so deeply. It’s practical, doable, and builds on intuition and empathy.

If I were on the board of an organization—or knew someone with fire in their belly starting an NGO—I’d put this book in their hands the next time we sat down for coffee. Fundable & Findable isn’t another fluffy “change the world” manifesto. It’s a field guide for surviving and thriving in the chaotic, cutthroat, and often bizarre world of NGO work. Yes, it’s about impact, but more than that, it’s about finding your voice, rising above the noise, and refusing to be just another well-meaning blip in the donor inbox. Kevin shows you how to stand out without selling out—staying true to your mission and more importantly true to yourself. This is the book you want to have in your back pocket... that you want to be able to quote from... before you wade into the arena.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Kevin and his great team at Mighty Ally and saw firsthand the impact his approach had on our organization. Fundable & Findable is a powerful, practical guide that distills his proven framework into something every nonprofit can use. I now have both the hard copy and the audiobook — and I keep returning to them. Clear, compelling, and genuinely helpful. Thanks, Kevin for a great read / listen! A must buy/listen/read for anyone in the nonprofit / NGO space.

Been following Kevin for years on LinkedIn and have been able to implement his content in really beneficial ways in my work! To be able to access all of it in one book is incredible. I’ve sent it to so many colleagues and would recommend it to anybody running a small nonprofit that is wondering how to break through to the next stage.

I see many NPOs that are so in the weeds doing amazing work and scraping for every bit of many they can. Been there! If you can take the time to read this book and implement the strategy (findable) and marketing (findable) steps inside, you will be see some incredible things happen for your organization.

The investment of this book is worth it! Thanks Kevin for passing along so much great knowledge for the sector globally. 5 stars for sure ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I find that it stands out for its refreshingly practical and straightforward approach. Unlike many funding books that get lost in theory, this one takes you by the hand and leads you through a step-by-step journey, which, if you follow, you'll be blown away by the results.

## Key Strengths
- **Interactive Learning:** Each chapter contains exercises that build upon each other, ensuring you're not just reading but actively developing your organisation's funding approach/strategy/theory of change.

- **Simplified Theory of Change:** The book revolutionizes how we think about theory of change, breaking it down into manageable components that actually make sense to funders.

- **Marketing Mastery:** The author introduces proven marketing techniques specifically adapted for the charitable sector, helping organizations stand out in funding applications.

## Practical Impact
What sets this book apart is its focus on immediate application. By the end, you don't just have theoretical knowledge - you have a complete, workable funding strategy, marketing approach, and theory of change that you can implement immediately.

## Who Should Read This?

This book is invaluable for:
- Charity leaders seeking to improve their funding success
- Fundraising professionals wanting to refresh their approach
- Small charities needing a practical fundraising framework
- Organizations struggling to articulate their impact effectively

## Final Verdict

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

This book is a game-changer for charitable organisations seeking funding. Its practical exercises, clear methodology, and focus on real-world application make it an essential resource. The simplified approach to complex concepts like theory of change and marketing strategy makes it accessible while maintaining professional rigor.

Whether you're new to fundraising or a seasoned professional, this book offers fresh perspectives and practical tools that will transform how you approach funding applications.

Buy it. I promise you will NOT regret it (as long as you commit to doing the exercises).

I have gone through this book two times in 2 months. I can't get enough of how articulate Kevin is in his knowledge on funding. For a small organization like ours: The Addis Clinic, funding is one of the major keys to unlock a world of service delivery we envision and here's a cheat code: Fundable and findable

A Game-Changer for Every Non-Profit Leader

We are living in a time where the global aid landscape is rapidly shifting. These dramatic shifts can leave many of us overwhelmed and under-resourced. Findable and Fundable by Kevin L. Brown arrives like a breath of fresh air within this space. It is not just another fundraising manual, this book is a strategic guide to reimagining your mission, refining your methods, and reconnecting with your purpose.

Brown doesn’t just offer a temporary fix; he delivers a framework for sustainability and growth. He challenges readers to go beyond grant writing and rethink how to future-proof their vision, scale their impact, and break free from the exhausting cycles that keep so many organisations stuck.

What truly sets this book apart is its empowering tone. It’s practical, insightful, and above all, hopeful. Brown reminds us that real change is not only possible... it is within reach!

An absolute must-read for anyone in the non-profit world who is ready to move from surviving to thriving.

I’m planning to get copies of this powerful book for four visionary CEOs here in Uganda who are doing extraordinary work in their fields. My hope is that by sharing it with them, they’ll be inspired not only by the content but also to pass it forward—purchasing more copies for their teams and networks.

Supporting this project is, to me, one of the most meaningful ways to express deep gratitude to Kevin for the incredible work he’s done. His message deserves to reach far and wide, and I’m proud to be part of that ripple effect.

I have helped raised millions of dollars for great organizations. But after reading Fundable & Findable, by Kevin Brown, I feel like I could have been - and can be - a lot more successful helping the clients and organizations I care about now.

Why is this book worth your time?

If you are a nonprofit leader, you can use Fundable & Findable as a method to write a new users manual for your organization. Brand and communications will take the leading roles in your internal operations and fundraising. Based on your organization’s “theory of change,” the new manual will help harmonize why your organization exists with the composition of your staff, with your communications assets and tactics, and with the process of asking for money. Everything resonates together. Kevin’s process is thought-provoking and logical. The clarity of the writing left me feeling that none of this is complicated, it just requires hard work and dedication.

This is a new take on how to fundraise as a nonprofit, and covers all the areas you need to focus on BEFORE even thinking about your social media and external comms! I work in communications with nonprofits and I agree that when it comes to fundraising, what's 'under the bonnet' is much more important than the dressing you put on it for external use. Kevin goes into this in detail, taking you through a number of simple steps to ensure that the engine of your nonprofit is working well - before you take time trying to engage funders. I am looking forward to seeing what results this approach leads to and I think this book will be useful for all nonprofit founders, leaders and staff.

Each chapter could have been a standalone book, but Kevin was so generous, efficient and comprehensive in this book. Moreover, it is veeeeeery practical and serves as a guide away from mere theories. I am happy that this book exists and I thank Kevin for all of his work to support the nonprofit sector.

As someone who has been a hybrid communications-fundraiser for most of my career, screaming as loud as I can that fundraising does not exist without communications, your book spoke to me. I have it all tabbed up and sitting on my desk, where I am sure it will stay for many years. I'm now leading my team through your process outlined in the book, which has uncovered such fantastic insights for us.

Strategy before the ask.

As a long-time follower of Kevin L. Brown, I had to grab a copy of Fundable & Findable. I love the foundation he lays for fundraising in getting strategy and theory of change in place first before rushing to the ask. Give it a read if you're in nonprofit comms and donor engagement.
