As The Rain Falls

Rate this book
In Le Port, nothing stays buried. At least, not for long.

In the haunting first installment of the St. Madeleine Series, As The Rain Falls unravels the heartbreaking journey leading to Beckett Evans’ infamous arrest, told through his eyes and those of Cassandra Rivera, the youngest sister of the man he nearly killed.

But long before the trial, Cassandra’s life was already a battlefield. Raised in a home ruled by violence and fear, she’s endured the unthinkable after being raped by her own brother. Silenced by her family, she’s spent years teaching herself how to survive through this betrayal, burying her pain beneath a carefully crafted facade.

For Cassandra, pain is familiar. Safety is not. Until Beckett.

The boy next door becomes her light in the dark, the only person who sees through her bad reputation and the shattered pieces she tries to hide from the world. With him, she feels safe. With him, she starts to believe in the possibility of something more.

Before the trial, there was the truth.

As friendship and forbidden love collide, Cassandra and Beckett are forced to navigate the wreckage of their families, dark secrets coming to light with the promise of keeping them apart. From stolen moments to the night everything spirals out of control, Cassandra faces an impossible choice. But how much of herself is she willing to sacrifice? And what if telling the truth isn’t enough?

I have to be honest. I didn’t like this book, I LOVED it.

As The Rain Falls is raw, heartbreaking, and powerful in a way that stays with you long after you have finished the last page. It’s not just a love story, it’s a story about survival, trauma, and finding light in the darkest places.

The characters felt so real. Cassandra and Beckett aren’t perfect, and that’s exactly why I connected with them. Their pain, their mistakes, the way they try to hold it all together… it just felt honest. There were moments I had to literally put the book down and take a breath because it hit THAT hard. But that’s what made it so special, it made me feel everything and more!

And it’s not just about Cassie and Beckett, every character in this book has so much depth. Their whole friend group feels like real people, each of them dealing with their own pain in complicated ways. You get to know them, and you just want to hug them all. It’s one of those stories where you’re constantly feeling things, grief, frustration, hope, love, because it all feels so real and raw. You just can’t walk away from it untouched.

Cassie’s story really broke my heart. Everything she goes through, all the pain she carries and the way she’s forced to stay quiet, it’s reallyy heavy. (Please check TWs!) But the way it’s written, with so much care and empathy, made it feel real and that’s what makes this book so amazing. Watching her slowly let Beckett in, letting herself be seen and loved for who she really is… it was beautiful, and at the same time, so heartbreaking.💔🥲

And it’s not just Cassie, Beckett goes through so much, too. Everything that happens to him, everything he carries… it’s heavy. The way he handles it, the way he keeps showing up with so much care and love despite everything… I just wanted to reach into the book and hug him. Honestly, I just want both of them to be safe, happy, and loved. They deserve it sooo much!🫂

Cassie and Beckett’s love just felt REAL. It’s not perfect, and they go through so much, but the way they care for each other is so genuine. Even with all the chaos around them, they somehow find moments of peace in each other.🩷

This book goes to some really dark places, but it handles everything with so much care. It’s not just about the pain, it’s about surviving it, growing through it, and finding moments of hope along the way. It’s one of those stories that just gets under your skin in the best way.🥲

AUGUST 15. Save the date. Trust me, you will want to be here for this one, the emotionally and beautifully written story that you won’t ever forget.
I am so thankful to be able to read this book before the release, so so so thankful!💕💕💕

i’m so grateful to have read such a beautiful story.
cassandra is so strong and i love her character. she’s not perfect but i’m glad we can see her all of her flaws but still understand why she acts the way she does. she’s just a girl trying to survive the hell she has been going through all of her life and it’s honestly painful to read because you really feel for her. her struggles felt so real and i’m glad she can rely a little bit on beckett at one point, even if she feels like she doesn’t deserve him.
i really like beckett’s character as well, he’s truly good to his core and even though he’s grieving and very few people show up for him, he’s doing the most for his friends. i really hope he’ll deal healthily with learning the circumstances of his sister’s death.
lucia feels like a central character and every thing we learned about her made me sad because she didn’t deserve any of this. i look forward to know more about her story too.
i’ve grown so attached to the characters whether they were the main or side ones. cassandra and beckett are such beautiful characters. they would do anything for each other and to save to ones they love. the friend group is so interesting they all are very different from each other which i love.
i teared up many times during my read, it’s honestly a hard read so be prepared before you dive in. but i still 100% recommend it. sooo excited to read more of the series 🩷

oh wow. this book had me sobbing so so much. cass is such a special character, and so resilient. her story made me so sad, esp because i related a lot to her. her brother is a nasty person and i truly hope he is dead because he deserves all bad things. BUT. i love beckett so much!! he loves cass so much, and his protectiveness over her warmed my heart so much. he’s such a sweet sweet boy. and i esp love all the side characters. lucia seemed like such a sweet sweet girl and it’s unfortunate the way her life ended, but i feel such a connection to her. i’m so ready for the 2nd book and for cass to get her justice!!

this book completely wrecked me in the best possible way. As the rain falls is one of those books that doesn’t just narrate a story, it makes you feel it. It digs deep into themes of grief, healing, love and survival; it’s just not about romance (though i love my beckettcassie🤏🏻) it’s about pain, strength, friendships, normal teenage experiences, self growth and moving on.

The characters are what makes this story amazing. Cassandra is a real flawed teenage girl, her mistakes and her trauma and her thoughts process feel so human. Her growth was amazing to witness , watching her go from just surviving to actually living - even if it’s messy - was something very powerful. Same goes with Beckett, the way he deals with grief and with having to move on is so honest and raw. It’s so rare to see a male character like him : gentle, patient and understanding. He doesn’t try to be the “hero” and fix Cassie, he’s just there for her.

And it’s not only about Cassandra and Beckett, every single characters has depth: kayla’s struggles with her sister and alice, angelina’s dealing with loss and finding her own personality, LUCIA .. i could write essays on lucia my beautiful baby .. she may be dead but no one is ever going to forget her, she was just so smart and complex to the point that everyone had different understanding of her. What makes these side characters so powerful is that they’re not just there to support the main plot—they have their own stories, their own heartbreak, their own healing arcs.

There’s something about how Lorena Almeida just lets the characters breathe, not rushing their healing time, there aren’t any solutions to pain or easy answers .. and that’s what makes the story real. There aren’t many big plot twists or dramatic reveals, but they’re huge emotionally, they carry so much weight because they reflect how real trauma and healing often unfold - in quiet choices. And honestly I think that’s why this book felt so personal, why i saw myself in it and saw people i know.

I honestly have so many things to say and I don’t even know where to start. This is such a painful yet beautiful story it genuinely felt like I was right there with the characters living in the moment with them and feeling their pain. This book doesn’t shy away from the brutal reality of certain experiences, but instead approaches them with a rawness and depth that feels deeply human and real. It feels this way because every character has a backstory and you can clearly observe the way it takes a toll on their mental health. This book shows how complex the human mind can be and how difficult it is to pull yourself out of the darkest places in your own mind. When you feel like something has been missing your whole life, you tend to look for it everywhere but never fully believe that you deserve it, so while it is true that love doesn’t magically heal you, surrounding yourself with the right people can encourage you to fight for yourself and for the life you deserve to live. Cassie’s strength felt so real, not the kind that’s forced or perfect, but messy, painful, and honest and this book perfectly showed the quiet power of surviving and reclaiming your life. As for Beckett, carrying the weight of grief and guilt is one of the most painful things in the world. Moreover, his relationship with his parents and the expectations put on him clearly left him wounded. They’re both scarred in different ways and they both still need to heal.

I loved the moments they had and I’m so happy they found comfort in each other. Beckettcassie deserve the world!! (I also love what Mateo and Angelina got going on I hope we get to see more of them)

I’m so so thankful I got to read this before the release and I cannot wait for the second book 🩷

i genuinely have no words. absolutely none.

this book was so incredibly well written. every single character was written with so much care and love. it made me love them all so much. you really felt such a connection to all of them. this story was so beautiful and heartbreaking, i loved every second of it (i was FREAKING OUT AT THE END SCREAMING AND CRYING.)

cassandra and beckett are so well loved by me. they are so gentle with each other. their pain becomes each others. they protective one another so deeply. they’re also very silly. beckettcass can be themselves with one another, show each other the dark jaded pieces of themselves that they think no one cares for but they do. it’s very refreshing to see because of everything they go through individually. it’s kinda hard not to fall in love with their love.

cassandra really just took my heart and ran away with it. all the pain that she goes through, you really felt it all with her. SOMEBODY GET HER OUT OF LE PORT ITS HER PRISON :( you can see her struggle with her memory and how she perceives things to always be her fault because that is what he made her felt. cassandra rivera is not a weak character. she is strong, beautiful, with so much courage and i can’t wait for her to really truly realize this. seeing cassandra what it truly feels like to be loved with beckett was so incredible. THE WRITING !!! beckett sees cassandra. beckett is the closest to safety she’s ever had. :( disney princess cassandra rivera is real btw.

slow clap for beckett evans. THATS PRINCE. beckett is just so so good. he takes care of the people that he loves without fault. he makes sure everybody’s okay. he’s doing all of this while grieving the one constant he’s had his entire life, his little sister lucia. and while he isn’t perfect and he doesn’t grieve in the most healthiest way. he really tries his best to keep the people that he loves safe. he’s tired. he’s just tired.

beckettcass you’ll get your happy ending ILL MAKE SURE OF IT.

i love the found family trope so bad. antony, mateo, angelina, kayla, beckett, and cassandra that is my family (alice too.) they are all so different from each other that seeing them all together is so real. you wouldn’t think that they all mesh together but they do. im very attached to all of them. lucia we miss you.

HE NEEDS TO BE DEAD IN A DITCH. THAT IS THE DEVIL AND HE NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH IDGAF HOW OR WHEN JUST HE NEEDS TO BE GONE. and i need it to suffer like how cassandra and lucia had suffered for YEARS because of that nasty piece of garbage.

this book made me tear up and cry so many times i can’t wait for the second book to see all of the characters that i’ve so deeply fallen in love with 💝

EVEN IF ITS DIFFICULT
EVEN IF ITS IMPOSSIBLE

My rating is 3.9. I can't believe it took me almost four months to finish this book 😭😭 but god I loved this book and really enjoyed reading it. I loved the characters especially Cassie and Angelina. Speaking of them I adored reading about their friendship slowly developing throughout the book. That scene where they bonded in the bathroom after Cassie broke up with Caleb was one of my fave scene's in the book. I also really liked Cassie's sorta friendship with Tony, they butted heads a lot and Tony didn't even like her at first but by the end anyone could tell they cared for each other. I really liked Beckett too, reading about him and Lucia's relationship and how he blamed himself for what happened to her had me tearing up.

Now about the romance, usually romance is my favorite part of the book but not in this case. I kinda preferred reading about the friendships between all the character's. Like reading about all of them hanging out and fighting over stupid shit was so much fun, need 50 more chapters like that for real. Don't get me wrong though I really liked Beckett and Cassie together, they're perfect for each other and I was literally kicking my feet giggling reading about them pining for each other and Beckett being jealous of Caleb

Another thing I really liked was how well written Cassie's trauma was written. You could tell the author put a lot of research into how Cassie being abused effected her mental health and slowly effected her relationship with everyone around her. This book was also great at. creating suspense and terror, some scenes like with Nathanial or Cassie being jumped in school but mostly just Nathanial had me putting down the book for a while because I was too nervous to read on.

There were some thing's I didn't like though. The writing felt kinda childish at times but I chalked that up to being in Cassie's head and her being childlike sometimes. Also the usage of exclamation sometimes felt too much. But anyway I can't for the next books, I'm really excited to read more about the other characters. Especially Angie, Matteo, Kayla and Tony. I don't know too much about Alice but I am sorta curious about her too.

This book will stay with me for along time. Emotional, turbelant, horrific and so heartbreaking. Reading the journey of Cass I need time to digest, dissect and I need to breathe. A rollercoaster of angst, tears and grief, but also love within a group of friends who all have issues, secrets they are hiding and the loss of their friend Lucio. But alongside this Cass has her own secrets that she can't share , until Beckett, Lucio's brother, her longtime neighbour shows compassion, friendship and healing. Together they try their best to just live, taking one day at a time. It all comes to a head with destructive behaviour, Cass is breaking more each day. Beckett is struggling with his guilt and Cass's emotions too.
I couldn't put this book down, and having come to the end, I need more. The next book to continue the story, this needs a HAE. But in order to get there, things have to be put right, people need to get justice and I hope this series is more than two books!
Totally recommend! Goimg to be in my top ten this year.
What a talented author, such a debut book to share. For writing aboutd the darkest of subjects with understanding, knowledge and care. Eagerly awaiting book two!

Oh my fucking gosh this emotionally drained me so much. When beckett said the last line of “i’m just tired” fucking hell did I feel it in my bones.

I picked up this book when I got super busy and the start of this book was slow for me at that time which caused me to fall in a slump. Tonight I finally got past the first 25% of the book and finished the rest tonight because I simply couldn’t stop reading it. I love Cass. Cass deserves everything. I wish Cass all the happiness in the world. Fuck this town to the depths of hell.

Also, I read somewhere that this series will have an academic rivals and female stalker trope in other books. It’s like this series was written for me.

this book was heavy--possibly the heaviest fiction i've ever read--and while there were times where i had to stop, take a break, and come back to it, i'm so glad i did. this book is truly one of a kind. it's self published, meaning there were a few errors and typos throughout it, but that didn't even matter. you can tell Lorena Almeida was 100% committed to telling the story she fleshed out for these characters and did not once stray from her raw approach. it was heartbreakingly realistic and so well done, and i can't wait for the next book.

I’ve been reading this book for the past few days i just finished it and WOW. For a debut novel it was so well written it was heartbreaking, emotional a roller coaster of emotions. Cassandra broke my heart her story is pure sadness. Beckett’s story was also very sad. But their love story was absolutely beautiful. This book is more than 900 pages but the pace is so well made i didn’t even realized it was long. I need cass and beckett’s happy ending like tomorrow cant wait for book 2

This author deserves everything, she deserves to be incredibly successful after this book and the ones to come.

Everything in this book is perfect, even with heavy themes I felt it was handled respectfully and nothing was problematic like many books today with such themes.

Beckett and Cassie are perfect, I'm anxious for their next book, may my babies be happy, seriously 😭😭 after all this 💔

And after them I need Mateo and Angelina, they will be everything in my life, seriously.
