A dying hybrid. A determined civilian. An undeniable bond.

Prowl
All I want is freedom, like the others. But I’m going to die here, trapped in another prison unless they find someone my Lion will respond to.
I’d given up hope until I scent her. Daff.
My instincts demand I claim her, but could perfection like her ever love a monster like me?

Daff
I signed a two year contract with the military, needing female civilians for an ongoing project. They won’t discuss specifics, but they’ll pay me a small fortune - enough to clear Dad’s medical bills and give us a better future.
What I find when I get there? Rescued Super Soldiers, who are just as much animal as human.
I’ve barely arrived when I find myself face to face with one, deteriorating faster than they can save him.
Prowl.
The connection. The desire. There’s no denying our bond. I’ll give my heart, my body, my soul, to save him. I’ll do everything I can to see him survive, even if it breaks me when I leave.
Because I will have to leave.
There’s no way the military will let me stay.

Lab made soldiers, she saves him, forced proximity, virgin male, You. Are. Mine. found family, secret military compound, touch her and die, Human/animal hybrids, differing anatomy, spice.

Please Prowl ends with a HFN - due to the ongoing fight for the hybrid's rights. The couple ends with a solid, happy relationship. Battle for their rights will continue through the other books in this series, with each book focused on a new couple. Please check Natalie's website for trigger warnings.

📖 Book Review: Prowl (Spliced Love, #1)

Author: Natalie Starkoss
Genre: Paranormal Romance / Genetically engineered hybrids

🦸🏼‍♀️ The Heroine: Daffodil (Daff)

Daff’s journey begins in hardship: growing up in a trailer park, juggling two jobs, and carrying the weight of her father’s medical bills. When a mysterious, high-paying opportunity arises—one that demands secrecy and complete isolation for two years—she seizes it, knowing sacrifice is her only path forward. Whisked away to a hidden tropical island accessible only by helicopter, Daff steps into a world far stranger than she imagined.

🦸🏻‍♂️ The Hero: Prowl

Prowl is no ordinary hero—he’s a lion-human hybrid, engineered in a lab and brutalized by years of confinement and experimentation. Though rescued and relocated to an island sanctuary, his scars run deep. Alongside his brother King, he struggles to heal, but trauma lingers. Nine months ago, his progress unraveled: insomnia, loss of appetite, and violent scent-triggered reactions left him spiraling. Solitude was meant to protect others, but isolation only worsened his PTSD, driving him to desperate measures to escape his nightmares.

📚 The Plot

When Daff arrives, she learns her presence isn’t random—her unique pheromones soothe Prowl’s fractured psyche, offering him the calm he can’t find alone. Determined and compassionate, she becomes his lifeline, refusing to let him fade away. Their bond grows quickly, perhaps too quickly, but the stakes are clear: without her, Prowl may not survive.

🌟 What Worked

• A fresh spin on the hybrid trope, with a premise that feels inventive and distinct.
• Characters with intriguing dynamics, including supporting figures who add texture to the world.
• A layered subplot exploring prejudice, restrictive rules, and the hybrids’ fight for dignity—highlighted by a doctor whose bias underscores the story’s tension.

💔 What Fell Short

• The romance leans heavily into insta-love. Within a week, both characters are “all in,” which undercuts the believability of their connection—especially given Daff’s sudden immersion into a world of hybrids.
• Prowl’s trauma is compelling, but the narrative skimps on depth. His PTSD and backstory deserved richer exploration, which would have added weight to his struggles and made his healing arc more powerful.

💬 Final Thoughts

This book delivers an imaginative premise and a heroine willing to risk everything for a broken, beautiful hybrid. While the romance accelerates too quickly and the emotional layers could have been deepened, the story still offers a unique take on monster romance that fans of the genre will find intriguing. It’s a tale of survival, sacrifice, and the fragile hope that love—even rushed—can be a balm for the deepest wounds.

OMFG!!! What a f***ing fantastic way to start a series- such a powerful book! I am a little gob smacked at how good this story is!

It’s different because it’s not shifters, but its hybrids created and then rescued. But they have never been in the outside world, and their animal instincts are still very reactive especially being predator species- Lions (we meet some other hybrids as well- the world building and character development is essential in this unique series). This book follows Daff and Prowl. They are fighting against the rules set in place and creating waves to create a better living experience for all hybrids.

their love story is not easy, it's quick yet challenging and I couldn't put this book down and stop reading. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to see the evolvement of the rest of the series and characters!!!

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

I wish I could tell you why I loved this book but I don’t know why haha. Usually I can’t shut up and write a lengthy review on pros and cons, what’d I’d change etc etc but this doesn’t need all that.

I usually don’t gravitate towards sci fi or monster, hybrid romances but I’m glad I did with this one. Got me out of my comfort zone and I loved it! Idk if it’s the innocence of Prowl but also his dominance that I loved. Maybe it was just a nice change of pace and story than I normally read that had me enthralled and trapped, read it in half a day. I could not put it down. I think the author did a great job. I’ll be buying it when it comes out and am intrigued on what will happen next!

I received this as an ARC but let me tell you, I really enjoyed this take on shifter romance books. These shifters were created to be soldiers, there are several kinds. They don’t seem to be humans who shift at will but are hybrids instead. We are introduced to lion hybrids, panther hybrids, gorilla hybrid, and wolf hybrids, there may be more in subsequent books but for now this is what we get to meet.
Daff is strong and funny and kind and absolutely the kind of person you would hope to have on your side. She is appalled that the hybrids are treated as monsters and told that’s all they are when clearly they have the capacity to think and speak and feel and are human. She points out that plenty of women love monster smut books and I laughed out loud at that part. I loved her standing up for what she believed in and that her friend Mandy was all in too. I liked that there were bumps in the road and this wasn’t just a they meet and know they are fated mates and then bang. There was spice, but tons of plot. This does not end on a complete cliff hanger, but it does end on a they are together for now for what they can get because its a 2 year contract and then there is a cliffhanger for King. I am interested in the rest of the series, buckle in because I think there will be a lot of books and I think you will be attached to all of the characters (including a deep hatred for a certain vet)

This is my honest ARC review.
Rating it 4.5/5⭐️

Storyline. 5/5⭐️
Characters. 5/5⭐️
🌶️. 4/5⭐️

This is the first time reading a book with this kind of storyline, and I got to say, I actually found it really good!
Going to a secret location where rescued hybrid experiments are being evaluated, helped and treated, the two main characters falling in love while navigating how to safely see things through in a limited time frame. It’s good!
Daph is such a sweetheart but has the courage and strength of a lion (no pun intended🫣), while navigating feelings of instant attraction to Prowl.
Prowl, oh wow, sweet, attentive, protective, possessive, a gorgeous specimen of a hybrid. So well written makes you wanna cuddle him.
🌶️ the spice isn’t a lot and I think it’s ok for a first book. The world building was also what is important in this book. I think as a smut reader myself, a little bit more, explicit content would have been nice, because it has been hinted at from the start of the book that it would revolve a lot about interspecies contact, so I was expecting a more detailed first real encounter🫣🫣🤣

All in all really liked this book! I finished it in one setting in a few hours time span. And I can’t wait to read the next installment of this series🥰

Daff signs a two year top-secret contract with the military, who need female civilians for an ongoing project. Soon she finds herself on a secret island, tasked with helping rescued hybrid super soldiers. She meets Prowl, a lion hybrid who is deteriorating fast, unless she can help him overcome his demons.

Prowl is a fast paced hybrid romance. I love the relationship between Daff and Prowl. They are romantic and tender and absolutely committed to each other.
I really like how both the characters are the perfect match, Daff can calm Prowl and Prowl gives Dad the love she deserves.

I really like the premise and sitting of this book. It was unique and not something I usually come across. Even though this wasn’t a long story, I felt that there was so much information and everything was fleshed out perfectly.

I also liked besides romance in this book, there was a political aspect. The rights of all the hybrids are pushed to the side with them being told they are unlovable. I like how Daff and her friends fight so hard for the rights of Prowl and his family and friends.

This had the perfect blend of plot and spice and I can’t wait to see what happens in King’s book next.

Thank you so much to the author for the arc copy. ❤️🦁

Review: This book had me hooked from page one! 📖🔥 We dive right into the story with Daff, our fearless FMC, who signs up for a two-year contract at a compound where hybrids—part-human, part-animal beings—are trying to integrate into society.

Enter Prowl, a massive, broody lion hybrid with major Mine. Mine. Mine. energy 🦁. From the moment they meet, Daff is the only one who can calm him. Their bond grows, and watching Prowl evolve from a hurt, angry shell to someone who learns to trust and open up? Chef’s kiss. 👏💛

Daff’s presence changes the entire compound. She brings hope to hybrids who’ve only known pain and rejection, proving that love, kindness, and a little stubbornness can heal even the deepest wounds.

While the story ends on a happy for now note, I was desperate for book 2! 😭✨ Thankfully, the author has major plans for this series, so I’ll just be over here, impatiently waiting for more hybrid goodness. 👀🐾

As usual, I'll start by saying a huge thank you to the author for providing me the ARC for this book. This review is my complete honest opinion on my experience reading the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶

It'd been quite some time since I'd read shifter romance, or monster romance, or anything of the sort, but I'm really glad I applied for this ARC. It was a perfect reintroduction to this genre, and a very good experience overall.

It was a very quick read, started and finished in one sitting, but it was very fun. Well, maybe not fun, considering the past of our hybrid sweethearts, who went through literal hell and back, but I really enjoyed the plot, the characters, and I can't wait for the next book to come out. I feel like Rage is absolutely going to own me, and I'm going to need his journey ASAP. I'm also going to need one specific zoologist to be eaten, eviscerated, or anything else, really.

Anyway ! Prowl came out today, March 22nd, and it's available on KU, so I highly recommend you guys go grab it and give it a go ! 🔥

Well that was a wild ride.

It was completely different to anything I’ve read before, and not quite what I expected from the info graphic I saw, but I’m really glad I gave it a go. For me this was my introduction to sci-fi/monster smut and I can definitely say I enjoyed it.

The initial idea of the animal/human hybrid experiments is really interesting and I would have liked it to have developed into more of a story so I could have gotten a chance to get to know the characters more before the smut, however it is a good palette cleanser as it is. Great if you’re looking for something short but intense.

Prowl (MMC) has big possessive energy and Daff (FMC) is very determined to let him and the other hybrids know they are worthy of love and physical touch. There were a lot of complex feelings and themes that were touched on but never fully explored so I’m interested to see what happens in the rest of the series. This book ended on a “happy for now” note for our main couple and I am hoping they get their happily ever after by the end of the series (which I look forward to reading)!

Wow ! The cover is amazing !! It’s definitely one that captures your interest !

A sci-fi romance with a hybrid MMC in a secret military base and a signed NDA ? This is a premise of a great book !

Prowl and Daff had an intense chemistry and instant attraction. This is a fast paced sci-fi romance with a lot of past / present physical and mental pain and trauma . Hybrids who have been kept sheltered away learning that a future with a female is possible . I loved the possessiveness they both had for each other , both willing to fight for each other and hold their ground to secure their place together . A blossoming relationship but with watchful eyes , guards on a shoot to kill order and being monitored is no match when she had her human/lion hybrid as her protector

I can’t wait for the rest of the series ! The epilogue really has peaked my interest now !! What a little twist !

✨ Thank you Natalie Starkoss for the opportunity to read this arc in return for an honest review ✨

Was very lucky to receive an ARC of this and I finished it within 24hours 😅
It’s very much a ‘Romance in a science fiction storyline’ not a ‘Science Fiction with a romantic side quest’ and I really enjoyed it!
For those who enjoy the ‘insta love’ trope, this is the book for you!

I’d say this was a Level 2 on the spice. It definitely happened, but the scenes aren’t overly descriptive, didn’t carry on for pages on end and weren’t every chapter. Instead it was nicely balanced to the Plot and didn’t consume the character’s personality, turning them into mindless bang hungry creatures 😂

It’s a very fast paced book and does leave alot in the air. Alot of unanswered questions and loose ends.
It is Book One of what will be a 15 book series though so I’m sure that as each book comes through, everything will begin to pull together.

(There were some typing errors in the book, but i’ve no doubt these will be found and corrected well before release 😎)

I don’t normally hand out 5 stars, but this book deserves it. For a multitude of reasons.

**There are NO spoilers below**

This was my first “monster smut”. I put it “” because I don’t even know if that’s the appropriate term for it, but this was my first exposure to it. I couldn’t have picked a better one to introduce me to the subgenre!
Natalie is BLESSED when it comes to writing her characters. They’re all layered, they all have their own personalities, the bad guy isn’t a stereotype or trope - he’s just a gigantic asshole. And the way she addresses some heavy themes in the plot is just beautiful. The way PTSD is handled in this book made me tear up a couple of times, and it made me feel seen. Daff is truly a wonderful character and human, and Prowl is, ironically, so human.

I highly recommend it for readers who want a nice serving of plot with their spice. It’s spicy, but it’s definitely not wild. The spicy scenes were H O T though. Natalie is a hell of a talented writer.

I really enjoyed the characters, especially Daff and Mandy, because they are so passionate about helping the hybrids. It truly warmed my heart to see how they treated these characters as they should have been treated all along.

Then the chemistry and connection between Daff (our FMC) and Prowl (our MMC) was almost instant, yet it still provided a satisfying development in their relationship. I loved reading about them!

The only aspect of this book that I didn’t like was Dr. Helliot. You'll understand why once you read it; he is meant to be an unlikable character. What puzzled me was his significant influence over decisions. I recognize that he has certain expertise, but I couldn’t understand why no one else confronted him about his actions before Daff did. Honestly, I wished I could give him a good kick!

Other than that, this was a great read, and I am incredibly grateful to author Natalie Starkoss for the opportunity to read this book.

Firstly thank you so much for the ARC copy!

So, I've never read the sci-fi, monster, hybrid, romance type genre before, and I will say after having read Prowl I don't think the genre itself is for me. Having said that, I don't believe my personal tastes should reflect poorly on the novel or author!

If you enjoy sci-fi monster/hybrid romance this is definitely for you! I finished this book in one sitting and it definitely kept me engaged throughout! The pacing is really good, there's no unnecessary filler, and the concept is super interesting.

Weirdly, even though I don't THINK the genre is for me I do really want to read the follow ups about the other characters, which I think speaks to how engaging the world and characters are. I'm kind of super invested in the world, and would love for the characters to have a happy ending!

Another ARC that I loved and you just have to read!

This book is definitely different from my usual reads. This book was my first sci-fi romance and I loved it! The story line is so good! Going to a secret location and having to sign an NDA to bring home some money after the contract expires? Falling in love with a hydrid instead ??? Yeah, sign me up!!

Prowl’s possessiveness is >>>! Daff’s bravery and compassion for hybrid kind while also being fiesty and hilarious makes her one my favorite FMC!!

“If he doesn’t get his ass out of there and into the shared living zone with me, there’ll be hell to pay.” 🤣🫶🏼

Just finished the arc of this book and I kinda loved it? I love the human/animal hybrid concept and would totally love seeing it taken to a deeper level and into some sci-fi work. However, Prowl is, at its base level, a romance. It’s a story of redemption for a lost soul by means of a mate claim of a human woman by a lion hybrid male. It’s a short fast paced insta-love story about a feisty woman with a male who would do anything to keep her. The only reason I give it only 3 stars is because it lacked some depth and moved super fast, that being said— the vibes were there and I ate it up. Well done

I've never done this before, so bear with me. I read this as an ARC. I enjoyed the premise, and the characters are very likable (except for one jerk doctor). I enjoyed the story and appreciate the HFN ending. I'm looking forward to King and Rage's story. This book mostly revolves around Daff and Prowl getting to know one another and falling in love, and a littlebackgroundon the compound. I'd love more backstory on how the hybrids came into existence and were rescued. There's a little spice, but not too much. Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read, and I look forward to the next one.

This was SO COOL. I love the idea of gene splicing creating human-animal hybrids. It takes shifter romance and gives it a *scientific*…ish basis. Prowl was marvelous and I love Daff. I want to see more of the cubs and pretty much everyone except the “expert” vet/psychologist in desperate need of a suppository. There’s totally nothing going on there.
I am so excited to see where this series goes - SO many interesting characters already! PLUS this is all written by an Aussie so it’s even better in my opinion.

I wanted to like it—I really did.

The story intrigued me just because it’s different than many of the books that I read. But it just wasn’t my cup of tea 🫖

The only reasons its getting a slightly higher rating from me is that it’s got a fearless, mouthy FMC and a cinnamon roll MMC with “touch her and die” tension 🤌🏻 It’s INSTANT attraction and trust (more of an enemies-to-lovers girlie myself) BUT the honesty and compassion is touching. It’s super fast-paced and a quick read (finished in a few hours) so if you don’t like it—won’t really be a waste of your time 🙌🏻

I received an early copy but the reviews are of my own.

🦁 WHY WOULD I NOT READ IT KNOWING THE BLURB. Genetically modified hybrid trained for becoming a super soldier but is wasting away finds his calm, his lioness in a human girl. She saves him and now he claims her.

🦁 Prowl has this SHE.IS.MINE energy and I am all for it. Possessive, strong , will kiss the ground Daff walks on and is the ultimate definition of partner.

🦁 Daff is amazing, she is fearless, opinionated and compassionate towards the hybrids who aren't given same privileges as a human.

Conclusion: Go read it.

This book was lovely. The MMC starts off a smidge deranged and broken, but quickly becomes a lovable snuggle lion. The FMC has a heart of gold and fights for what she feels is right. Definitely a bunch of "you go girl!" moments throughout.
Their love is quick, sweet, and darling. They both needed and deserved the kind of love that the other provides.
I totally cracked up at the moments of humor added in here too. So funny!
My only "complaint" would be that I wanted more! There were pieces that I wanted more follow up on and I'm sure that'll be remedied in the following books.

What the f*** was in this book? Because I genuinely couldn’t put it down.

Prowl is literally the cutest male MMC ever, he is naturally protective and sweet.

Daff is the best FMC when it comes to advocating for those she cares about or is passionate about. She is fiercely loyal and has the biggest heart, and stands up for what she believes in.

Natalie knows how to write a very captivating story with amazing visualization, this story played like a movie in my head. She also knows how to write characters that you instantly feel for and I genuinely cannot wait for book 2 of the series.

This was such a unique new storyline, and I was hooked right from the beginning. The story was told beautifully so that you understood what was going on, and I'm so invested in all the characters.
The female friendship is done so well, and the nod to smut readers made me kick my feet.
I loved the character depth and how much it makes you root for and care for the future of the hybrids. I'm so excited to see where this world goes in the next books.

This book keeps you so interested that you don't even realize how much time has passed. I loved Prowl and Daff's story, and I didn't think it could get much better until the end of the book, and now I can't wait for book two. This series is going to be so good. This was such a fun read! I was already up late when I started the book and then I finished it before I went to sleep, I stayed up all night. I haven’t read much sci-fi but this was so good and creative. It had plot and romance and a little bit of spice. I loved both main characters. It had a happy ending, although I wish we got to enjoy it a little bit longer before the book ended. I received this book as an eARC and these were my thoughts on it.

OMG. I am INVESTED! it's been ages since I've been into a new book series and this is the real deal and I NEED more books ASAP!!! My only con is the length! we needed moreeee

The story revolves around a group of women contracted to spend two years on an island for a monetary payout. They are not warned or prepared for the fact that the island is full of hybrid men, genetically altered with beasts. We meet Daff, a woman seeking a way out of her trailer park and to save her family from poverty and Prowl, a lion hybrid losing his grip on his sanity.

THOUGHTS:

- I LOVE this world so much! the women are independent and have different personalities and it's fascinating to see all the interactions between them and the hybrids. I really can't wait to see the other couples emerge and specifically want to see king, drill, sarge and rage find their happiness!

- I really liked Daff as a character, she's sweet, kind with a backbone and genuinely wants to help and cares for Prowl. She sees his pain, makes him better and their chemistry is super hot IMO.

- Prowl is such an interesting male lead. He's almost feral, having spent his whole life experimented on and tortured. He's losing his grip on reality in his cell, content to beat himself to death when Daff enters his life. She sees him as a person worthy of care and love and he'll give anything to protect and worship her. He's super possessive but working through his issues to be the man she needs.

- the little cubs were so cute!!! I love how Mandy is so dedicated to their care and recovery.

- I really hope that Daff and Prowl can have the baby they want.
