✨Spoiler-Free Review✨
Stardust and Silence by Ashley Willingham
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨(3.5 rounded up to 4)

Stardust and Silence by Ashley Willingham was such a fun and imaginative read. Every time I pick up one of her books, I’m reminded of how wildly creative she is! Her storytelling is vivid, immersive, and honestly just beautiful. 💕

This story is a gender-flipped retelling of The Little Mermaid - but set in space… with pirates. Yes. Space pirates. And somehow, it works so well 🤣🪐🏴‍☠️

I’m typically not someone who gravitates toward sci-fi or dystopian stories. That’s just not my usual comfort zone. 😅 But because Ashley wrote it, I knew I wanted to give it a chance - and I’m so glad I did! I ended up really loving how unique and different (for me) it felt.🙌🤭

The only thing that occasionally pulled me out of the story was my own struggle to fully picture some of the non-human characters. 😬 That’s very much a me thing - my brain sometimes has a hard time conceptualizing beings that aren’t fully human. 😮‍💨 But even then, it didn’t take away from the creativity or the heart of the story. 👏

It was funny. It was strange in the best way. It was adventurous and whimsical while still carrying emotional depth. 💕 If you love fairy tale retellings but want something completely fresh and unexpected, this one is absolutely worth picking up - even if sci-fi isn’t usually your thing!! 🥰💕🙌

‘Twas a good time. 😌 A space setting is not my usual flavor of fantasy, but I ended up liking it. There were actually quite a few elements that are not my cup of tea,😂 but the writing convinced me to be invested. I just love this author’s writing. I think a novella after the events of this book would be interesting. I don’t know why I started crying when the characters prayed, but it is past 12am, so that might have something to do with it.

Content - clean as marketed (no spice, profanity, or graphic violence), Christian worldview is important to the storyline

This was a unique book....

First of all, I would recommend going into this book expecting it to be fantasy, that just so happens to be set in space. This world's space does not function the same as ours: it is more like the ocean. Humans can breathe in this space, although not for long and it is very cold to them, and there is sound. My mind had trouble at times separating the real space from this fantasy space since on the outside it looks the same- just functions different.

I think the descriptions of things, particularly of the aliens, could have been more detailed, as I had trouble visualizing them. The big climax scene at the end I also had a bit of trouble visualizing some things. There is a scene where the MMC had to go to the witch king for help (as the little mermaid character does) but it felt odd to me that the Holy Spirit basically led him to do this, when the witch king is being controlled/highly influenced by the Silence (which is this world's version of the devil). I had trouble reconciling a pirate queen (but I guess she was more of a scavenger?) who is a strong person of faith was difficult to me.

It was an overall fun read with an interesting mix of things- I mean I would have never have thought of little mermaid plus pirates plus space! The role of music is interesting as well.

ARC Review - Stardust and Silence by Ashley Willingham.

I have no idea where to start with this one!
It gave Guardians of the Galaxy vibes with the space creatures and pirates - mixed with a reverse Little Mermaid retelling!! If you think you can picture it, you’re wrong, you can’t, you will just have to read for yourself.

The amount of tropes in this book, also includes:
Forbidden love.
Fated mates.
He will do anything to protect her.
With adult characters in this romantasy, slow burn clean Christian story…. With vibes of hope and love.

The FMC Lyra, is such an awesome character. She’s strong and has a goal in mind that leads her to find her actual calling and an adventure she never saw coming.

Vaelion waited so long to find his mate and when it finally happened, everything about it felt wrong and right at the same time. He gave up everything and everyone for what he prayed for.

Ashely’s writing is always easy to follow with a flowing story.
This was a fun and fast paced story, very different but unfortunately this won’t be a book for everyone, however it will be IT for the reader who needs to read it. Recommend for clean romantasy readers as well as those who enjoy fairytale retellings.

I think it's my first time going into hardcore fantasy. I mean, I am not sure if this book is hardcore fantasy, but it seemed that way to me. I had a really hard time understanding the convoluted explanations of the world and understanding how everything worked in it.

I was attracked by the good reviews, and it seems that it was a cool concept. I think it didn't help that I am not an English native speaker, and the story was too complicated for my brain to understand :(

Ashley’s writing is always so much fun!

This one was a little outside of my usual - not typically a fan of human/other species (in this case alien) relationships, but I enjoyed the story! Action-packed and entertaining, with themes of redemption and the message that it’s never too late to come back to God.

Content considerations: no spice - kisses only, no language, some violence

I don’t normally write reviews, but this book deserves it. I have always been really into Romantasy. It has been very hard to find a good Romantasy book that didn’t contain a lot of unnecessary garbage, as well as having a good story line. This book is very well written, and she was true to her word in not having any swearing or “spice” in the book. The thing that drove this book home for me was the fact that it was a great Romantasy story, AND it also was heavy in Christian Allegory. I loved that she had the characters praise and worship our God. That it showed how they relied on Him through this adventure. I won’t spoil the ending, but the gist is that the characters essentially realize what God called them to do and they act on that, confident in the God that they serve. It had such a great balance between the Romantasy/Fantasy aspect and the Christian aspect. It was so encouraging to read as a believer, but I can also see this book evangelizing to the lost as well. Of course, it was obvious that this was a Little Mermaid retelling, but unlike most books, she used the basic concept of it and made it her own completely. As you can see from my start and end date, I read this book in a day. It had me hooked from the first page I read, until the last sentence of the book. I even read the Author’s Note! (Which, admittedly, I never do). I am thoroughly impressed by her books, by her as an author, and I look forward to reading more of her books.

I decided to read this because of its rating but several reviews state they haven’t read the book.
It’s very rare with a fantasy I say it’s too much or too out there but this was it!
There’s pirates and mermaids but it’s in space?
Can we explain how we’re swimming in space or is it more of a floating thing?

I couldn’t connect with the story or either of the main characters. They seemed to be strong but a lot of the underlying issues were insecurity and maybe even being selfish.
The last book had such a strong Christian message but this was the opposite.
Implying God will call you to go to a Witch King to get what you want and that’s surrender?
Going against family, friends and your people that’s something God will call you to?
Nope doesn’t matter what happens from there God is holy he cannot sin. He definitely will not call us to sin or to darkness.
Then we’re talking about emptying ourselves now we’re really getting into witchcraft.
The pieces and idea may have been good but this needed a BIG edit to pare back. Too much distracted from the story and made what should have been exciting boring.

ADORED this book. It’s well written, mirrors and flips the Little Mermaid story, and adds a biblical twist to the redemption of the story. I feel like it’s left me a better person in the process. And don’t we need more of that? I’d be so happy to have my teenage daughter pick this up, and I hope to add more to my collection of books I’d have no qualms about handing to her and her bookworm friends.

This is a retelling of the Little Mermaid, though not the actual version that was written, but more like the animated version Disney did. I do like this version of The Little Mermaid way better though, because it involved pirates, mermaids/mermen, and a lot of faith.

The story starts out when Lyra is 13 years old. There is a known celebration that her family enjoys. She receives a couple of presents from her parents, the pirate queen and king. One of the items is an adorable fox creature (that is teal and purplish) and the other is a very special piece of jewelry. When something happens that causes Lyra to be swept off in a space drift (that is like the ocean how it is described), she is saved by a Celestari, which is a type of space mermaid/merman. This creature she has only ever heard of before but it is more like a folklore that doesn't necessarily exist, but there he is before her. His name is Vaelion, and he is around the same age she is (though he's lived for a long time as his life stretches out hundreds of years in comparison to humans).

Twenty-two years pass by. There are a lot of things that take place around Lyra, and she depends on the Creator to guide her path, but something happens that causes her to lose her balance in her understanding of her purpose. When she thinks she sees Vaelion again, instead she finds herself near a Voiceless who seems to have a sort of scent like the Celestari, but this man has legs. Little does she know, Vaelion has been cursed by the Witchking (basically a male Ursula).

There are several things about this book that I really loved. I felt like there was a type of universe that I got to explore. I was trying to imagine the space being more like the ocean. It was really unique. I don't know how the humans are able to breathe, but that is besides the point, as this is some other universe that perhaps allows humans to be able to breathe on ships that actually sail around in space, but they can drown in space when not on board the ships. While the Celestari cannot breathe on place of the ships.

The way that the Celestari were described and how they had to find a Resonance, which is someone that their soul is connected to (like a soulmate). They also have beautiful voices with many songs and even the ability to cast shadows around. It was really lovely. There is even a trident in this but it retracts from large to small. Their skin is a dark blue with star-like glittery skin (like Twilight merpeople Avatars).

Lyra has bright red hair (like Ariel). She is a pirate princess and is very close to her family and the friends she has made over time as well as the crew on their ship. I loved this. She was a very interesting person.

What I did not like about this book is that I didn't really feel like there was enough of a way to communication to form a close knit bond between the two main characters, but that is always something that I have been bothered by the Little Mermaid story as a whole, which is probably why I have never been too crazy about it. I wish that Vaelion could express himself a little better to Lyra. I do feel that Vaelion accepted Lyra easily and all that came with her. He didn't seem to be upset when she would steal things, as if he was just like, "She's my Resonance and that's all that matters." I do think that Vaelion was able to get to know her really well compared to how she was in confusion and didn't really get to know him.

Also, what happened to the star map necklace? What happened to the other Pirate Queen? What about the missing brother that we came across that one time? I wanted some closure on those things. Also, now that they know that everyone is able to come to The Creator, what is life like afterwards? I wanted an epilogue of something.

It was a really beautiful story though otherwise. I loved it. It felt so much like a lovely beautiful Christian faerytale that I could embrace and love.

Review
This is so bittersweet. Love that he is always there to protect her and also, she is trying her best to find her father and her crew again. He saved her so many times (can’t spoil it) and had been kind and sweet to her even her fox like him. Though she didn’t know who he was because he looked different from what he looked like when she first met him and he couldn’t speak but as they been together 3 days, she noticed his expressions and also understanding him. They both comfort each other and also being there for each other throughout the journey of finding her father and her crew.

Really a beautiful story and love that they both cried out to God for help when they don’t know what to do and also for protection and strength too. And the people around them though his people don’t approve of their relationship they never give up. And love the fact that they stood together with one voice to defeat the evil because they put their trust in God. This book made me smile, swoon, cry, imagining the voices matching together as one in harmony and also God in control of everything.

What I learn from it?
Unity. As I read this book the song “One Voice” kept on playing in my mind especially when I read the part of them standing together and singing together to fight the evil one. In life, we don’t have to fight our spiritual battles alone, we can all come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to encourage each other and pray for one another.

If you like the feel of pirates, magic, battles and also stardust, this is a book for you. This is the third book of the gender-flipped fairytale series.

I was gifted complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own. Thanks to @ashleywillinghamauthor for the ARC.

Several of Ashley Willingham’s books have been on my TBR for some time. While I knew she writes Christian fantasy, I hadn't payed close enough attention to realize one series were also fairytale retellings. When I set out to read only Christian fairytale retellings for February, I was pleased to discover that Stardust & Silence is not only a fairytale retelling but fit the sci-fi/dystopian retelling prompt I had in my challenge.

The premise of the book being a flipped gender Little Mermaid retelling set in space peaked my interest, and I was intrigued to see how the author worked in the mermaid and sea elements in a space setting. Having grown up with Little Mermaid and being a huge Star Wars fan, it seemed like a strange but awesome concept. I was a bit worried that Vaelion’s skin being blue might be too similar to Avatar, but that wasn’t the case at all. There were so many other parts of the Little Mermaid that could have been written in a way that fell flat in the space setting, but the author wove everything together so beautifully.

I wasn’t at all prepared for what I was about to read. This book is a work of art. Truly. From the setting to the characters to the story arc, this book was perfection (for me at least) and easily ranks in my top 10 Christian fiction reads of all time. It was that good. All of the various elements blended together into the perfect HARMONY (you’ll appreciate that after reading the book).

Both MCs, Lyra the Pirate Princess and Vaelion the Celestari, face individual struggles and traumas. They are brought together as Lyra falls overboard her family's ship, The Thalassara. Despite Lyra being a human, enemy to the Celestari, he saves her life and uses precious stardust, his life source, to heal her wounds. They part ways but think of each other often, feeling a strong pull to one another. Destiny brings them together again twenty two years later, but this time Vaelion has taken on a new form which Lyra doesn’t recognize. They embark on an adventure filled with hidden identities, forbidden love, deals with the dreaded Witchking, and banishment.

What I enjoyed about the story:
🧜🏿‍♂️ Epic creativity in how the original fairytale is retold
🎶 Forbidden love you’ll have to root for
🧜🏿‍♂️ Rich Christian allegory told through the Creator and The Silence
🎶 Themes of musicality
🧜🏿‍♂️ Space travel that is reminiscent of other great space sci-fis & fantasies (Peter Pan, Star Wars, etc.)
🎶 An ending so spiritually deep and powerful you’ll have goosebumps

⚠️ Content Warnings:
-Death of parents/siblings
-Mild violence
-Betrayal/coup

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars

Whether you prefer fantasy or sci-fi, romance, or faith-filled stories-this book is for you as it has all three. One reviewer mentioned the fantasy elements seemed too far-fetched for space (like a mermaid in space), yet many space fantasies are extremely far-fetched. I have to disagree. I think the author did an incredible job making something that seems like it would be so unbelievable to be utterly convincing and organically fit into the story. The skill of the writing turns the "far-fetched" characters into a unique and charming story.

I could not put this book down, and can’t wait to read the other two books in the series. I hope one day the author will write a sequel for this story, maybe a novella? Be sure to add this book to your TBR, it’s a must read for readers of Christian Fiction! If you're like me, I think you'll find this story really strikes the perfect CHORD 🎵.

Oh my goodness, this book!

I am a huge fan of Ashley Willingham 's fairytale retellings because they feature main characters who are 30+, are clean and no-spice, beautifully written, and carry themes of faith throughout. Stardust and Silence is no exception, and it might even be my favorite of the series.

This story is a gender-flipped Little Mermaid retelling with swashbuckling Treasure Planet vibes. Set in outer space and complete with intelligent life forms from lots of different planets, the world building is fantastic.

Vaelion, crown Prince of the Celestari (a magical merfolk species hunted to supposed extinction for their magic by the rest of the universe), rescues Lyra, the human pirate princess, from drowning in the nebula when they are both children.

Years later, Lyra is poised to take the throne as Pirate Queen, and Vaelion is about to lead his people on a sacred pilgrimage. But when Vaelion discovers Lyra is not only his fated mate, but in grave danger from those who hunt her for a map she doesn't know she carries, he goes against his mother and the laws of his people to trade his tail and voice for legs so he can rescue her.

This story, told from both Lyra and Vaelion's POV, portrays the conflict of good and evil, both external and spiritual. Both characters struggle with making the right choices while unable to communicate due to Vaelion's muteness.

The absolute beauty of the Creator's grace, mercy, and love is displayed throughout both their stories, along with the redemptive theme of discovering they are enough, both for themselves and each other.

I loved the spiritual aspects of this story so very much. The romance is full of yearning and very swoon worthy. I am not usually one who tabs my books much, but this one is packed with so many amazing lines and quotes that I used more tabs on this story than on any other book I've read this far.

Favorite quotes:
"Holstering my blaster, I yanked my holopad off my belt, my thumb fumbling over the screen as I tried to run, drag my father toward the overlook, and press the right button to call Admiral Ivara all at the same time. I nearly choked when I almost misclicked and called Ivan - some dockrat from Tatarine I dated for all of a few months in my twenties - instead.
Why was he even still in my holopad?" 😂

"I swallowed hard, not sure what to pray next. I needed help, but I wasn't sure just what sort of help I needed. But He knew.
"He always did "

"Seeing Lyra wrapped in the fabric I had worn surrounded by my scent even if she couldn't consciously recognize it, made something primitive and satisfied rumble through the bond.
Mine."

"Because death is inevitable, Lyra. But it is only goodbye for a little while. Never forever. Not for those who are mine."

This book was so good! It was inspiring, and beautiful. And it tugged at my heart strings in the best way possible. It was a pure blessing to read. ♥

First of all, give me anything that is Little Mermaid themed. I gobble it up. Put the characters in a fantasy version of outer space? Take my money!

Second, a huge reason I wanted to read this book is because it has strong, Christian themes that are front and center. Its the kind of book I’ve been craving for so long and struggling to find because the book market is … saturated with strong romantic content. I say this with a lot of love for my fellow romance readers.

I binge-read this book in a single day. I might have started it a week before, but the day that I opened it to “sit and read for a while” went by in a blur. I couldn’t put it down.

I know we all tend to think that every book is perfection. And then there are times when we think “the perfect book doesn’t exist.” Well, Stardust & Silence is perfection. Portable magic.

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” ~ Stephen King

I highly recommend it, even if you don’t read Christian stories. And I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone who hasn’t read it yet. So I will just say this: This book resonated with my soul. Not only is it the perfect book to read on Starbright (Christmas!) but it is also the perfect romance.

Okay, one spoiler:

That’s why I love this book.

Ashley Willingham is truly blessed by God in her writing. And yes, it totally delivers on the Little Mermaid meets Treasure Planet, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Actually, I want to go back and rewatch both of those movies now! Also, the author market’s this book (and other books in the standalone series) as Clean Fairytales for Adults. As an adult, I understand why she is clear on that detail. She wants to give adult readers that same joy that comes to lovers of YA romance, but with mature characters.

I’ll be giving it a re-read in the coming months.

What do you get when you combine Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and The Little Mermaid? This book! I can almost guarantee you will have the soundtracks for those movies playing in your head as you read. Ashley Willingham does an amazing job (as usual) with her world building. Everything is meticulously set up: Species, technology, geography. This is a stand-alone story, but if you enjoy it, you should check out her other fairytales: “Dreams and Dragon Wings” and “Smoke and Glass Slippers.” I am reviewing this one because it is my favorite. In this book, the chapters switch between the two main characters, so you get to hear what is going on in their heads. That is a good thing, since one of the characters can’t talk. (Hence the title) It is a tad mushy at times, but what do you expect? Also, if you watched Treasure Planet...remember the cat alien? Yeah, there’s some of those in here.

Violence: Battles/skirmishes. Almost everyone carries (and uses) blasters or another sort of weapon. There’s a hive of scum and villainy. Epic chase scene!

Romance: Most certainly. Like I said before, mushy at times.

Scarry themes: There’s a Witch-king. And scheming politicians. And the death of a loved one. And a couple minor characters turn to the Dark Side.

This book was very interesting in that it was a conundrum. The characters were complex but also didn't go through any character development. The characters at the end of the book are identical to the ones at the beginning of the book. At the same time, the worldbuilding is simultaneously interesting and vague. The idea of space pirates is fascinating, but this book never explains why they are pirates or who they are pirating. The only government we see in the book is the PIRATE government, and we don't meet or mention anyone who isn't a pirate. Also, there's this weird thing where the characters ARE affected by gravity (since at one point, the fake gravity is turned off), but they don't need oxygen? Also also, the idea of space mermaids is cool, but again underdeveloped. They can only swim in "nebulas", not space in general?
I didn't dislike that the book is Christian, because I am too. What I didn't like is that the characters are incapable of doing ANYTHING without praying about it first. There's also a GIANT character change of heart which is completely unmotivated other than the author said so, and I think the two issues are related.

The premise of the book was great, but the delivery was mid.

Once You’re Hooked, You’re Hooked!!!

I have been reading this entire series and each book feels better than the last. I love the elements of faith, the sweet romances and the absurd (in a good way) worlds that Ashley builds in her books. I don’t know how her brain does it but I am a little obsessed. I devoured this book in about 24 hours. I couldn’t put it down.

My only drawback with the book was the moral
Implications of pillagers and people who make deals with darkness. I think by the end of the book she addresses it beautifully but I was a little put off by it at first.

All in all, it was a riveting read and I can’t wait for the next one.

I really enjoyed this novel. It personally was a nice break for me from all the other types of spicy Romantasy novels.

The characters felt genuine, and the emotions weren’t rushed or tied up in a neat bow, which I appreciated. This isn’t a fast-paced plot-heavy book, but if you enjoy character-driven stories with beautiful writing and emotional depth, this one really delivers.

I did love one quote in the book ,”Because death is inevitable, Lyra. But it is only goodbye for a little while. Never forever. Not for those who are mine.” - this quote shook me because I myself have lost a parent and loved that I could feel the questioning and everything from the MC.

I didn’t know I needed this book until I read it. The message is so sweet and the Christian morals just make the whole book feel good as you read it. The adventure is exciting and it left me on the edge of my seat (or bed) every second. I will say it was really strange for me (a teen) to be reading a love story where the characters are in their 30’s but I just kept gaslighting myself that they were younger than that lol. But otherwise good read that I’ll be recommending to adults and teens alike because it’s just that enjoyable 🥰

Great Book!

A great read! I love every book I have read by this author. This book has strong themes of redemption and faith. The book talks of hard decisions that have to be made and being torn between two difficult choices. Following the creator's path is a strong theme.

The worldbuilding in this book is easy to follow. It is loosely based off The Little Mermaid but in space. I thought it sounded weird at first but it works really well! I really enjoyed the world that was created, it was fascinating and I enjoyed envisioning it.

The FMC and MMC were very well written, and the book is dual POV from both of them. I loved the progression of each character arc and relationship. I loved the bond they shared.

This book is a standalone and I definitely recommend it!

😍😍😍

This was lovely. As soon as I saw one of the authors posts about this book I got it and I finished this in a day.

I don’t read romantasy often—nothing against it I just don’t—but this was delightful. The imagery and descriptions were beautiful and I love how our Vaelion was always there to protect and comfort Lyra while respecting her boundaries and understanding that to her he a complete stranger.

I don’t review often but this was so worth it. Definitely recommend.

*5/5 Stars

I didn’t want to read the last chapter and I literally put it off for a couple of days because I did NOT want this book to end. But of course, all good things must come to an end.
Some days I scroll through book lists, looking for books that capture my attention. Unique books. Some days I find nothing and other days I find gems like this book just waiting to be read. A beautiful book, this one.

This might be my favorite one of Willingham's fairytale retelling yet. Little Mermaid set in space, learning how to forgive, recognizing that love can both destroy and put us back together again.

I would love more stories in this little world that Willingham has created. This book felt much shorter than it was, but it's so beautiful.

Wow. Just... wow. I didn't know I could love this more than I did Dreams and Dragon Wings... but it's my new favorite from Ashley Willingham. This story, this journey, really touched me in so many ways. The adventure that she takes you on, connecting with these characters and their struggles and strengths, is worth every page. I wish I could read this again for the first time.

I was unsure about a fairytale retelling set in space, but Ashley Willingham pulled it off! I really enjoyed this little mermaid gender flipped story. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of fairytales, swoony romance, and high stakes adventure!

this was one of the best stories or retelling I have ever read. the on page prayer. The together prayer to see where tehy go forward was the best. little mermaid meets hook. I loved this so so so much.

everything I never knew I needed!

This book absolutely trapped me in a reading daze for an entire day (which is how long it took me to finish it haha). It was so so good!
