He thinks I’m off-limits. But rules were made to be broken.
I’m the perfect daughter—an heiress with a spotless reputation and a ring on my finger to prove it. But perfection is a fragile thing, and mine shatters the moment I meet Isaak. My bodyguard. Ex-military. Battle-scarred. All sharp edges and dark glances. He’s the last man I should want—older, all grit and danger, and everything my family would never approve of. Also, he hates me. He thinks I’m spoiled, entitled, a rich girl playing pretend. But there’s one thing he can’t The way his eyes darken when I walk into the room. The way his jaw clenches when another man gets too close. The way his touch—his bed—is the only place I feel safe. I'm engaged to a man my family has chosen for me. But my body betrays me whenever Isaak is near. I thought my stalker was my biggest problem. I was wrong. Because every time Isaak whispers my name, it feels like a promise.
Stasia was born in Georgia, grew up in Texas, recently spent a freezing five-year stint in Minnesota, and now is happily planted in sunny California, which she will never, ever leave.
She loves writing, reading, listening to podcasts, and has recently taken up biking after a twenty-year sabbatical (and has the bumps and bruises to prove it). She lives with her own personal cheerleader, aka, her handsome husband, and their teenage son. Wow. Typing that makes her feel old. And writing about herself in the third person makes her feel a little like a nutjob, but ahem! Where were we?
Stasia’s drawn to romantic stories that don’t take the easy way out. She wants to see beneath people’s veneer and poke into their dark places, their twisted motives, and their deepest desires. Basically, she wants to create characters that make readers alternately laugh, cry ugly tears, want to toss their kindles across the room, and then declare they have a new FBB (forever book boyfriend).
This was my first read by Stasia Black and I had so much fun! I can’t wait to get to more from her. 𝙍𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙑𝙤𝙬𝙨 is the third in her 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, but can definitely be read as a standalone. I don’t read enough bodyguard romances! I loved the dynamic between Kira and Isaak, and getting to know them. They are both complex characters with a lot of layers. The way Stasia established their emotional connection, as well as all of the chemistry and tension between them, was perfect. This story is filled with just the right amount of drama, and I loved the banter, suspense, side characters, and spiciness. Overall I enjoyed everything about it, it was fast paced and fun, I didn’t want to put it down!
🎧 The audio is performed in duet, and it’s incredible! If Sean Masters is listed as a narrator, there’s no doubt I’m listening. He is always so good, I can never get enough of his deep, gravelly voice. He was the perfect protective, alpha Isaak! This may have been my first time listening to Michelle Sparks, and I’m so happy to have been introduced to her! She was fabulous as Kira, her voice embodied the character and emotions perfectly, too! Ruined Vows has officially become one of my favorite bodyguard romances. This was my first book by Stasia Black, and I was impressed with how she tackled some important mental health issues.
Kira comes from a rich and controlling family. She hires Isaak to be her new bodyguard since her previous one reported everything she did to her mother, and she has a stalker. Isaak is ex-military, and he had a rough life growing up in foster care. They are definitely opposites and really clash in the beginning, but it doesn't take long for them to act on their attraction to each other. Unfortunately, Kira is being forced into a marriage by her family in order to get access to her inheritance. They are in an open relationship, so I didn't really consider it cheating when she started sleeping with Isaak. The more dangerous her stalker becomes, the closer Kira and Isaak become.
There was a lot of spice in this book, but Stasia Black did an amazing job also establishing an emotional connection between the characters. At first, I didn't like how fast they got together, but their relationship gets so much deeper throughout the book. I loved how they both helped each other with their trauma, especially how Kira worked with Isaak on his PTSD. It was a very emotional and moving scene.
🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧 This audiobook was duet narrated by Sean Masters and Michelle Sparks. They did such an amazing job bringing the banter and spice to life. Sean Masters was so passionate, and he brought so much to his performance. Michelle Sparks did a great job with Kira's feisty and independent nature. I would highly recommend the audio.
Thank you to Must Love Audio for providing the ALC.
The beginning of this jumped right into things, Isaak agreeing to be a personal protection officer, aka bodyguard lol, for Kira. The pair immediately argue and don't get along well, but there's definitely some chemistry there.
I liked the relationship between the MC's overall, though Isaak was easier to relate to. I have a harder time with people who are super young, but act like they're older than their peers. Girl, you are twenty two, accept it. I also thought it was pretty ridiculous that she was going through with a wedding just to get money. It made me less sympathetic to Kira when she could have found other ways to fund school.
The stalking plot was heavy at the beginning, then waned a lot, the heavy at the end. It was clear to me who the stalker was and I wished we had more things happening throughout the story.
A good amount of spice and I'm interested in the other club members at Carnal. Maybe the next book will have more?
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Hidden Gems and the author for the copy.
First book by this author, I enjoyed this. I adore a body guard trope, it’s got that good forbidden aspect to it. Our FMC is sassy and holds her own with this guys. Love love. I also really enjoyed the suspense element when it came to the stalker situation. There was just a little disconnect with the characters for me chemistry wise. Could have also been a lot shorter for me.
Narration by Michelle Sparks and Sean Masters was spot on. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a book narrated by them where their voice acting wasn’t amazing.
Thank you to Must Love Audio and the authors for the ALC!

Sean Masters and Michelle Sparks delivered an outstanding performance as Isaak and Kira. Stasia Black created an excellent story for these characters that consisted of angst, tension, banter, and suspense. Michelle and Sean brought these emotions to life, especially during the intense and spicy scenes. Speaking of spicy scenes, let’s just say Kira becomes adventurous, and Isaak assists her in ways beyond being her bodyguard, who is only supposed to protect her from her stalker. Oh, and did I mention that Kira is engaged during these escapades? 😏
Whether you prefer listening to the audiobook or reading the book yourself, prepare to be captivated by the events that unfold for Kira, Isaak, and her fiancé.
This novel captivated me from the very first page; I felt every moment of this story deeply. The author has done an exceptional job not only in crafting a compelling narrative but also in intricately capturing the perspectives and emotions of both main characters.
Kira, a university professor writing her dissertation on psychology within the kink community, has spent her life trapped in a metaphorical box created by her family and society. This story follows her powerful journey of self-discovery, all while facing a terrifying stalker situation. Enter Isaac, whom she hires through a friend as her protection officer. Isaac is no stranger to hardship himself, battling past demons and life experiences that have shaped him into the man he is today.
The author has skillfully captured these characters’ points of view and emotions. As someone who has encountered a stalker situation—though not as severe as Kira’s—I can attest to the authenticity of her feelings during that turbulent time. I have been immersed in military life and understand the realities of PTSD and the traumas stemming from service and combat. The level of depth in the characters suggests that the author possesses either firsthand experience, familiarity with such situations, or has conducted thorough research. It’s impressive! This meticulous attention to detail makes the storyline not only believable but also relatable to readers.
While this is the third installment in the Carnal series, it stands strong as a standalone. However, I strongly urge you not to skip the first two books. The author’s writing is extraordinary, her narratives are gripping, and the characters from earlier installments are woven into this one. Knowing their backgrounds enriched my reading experience.
The spice in this novel, as with all her works, is top-notch. The slow burn of the romance kept me engaged. The witty banter, combined with moments of comedy and tragedy, emotional struggles, intrigue, steamy scenes, and the compelling bodyguard/protector dynamic, solidify this book as a definitive five-star read for me.
Kira (h26) has spent her life trying to be perfect. For her family. For her image. For her fiancé. But when a stalker starts targeting her, perfection doesn’t matter anymore. She needs protection. What she gets is Isaak (H36), a combat-scarred bodyguard who doesn’t follow rules, doesn’t pretend, and doesn’t care about appearances.
She comes from privilege. He comes from survival. They don’t trust each other, but being forced into close quarters shifts everything. As the danger escalates, walls come down and something real begins to take shape.
Secrets unravel, and the threat becomes personal. Kira must choose between the life she was born into and the one she finally wants. Isaak will have to face the terrifying truth that love might be real, and he could lose it.
Kira starts tightly controlled and full of self-doubt, shaped by pressure and expectation. But fear, betrayal, and desire push her toward freedom. Isaak begins closed off and hardened by trauma, but through connection, he learns to open up. Together, they face what scares them most: being vulnerable and truly seen.
Their relationship isn't perfect. It begins with conflict and mistrust. What grows between them is raw, physical, hard-won, and deeply honest. It's not about being rescued. It's about choosing each other.
A steamy, dark, age gap, opposites attract, bodyguard, erotic, romantic suspense, with a side of kink, exploring trauma, survival, trust, power, control, obsession, identity, autonomy, healing, desire, family, betrayal, revenge, protection, transformation, choice, agency, love, redemption, and learning to stop performing and start living. It’s about finding safety in someone who doesn’t want to cage you, but stands beside you when it matters.
Really really enjoyed this book! I'm always a sucker for an age gap, one bed kind of romance and this hit all the right buttons for me. Isaak takes on a bodyguard position for Kira, who has a stalker and is working on her PhD while teaching. The two butt heads frequently at first, though both are quick to admit to themselves how attracted they are to each other. The biggest problem - besides her terrifying stalker - is she's engaged to be married to her childhood friend. Isaak & Kira grow close as he protects her and they both try to figure out who is terrorizing her. Lots of very fun spicy scenes ensue, along with the two of them helping each other overcome trauma in their lives. The mystery of her stalker and the connection between Kira & Isaak made this a book I had a really hard time putting down. If you like dark romances with suspense and spice then you should definitely pick this up!
Thank you to The Author Agency for the chance to read & review this book before release!
Woah, was this good!!! The story line, the suspense, the characters, the tropes, the spice, the narration… All of it! 😍 It was definitely my cup of tea.
I was immediately sucked in after chapter one, and could already feel that this was going to be a smash hit, by the 25% mark. The banter and the chemistry between Isaak and Kira was so palpable, and my god, the spice scenes were so. damn. good. Perfect amount of description, intimacy and delicious dirty talk. 🥵
Isaak is hired to be a bodyguard for Kira who needs protection after discovering she has a stalker. & let me tell you, I was desperately trying to unravel the stalker plot line and I found myself actually surprised at who it was. I guessed wrong, afraid to say. 😂 the suspense throughout the book added that extra element of tension between Isaak and Kira and left them in a lot of forced prox situations that I was eating up. These two are like fire and gasoline around each other. They burn so hot and so bright when they’re together.
Man oh man, the narration for this was absolutely incredible! Performed in duet by Sean Masters and Michelle Sparks, and they really took this story to a whole new level with their voice acting. What a perfect duo for these characters! I was completely enthralled listening to this. These two narrators really know how to put so much emotion into their acting, and it’s amazing to listen to.
If you love bodyguard, romantic suspense romances with a tall scarred Viking looking military man, then you have to pick this up. Especially the audio, you can’t skip out on this amazing listening experience! 🤩
3.5 stars Hot. Tense. Addictively messy. Ruined Vows delivers a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers ride packed with heat and emotional push-pull. Isaak is the brooding, dominant protector fantasy come to life, and Brooke’s bratty defiance makes their dynamic crackle with intensity. The sexual tension is 🔥 and when it explodes, it really delivers. A few story beats could’ve used more development, but honestly? I was too busy fanning myself to care. Dark romance lovers, this one's for you.
Kira is dealing with an unknown st@lker and hires Isaak has her bodyguard. Her passion is becoming a therapist and helping people. Yes she is privileged but that doesn’t mean she has had it easy. Isaak is ex-military and takes his job seriously…but there is something about Kira. She is currently in a semi-arranged engagement to her childhood friend…but rules were made to broken…right?
Both of these narrators are so good and have such a wide range when it comes to emotions - Michelle really brought out the playful brat side of Kira and also the vulnerable side. Kira is so caring and wants to help others but she is really struggling with familial obligations and pressures that are so toxic.
Sean really brought out Isaak’s broody protective alpha side and also his emotional side, especially with his past trauma. Also his voice is just swoon worthy and easy to listen to…
Two Words: Pep Talk (IYKYK)
And the spicy scenes are…well…. 🔥🔥🔥
These characters seem like total opposites but they have this deep connection and amazing chemistry, and you really feel that in the audio. Both of them have some great character growth too.

This is a great age gap romance with an element of danger. A wealthy woman is engaged to the man chosen for her. Everything is going well until her bodyguard arrives. He is older and she is immediately smitten. This is a well written book with exceptional characters.

Ruined Vows is part of an interconnected world by author Stasia Black. Each book will follow a different couple and can be read in any order. This is Isaac and Kyra's story.
I listened to this book ton audio. It is performed in duet style narration by Sean Masters and Michelle Sparks. Both are such fabulous actors and really brought this story to new heights. There were some very emotional scenes in this book and Sean and Michelle were superb. The story really drew me in. I love bodyguard books but this one had such a different element that I enjoyed. Stacia took the mental heath rep to another level...... in a phenomenal way! The characters each had past traumas which gave a different aspect to how people deal with and heal from those experiences. This book also has some very spicy scenes that were written so well. This was an amazing read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thank you to must love audio & lyrics audiobooks for this alc!! Contemporary romance with dark content. Check your trigger warnings!
I was really looking forward to this book. I love a good bodyguard x bratty fmc banter back and forth. Our FMC is a professor at a university and she’s receiving very explicit threats of violence, and decides to hire a bodyguard. How she ends up hiring *said* bodyguard is thru means that are not of the normal hiring agency variety… but thru connections at a club.. forced proximity, trauma and a 15 year age gap all contribute to where this story goes. Also the fiancé situation was a nice touch. A little problematic love triangle, I’ll eat that up anyday. The overall story I enjoyed and the narration was excellent. Albeit a little long, and the ending was wild and random, I’d say it was good! An intriguing storyline, not one for everyone.. but good nonetheless.
Holy smokes...this book is steamy!! Kira appears innocent but really is anything but. Isaak sees her for who she really is but can he keep her safe when he is distracted.

This is an ARC review. I want to thank Stacia Black for allowing me the chance to read this book ahead of release day! This book is the third installment of the series. While I haven’t read the first two, you would not need to in order to follow along but it could be helpful just to know the friend dynamic. Kira and Isaak’s love story has many bumps in the road but the chemistry between the two allowed the to overcome them all. Kira’s needing protection from an unknown stalker and Isaak so willingly steps up to be her protector. Isaak gave off all the alpha male type from the very beginning and he is exactly who Kira needed to feel safe and loved. Only catch is technically, Kira is engaged to be married to someone else.
The whole story line truly comes full circle and it was a gem of a book to read. The mental health sub story line was absolutely accurate and top notch to show every day people reading this book, we all go through something no matter who we are. I thoroughly enjoy the found family friendship group for both of them. Based on this read, I will be reading books 1 & 2 just for catch up. Then I’ll be impatiently waiting for book 4 to come out to answer some much needed answers with how it ends.
This was so good… Isaak takes a job as Kira’s personal protection officer in order to protect her from a dangerous stalker. They have more in common than one would expect. Their mutual lack of a nurturing childhood molded them into the people they are today, left to deal with their ongoing emotional issues while trying to move forward towards a brighter future… I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.
Stay In Your Box All her life Kira has stayed in her box, done what’s she’s told, gotten engaged to who she should. But when an obsessed, deranged stalker invades her life Isaak is hired to protect her. And she finally feels safe, seen, heard! Isaak becomes her way out of the box into the most decadent, thrilling, passionate time of her life! If only it can last.
I love a good bodyguard romance and I was excited to give this one a go but I had a reallly hard time warming up to the heroine. Kira was definitely a complex character and the author does a great job fleshing her out and making her interesting. But her snark and snobby attitude towards Isaak for well over half the book just rubbed me the wrong way.
It was hard to see someone who claimed to know when she was being manipulated keep falling back into her old ways. The sick revelations about Drew were also really freaking disturbing. I get that Kira’s upbringing left a lot of trauma behind and Kira will probably be carrying scars her whole life after what she went through but I kept waiting for her to snap out of it and fight back! When she finally does, after revealing some truly messed up information, it was almost anti-climactic. After all the waffling back and forth and desperately clinging to her toxic relationships, even knowing it was going to lead to a life of misery got to be too frustrating.
Isaak was a solid character, yes, he came off a little gruff and he kind of played into the caveman persona Kira took him for but he had integrity and a protective streak for her a mile wide. Did she deserve it, probably not. Especially when I think about the OTT stuff he had to deal with because Kira didn’t have the backbone to fight. It’s a bit mind boggling. But then again, this is a romance so of course these two work things out and end up living their HEA together.
I really liked the ending. Bloody mess and all. I liked seeing them both in (their unique spin on) domestic bliss. I wish we’d seen more of that laid back Kira earlier in the book because her snarky bratty attitude got old fast. Overall it was a crazy read with a lot of OTT twists and turns, drama and suspense but the lack of warmth from the FMC didn’t help any. The fact that she sneers at the only person who’s shown her kindness and care but simps for the true villains was the final nail in this coffin.
Such a turn for the better!! AND excellent narration of the audiobook by Michelle Sparks and Sean Masters (who sound awfully similar to Aiden Snow) 🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️
For some reason I just didn’t connect with the first book in this series “7 days” (previously titled “Cherry Auction”. That one has an uncomfortable vibe and the MMCs aggression and revenge plans muddy the waters too much when it comes to the power exchange dynamic and the issue of trust is just shoved under the bed. So due to that, I wasn’t expecting to like this one either. But since the audiobook was on my book-streaming app, I gave it a go and I’m so pleased I did. It kicked off quite basic but had an undertone and maturity that I didn’t expect.
I especially found the FMCs exploration and research into the subject of kink and BDSM elements truly interesting. As she observes the “goings on” at the club though a lens of psychology, and the ability of incorporating these practices as alternative therapies in handling various psychological conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, ODC, depression and phobias. Her thoughts on the use of a power exchange dynamic to explore the possibilities of submission or dominance in tackling trauma, or relaxing issues, are interesting and widely discussed it seems. The mentality of handing over control or taking it back, when practiced with an experienced and reliable partner in a safe environment, of cause.
I’m impressed that the book managed to keep things fun and spicy while having this very serious theme. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy (the hell out of) the spicy scenes which were perfectly timed and executed. I love when the PoV shifts during a spicy scene so we get both MCs emotions and thoughts as they happened. The narrative in these scenes always felt joyful and mutually engaging. What ever happened the underlying trust and respect came through even in situations of dominance, role playing and degradation play. This might seem OTT for me to comment on but I feel strongly about this both as a parent and as a schoolteacher of teens myself. All kinds of sexual expression in media DO end up in the hands and ears of much younger and inexperienced readers than expected. Much more often than we assume and there needs to be a built in understanding of limits, boundaries and safety. Even though authors give TW and encourage reader discretion, that doesn’t make a difference if the book itself portrays situations that are expected to be the norm yet are unsafe and unhealthy both physically and emotionally.
I’m getting off my soapbox now. Sorry.
So I’m summary: Book - Good. MCs - Good. And narration - superb. ❤️

I’m down bad for this series you guys! You know when you consume a lot of something - books, movies, etc. - things can become a bit predictable? Obviously not exact details but the broad strokes are the same? Yeah, this series is NOT THAT! I thought I had these characters pegged down…NOPE! For that reason I don’t want to spoil anything on plot. I will say that I LOVE how this heroine fought back against the status quo and her mother can kick rocks - I haven’t raged at a character like this since Halsey’s mom! #iykyk I do love an author that can pull that strong emotion out of their readers though!
Guys - Sean and Michelle together were phenomenal in duet! This story covers some heavy topics and the emotional depth they each delivered for their respective characters absolutely enhanced the listening experience.
Highly recommend this audiobook if you’re a fan of spice with plot, unpredictable plot twists, a protective, dirty-talking possessive alpha MMC, a strong, intelligent FMC who fights back against the status quo and finally gets the love she deserves.
Thank you Must Love Audio & Stasia Black for the ALC!
If you love a book with complex characters that have layers, and the dynamics between the FMC and the MMC connects them on an emotional level, throw in the palatable chemistry and the undeniable tension that makes them well suited to each other, then this story is for you.
Kira comes from a rich and controlling family, who works to forge her own path in life. Isaak is ex-military, having had a rough life growing up. He is tasked with protecting Kira from a stalker.
They are both polar opposites, from the beginning they clash, which sets the foundation for them to act on their feelings for each other. Isaak is aware that Kira is engaged to be married, as he gets to know her he learns why, but it doesn’t stop the two of them becoming entangled with each other.
Then things take a dramatic turn for both Kira and Isaak. Kira learns who her stalker is as shes forced to go through the farce of her marriage, Isaak is put through the wringer, literally, only to put himself in the line of fire, saving his girl, both declaring their love, finally.
Despite the insurmountable odds, they helped each other with their trauma, solidifying their relationship, deepening their love for each other.
Kira and Isaak’s story is packed with drama on every level, the banter between these two will melt you, the suspense keeping you on the edge of your seat, the side characters adding an extra layer to their relationship.
The spice was spicy. Isaak was definitely packing the daddy vibes. They both knew how to give as good as they get, because Isaak has met his match in a woman who likes it hard, rough and dirty, just like him.
Recommend both the author and the book.
I received an ARC. Therefore I am submitting a voluntary review.
This was SO hot! The story continues here and yes though this can be read as a standalone, it's so amazing to be able to read about the friends and family members of loved ones. This is a full story and one full of triggers. Please be careful when reading! This topic includes the lifestyle of people who scene at clubs that cater to a certain lifestyle of pleasure. NOT my thing, as I'm not into people watching my couple but she is such a great writer and I absolutely LOVE bodyguard romances!! They are my favorite and this was so, so delicious.
The threats were mounting and she needed a real bodyguard. It turns out she was getting something very real and so much more than a protector.
I do so appreciate the fact that both of our leads have traumatic pasts. I felt for what he had to deal with and of course hers was so scarring. The two have such SCORCHING hot chemistry and I loved their banter even as the crazy piled up. He was so good for her and honestly vice versa as well. I loved that they have spice but yet have these sweet cuddly moments. The scary aspects were done well, I was certainly creeped out and sad over the events here. I chose to read this but still wish it didn't have the public aspect of the couple's intimate moments. I do also wish her friend hadn't been with him at all. Not my preference. This was such an intense read and such a hot one.

This is a dark romance. It possibly could contains triggers for some readers. Make sure you check the trigger warnings. This is the story of King and Isaak. King is a girl that feels the need to hair a bodyguard. She knows that her life is in danger and needs someone to help her. When she hires Isaak, he immediately makes her feel safe and that hasn't happened no matter who she is around, for a while. There is a connection that is more then about safety though. However, King is engaged to Drew. Her childhood friend who has been there though all the ups and downs of them growing up and they know each other's families like the back of their hands. They know what the other has suffered thanks to their parents. Her only way out though is Drew if she can survive the person who is relentlessly stalking her. But she never counted on her feelings for Isaak and the time they would spend together changing the things she thinks she wants. Will this change the plans she has had solidified for a while? Will they be able to keep her safe and catch her tormentor? You have to read to find out those things. I loved every single second of reading this book. It pulls you in from the very beginning and you will be reading well past your bedtime. If you like dark romances, then you don't want to miss this one.
4 Sizzling Stars Running from danger and straight into the arms of her new bodyguard, Isaak, proves to be a thrilling yet tumultuous journey in Ruined Vows. Kira, our heiress in danger, appears to be the perfect daughter with an immaculate reputation. However, her facade shatters upon meeting Isaak, a battle-scarred ex-military man whose guarded demeanor and dark glances both intrigue and unsettle her.
What ensues is a compelling romance that thrives on tension. Isaak, who is as rugged as he is jaded, views Kira as nothing more than a spoiled rich girl playing at being tough. Yet, his burning gaze and clenched jaw reveal a much more complicated emotion simmering beneath the surface. Kira finds herself caught between her family's expectations and her undeniable attraction to a man who is everything she shouldn't want. Their banter is sharp and delicious, showcasing the stark contrast between their worlds, and it adds layers to their relationship. The reader is treated to a tantalizing mix of steamy moments and engaging character development. One of the book's standout aspects is its strong representation of mental health issues, including OCD, PTSD, and anxiety. This depth of character exploration is beautifully written and resonates throughout the narrative.
Ruined Vows also explores the theme of found family, highlighting that the bonds we forge can often be more significant than those we're born into. While the stalker element introduces an edge of fear, the intensity peaks and falls, keeping readers engaged without being edge-of-your-seat thrilling.
Ruined Vows is the third book in the Carnal series but I didn’t read the prior two. I was missing a bit of the context as to who some of the characters from the club were but this story focuses on Kira and Isaak. I really liked Kira and found her to be relatable to me as someone who also suffers from some of the same things she does and Isaak was sweet as well once the story got really rolling. I found the storyline to be pretty easy to follow along with although there were some parts that the writing didn’t really flow well. I did think it started to drag a tiny bit in the middle but then picked up again in the last half. Some of it was a bit predictable but still enjoyable for me. I will say I didn’t really care for some of the pop culture references - I often find this doesn’t help a book to age very well and it gets annoying to read about real life stuff in books. I almost rated it higher but the ending for me wasn’t very satisfying. It’s a bit confusing because it seems like it’s a set up for Moira and Bane’s story but they were book two so are the timelines of these two books intertwined? I haven’t read that one so I’m not sure where it sits in reference to the events of this book. Overall I had a good time reading Ruined Vows and I really liked these characters and how their relationship developed.
I received an ARC of this book from BookSirens and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’m a sucker for a bodyguard romance, and Ruined Vows by Stasia Black absolutely delivered. This book had everything I love—an age-gap dynamic, a grumpy MMC, a strong and independent FMC, simmering tension, and a delicious splash of BDSM. It was the perfect mix.
I was lucky enough to receive an ALC from Must Love Audio, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Michelle Sparks is always a standout, and Sean Masters is quickly climbing my list of favorite male narrators. The audio is performed in duet narration—a huge plus—and produced by East House Productions, which never misses.
Our FMC, Kira, isn’t your typical rich girl. Despite coming from a wealthy, high-society family, she’s determined to break free from her controlling mother. Her plan? Marry someone “appropriate” to secure her inheritance and fund her dream of opening a psychology practice. But when she discovers she’s being stalked, she takes a friend’s advice and hires a personal security detail.
Enter Isaak—our grumpy, late-thirties ex-soldier trying to build his protection agency. The moment he meets Kira, the sparks fly, and the attraction is undeniable.
The tension in this book is chef’s kiss—so juicy and well-paced. Fair warning: it’s spicy with strong BDSM themes, so be sure to check trigger warnings if that’s a concern. But if you’re a fan of bodyguard romances, this one is an absolute must-listen!
Kira is the good little rich girl that is a young overachiever, a rule follower, and a people pleaser with a touch of OCD. She's always trying to get the approval of her parents but is never good enough for them. They had arranged her marriage at a young age to make sure the 'right' families merge. The wedding is now months away, she's finishing up her Ph.D. in psychology, and unfortunately she's picked herself up a scary stalker. She needs a new bodyguard - personal protection officer - that will protect her and not report her every move back to her parents. Enter Isaak. Big, hot, older Isaak. He vows not to let her out of his sight and to keep her safe from her stalker until he is caught or until her wedding day.
The story is pretty predictable but I'm letting it slide because I like Kira & Isaak and their relationship. They're both two broken people that are better for each other than they realize. Overall, I liked the story but was a tad disappointed with little to no explanation of motives.
Some trigger warnings include BDSM activity, having a stalker, veteran PTSD, controlling parents that care about image and money over parenting.
*(despite release dates, this should be read before Unholy Obsession)
The mental health rep in this book was spot on. I felt like the inside of my head was written on the page. Stasia's verbalization of Kira's OCD and anxiety is superb.
Kira has been raised to be the perfect beaten down and manipulated daughter, yet she has started to rebel in small ways. You know, like a sex club. Now she has a stalker, so she hires Isaak to be her bodyguard. No surprise what happens next. 😉 But...Kira is engaged to her childhood friend in a situation arranged by her controlling, wealthy parents. There are a lot of pieces to the story, but I promise they all come together for a satisfying conclusion.
I love Isaak and Kira. He is her safe place, and he is able to help her emotionally and mentally when she needs him. Despite being able to calm her triggers, he is dealing with severe PTSD. I may have cried a couple of times in this one.
While you could read this as a standalone, I wouldn't. You really need to read 7 Days and Unholy Obsession first. You will meet all of the ancillary characters, as well as Kira and Isaak. The three books are running a concurrent timeline with 7 Days slightly ahead. I can't wait for the next book!
