Heaven Official's Blessing Vol.4

Rate this book
As a fierce sandstorm rages outside, our heroes seek refuge in a mysterious cave, only to discover a merchant caravan huddled there, waiting out the storm. But the cave holds a darker secret -- it's the ancient tomb of a legendary general who fought in this very spot two centuries ago, around the same time Xie Lian was scavenging nearby...
The merchants believe Banyue Pass is safe, with a skilled guide leading the way. But fate has other plans: a sudden attack by deadly scorpion-snakes leaves a merchant and the crown prince poisoned. The only hope for survival lies in the rare shanyue herb, hidden within the ruins of a long-lost city. Will our heroes find it in time? The adventure just took a deadly turn!

“Don’t worry. Whatever happens, I’ll go first.”

I had a really good time reading this one, mostly because the character interactions are so engaging. Xie Lian continues to be one of those protagonists who is impossible not to root for. He’s calm, thoughtful, and deeply compassionate, even when the situation around him is dangerous. The moment where he grabs the Scorpion Snake to stop it from attacking San Lang really stuck with me. It’s such a quick, instinctive decision, and it says a lot about who he is as a person. He doesn’t hesitate if someone else might get hurt. And of course, the scorpion snake scene between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian was easily my favorite part of the book. I adored that moment. It feels tense, slightly intimate, and very memorable. San Lang continues to be the most intriguing character in the story for me. He stays relaxed in situations where anyone else would panic, which makes every scene with him feel a little mysterious.

The setting in the Banyue ruins also adds a lot to the atmosphere of the story. The desert feels dangerous and eerie, and the idea that the ruins are filled with ghosts, curses, and hidden creatures creates a constant sense of unease. There’s always the feeling that something unexpected could happen. I also liked the small pieces of history scattered throughout the chapters, especially the tragic story connected to the kingdom. Moments like that give the world a little more depth and make the place feel like it has a real past behind it. The plot moves quickly and there’s a lot happening in a short amount of time, which kept me interested the whole way through.

The only thing that pulled me out of the experience a bit was how some of the action scenes were presented in the panels. I knew exactly what was happening because I’ve already watched the donghua, but if I were only reading this donghua comic, I think a few sequences would have been confusing to follow. The book itself is physically beautiful. The outside presentation is honestly stunning. The cover design and overall finish look amazing on a shelf. Unfortunately, the inside doesn’t quite match that quality. A noticeable number of panels look blurry, which is disappointing because the artwork itself is so lovely. I really wish the interior printing had been given the same care as the cover. If the image quality had been cleaner, it would have made the reading experience even better. Even with that issue, I still enjoyed reading this part of the series again.

*3.5-4. Listen, I love the TGCF donghua and I think they did an incredibly good job with it. However, the night scenes are just too dark 😭 and that translated over to this adaptation. Half the Banyue Arc takes place at night...I was straining my eyes. The story is good though

Oooooo Hua Cheng semi-reveal! What a good ending for this volume, especially the slight hint at the end. I do love this. I will say, every time there’s actual plot stuff happening I’m sitting here like yea yea we know we get it now get back to Xie Lian and San Lang because this is what I’m here for.
