Darker than dark and delightfully twisted, Darker Days came in like a lamb and left like a wrecking ball with a mission. Starting off somewhat slow as the background was established, I both fell in love and was repelled by the long cast of characters. Composed of a few that I liked and a ton I absolutely loved to hate, I was beyond intrigued as I tried to figure out where this unguessable plot was ultimately going. After all, underneath all of the spine-chilling moral quandaries was a premise that made me really think. From the idea of a Faustian deal with the Devil to the exploration of right vs wrong, the Shirley Jackson-meets-Stephen King vibe was alive and kicking in this mind-blowing tale of supernatural horror.
Permeated with an ominous atmosphere and a constantly ratcheting—and haunting—sense of unease, I have to admit that I was floored by how much I ended up loved this novel. You see, as a newbie to horror, it was like throwing me into the deep end and asking me to swim. Despite that, however, the deliciously unhinged scenes and thoroughly despicable characters made me want to cheer as events got darker with each and every page. That being said, please be sure to check my content warning if you are triggered by anything at all. Between suicide, gun violence, and a whole host of -isms, the long list of serious topics—while disturbing—only made the book feel more realistic and hard-hitting.
All said and done, thanks to the well-drawn multiple POVs and eerily sinister setting, this book was a hole in one for this avid reader. With a cinematic feel that makes me desperately hope that someone like M. Night Shyamalan will come along and make it into a movie, the evocative prose and eye-popping descriptions had me reading it with the lights on. Sure to be nightmare-inducing, it brought to mind every great horror film ever made. Not so much due to any of the events, but instead because of the thought-provoking ethical dilemmas that are sure to live rent-free in my head. And that was before I even got to the ending, which wasn’t just sublime—it was a pure *mic drop* kind of move. Rating of 4.5 stars (upgraded).

Nice and spooky, this one, plus it shows clearly how there’s always a catch.
Bird Street in Lock Haven, Washington is a singular place. All of its residents have an enormous amount of luck and all the children are crazy talented. That doesn’t come for free, though and each November those on Bird Street go through the “Darker Days” where things are bad and all the mirrors in the houses must be hidden away lest they see what has given them their good fortune.
I really liked this book, especially the end. The only thing I didn’t love was that a major plot point didn’t seem to fit - even the characters see this. This lessened my overall enjoyment of it and cost it a star. Otherwise, really nice horror throughout. Perfect for spooky season!

Darker Days is what I call an absolute MASTERPIECE! Downright BRILLIANT! It’s already had the rights sold for television! As I was reading it, I could so see it on the screen.
Have you ever made a deal with the devil? At least thought about it? There’s a nice little neighborhood in Lock Haven. The good old people on Bird Street. Eleven months of the year, everyone has good luck. Everyone is successful, even the kids. But once November arrives, it all goes to hell. Terror strikes and evil matters must be paid as debt.
This book is all kinds of messed up and it was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD GOOD! It’s my favorite horror to date! It’s going to be tough to beat it. The last 30% I was holding my breath, saying Oh My Gawd over n over and couldn’t get through it fast enough.
Fair warning, this book is deliciously DARK. Dark dark! Suicide is a big trigger warning. If that doesn’t bother you, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! A complete MASTERPIECE! This story will live rent free in my head forever!

2025's answer to Pet Sematary.
The residents of Bird Street, New Haven lived a charmed life. They are relatively well off, have extraordinary luck compared to the general population but at what cost do all theses benefits come at?
A superb horror. Which is a perfect read for autumn and winter, what with the oncoming of darker days and longer nights.
This isn't your usual good verses evil, its more a case of exploring our motivations and what horrors we would go to to live out our dreams.
Spectacularly written from start to finish. With a well paced narrative and tonnes of full bodied characters to love or hate. This is one of those books that builds up an atmosphere of palpable tension which will permeate into your being.
Honestly, I spent many nights feeling the sheer dread still corsing within me after my evening reading session.
This book will make you scream and cry in equal measures. What else would you want in a book?

What if you could have 11 months out of the year where you live your most fabulous life possible only then to have one month of pure hell? The neighbors on Bird St. in a small Washington town can tell you all about it.
Darker Days introduces us to the neighbors on Bird Street specifically from the point of view of the Lewis-da-Silva family. Both parents are well off with very good jobs and both children are prodigies in music and athletics. As they prepare for this year‘s dark days, the usual ritual does not go off as planned. Things start spiraling out of control and all hell begins to break loose.
The first chapter definitely set the bar up high for the rest of the novel. Things never let up until the final page. I always enjoy a novel that mixes the supernatural with real life horrors and this did not disappoint.
This is the first novel I’ve read by this author and I’m looking forward to picking his previous novels. This is definitely an author to be on the lookout for.

Welkom in Bird Street, een straat in Lock Haven, Washington. Als je door deze straat zou lopen, zou je zien dat het alle bewoners voor de wind gaat. De huizen zijn gigantisch en iedereen lijkt gelukkig te zijn. De mensen hebben succes, een goede carrière en ze doen allemaal de dingen die ze altijd hebben willen doen. Ook zijn ze allemaal gezond, zowel fysiek, mentaal én spiritueel. En hoe zit het met hun kinderen? Nou, die zijn allemaal perfect en hebben zo hun eigen talenten. Het lijkt bijna alsof het allemaal iets te goed gaat, toch?
November is namelijk de maand waar iedereen in Bird Street tegenop ziet. In november breken namelijk de Donkere Dagen aan en slaat het geluk om in ongeluk. Luana en Ralph weten het, net zoals hun kinderen Kaila en Django. In november voelen ze de pijntjes, zijn er financiële problemen en de domme pech. Er zijn periodes van ziekte, mentale verwarring en depressie. Er valt niet veel aan te doen dan de Donkere Dagen uitzitten en na vier weken gaat het meestal weer de goede kant op. Het geluk keert weer terug, maar wel tegen een prijs…
In November zitten behoorlijk wat heftige scenes. Zo wordt er openlijk gesproken over depressie, suïcide en bipolaire stoornis. Het verhaal wordt langzaam opgebouwd en heel erg eng wordt het niet, maar toch is dit boek geweldig! De sfeer die je de hele tijd voelt is echt ZO goed. Thomas weet de personages, omgeving en gebeurtenissen prima op papier te zetten.
Telkens als ik het boek even opzij legde, wilde ik toch meteen weer verder lezen, want iets aan dit boek trok mij enorm aan. Het is niet zozeer de onderhuidse spanning die je regelmatig voelt, maar meer ook de psychische elementen die zich onderling afspelen.
Zoals jullie misschien al merken ben ik razend enthousiast over November. Dit komt natuurlijk mede door de fantastische schrijfstijl van Thomas. Invloeden van Stephen King zijn duidelijk zichtbaar en ik raad je dit boek dan ook zeker aan als je van deze stijl houdt!
Ik kan niet teveel verraden over dit boek, maar dit verhaal zal mij lang bijblijven.

Ik volgde de Instagram live van deze auteur en hoorde hem zeggen dat dit zijn beste boek so far is en daar is geen woord van gelogen. Wat een boek! Wat een lees! Ik las het boek enkele dagen geleden uit, ik had het trouwens zo uit want ik liet mijn slaap ervoor (alsof iemand een goede nachtrust heeft tijdens het lezen van Olde Heuvelts boeken) en ben nog steeds diep verdoken in het verhaal, het is zo sterk, zit psychologisch zo goed in elkaar en is zó een mindfuck. Oef. Wat een verhaal.
Ik weet niet waar te beginnen. Vertel ik hoe fijn die verwijzingen naar vorige boeken zijn? Vertel ik hoe geniaal dit gehele verhaal is? Vertel ik hoe sommige hoofdstukken zo heftig en intens waren dat ik het boek amper kon openhouden? Want als ik het niet las dan is het er niet en laat dát nu juist de kracht van deze auteur zijn, want ik ben helemaal niet zeker of het er allemaal niet was of is.
De auteur deelt het verhaal op in twee delen. In het tweede deel voelt alles wat rustiger aan - nou ja, wat is rustiger hè - maar dat zorgt dan weer dat je als lezer meer gaat nadenken en zit je zelf al zo in die mindfuck dat ook hier elk hoofdstuk intens is.
De schrijfstijl van Thomas Olde Heuvelt, dat is toch best uniek. Zelf ben ik niet echt fan van horror, ik las nog maar een boek van Stephen King en dat was hem niet voor mij. Ik weet bijna zeker dat Thomas de enige auteur is die met zijn unieke schrijfstijl - de manier waarop hij het verhaal brengt, de elementen en thema’s die zijn boek bevatten en noem maar op, mij kan bekoren. Dat evenwicht dat hij zo meesterlijk hanteert, goud.

Thomas Olde Heuvelt has been an author to-watch for me ever since reading his horror smash Hex. I loved the uniqueness of the story and the way it evolved into something much bigger (also loved the nod to it in this book!). I loved the messaging and the powerful metaphorical themes in Echo, which was a cruel and brutal romance at its core. I knew that once DARKER DAYS (called November in Europe) was coming stateside, that I was going to pick it up!
In DARKER DAYS, we are given a massive cast list (thankfully a key is in the beginning that I used multiple times throughout reading) with a neighborhood darker than I ever expected. In Lock Haven, Washington, the wealthy residents of Bird Street live in blissful perfection until November brings the cursed “Darker Days,” when a debt must be paid with sacrifice. The families compromise one month of terror and darkness for 11 months of success, beauty, power, and opportunity that they may not have had if they didn't participate in the Darker Days. However, what would happen if the families' ritual goes wrong?
This book was dark and very intriguing. The set up takes a bit longer than you may expect, but once you get about 20% into the story, you are ready for action. Many of these characters are love-to-hate vibes (there's one kid I truly despised and you'll see why), but it doesn't take away from the story, but in fact makes it more realistic about the darkness within some of these people. If you liked The Fall of the House of Usher, then this book would definitely work well with you. I think this book is on par with my feelings for the author's previous books that I've read. The ending is very satisfying, but a lot of darkness also comes along the way. Thomas Olde Heuvelt continues to provide unique horror stories that entertain.

Goed en leuk boek, alleen iets te veel fantasy voor mijn smaak. Ik wist van te voren niet dat het ook een fantasy boek was, daardoor had ik er een andere verwachting van. Maar ik heb alsnog erg genoten van dit verhaal!

Darker Days is a modern take on a Faustian pact tale. For the group of families that live on Bird Street, in the state of Washington, 11 months of the year they live very lucky, prosperous lives but when November comes around it all changes. During the Darker Days of November the devil comes out and wants payment.
I am a huge fan of Thomas Olde Huevelt but was a bit let down with his previous novel Oracle. I found it very scattered and had a hard time keeping up with the storyline. Darker Days was return to his horror story writing, more similar to Hex and Echo.
The plot is straightforward and eerie, the characters are engaging, and a few scenes will haunt your mind. A warning should be given to those sensitive to suicide and suicidal thought. I gave this 5 stars putting it in the top 5 releases of this year for me.
I am a huge fan of Thomas Olde Huevelt but was a bit let down with his previous novel Oracle. I found it very scattered and had a hard time keeping up with the storyline. Darker Days was return to his horror story writing, more similar to Hex and Echo.
The plot is straightforward and eerie, the characters are engaging, and a few scenes will haunt your mind. A warning should be given to those sensitive to suicide and suicidal thought. I gave this 5 stars putting it in the top 5 releases of this year for me.

5 stars. This book is a masterpiece of horror fiction that explores deep issues of human morality and making stark choices. Its a book ideal for November time. Hits hard this one. It wrestles with mental illness which may be a trigger for some people. All in all a dark book.

Ja, wenn man etwas total spannendes und gruseliges erwartet hat, in diesen 60 Seiten aber ausschließlich tausend Namen fallen, die man nicht auseinanderhalten kann, und das Geschehen so unglaublich langweilig geschrieben ist, dass man sich zum Lesen zwingen muss. Und sich diese 60 Seiten schon wie 600 anfühlen.
Falls es noch spannend und gruselig und genau das, was ich mir erhofft habe, wird, werde ich es nicht mitbekommen. So lange halte ich einfach nicht durch.

November is een donker boek. De kaft is donker, de inhoud is donker. Typisch iets voor de donkere dagen.
Het boek bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste deel is ijzersterk. Thema's als depressie, bipolaire stoornissen, zelfmoord, euthanasie, schuldgevoel komen allemaal voorbij. Ik was even bang dat deze thema's oppervlakkig zouden worden gebruikt om het boek een zweem van diepgang te geven, maar dat was totaal niet het geval. Olde Heuvelt is erg authentiek. Of hij heeft ervaring in zijn directe omgeving of hij heeft zich erg goed ingelezen/voor laten lichten, petje af.
Dat maakt het dus ook gelijk een zwaar boek en de horror zit niet zozeer in de schrikmomenten, maar in de depressie.
Het tweede deel is onevenwichtiger, je hebt het gevoel dat de auteur wat shortcuts neemt om tot zijn slotacte te komen. Het was hink-stap-sprong naar de laatste 20% van het boek toe.
Het slot vond ik wel goed, niet geweldig, maar ik vond het wel een passende afsluiting.
Door de onevenwichtigheid in dit boek is dit voor mij geen 5 sterren, maar wel zeker een aanrader.

The residents of Bird Street made a pact with the Devil. He offered them happiness if they in turn provide him with a human sacrifice once a year. The book's title points to the one caveat that surrounds the fateful clause. During the month of November they are all fully deprived of their luck, until the Accountant (as they call the manifested presence of evil) gets his victim. When things could go bad, they will go bad.
You cannot talk of Thomas Olde Heuvelt without mentioning Stephen King, and I won't attempt to free myself from forces stronger than what one insignificant "book critic" could overcome. What Heuvelt does equally well is characterization. The horrors creep up from within as our tragic protagonists are no longer capable to suppress their inner demons.
As the month goes on their situation is getting particularly dire. Mental and physical illness haunts them as maybe it would have under more normal circumstances. What I loved about the story was how vividly the characters reacted to their fates. Sometimes we do things and afterwards think that we were lucky and that things might have turned out much worse. In November they learn (again) that things can go bad and that then you have to take responsibility for your mistakes (i.e., for your bad actions whose bad consequences were not somehow avoided). Before acceptance they are in the familiar circle of when you ask yourself, Why did you do it? I don't know. I really don't know.
There are individuals that in November feel the full force of their guilt. There is one man who resorts to alcohol to drown his conscience. His daughter suffers from a bipolar disorder that makes her lose control over the person she wants to be. I think in these moments the author expresses genuine empathy for human weakness (I think I said something similar on The Poppy War?). It's not simply a fault of character (an ethical fault, so to say); weakness may result from the external pressure getting too much. It's for this reason that the more fortunate have it easier to succeed morally, too.
At least superficially, There is an obvious metaphor here, one that the story itself calls out at one point. Isn't many people's happiness made possible by the suffering of others? Isn't yours, at least to some degree? From this angle happiness is presented as the ability to overcome guilt. Moreover, when something bad happens (like an unfortunate medical diagnosis, say) won't you think that you deserved better? I highly enjoyed these moral undertones, especially since the story never gets unduly preachy.
Another interesting aspect of the plot was how the children are introduced as the product of their parents' good fortune. They are unusually gifted and especially the boy's interest in very early jazz was a cool touch. Actually, their subplot too were somewhat rooted in tradition. The children's exploration of the forbidden woods reads less as Stranger Things adventures than as mythical fairy tales.
Naturally, the first couple of chapters the cultists' intrigues are clouded in mystery. Admittedly, it's not the most engaging kind of opening and mostly serves as cover-up for some holes in the premise. But at the end of Part One it culminates in a climax that thoroughly shook me up. The way they exploit the teenager's struggle with severe depression and his suicidal spiral was incredibly sinister and shameless.
November is the kind of horror whose supernatural premise is mostly pretense. If you are not negatively triggered by how the story tackles themes of psychological and ethical significance, then the depths greatly add to the overall atmosphere and round up a fully convincing tale of horror.

Ondanks dat ik er moeilijk doorheen kwam was de plottwist toch echt wel de moeite waard. Niet zijn beste boek.

De prachtige cover van November trok me meteen aan. Dit is weliswaar het eerste boek dat ik heb gelezen van deze auteur en ik vond het best spannend omdat het verhaal buiten mijn comfortzone ligt. Toch wou ik dit boek graag lezen aangezien de korte inhoud me intrigeerde en gezien alle positieve reacties die ik al las over eerdere boeken.
Wat een schrijver is deze man! De schrijfstijl doet heel filmisch aan. Je kan de beelden helemaal voor je zien. Ik las nog niet zoveel van Stephen King maar volgens wat ik wel al las zou je deze auteurs zeker aan elkaar kunnen meten.
Het verhaal zelf start met een scene die je meteen in het verhaal trekt en de toon aangeeft voor de rest van het boek. Spannend en duister en onvoorspelbaar.
Het is zeker een boek waar je de tijd moet voor nemen. Wisselende perspectieven, zowel van personages als in de tijd en lange hoofdstukken, maken dat je niet even ‘snel tussen andere activiteiten door’ het boek oppakt. Ik heb er best wel lang over gedaan. Het verhaal pakte me maar moeilijk, omdat het niet echt mijn ding is enerzijds, anderzijds omdat ik soms de verhaallijn niet helemaal kon vatten.
De thema’s waren best heftig te noemen. Eerder heftig dan spannend. Na de veelbelovende start miste ik later in het boek wat de spanning die in het begin goed naar voor kwam.
Soms gaat gedurende het verhaal voor mij de vaart er wel uit door het heel gedetailleerde beschrijven. Dit is dubbel natuurlijk want juist dit maakt het verhaal geloofwaardig en realistisch. De sfeer wordt enorm goed weergegeven. Je wordt ondergedompeld in de Donkere Dagen.
Hoewel ik niet zo vaak een boek als dit zou openslaan, ben ik positief verrast door deze auteur! Het genre ligt misschien niet echt in de lijn van verhalen die ik zou kiezen maar de schrijfstijl is echt een kunst die hij beheerst. Als je dus wél een liefhebber bent van dit genre dan is dit volgens mij zeker een aanrader.

Periodes van ziekte, mentale verwarring en depressie. Meestal niets onoverkomelijks, maar de Donkerder Dagen kunnen ze elk jaar maar beter uitzitten. Na een week of vier is het voorbij en keert het geluk terug... maar wel tegen een prijs.

ik vond dit boek wel oké, een beetje langdradig in het begin, en redelijk voorspelbaar. het had van mij ook nog wel iets enger gemogen, maar alsnog heb ik me goed vermaakt met november.

Erg bloedstollend en meeslepend boek! Olde Heuvelt weet de spanning van het boek supergoed op te bouwen. Naast een spannend verhaal zit er bovendien veel ethiek in het boek verstopt: hoeveel heb je over voor geluk?

This was an incredible read - with some caveats! It's a brilliant story of supernatural horror, building on the classical horror trope of the Faustian bargain, though with a twist: you sign away your soul to the Devil (or to the entity acting like the Devil!), in exchange for happiness guaranteed throughout the year, except for November! The month of November is the month of the titular "Darker Days," when bad luck dominates and things slowly revert to the life you should have had without the bargain! And unless you offer a sacrifice in that month, a living soul dying in a specific place designated by the entity which has gifted you and your family with health, financial and marital success (as well as an abundance of innate talents), you better forget getting your happiness back - it's permanent bad luck for the remaining years of your life.
The place is a neighborhood in Lock Haven, Washington. The residents (four families) have sold their souls to the Accountant (admittedly, a better name than "The Devil") in exchange for children (if infertility was the problem), sobriety (overcoming alcoholism), health (after life-altering injuries or a fatal prognosis), and a will to live (if severe tendencies to unalive oneself were the cause of distress). They live in wealth and prosperity, their children talented and top achievers, they themselves happy, contented parents, and personally fulfilled. And then there comes November. The book covers a whole year, from one November to the next, spending a little more than half on the former, presenting in the bleakest of ways what the cost of not paying your due amounts to, and what exactly actually paying it entails (people to sacrifice are not found just around the corner!). It's as harrowing as it sounds, and it culminates in an awful scene, bound to trigger a lot of people. The rest of the book provides a quick overview of December till next October, when the time comes for the debt to be paid all over again. But this time, the families haven't taken into account what it means to have teenage children among them. Teenagers are notoriously nosy (when they're even bothered), and do not respond to orders and secrets very well (if at all). What follows is, well, dark, lacking even the slightest humor, and occasionally terrifying for everyone involved.
The book is looong. It's almost one family's story, presented in painstaking detail. It's also filled with deeply flawed characters, some of them quite nasty, though none of them a simple stereotype. I confess, however, that I didn't like anyone. And the book is also very bleak, as people try to secure their happiness, and failing that they become desperate and act out rashly and recklessly. On the other hand, I was often creeped out by the slow burn plot and the suspenseful development of certain situations revolving around a couple of characters, specifically a father and his daughter. The cast is large, everybody's story very complex, and the book thrives on strong characterization and engrossing dialogue. The situations depicted are quite ordinary (no SA or CA, for example), but psychologically extremely heavy and twisted (the focus does fall very often on depression, unaliving oneself and euthanasia). The ending, a punchline ending if there ever was one, was absolutely satisfying, even if a bit rushed for my taste.
Olde Heuvelt manages to deliver a densely plotted story on the basis of a rather simple premise, filled with terrifically fleshed out characters: everything feels real, the atmosphere is reminiscent of psychological thrillers, and the devilish entity itself has been imagined in interesting detail, giving strong Slenderman or urban legend vibes rather than religious or Christian ones.
If you enjoy long books with a large cast, interesting backstories, and many twists in the plot, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended!

November is een maand vol donkere dagen. Niet alleen omdat de dagen korter worden, maar ook omdat Thomas Olde Heuvelt november bij uitstek geschikt vond voor een nieuw creepy verhaal.
In ‘November‘ maken we kennis met een straat vol buurbewoners die het geluk aan hun zijde hebben. En ook hun kinderen zijn fantastisch. Maar geluk heeft een keerzijde, en deze keerzijde komt elk jaar met het begin van november. Een menselijk offer is namelijk nodig om de overige elf maanden volkomen gelukzalig te kunnen leven.
Maar wat als je morele en ethische kompas van slag raakt? Wat heb je dan over voor het geluk?
Een jaar lang keek ik uit naar het nieuwste boek van Thomas. En wat klonk die achterflap tekst toch spannend en interessant. Wie wil er nu geen geluk in het leven? En dat ene offer? Ach, als dat er voor nodig is? Of toch niet?
Als liefhebber van horror en thrillers heb ik al zoveel verschillende verhalen gelezen met de meest uiteenlopende gruwelijke en verschrikkelijke gebeurtenissen. Ik kan vastberaden zeggen dat ik een hoop kan hebben. Toch ben ik in eerste instantie na dertien pagina’s gestopt met lezen van ‘November‘.
Niet omdat ik bang werd, of omdat het spannend was, maar omdat ik voor het eerst echt werd geconfronteerd met één van mijn triggers. En zonder trigger waarschuwing vooraf, viel deze nogal rauw op mijn dak.
Wanneer iemand sterft aan een ziekte waar je zelf ternauwernood aan bent ontsnapt, gaat dat je niet in de koude kleren zitten.
Alhoewel ik mij ervan bewust ben dat het geen doen is om ieder boek te voorzien van alle mogelijke triggers die er voor lezers kunnen zijn, had ik gezien de rest van het verhaal, het bij dit boek wel passend gevonden. Want er zitten namelijk nogal wat triggers in.
‘November‘ draait om Bird Street in Lock Haven en haar bewoners, maar vooral draait het om de familie Lewis da Silva. Bestaande uit Ralph, Luana, Kaila en Django.
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit hun perspectieven. Niet alleen maken we dus kennis met hen als gezin, maar ook met ieder individueel. We leren meer over de donkere dagen en welke achtergrond hierbij een belangrijke rol speelt.
Toen ik eenmaal zover was dat ik verder kon lezen (na wat lieve woorden van Thomas zelf, heel erg bedankt daarvoor), merkte ik dat ik met moeite in het verhaal kwam.
Thomas heeft absoluut een griezelige atmosfeer weten te creëren met de setting, maar door al vrij snel met wat belangrijke achtergrond informatie te komen, viel de spanning voor mij daarna vrij snel weg. En persoonlijk heb ik wat de rode draad betreft geen opbouw aan spanning meer terug gezien.
Wel zien we rondom de personages spanning terug, en dit waren voor mij de momentjes die maakten dat ik wilde lezen hoe het met hen zou aflopen.
Ik ben absoluut fan van de schrijfstijl van Thomas. Ook in dit boek schrijft hij heerlijk beeldend en kost het je geen moeite om gebeurtenissen en omgevingen voor je te zien. Daarnaast vind ik het absoluut fijn dat hij het uitschrijven van gruwelijke details niet schuwt. Dat maakt toch dat ik steeds weer uitkijk naar zijn verhalen.
Ik merkte wel dat ik halverwege het verhaal de richting een beetje kwijt raakte. Gaat dit verhaal nu over de personages? Over de straat? Over het duistere bos? Het voelde voor mij alsof Thomas alles in één wilde stoppen, maar daardoor de focus verloor.
Wat mij betreft was het teveel van alles niet bevorderlijk voor het verhaal. Ik miste een richting, gebeurtenissen kwamen niet altijd realistisch/logisch over en het wegvallen van de spanning zorgde ervoor dat ik mijzelf moest pushen om door te lezen.
Er gebeurt namelijk ook erg weinig voor mijn gevoel in de eerste helft. Pas tegen het einde van dit boek, krijgen we meer spanning, een soort van onverwachte wending, wat meer actie, die maken dat het wat vlotter wegleest.
Met regelmaat had ik het gevoel dat ik een boek van Stephen King aan het lezen was, met een beetje een mix tussen ‘The mist‘ en ‘The Shining‘.
Het einde was weliswaar verrassend, maar wat mij betreft alles behalve bevredigend. Te veel open vragen en losse eindjes.
Omdat ik weet hoe belangrijk trigger warnings kunnen zijn voor mensen, wilde ik ze absoluut benoemen in mijn recensie.
De grootste triggers zijn moord, kanker, zelfmoord en euthanasie. Dit verhaal draaide zo ontzettend om suïcide, dat het behalve heftig ook vervelend werd. Voor mij althans.
Omdat Thomas in zijn nawoord meer uitleg geeft over het hoe en waarom, begrijp ik nu waarom hij deze keuzes heeft gemaakt. Maar persoonlijk had ik dit als voorwoord willen lezen.
Personages
Vier belangrijke personages in dit boek.
Laat ik meteen zeggen dat ik qua personages het één en ander vond ontbreken aan uitwerking. Ja, we krijgen van Luana en Ralph wat mee aan geschiedenis, maar ik vond dat een aantal belangrijke aspecten uit hun verleden nader toegelicht hadden mogen worden.
Zowel Django als Kaila vond ik intens. Beide vond ik het best uitgewerkt.
Te beginnen met Django, Thomas heeft zich heel erg kunnen inleven in zijn personage. Django is een tiener en dit komt goed en realistisch over. Zijn gedachtegang was niet altijd even logisch en zijn fascinatie voor de nazi’s vond ik hier en daar bizar. Ik heb mij wel afgevraagd wat hiervan de toegevoegde waarde was voor het verhaal.
Toch lijkt hij zeker in het eerste deel van het boek een belangrijke rol te hebben. Ik had hem graag in een net zo belangrijke rol terug willen zien in het laatste deel, maar deze was weggelegd voor Kayla.
Als lezer, had ik het gevoel dat Thomas een persoonlijke connectie had met Kaila. Thomas heeft heel veel tijd en aandacht aan haar besteedt en haar wat mij betreft ontzettend goed uitgewerkt.
Kaila heeft een bipolaire stoornis en haar manie en depressieve periodes wisselen elkaar af met de komst van de donkere dagen. Zij was als personage intens. En wat mij betreft was zij de kracht in dit verhaal.
Misschien is zij ook wel de reden dat ik het einde niet bevredigend vond. Ze maakt namelijk een mooie ontwikkeling door, maar het einde liet mij achter met wat vragen.
Wat het meest opvalt aan de personages in dit verhaal, is dat het draait om gevoel, emotie en het daarnaar handelen. De struggles die zij hebben bij het offer dat ze ieder jaar moeten brengen kwamen goed over.
Thomas heeft hun menselijkheid zeker goed over weten te brengen. Het laat de lezer absoluut nadenken over de keuzes die je zelf zou hebben gemaakt als je in een vergelijkbare situatie terecht zou komen.
Mijn meest favoriete personage was de accountant. Hij was ontzettend fascinerend! En dat terwijl hij helemaal niet zo’n heel grote rol had gedurende het verhaal. Mijn behoefte om meer over hem te weten te komen was erg groot.
Conclusie
‘November‘ voelt voor mij niet “af”. Dat is het eerste dat mij te binnen schoot toen ik na elf dagen dit boek sloot.
Het verhaal en de bedoeling waren voor mij te vaag.
Wilde Thomas een spannende sfeer creëren? Of laten zien wat het maken van een bizarre keuze doet met de psyche van de mens? Of wilde hij toch misschien suïcide bespreekbaar maken?
Wat betreft de schrijfstijl van Thomas kan ik ook bij dit boek alleen maar positief zijn. Ondanks dat dit verhaal mij niet lag, is zijn schrijfstijl beeldend en fascinerend.
Het verhaal had hier en daar onlogische wendingen waardoor voor mij persoonlijk de spanning weg ebde en uiteindelijk ontbrak, tot het aan het einde weer een opleving kreeg.
Want ja, dat einde was best tof, al zijn er teveel onbeantwoorde vragen en hadden er dingen zeker iets beter uitgewerkt mogen worden.
In ‘November‘ miste ik de humor en de griezelige sfeer van ‘Hex‘, de bizarre en beklemmende setting die inwerkt op je zintuigen van ‘Echo‘ en de actie van ‘Orakel‘.
Het voelde alsof hij die aspecten allemaal in ‘November‘ heeft willen verwerken, maar de combinatie kwam wat mij betreft niet lekker samen in dit verhaal, waardoor het stuurloos aanvoelde.
Eigenlijk brak het mijn hart een beetje. Want ik had nooit gedacht dat ik op deze manier een recensie zou schrijven over een boek waar ik zo ontzettend naar uit keek.
Desalniettemin ben ik nu al benieuwd naar zijn volgende boek.
In ‘November‘ maken we kennis met een straat vol buurbewoners die het geluk aan hun zijde hebben. En ook hun kinderen zijn fantastisch. Maar geluk heeft een keerzijde, en deze keerzijde komt elk jaar met het begin van november. Een menselijk offer is namelijk nodig om de overige elf maanden volkomen gelukzalig te kunnen leven.
Maar wat als je morele en ethische kompas van slag raakt? Wat heb je dan over voor het geluk?
Een jaar lang keek ik uit naar het nieuwste boek van Thomas. En wat klonk die achterflap tekst toch spannend en interessant. Wie wil er nu geen geluk in het leven? En dat ene offer? Ach, als dat er voor nodig is? Of toch niet?
Als liefhebber van horror en thrillers heb ik al zoveel verschillende verhalen gelezen met de meest uiteenlopende gruwelijke en verschrikkelijke gebeurtenissen. Ik kan vastberaden zeggen dat ik een hoop kan hebben. Toch ben ik in eerste instantie na dertien pagina’s gestopt met lezen van ‘November‘.
Niet omdat ik bang werd, of omdat het spannend was, maar omdat ik voor het eerst echt werd geconfronteerd met één van mijn triggers. En zonder trigger waarschuwing vooraf, viel deze nogal rauw op mijn dak.
Wanneer iemand sterft aan een ziekte waar je zelf ternauwernood aan bent ontsnapt, gaat dat je niet in de koude kleren zitten.
Alhoewel ik mij ervan bewust ben dat het geen doen is om ieder boek te voorzien van alle mogelijke triggers die er voor lezers kunnen zijn, had ik gezien de rest van het verhaal, het bij dit boek wel passend gevonden. Want er zitten namelijk nogal wat triggers in.
‘November‘ draait om Bird Street in Lock Haven en haar bewoners, maar vooral draait het om de familie Lewis da Silva. Bestaande uit Ralph, Luana, Kaila en Django.

De horror 'November' sleept je mee in een wereld vol spanning en mysterie. Dit is het tweede boek wat ik lees van Thomas Olde Heuvelt en krijgt van mij vier sterren.
'November' speelt zich af in het dorp Lock Haven. In de straat Bird Street wonen gezinnen die alles mee hebben, ze zijn gezond, hebben goede carrières en doen allemaal precies wat ze willen. Tot dat het November wordt. Dan breekt het onheil uit, na vier weken is alles weer voorbij. Maar dit kan alleen tegen een grote prijs..
'November' is opgedeeld in twee delen. Het eerste deel gaat over de tijd rond november 2022 en deel twee over 2023. Het verhaal wordt goed opgebouwd, is spannend en heeft ook een psychologisch deel wat het een goede horror maakt. Het enige wat ik jammer vond is dat er lange Amerikaanse namen in het verhaal werden gebruikt. Het einde is verrassend en maakt het verhaal echt af.

I thought I was really going to love this book, but it moved at such a snail's pace that I made the decision to stop 50% in because I couldn't believe I was only 50% in and not much was progressing. I picked it back up today and listened to the rest via audiobook. It was just ok for me. A good book to read in October, but especially November. Wasn’t overly scary. Just creepy but verrrry slow.

Mein drittes Highlight-Buch von Thomas Olde Heuvelt, der mich immer mehr an den früheren Stephen King erinnert, als dieser sich noch getraut hat brutale Szenen auszuschreiben.
Und dabei ist "November" weit entfernt von Splatter-Horror, dennoch ist die Story nervenzerreißend, gruselig, stellenweise ziemlich explizit und einfach ein Psycho-Horror-Thriller-Roman der Extraklasse, der mich komplett überzeugt hat.
Was bin ich bereit zu tun, um mich und meine Familie zu schützen? Wie dehnbar ist mein moralischer Kompass? Wie schwer lastet Schuld auf der eigenen Seele und rechtfertigen elf Monate Glück die Opfer, die man dafür bringen muss?
Vom mir gibt’s ne absolute Leseempfehlung - sowohl für "November", als auch für "Hex" und "Echo" von Thomas Olde Heuvelt. Anders, besonders und eindrucksvoll.

Totaal niet mijn boek. Ik kom er niet doorheen. Ik was erg enthousiast na het lezen van de goede reviews, maar het valt me heel erg tegen.
Vlakke karakters met simpele doelen. Niet mijn ding.
