Together We Rise

In the crumbling city of Pietalos, where corruption and poverty reign, the fires of revolution burn hotter each day. An oppressive government has bled its people dry for the benefit of the elite, but the citizens have had enough.

Eight lives—each scarred by loss, betrayal, and violence—intertwine as they fight for their own futures and that of the city.

Dhijs, a weary healer, joins forces with Tillia, a woman seeking both liberation for the people and personal revenge against her abusive husband, Captain Vaso. Zia, a factory worker turned reluctant leader, ignites the workers' rebellion, transforming protest into full-blown revolution. In the shadows, the cynical drug pusher King is forced to rethink his loyalties as riots consume the streets, while his rebellious young messenger Mal feeds critical information to the revolutionaries.

Meanwhile, Kishto, a guard disillusioned by the brutality of his comrades, defects to the cause after witnessing a brutal act of violence against a woman and child. General Leo, a former war hero haunted by guilt, secretly aids the rebellion. And Mydela, a scarred survivor and skilled assassin, takes on the city’s ultimate enemy—Canterbury, who hides a dark secret as a member of a malevolent race that seeks to subjugate the people.

As Pietalos teeters on the edge of a new era, these eight individuals must fight for justice, revenge, and redemption. But in a city where violence and betrayal lurk behind every corner, will their efforts be enough to topple the corrupt regime?

Together We Rise is a political fantasy story of revolution, vengeance, and hope, where the fate of a city rests on the courage of those willing to defy the odds and reclaim their future.

I devoured this so quickly. It gave me big Six of Crows X slight Game of Thrones (Kings Landing specifically) vibes. From the get go you’re thrown into the action and the fast pacing remains throughout.

Each chapter is the pov of a different character in the face of one event - and each character also has their own music/theme tune which as an immersive reader I absolutely loved. Little Mal and Tillia have stolen my heart!! 🥺🫶

With this being such a short book I was abit concerned about how it would all fit in and play out - but it is written perfectly, with background context only given as and when you need it. The fantasy aspect was honestly unexpected and amazing, I only wish it had been introduced sooner in the book!!

This is obviously heavily political and unfortunately the events aren’t far removed from everyday life for a lot of people, especially at the moment😬 but it made me feel SO hopeful, and that’s what people need rn 👏👏

Thank you Richie for the opportunity to read and review this book!!

⭐⭐⭐.25 | 3.25 stars rounded down

Triggers: many mentions of r*pe, extreme violence

This an immersive, gritty, quick novella for fans of dark dystopia. The narrator did a great job and I found it easy to follow each character and keep track of what was going on, even in the very fast pace and choas of the revolution. I appreciated the hopeful tone of the story, even in the midst of terror.

I would have loved to see slightly more complex characters who are not simply good or simply bad and more fantasy elements incorporated into the story from the beginning.

This novella is also much more violent than I expected, which caught me off guard - but that is likely just a "me" thing.

Thank you to the author for the ALC in exchange for my honest review!

4 ⭐️ Corrupt government, low fantasy, and a rebellion on the rise. There was so many parts in this book that were relatable at this time in life. NO KINGS 🚫👑

I truly could’ve highlighted the whole book at this point… I really liked how every chapter gave you perspective on a different person. Really gives you insight on how the government affects different types of people. I really appreciate the way the female characters were written, the author did good with badass FMCs. 👏🏼

This is a short very political read but I think it could be very thought provoking read for everyone. Never forget… TOGETHER WE RISE ✊🏼

This novel immerses us in a world where workers, exhausted by unbearable working conditions, rise up to overthrow the ruling power. While this classic theme recalls works like Germinal by Émile Zola, its treatment here differs by offering a more hopeful conclusion, envisioning a brighter future. However, this attempt at originality suffers from several missteps that weaken its overall impact.

On the positive side, the book stands out for its female characters, remarkable for their courage and resilience. These figures embody a strong sense of humanity, navigating a brutal world ruled by violence and bloodshed. Their strength serves as a unifying thread throughout the story, adding emotional depth to an often harsh narrative.

Another noteworthy feature is the playlist associated with each character. This bold narrative choice adds an immersive dimension, with each song reflecting the emotions or dilemmas of the protagonists. It deepens the reader’s understanding of their complexity while offering a richer sensory experience.

Despite these strengths, the story suffers from inconsistencies and a lack of clarity in its structure. Divided into eight chapters, each introducing a new character without revisiting the previous ones, the book struggles to maintain a sense of continuity. This fragmented structure isolates the characters, making it difficult for the reader to form a genuine connection with them.

The final chapter amplifies this issue by introducing Mydela, an assassin from the "Magpie" guild, and Canterbury, an enigmatic figure with magical powers. This abrupt shift into fantasy, entirely absent from earlier chapters, feels like stepping into an entirely different story. If these supernatural elements had been introduced earlier, they could have enriched the universe while maintaining narrative coherence. As it stands, they confuse rather than captivate.

Finally, some key aspects of the story remain vague, such as the unexplained disappearance of Pietalos’ wealthy residents when the revolutionaries invade their city, or the unclear depiction of the fireball explosions.

In summary, this novel combines promising ideas with ambitious intent, but its execution is uneven. With its memorable characters, hopeful message, and original musical approach, it deserves attention. However, its inconsistencies and lack of narrative fluidity prevent it from achieving the depth it seems to aspire to. A novel that captivates at times but ultimately leaves an unfinished impression.

'Together We Rise' is a fantastic and often sobering look at what is at the heart of every story. People. People that feel alive, real and relatable. They are not just good or bad, they are every shade in between. And it is through these people that this story comes to life.

The story takes place in the city of Peitalos and examines how far people can be pushed until enough is enough and the consequences of taking a stand. What Billing has done is create a living, breathing city with so many threads and events that mirror or take inspiration from our own messed up world that you immediately care for these people and their struggles. It is like looking at the real world through a fantasy lense. It makes you think, question and above all, feel.

'Together We Rise' follows eight different viewpoints on life through a corrupt, oppressive and quite frankly awful state of a city. It's a city that has trampled on the rights of the people until they are barely hanging on, many with nothing left. It delves into these eight lives, showcasing vastly different circumstances, motivations and experiences and how they are affected by the wave of rebellion that crashes through Peitalos.

I don't want to say too much about these characters as I feel they are best experienced firsthand but I can say that each character deserves to have their story told. No character feels like filler, all play their parts and impact the story in meaningful ways.

Billing does not shy away from the reality of what a rebellion entails and how experiences can lead to people making choices you may never expect. The brutality of some characters actions only adds to the humanity and realness of them. It is not violence for the sake of it. When you look at what they have been through, you may not agree but you certainly understand.

An extra dimension through this story is the brilliant accompanying soundtrack. Each character has their own theme song that highlights their emotions as you read. I found myself playing these themes on repeat as I read their chapters. It really adds an extra depth to the story which I really enjoyed.

This book isn't just for fantasy lovers. It is for to anyone craving an emotional, impactful and relatable story about people. I would highly recommend you give it a go!

Together We Rise throws you straight into a crumbling city: a world of corruption, poverty, and rebellion that feels both epic and eerily familiar. The story unfolds through multiple POVs, each offering a glimpse into different corners of a revolution: from weary workers and reluctant leaders to assassins, soldiers, and spies.

The pacing is fast and the tone immersive, you’re dropped right into the chaos from page one. Each chapter focuses on a new character facing the same uprising from a unique angle, and the added touch of individual theme music for every POV gives the story a cinematic, almost multimedia feel.

I especially loved how Billing wrote his female characters: strong, resilient, and deeply human. The world feels gritty and lived-in, with Six of Crows meets Game of Thrones energy.

This mix of political intrigue, emotional depth, and unexpected hope makes for a powerful read.. one that feels timely and meaningful in today’s world.

What to Expect:
Political fantasy & revolution
Multi-POV storytelling
Character playlists
Gritty worldbuilding
Hope and resilience amid chaos

A bold and fast-paced story about courage, rebellion, and the power of ordinary people standing up to corruption.

Billing is not only a talented writer, he also composed the music for this book. At the start of each chapter, the main character has their own theme music, which helped bring the story to life by heightening the tension and emotion in every scene. I've never read a book with it's own soundtrack, also written by the author, and I absolutely love the idea and experience.

The citizens of Pietalos are fed up with their corrupt government and have decided to fight back. I enjoyed the fast pacing, strong female characters, and the fantasy elements toward the end were an intriguing and unexpected twist.

There is graphic violence and strong language, so be mindful if those elements are a concern. This is an action packed read that blends political rebellion with a touch of fantasy, strong female characters, and a great soundtrack to go with it.

Thank you to Richie Billing for the opportunity to read and review this book

Warnings: severe swearing - some graphic descriptions - talk of rapes

This political grimdark urban fantasy was packed with action. I couldn't tell it was a fantasy world, until toward the end when it started talking about kingdoms. Before that it seemed like it could've been happening anywhere. I liked that each chapter featured a different character, but their roles in the revolution intertwined, and we got to see how. The evil "Shadow looking over them all" was something I didn't see coming!

As the people in the city of Pietalos get more restless and fed up with the government they decide to revolt. What starts as a tragedy in a factory, it slowly builds momentum in the people to come together. When all the pieces come together, it's a magnificent show of resilience in the face of corruption.

While I thought the story was well thought out, the excessive swearing and lack of world building was a drawback for me.

3.5 - Together we rise is a novella that surrounds a cast of characters all playing a part in a rising revolution sweeping their city. Tired of corruption and poverty, the people have had enough. After a spark, people have rallied together to finally overthrow their corrupt government once and for all.

My favorite part of this story is the group of characters. We see many different types of people who all play a part in this revolution, and to see their stories tie together in such a satisfying way made this story quite enjoyable. I wasn’t sure how this read would go since it’s short, but I think it did pretty well for a novella. You were given just the right amount of context and world building to understand the revolution and why the characters were driven to do the things they did. My only wish is that the fantasy element was introduced sooner in the story instead of closer to the end. I also wish the pacing was a little different, but regardless, this story felt necessary in times such as these.

Thank you Richie Billing for letting me review your book!

This short novella is quite an impactful story (and a quick read) for people who enjoy found family, revolutions, and payback. Each chapter introduces you to a new person and the situation they’re in Pietalos, but their stories are more connected than you think.

Their government is corrupted. The people have had enough. Is violence the answer? What about revenge and seeking justice?

The eight individuals you read about question all of that and more as they fight for a brighter future. While reading the novella, I couldn’t help but compare this dynamic to the Six of Crows and the story of Les Miserables. I had to remind myself multiple times this was not a story set in Ketterdam with Kaz leading a revolution against the government NOR a French Revolution, but that in itself shows how much I was enjoying this novella.

Please note this story is very gruesome and uses vulgar language throughout the book. It’s a bit different compared to the books I normally read, but it’s nice to not have a filter over the things that occur and is said in the book.

Thank you, Richie Billing, for sending me a digital copy of your book and letting me listen to the audiobook.

I was sent this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Together We Rise is a story that will resonate with a lot of people, and it feels incredibly relevant to our time. It's told in a unique format- 8 chapters from 8 points of view, each from someone else involved in the revolution. I enjoyed the unique style, but I do think the character development suffered a little as a result; it was difficult to connect with characters in such a short amount of time.

The writing is good, with descriptions that occasionally made my stomach turn, and the audiobook narrator does an excellent job with character voice and emotion.

Overall, I think Together We Rise is good, but I don't think it's for me personally. I would definitely recommend this, especially to the men in my life, but it's not the kind of book I tend to reach for. I don't think that's a bad thing, just a matter of personal preference.

If you're looking for a cool book to get for your dad, brother, or boyfriend, though, I think this might be a good one (especially if you want to subtly woke-ify your dad).

This book is dark but has a glimmer of hope. This is a fantasy, but the magic is not dominant until toward the end. Set in the city of Pietalos, Billing does a great job of world-building. Each chapter features a different main character to push the story arc along. At times the characters seem to face insurmountable odds. Shadow appears as a leader in several of the chapters. There are political undertones as well.
A warning: there is violence and foul language if you are sensitive to that.

Okay, so grab your notepads and add this to your TBR NOW, BECAUSE… Together We Rise is an absolute 5/5 masterpiece. I was hooked from the very first page. I literally DEVOURED it in ONE sitting and I was in the worst book slump. So trust me when I say that this book is hauntingly addictive.

The plot, the characters, the world-building - everything was executed flawlessly.
This book dives into the deep corrupt system of Pietalos, and is written with such precision and intensity that I couldn't tear myself away.

Dhijs instantly became my favorite closely followed by Kishto - my God, that chapter had me completely in it's grip. There were moments that genuinely had me sobbing and screaming in my pillow, and I keep saying this but the writing deserves applause again and again.

The FMC? HOLY MOLY; she's beyond badass. I know we all love a good strong FMC and believe me Mr. Billing has delivered that.

There was a moment I wanted to reach into the book and shake Captain Vaso with a needle-studded belt. (seriously, rage central) And the ending? I was utterly floored, totally unexpected. I'm a bit worried about Mydela though cuz…YOU KNOW, you better not!

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a dystopian novel this much . The dialogues were chef's kiss perfection. This book gave me major Hunger Games x Red Queen vibes.

And the only thing that left me in agony was how short it was, I need a sequel yesterday!

Need an amazingly immersive quick read? Boom this book, I feel like if you are someone who enjoys a more immersive experience this’ll be a good book for you.
I went into this book blind and was surprised how much I enjoyed it by the end of it all. The political world building is very well done and I enjoyed each character getting the spotlight of their own chapters. The book surprisingly tied up nicely as well! Definitely a book to read!

Thank you to the author for this ALC in exchange for my review!

This was a super gritty and dark fantasy novel with major themes of unionizing workers and rebelling against corrupt governments.

I thought the narrator did a great job and brought a lot of life to the story. I probably wasn’t the exact right reader for this one because I was hoping for more fantasy throughout and I had a little trouble connecting to it… but I appreciate the chance to explore a new-to-me-author!

A really captivating and interesting book for sure!
Maybe not 100% my style (too much death) but I still liked it!

Each chapter is seen from a different characters perspective, which in the beginning I found confusing but later on ended up liking really much.
I love the story and the ”purpose” of the book, stand up for yourself.

The chapters was a bit too long imo, I know each character just got one chapter and to fit everything in it has to be long, but they could have gotten 2 chapters each or something. Some of the chapters were 30 minutes long (with my reading speed).

Thank you Richie for sending me a copy of this book! Loved the experience!

This book was set in the crumbling city of Pietalos during the revolution. You get to know the different characters and get an insight into each of their own stories. I loved that each character had their own song at the start of each chapter, which makes Richie a very unique author indeed.

Till was my favourite character as she fought strongly for the people of Tervia, but also got her own personal revenge against her abusive husband, Vaso.

Together We Rise is a story about power, hope, and strength. The people unite in a world of injustice. This was a very gripping read, and I couldn't put the book down once I had started. Thankyou for this very gripping, powerful and wonderful story!

Disclosure: Richie sent me a copy so I could share it on Goodreads. I read it without having what Richie wrote. And as it turns out, I'm particularly unfound of dystopian and fantasy novels, so this book didn't stand much of a chance. That being said, the book is interesting. And when it segued into a fantasy, I was surprised. For me, that's to say that it kept me engaged. Not an easy feat for a genre that's far from my favorite.

A thoroughly enjoyable tale from Richie’s Tervia world. Well thought out and fast paced the vast majority of the book takes place during a city revolt. The action/fight sequences are very well described and there are characters that you will care about and root for. Was pleased to see a small tie in to his short story the Pigeon Catchers which is my favourite of Ritchies short stories. Check that out also.

Those book points out the obvious: "Evil is like the tide. It may retreat, but it’s always there, inching closer."

The author presents a world where you can truly see and feel the downtrodden. It is a fitting allegory to many of the situations relevant to the world today. A disparate group comes together for action. There is intrigue and mystery in how everything comes together. Some cruelty that is too much to bear may turn some folks off, but it's part of the build of the consensus. But the people will no longer take the injustice. The reveal of the protagonist is held for maximum impact.

A fitting symbol from the book is: A white and black bird to represent the balance between Life and the Nothingness.

2.5 stars, recieved from an Arc

In the city of Pietalos, where corruption and poverty reign, the fires of revolution burn hotter each day. An oppressive government has bled its people dry for the benefit of the elite, but the citizens have had enough. Eight lives—each scarred by loss, betrayal, and violence—intertwine as they fight for their own futures and that of the city.

If only they really did intertwine.

There are interesting features here, and Richie Billings takes it out of the normal confort zone by utilising a soundtrack (scannable by QR code). This adds a unique flare, but just like maps, created languages, etc., it only goes so far to hide issues in a manuscript. And while there is quite a good bit of wonderful prose in this book, my problem with Together we Rise, is that it feels like it tries too hard to be something it is not, as if ideas were thrown together to make some sort of writing Paella.

Billing's characters fail to strike a chord, and the dialogue is rather underdeveloped. There were many times everything felt out of place, the reactions of characters disjointed, distanced from any sort of reality. Further harmed, strangely, by bouts of the aforementioned wonderful prose and scene setting. Harmed, because the writing did nto seem to match the mood of the particular character I was following.

Which, brings us to the topic of the overall presentation. There are very few errors, and the overall editing is well-done. Yet, we also have quite a bit of questionable plotting. The division of the chapters into some sort of mini-stories can work if there seemed to be an overarching line pulling things together. However, the narrative is rather disjointed, and the ultimate picture Billing's was trying to portray, a muddle. Fantasy elements also were thrown in one of the last chapters which didn't help.

Taken as a whole, complete novel or novella, Together we Rise simply falls flat. However, there are bouts of genuinely good writing, and character concepts that can work, if given more time to stew.

thank you to the author for gifting me an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

this was a really fast paced novella that really does not waste any time and jumps straight into the action. right from the get go, we are powering through at full speed and just keeps going and going. however, i also felt like because of that, the story moves a little too quickly at times.

the jumping from one character to the next oftentimes felt abrupt, possibly due to the novella's length, and that means that characters end up feeling flat and one-dimensional. there just wasn't enough room or time to really get to know them or become invested.

the overall vibe of this novella is very reminiscent of classic dystopian novels like 1984 or animal farm. i do admire the ambition and while i felt like the ideas/themes/message was there, it doesn't quite reach the same level of depth or impact.

what i did appreciate was the fact that this novella does not shy away from violence at all, which makes complete sense within the context of the world. however, there are moments where it does feel excessive and starts to lose its shock factor.

the final chapter also introduced a lot of new fantastical elements that just felt really out of place because of how late into the story they were brought in.

this is definitely a story with a lot of potential that i personally think might have worked better as a full-length novel. as a novella, it just feels a bit too ambitious, but was an interesting and thought-provoking read nonetheless

Richie Billing writes an intriguing dark tale with Together We Rise

In Together We Rise, the reader is brought to the city of Pietalous, a place that you wouldn't want to be in the dark or even during the day. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much, that I have now followed the author and look for more books to read. Richie Billing brings the readers into the lives of a few main characters, each is crucial in the upcoming, rising against the city and its corruption. This is a riveting story that shows the underbelly of the inside of this town, and some, namely Dhijs, Zia, and Tillia, are looking to make this town have a better future. Each character has his or her purpose and backstory, but what I like about the story with so many moving parts, is that they are all necessary and it is not overwhelming to follow each character, and how they unite for a better tomorrow. It's about gathering revolutionaries for a greater good and disrupt the corrupt nightmare of a government. Together We Rise is unpredictable, with twists to the end. It's a story that the reader can relate to, no matter when they read this story. Together We Rise is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

From the moment I picked this book up, I was utterly consumed. Billing has an exceptional way with words and I loved every minute of his story telling. I really liked the way this book was split between characters, each chapter titled after and following a new character up until the end - I thought this was such a unique way to structure the story and I loved it. The beginning of this story immediately envelopes you in this sense of mystery that kept me interested throughout.

This is a sort of high fantasy with heavy political intrigue and a violent revolution against a corrupt and vicious government. I love a good political book and I really enjoyed this aspect, a fascist government designed to control and abuse its citizens who is then taken down by the people it has beaten and broken for decades. I enjoyed each character. I really loved how Shadow is shrouded in mystery, I love her sense of justice, how she vows to enact vengeance for herself and for every other soul who calls Pietalos home.

The last few chapters were not at all what I was expecting. I loved how the story turned to a more supernatural approach, introducing a few new characters and a reasoning behind what has happened in this city. It gives it more of a fantasy feel, sets a good scene for any future books in the same universe and leaves you with some vague idea and expectation on what's to come. I also really loved how the magpie was depicted through the story and how in the end, there is a meaning for it.

I read an ARC copy of this book.

Most of us can relate to a form of oppression, even if we have not directly been oppressed. There's a strong thread of social commentary throughout the book. This is a very character driven book which slowed down the plot at times.

Richie utilises character behaviours and reflection to show the degeneration of the society very well. Working the title in to the narrative serves to remind the reader of the core plot and message of the story.

I found the amount of characters a bit overwhelming and I wasn't able to relate to any of the characters in a way that made me invest emotionally in what was going to happen to them. There was too much reliance on personal loss and revenge as the motivation for the actions taken by the characters. I believe this was done to amplify the dystopian aspect of the plot.

I liked the way the characters were being brought together in the second half of the book where the plot threads also starting coming together.

There's a good balance of male and female characters on the whole, though a couple did slip into stereotypes. None of the characters were dominant forces in the narrative which worked well.

A highly enjoyable and fast-paced short read.

The titular uprising is explored through a different viewpoint in every chapter, a structure that worked well for me.

The character theme tunes were a bonus, although I found listening to the dramatic music whilst actually reading too much of a distraction, particularly where the opening scene of the chapter was a quiet conversation or sneaking about!

This isn't a tale with great subtlety or nuance, and I wasn't so keen on the occasional long monologues, but this didn't mar a novella that was superbly readable, with strong world-building and great characters whose motivations were easy to understand - and often sympathise with, and all too much relevance to the Real World.

Thank you to the author for a copy of the book for an honest review!

A great fast-paced political urban fantasy where each chapter has a different POV, this kept the perspective fresh and interesting. They also had their own soundtrack per chapter which is such a unique immersive touch. The action starts as soon as you begin reading so it gets right to it!

The content is very gritty and intense as it is set in the midst of an uprising, with strong language and violent scenes. The plotting was well thought out and very relevant right now… I found it very empowering.

Only drawback for me was that the fantasy element of the plot came up very near the end so was unexpected, wish there’d been a bit more since the book is short!

This was a gripping, character-driven fantasy novella that I think fans of Six of Crows (and maybe even Game of Thrones) would appreciate. We follow multiple perspectives and see how ordinary people are led to start a revolution through collective strength after enduring oppression and corruption.
The soundtrack that comes with this was simply amazing and I personally haven't seen this done before. I was also able to listen to the audiobook which was amazing! Robin Coppock does the narration and does a great job at making every character (even side characters) feel distinct. Overall, this was an incredibly immersive reading experience.

What a great read!! Fantastic characters in a well built world that is very well written and has something for everyone. It can be read as an enjoyable fictional book or you can look deeper and see more to it that I won't spoil for you.
