Rate this book
As a fierce sandstorm rages outside, our heroes seek refuge in a mysterious cave, only to discover a merchant caravan huddled there, waiting out the storm. But the cave holds a darker secret -- it's the ancient tomb of a legendary general who fought in this very spot two centuries ago, around the same time Xie Lian was scavenging nearby...
The merchants believe Banyue Pass is safe, with a skilled guide leading the way. But fate has other plans: a sudden attack by deadly scorpion-snakes leaves a merchant and the crown prince poisoned. The only hope for survival lies in the rare shanyue herb, hidden within the ruins of a long-lost city. Will our heroes find it in time? The adventure just took a deadly turn!

“Friendship is not about who you are. It’s about how you get along. If I like you, I’ll like you even if you’re a beggar. If I hate you, I’ll hate you even if you’re the emperor. It’s as simple as that. So, why should I ask?”

I couldn’t believe I was already on volume five. It honestly felt like I had just started reading the donghua/comic and suddenly I’m this far into the story. This volume covers the events adapted in episodes nine and ten of the donghua, and like the previous books, the pacing moves very quickly. Scenes shift so fast that I sometimes wish certain moments had a little more time to breathe. There are a lot of emotional and dramatic developments happening, but the story pushes forward almost immediately after they appear. While it keeps the reading experience exciting, it also made parts of the story feel like they passed by too quickly for me to fully sit with them.

Even with the fast pacing, the characters are still the highlight for me. Xie Lian continues to be the heart of the story, and his decisiveness really stands out in these chapters. He always acts so fast, even when everything around them is chaotic. San Lang also becomes more intriguing here. His presence in these scenes feels mysterious and powerful, but at the same time he shows an unsurprisingly attentive side toward Xie Lian. Their interactions add some lighter moments during otherwise tense situations. The supporting characters also bring a lot of emotion to the story. Their past conflicts and complicated feelings create a sense of tragedy that makes the situation feel heavy even while the plot keeps moving forward.

Like the previous volumes, the physical presentation of the book is absolutely beautiful. The cover design and the overall quality of the design look great and really stand out on a shelf. I still love how much care goes into the outside presentation of these books. One issue that continues to bother me is the blurry parts in some panels, especially when the tones become darker. It can make certain scenes look a little muddy, which is frustrating because the scene itself is gorgeous when it’s clear. Even with that issue and the fast pacing, I still enjoyed reading this volume and seeing the story continue to unfold.

As annoying as “Fu Yao” can be during certain scenes, I think it comes out of a place of forceful love. I have way too many thoughts about it over things that aren’t even in this volume, but it makes me want to reread all of TGCF again.

I'm as biased about this story as the next person, but the night scenes are just so hard to see I had to take off a star. This whole volume takes place in dark hole, can't see much!
