Political intrigue. Forbidden attraction. A deadly conspiracy that threatens two worlds.

For Linnea, newly appointed chancellor of the Cresteks, power comes with a target on her back. When whispers of treachery echo through the corridors of her city, she makes a desperate move—summoning the one Dothvek warrior she can't forget from her brother's wedding.

Zexx never wanted to leave the sacred sands of his homeland for the enemy's gleaming city. But when Linnea calls for his help, something beyond duty compels him to answer. Reluctantly accepting the role of Dothvek ambassador, he finds himself caught between his people's ancient distrust and the undeniable pull he feels toward the strong-willed chancellor.

As Zexx uncovers a sinister plot against Linnea, their political alliance transforms into something far more dangerous—and forbidden. With assassins closing in and tensions between their worlds escalating, they must rely on each other if there’s to be any hope for peace between their peoples.

Time is running out. Can love between sworn enemies survive in a world determined to keep them apart?

If you like hot alien warriors, exotic alien worlds, and fated mates romance with a happily ever after, you'll love PAWN, the 12th book in Tana Stone's sci-fi romance Barbarians of the Sand Planet series.

I love sexy aliens and independent heroines. I grew up on Star Trek: Next Generation and Star Wars (and I adore them equally). My favorite superhero is Thor (with Aquaman a close second because, well, Jason Momoa), my favorite dessert is key lime pie (okay, fine, all pie), and I still lament the loss of Firefly.

I live in North Carolina in the US and have one husband, two teenagers, and two neurotic cats. I sometimes wish I could teleport to a holographic space station like the one in my tribute brides series (or maybe vacation at the oasis with the sand planet barbarians). :-) When I'm not writing, I love to paddleboard, dive, travel, and read obsessively!

🧡 “I love you. Beyond sand and suns, beyond stars and time.”
~~~
Linnea is amazing! She's so strong, resilient, smart and diplomatic, skillfully navigating the treacherous waters of Crestek politics. And there is much more to her than meets the eye. Because underneath her reserved appearance, there’s a caring, fierce and passionate woman. Linnea is absolutely incredible and I loved her so, so much!
Zexx is the Dothvek’s clan head of security. He’s one strong, dangerous, honorable and confident warrior. Even more, he’s a fiercely protective and utterly irresistible badass. And he’s quite bossy and delightfully possessive, too. Zexx is an incredible male and I adored everything about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Linnea and Zexx! During her brother’s wedding, Linnea spends one incredible night with a Dothvek warrior. It was supposed to be just one night, but things definitely didn’t go as expected. Especially after, as the newly appointed Crestek chancellor, trying to keep the fragile peace between the Crestek and the Dothvek, Linnea summons the warrior she can’t forget to be the ambassador of his people. I adored Linnea and Zexx together! Their chemistry was incredible from the very beginning and I loved all the tension between them. Both really tried to put their feelings aside and do their duties, but fate just couldn’t be denied. And when they gave into the undeniable need, the passionate moments they shared were so hot. But their love was both dangerous and forbidden, especially with the enemies surrounding them. Linnea is a strong woman and she needed an equally strong male by her side to face all the challenges thrown her way. And Zexx was exactly that. They were absolutely perfect for each other and I couldn’t get enough of either of them!
In addition, the storyline was fantastic! Enemies are closer than anyone expects and everything is at stake. But there are allies lurking in the shadows, too. And the political intrigues, the suspense and the unexpected turns of events kept me glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, the story is another awesome addition to the series and a spectacular series finale! It’s filled with danger, suspense, action, twists, drama, blazing-hot passion and wonderful characters.
I loved it!
What happens to you, happens to me
I loved, loved this enemies to lovers, opposites attract, fated mind mates, forbidden alien romance. The story had the perfect balance of swoon, humor, love, real life issues, political machinations, danger, and spice. I am always a fan of uber protective alpha males being paired with smart brave capable females who need loving more than they need rescuing. This story does that beautifully. Following the death of her authoritarian brother, Linnea is the newly appointed Chancellor of the Cresteks, a native species on the Sand Planet that embraces technology. Zexx is warrior and the security chief of the Dothveks, a more primitive native empathic species on the Sand Planet. They meet when Linnea travels for her brother, Karv’s wedding at the Dothvek compound. There is overwhelming attraction and chemistry between Zexx and Linnea but their lives are light years apart. Once Zexx is appointed the Dothvek ambassador to the Crestveks, guaranteeing their closeness for an extended period, the journey to their HEA really begins. To get there, Zexx and Linnea will need to unpack some baggage, deal with backstabbing Cresteks, while learning to trust and embrace a major life course correction. Like all books by this author, this well written story was hard to put down and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, good world building, and an engaging storyline. His was a wonderful book to end this series. I have loved reading all the books and the big gold aliens. 4.5 stars.
Pawn is the twelfth Barbarians of the Sand Planet book by author Tana Stone, and it was wonderful being back again with the Dothvek.
Linnea the new Crestek chancellor is attending her brother Karv’s wedding to his new wife Maya (their story is book 8) in the oasis village, trying to enjoy herself for once even as the clan’s head of security Zexx constantly has eyes on her.
After a little too much wine and teasing words with the stoic warrior as the evening winds down he ends up carrying the tipsy Linnea to her tent for the night when she nearly keels over, and leaves her there.
But Linnea wants more, and him, even if it can only be for one night and goes after Zexx, only to find him waiting outside her tent.
Being empathic he knows what she’s feeling and the feeling is mutual.
No goodbyes the next day as Linnea slips away to return to her walled city and duties wondering what could have been if she had stayed instead.
With a fragile peace treaty between the Dothvek and Cresteks, political machinations, danger, treachery, fated mates, emotion, and undeniable passion, Zexx and Linnea will be together again when he reluctantly accepts a new role as the Dothvek ambassador to Crestek.
I loved the writing, steamy passion, action, adventure, and characters who made the story a fantastic read, and kept the tension edge of the seat. It was quite the journey to a well deserved HEA.
Oh, and does that epilogue ever hint at some Vandar goodies coming down the galactic highway!.
Gleeful Goblin Review: It's so wild that this is the 12th book in this series already! I love expansive series where the world gets "filled in" more and more with each book and I think this series does that very well. Just like I'm always happy to revisit my big blue boys in the IPB series, these golden guys steal my heart every time. Our FMC is Linnea, the Crestek chancellor and she crashes into our MMC Zexx's orbit by way of her brother Karv's wedding. There's tension from the beginning because Linnea feels watched by Zexx who is the clan head of security. In a very positive way, Zexx reminds me of early Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation because of his stoicism and strong sense of duty and honor. That night following the wedding is full of wine and Linnea teasing Zexx the whole time. The tension builds and later so does passion, but only for a night before each of them have to go back to their separate lives that each think are their only paths forward. But Fate has other plans. Politics and intrigue abound with Zexx getting drawn into Linnea's sphere once again but now as the Dothvek ambassador to Crestek. Balancing love, politics, and fate keeps these two on their toes and me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the action and adventure woven throughout the story and knowing that in the end, a hard won HEA was waiting. 5/5 Stars.
The new Crestek Chancellor is Linnea and she is in the Dothveks for her brother, Karv’s wedding to Maya. The Dothvek clan head of security is Zexx and the whole point was to finish setting up the treaty between the two peoples who had been enemies for generations. Karv had completed the tahadu which now made him eligible to be trained as a Dothvek warrior. Zexx & Linnea are drawn to each other and very attracted to the other. So they have a night to themselves and it changes everything. After returning to her city, Linnea takes up her duties as Chancellor once again and finds herself thinking of Zexx more and more so she comes up with a plan to make him her Ambassador. Hoo boy, the misunderstandings. The intrigue. Cresteks seem to breathe and intrigue at the same time. Sheesh. Things get crazy and it seems that there are Cresteks that do not like the peace treaty and want it gone as well as other treasonous things (from our POV). We also get to see a bunch of the other couples again from previous books and mentions of others. I can’t get enough of Tori’s bloodthirstiness. lol. There are romantic sections in the book, as well as crazy stuff and cutesy stuff. I love K’Nar too and I hope to see more of him in later books.
Pawn
I always enjoy the interconnectedness of this author's worlds and watching the characters call on each other to solve problems. There is the seemingly simple phrase that the Dothveks have, “What happens to you, happens to me”. At first it doesn't seem like much but it can apply in a lot of different places in life. In RL, especially the US, I think we practice the opposite as seen through our hyper independence. We live in the illusion that our actions are singular events that don't ripple out through space and time and come back to affect us.
The example used by the MMC to illustrate this saying was perfect. He and his friend attack a sand snake and the MMC almost dies, but his friend saves him.
“He risked his life to save you?”
“He did.” His voice was warm at the memory. “What happened to me, happened to him.”
And chef's kiss to the author for having that same friend show up in the next scene and make a joke about the MMC's folly with that sand snake.
"I hope this is better than your plan to spear the sand snake," he said dryly. “The two of us barely survived that.”
The best romances build delightful and abiding relationships among many characters.
Linnea is with the Dothveks for her brother's wedding, and is instantly drawn to Zexx, the security chief. They do try and fight it, but mind mates aren’t going to be able to fight it long. They spend an amazing and romantic night together, and yes, since I am a romance reader, I definitely thought it was romantic. So, one amazing night together before she goes back to being the Crestek chancellor. After being back for a hot second, she decides in order to keep the peace treaty and strengthen the alliance between their people they each need an ambassador to come and stay at each location….and of course who does she request, yup the sexy security chief that she can’t stop thinking about. But not everyone is happy with this decision, and all is not what it appears, and definitely not easy, but change never is.
Safe read with mind mates that just can’t keep their hands off each other no matter how hard they try. Good fast paced storyline with some what the moments. We get to see our bounty hunter favorites, and gain some new favorites. A good finale for the series, an epilogue, and a hea.
an excellent story of how two peoples once enemies and now trying to find peace were brought together by fate and love and how those together can overcome even the darkest evil that lingers in the shadows and tries to destroy the fragile peace being slowly won. linnea is the first female chancellor but there are those older more rigid council members who don't believe she can lead nor do they want peace with their enemies. zexx is the dothvek that is drawn to linnea when they meet at a wedding. zexx ends up becoming the ambassador in the crestek city in order to help foster peace between them and his ppl the dothvek while trying to hide his growing feelings for linnea and hers for him. danger is afoot but there are also those who believe in and fight for the peace she is trying so hard to bring to her ppl. intrigue, danger, excitement, suspense, plotting, and more abounds in this great last story in the sand barbarians story with a great ending bringing two worlds together at last.
Enemies fated to be mates
Zexx is the security chief for the Dothvek. His greatest security concern? The Cresteks. Even worse, Linnea is the new Crestek chancellor, visiting the Dothvek village for her brother's wedding. There may be a truce between their people but no trust as far as Zexx is concerned. His learned distrust is no match for his attraction to her. Linnea proposes they share one night in the sands before she leaves. Both feel the possibility of more but ignore it. When Linnea has him summoned to her city, he's livid and determined to do his duty and nothing more. They quickly give in to their explosive passion. When Zexx learns of a plot against Linnea, he'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Being mates, they work best together and with an alliance of old and new friends foil their enemies and chart a new path forward for their people. A strong and fitting end to the series that also teases more of our favorite Sand Barbarians.
This is another thrilling story about the conflict between the two cleans on the sand planet, I love how Tana brings a story to life with lots of action, drama, and especially the steamy moments between the characters. When Linnea goes to her brothers wedding in the Dothvek Oasis she is guarded by their chief of security Zexx and although she finds him overbearing, she is strangely attracted to him and later spends time with him in a one night only situation. These two are supposed to be enemies, but fate is lending a hand in their connection. Being the Chancellor of her people the Crestek, she has high expectations to be an example to her people. Their romance is forbidden, and it could mean an end if they are discovered. When Zexx discovers a plot against Linnea, he goes all out to protect her and eventually they go on to live they’re happily ever after.
Pawn is the last book in the Barbarians of the Sand Planet by Tana Stone, but the characters will reappear in other of her series featuring the Vandar! Linnea is the new Chancellor of the Crestek people who live in a walled city far from the sands. At her brother’s Dothvek wedding to a human female, Linnea decides to give in to her attraction to the Dothvek security officer Zexx and have a one night stand before she returns home. But once home, she misses him and invites him to become the ambassador of his people in Crestec, leading to some unrest a few of her council members. She must learn whom to trust and whom to distrust in order to remain chancellor and change her society for the better… with Zexx at her side!.
Love this series, loved the story. It keeps getting better and better as the series unfolds. This story is about Linnea a newly appointed chancellor for the Crestek and Zexx a Dothvek warrior who was nominated as their ambassador. Linnea is attending her brother's wedding at the Dothvek village. They assigned Zexx their chief of security to watch her. She finds him annoying and attractive. They end up having a night of passion and then she returns home. When unease starts among her people she selects Zexx to be their ambassador. Then Zexx discovers Linnea is being threaten and the fragile truce between their tribes is in danger. What happens afterwards was an entertaining, engaging, romantic, and action filled story that captured me. I'd volunteer to read and review this engaging copy I'd received.
This was the be all and end all of enemies to lovers romance. The intoxicating chemistry between Zexx and Linnea was addictive. The story and plot was riveting.
The dawn of a new era where Some may think that change is not as alluring as it is for others. The deception that Linnea had to face was a devastating reality for her.
Though the Dothveks are the most alluring species Linnea's past dictates her future. Leaving behind past prejudices that put her in a vulnerable position.
The intimacy throughout the pages was a true testament to the meaning of love conquers all.
Though this was the last book in this series I like the way Tana incorporated all the characters from her previous books into it. Hopefully we'll get to revisit them again.
It truly was an epic conclusion. However, that ending was definitely intriguing.
I’m so excited to share that we’ve reached the final installment of the series, and guess what? The two opposing sides on the sand planet have finally found peace! Instead of the usual alliances formed through marriage, this time our couples are brought together by love, and it’s just wonderful to see.
I adored the connection between the main characters—the way they stole little moments together under the guise of meetings really added to the excitement! It made me wonder which was more dangerous: the deadly creatures lurking in the sands or the scheming people trying to take them down. That really cranked up the tension for our couples!.
Linnea is the Chancellor of Crestek and Zexx is the head of security for the Dothvek. Their attraction to each other is at war with the years of mistrust that both sides feel towards each other. One night of giving into to that attraction starts them on a path that could be fatal not just for them but for their people too.
There is a lot of political maneuvering and scheming that they have to beware of as one mis-step could prove to be their undoing.
While the story itself had enough intrigue to keep me interested I felt that things wrapped up a bit neatly considering the level of angst and wariness it seemed to invoke within the plot.
It was also nice to get a little taste of the Vandar towards the end.
I've loved this series ever since I first met the characters when reading the Raider Warlords of the Vandar. I actually put a pause on that series to complete this one because it was so captivating. Tana Stone does an amazing job in resolving the tensions and unresolved conflicts in previous books of the series. The story is fast paced, the FMC and MMC are only in denial for about a quarter of the book, and I loved the loyalties shown by the supporting characters. It was also fantastic to see our favourite bounty hunters again! I'll be revisiting this series in the future, and of course listening to all the audiobooks when they're released. 🌶️🌶️❤️❤️.
This story is quite unlike the previous stories in this series and that necessary backrooms information given here is probably the cause for my feeling the first half of the story drawn out too long. I am used to begin reading this author stories and not stopping until the story is finished. This one, I read the first half in two days! Then the rest was quite a quick reading. The storyline is still magnificent and it was good to read a little also about the bounty hunters and it left you off at that exact place where you ask; when is the next story coming from this author?
This story is getting fabulous four stars from me now.
The twelfth and final book in Tana Stone's Barbarians of the Sand Planet series, Pawn, delivers an explosive and unforgettable conclusion! I was immediately swept away by this fast-paced, thrilling romance that masterfully combines the tension of enemies-to-lovers with the undeniable allure of opposites attracting and the deep connection of fated mind mates in a forbidden alien world. Pawn truly offers everything a reader could desire: swoon-worthy romance between protective, hunky alpha males and smart, tough heroines, intricate political schemes, heart-pounding danger, and deliciously steamy spice. This book, and the entire series, comes with my highest recommendation. I'm already on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting Tana Stone's next captivating series!
These books always deliver
It is the age old story, both groups are descended from the same ancestors, but one group takes to the rough life living on oasis in the deserts while the other lives within a city surrounded by a wall. The council doesn’t like the changes the female chancellor is making including a peace treaty with the Dothveks the Sand dwellers.
This story is full of intrigue, betrayals and secret factions who help to make the changes needed. These are fantastic books that have a bit of everything for the reader including a romantic HEA. I look forward to more by this author.
Action packed, full of heat story that had me on the edge of my seat!! Zexx is the Dothvek’s Clan head of security when he first sees Linnea who is the Crestek’s chancellor who arrives for her brother Karv’s wedding who now lives with the Dothveks. There is immediate instalove and steam but they part only to reunite when Zexx is chosen to be ambassador to Createk. Along the way expect danger, steam, and the finding of your Mind Mate. Stellar addition to the series!!.
Great storytelling! The chemistry between Linnea and Zexx was fire. Their story had political intrigue, forbidden love, and the threat of civil uprising. The interaction between characters from the prior books in the series added to making this story a full-bodied story that continued the series 8n the best way. I love these trips to the Dothvrek and Crestek people. I loved the excitement and the romance that developed between Linnea and Zexx. More please.
The new Crestek chancellor, Linnea has left the city and come to the desert for her brother's wedding. She is instantly attracted to Zekk, chief of security. Thankfully the attraction is mutual and they decide on one night of passion. But fate has a different idea in mind when they discover they are mates. Nevertheless she heads back home but is soon requesting Zekk as the promised ambassador. They may be from two different worlds, but their passion doesn't care. There is also a secret rebellion to squash. Lots of smexy good times and action abound. Great HEA.
This is the final book of the Barbarians of the Sand Planet series. I didn’t find it quite as good a read as some of the earlier volumes. There was the usual mind meld between the couple and the vast majority of the story took place in the city, not the oasis.
There was no physical conflict with those that opposed the new regime. They were rounded up by the members of the resistance and neither main character was involved. Very tame. Fun to see the bounty babes but their participation was minimal.
Political intrigue. Forbidden attraction. A deadly conspiracy that threatens two worlds.
I fell in love with the first book in the Barbarians of the Sand Planet series, and I haven't stopped reading them since.
It's a sort of enemies-to-lovers story involving past distrust between the Dothvek and the Cresteks, with the MCs being Zexx, the Dothvek's security chief, and Linnea, the newly appointed Crestek chancellor.
It had all the elements of Tana's writing: danger, chemistry, steam, and romance.
Linnea and Zexx story. I had such mixed feelings when beginning Pawn! It is the last of the Barbarians Of The Sand Planet series but it is a Barbarians Of The Sand Planet book. Tana takes one of my favorite series out with a bang! So much action, betrayal, loyalty, love and romance! A stubborn Dothvek Warrior and a smart, beautiful Crestek Chancellor. Both fighting what they feel for each other. Wonderful characters, and a great story. I loved every second of it! 5 stars!
The exciting conclusion to a wonderful series…
This is the final book in the Barbarians of the Sand Planet series. The Dothvek’s and the Crestek’s are working towards a peaceful coexistence, however there are still a few rabble rousers trying to sabotage the peace. Linnea, the new Crestek Chancellor and Zexx, the Dothvek Ambassador have other plans… I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.
Pawn Book 12 of Barbarians of the Sand Planet by Tana Stone and is a great conclusion to this wonderful series. We finally got Zexx and Linnea's story after little bits here and there and such a satisfying end but not really since there are other series in the same world by this author. I highly recommend this series and the others by Tana Stone.
They should have been enemies yet there was an attraction neither could deny. Linnea, a Crestek chancellor, was used to commanding, not obeying. She never would have met him if not for her brother marrying a Dothvek. Zexx, a Vandar warrior was also use to commanding and normally would never obey a Crestek. Both had a lot of differences to come to terms with, and more than enough danger to challenge them.
