Chelan is a brilliant young woman, an aeronautics engineer who dreams of one day soaring towards the stars in a craft of her own design. But, while on vacation, she is badly injured during a bizarre encounter with menacing strangers. Awakening, she finds herself held captive aboard the alien battleship RIBUS 7. Convinced at first that she is the victim of an elaborate hoax, the nightmare soon becomes all too real.

Before her stands the Iceanean Overlord, Korba, an ebony-clad god of war, a cunning predator, and a finely honed killer. As Commander of RIBUS 7, his mission is to eradicate all aliens, Chelan included. Yet one look at the exotic beauty smuggled aboard his ship stays his hand.

Struggling against her growing attraction to her captor, Chelan clings to her Earthly values like a shield. But in a culture where the men and women pursue the pleasures of the flesh with a passion and a skill equal to that of the kill, Chelan finds herself awash in a sea of temptation at every turn. Korba himself yearns for her, but their love is forbidden by all that governs his culture. To claim her as his own is to risk all…but it’s a risk he hungers to take.

Tedious, boring, no action for 85% CLIFFHANGER tease!!!
The cover is incredibly misleading.
I saw it and thought: "Mars needs women, sweet!"

So wrong.

If you enjoy strong heroines, stay away from this story.
* However, if you are actually going to read this book after reading my review - seriously, please start a tally on how many times Chelan weeps/tears up/cries/wails/collapses/goes-catatonic in this book.

This is a long book about Mary Sue Chelan who is super-duper special brilliant, studies everything to the Nth degree, learns languages in a snap, is beautiful but has no self esteem or confidence.

Mary Sue Chelan feels oppressed by her parents who are smothering her in their high expectation of her life after she has just attained her PhD in aeronautics.
So to celebrate, she gives herself some needed 'space' from her parents & goes camping out in the wilderness she's not familiar with.
(BTW - I never got into her character despite very good writing)

Chelan gets kidnapped by aliens doing repairs to their aircraft on this primitive world. One of the aliens is an anthropologist and wants to have her as a sample of 'intelligent' life from this planet. She tries to fight, runs, falls only to hit her head in a near fatal wound....so the aliens (that are immediately taken with her delicate beauty) take her onto their battle-cruiser, RIBUS 7.

The doctor patches her up and all the aliens agree that they shouldn't have brought her on-board.
This battle-cruiser is an alien free zone and bringing an alien into it is a big No-No.
However, every officer that comes into the medical bay instantly falls under the spell of her unconsious delicate beauty.
Eventually the top-dog Overlord, Korba stomps in to tear some asses up and kill the alien they've brought about...until he sees her and falls for her delicate alien beauty.
It's not described as insta-lust, they just want to care for and protect her.

These aliens (Iceaneans - from the cold planet Iceanea) have plenty of their own women, as well as genetic breeding programs which prohibit them from breeding with lesser genetic material.

I won't go into much more of the plot or setting because they were repetitive as hell to me.

There are two Battle cruisers, RIBUS 7 & RIBUS 8. There are two Battle Commanders for each ship.
Korba is the commander for RIBUS 7 and is actually over all the other commanders, or 'The Overlord'.
Dar is the Commander of RIBUS 8 and Korba's best friend.

The setting for 95% of this book is in one of the two commander's suites. That got old.
You don't see much as the reader...you only learn things as Chelan reads about them on the computer, or one of the men thinks about them.
Like how their battle gear cloth is made. I spent over 1.5 pages reading about where the lizard lives and how it makes it's nests out of this great material they create, and everything this material is good for....(banging head on desk)

There was a LOT of that.
I know a lot of people enjoy all the details. I know the author probably put a lot of effort into these descriptions and scenes....but I have to say that it did nothing for me except make me want to skim more. Seriously, I didn't see that information's impact on the plot.
I can't complain about how much time the author spent talking about aeronautics because I skimmed that part.

I did unfortunately read through the breeding/Genetic lines of the Empire...which read like the "Adam begat Esau, who begat Jim, who begat Ted" part of the Bible.
(Yes, I realize my Biblical example is incorrect)

Every male that lays eyes on Chelan wants her. Chelan only wants Korba...until they have a misunderstanding and then she wants others.
But it doesn't matter because the Iceanean culture is not monogomous. Chelan has emotional hang up over her human hangups with monogamy. It causes tears and breakdowns.
Chelan actually cries and freaks out constantly which really got on my last damn nerve.
I was rooting for her suicide attempt to work at one point because I felt she had earned it.

There was no real action to speak of. Except for a little lead up to Korba leaving to go battle them away from the RIBUS battle cruisers. The Empire (of which the Iceaneans are the muscle) is being undermined by a group calling itself R.O.P.E. - Korba takes half a million troops to go put them down, and the reader gets to see very little of that. One chapter actually. The rest of the time, the warriors discuss it in front of Chelan.

There were two major plot points that NEVER were answered in this book and I assume at least one of them will be addressed in the sequel. [grumble]
The first point that I was actually looking forward to - was how the Emperor would react to Chelan.
(Everyone was scared the Emperor would come down on/exile/etc whoever ended up with Chelan.)

Second point was this big celebration party for winning the battle against ROPE - Chelan was to be presented as the mate to [you figure it out].

But the story never ever got around to covering those.

Sex? HA! Sex doesn't occur until the 83% mark.
Chelan was raped. As it turns out, she was raped at a very young age by her doctor. (But you don't find this out until near the end)
So she is massively afraid of the penis. Lots of crying after minimal make out sessions included in the story. It isn't until 83% that Chelan finally hooks up. That hookup doesn't work out so well...but they try again and there's some decent steamyness around the 95% mark...but by then I was so annoyed that I'd read this whole thing that I was skimming.

The good - The author writes quite well.
The bad - holy shit this was just drama-DRAMA-drama. over and over with no real payoff until the very end - and only then it was partial.

Recommended - as filler only.

considering how long the book was it left out some of the more important details that readers would be interested in: the main character spent so little time with the one that she ended up with that it is hard to see how/why she loved him. She spent much more time and sensual scenes with two other male characters; (2) it ended rather abruptly; the reader never gets to see when the protagonist , who spent over 6,000 Kindle version pages sequestered in one or two rooms, is finally introduced to the Overlord's ship full of warriors; (3) the world-building is all based on what other characters mention or what the heroine reads. We have all of these pages, a huge battle cruiser filled with a half million or more and we see very little of it.
While the heroine is intellectual and over time gains physical skills, she is not strong emotionally. In a time where strong female characters are more the norm than the exception, this protagonist is distressingly weak, fearful and passive (she did suffer a childhood trauma). She reminded me more of the heroines of the 70's and the 80's than one of the 21st century.
There were many pages that described geology and fighter jets (no, she never gets in one) than are needed to make the points of why they were mentioned in the first place.
The book is very long and I stuck with it because I kept waiting to see whth whom she would wound up with (or maybe several whoms because it seemed that she was heading for a menage relationship) and I kept waiting for her to woman-up.
Nothing in the blurb said that this would be a serial, and at over 6,000 pages all questions should have been answered, but as I stated earlier, it ended abruptly without including the type of scenes that would have made the book much more satisfying, so this makes it read like a serial. I understand that this is the first book published by the author and it shows, however, overall, it was worth reading and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see if there is more character growth and to finally see what the Empire, the Emperor Ticees, and the world of the Iceanea are like.

Drama started out as fun, but then, as the book went on (and on), it was just too-o-o-o much soap opera drama. The writing was fine, though the dialogue was somewhat stilted. Which brings me to my main point: the heroine was an indecisive, immature, manipulative, hypocritical, fickle tease, and I DESPISED her.

I saw other reviewers saying that the main character was deeply irritating, and I thought "I can handle that". I was wrong. The heroine throws tears and hysterics and comatose states whenever any of her numerous beaus looks at/mentions ever in the past having sex with another woman, while she herself has a deep need to kiss and fondle multiple male partners - they all tolerate it completely, of course.

And then she tries to kill herself? 5 seconds later she is rescued and the incident is never mentioned again. I mean what crackpot tries to kill herself and all the hero can say is along the lines of "I'm sorry I was mean, this is all my fault"?????

I can't help but conclude that an author who thinks any of these suicide attempts, hissy fits, and multiple one-sided relationships, along with a fantasy of complete sexual irresistibility, must herself have a borderline personality disorder. Look it up.

3.5 stars.

I really love the fact that it was a very good length book - 600+ pages, I believe. I just really wanted a sci-fi adventure and I got it. Somewhat.

Some problems with the books. She built this AWESOME relationship.... but not with the hero himself. With the hero, it was like insta-love. Which was very disappointing.

It left off in an awkward spot. I can't wait for the 2nd book because it is a very interesting book. I just wish the plot and the direction the author went in was a bit different. We end up loving the hero's friends and comrades rather him. So yeah.

There was TONS of overwhelming information about how things work in space vs. Earth and I didn't really understand most of it, BUT I like that the details are there because it just makes it seem more well thought out (the world building).

It's not my favorite because there are just so many kinks that needs to be worked out but damn, it's just such a nice length sci-fi book and there's not many out there.

Ribus-7 is an absolutely amazing book! It is hundreds of pages long and I did not see one error. The research that had to go into this book related to topography and aeronautics alone is astounding. The romance(s) are deeply felt and allowed to progress and grow. I have come to love and become invested in these characters. I so love Fremma, Dar, Korba, Stose, Chelan,Tarn and the rest of the crew. I want everyone to have a HEA. We will have to see what Shae's other books bring us. The world building is fantastic, the character development flawless, as is the writing. I was never bored and remained glued to my kindle, very unhappy when the book ended. I so wanted to learn even more about these characters and the Empire. Chelan is an American who is out camping and inadvertently comes upon aliens repairing their aircraft. An accident occurs and Chelan is transported to Ribus-7 where all the fun begins. The main Warlord who is the Empire's Overlord, Korba, takes an interest in her but circumstances do not allow their continued interaction. An intergalactic conflict becomes a terrifying reality for the crews of Ribus 7 and 8. Yes, there are more of these huge battle cruisers. While Korba is away fighting, Chelan is befriended by another Warlord, Dar and Korba's Head of Security, Fremma. I love these two men, hardened warriors yet kind and gentle. The culture in this Empire is very different from earth and it is enthralling to watch Chelan try to come to terms with this related to her experiences on Earth. There is so much more to the story but you need to read it and experience it for yourself. I very highly recommend this book for Sci-fi and romance lovers and all readers who enjoy an extremely well-written space opera. It is a rarity that we come across a gem like Ribus-7 and an author like Shae Mills! I cannot wait for more and book 2 is on the way! Thank you, Shae, for an incredible escape into another reality! I will be rereading this book again and again!

Oh. My. Ever. Lovin'. Stars. There are no words to fully express how awful I found this book. Well there are, but they aren't fit for my mind, let alone mixed company. Y'all...I totally agree with the other reviewers that low starred this one. The blurb sounded great! I loved this premise! But for the love...as much as this author can actually write (really, she can, and it was very easy to read), the characters just couldn't come off the page. I am struggling just to get as far as I've gotten. I'm really wanted to like this book but I can't stand Chelan as the heroine. And for some strong willed, strong minded, alpha males that hate "aliens", all the Heroes just seem to fall all over Chelan. FOR NO APPARENT REASON!! Seriously. What's the draw? I can't anymore. I just can't.

I'm calling it. Place of DNF: 40%.

I could have forgiven the writing but for the characters being everything from a genius, alien, perfectly beautiful, rocket scientist....just left out president and fire fighter.

Read like a bad online roleplayers post. The characters knew everything and the girl was beautiful even with her extra weight that she would lose and build a new spaceship because she was a genius everyone said and it showed but of course she was shy and..and..and...also competed in self defense classes and and. This is wrote this way on purpose because it is how it read. Unfortunately as much as I tried it was hard to get past the multi one liners and know all and be all the characters were within the first 5 pages.

RIBUS 7

Wow. Impressive world building as well as characters...
I picked this up originally as a kindle unlimited read, but I'll be going back to purchase this one. I know that it's one I'll want to read again later. And I am looking forward to devouring the next book in the series as well.
I think I would classify this as sci-fi more than romance though, just sayin'.
There are a few minor editing mistakes here and there, but they don't detract from the flow of the story and not as many as I expected for a novel of this length either.
Fair warning... everything is not wrapped up when this one ends, but I would say that it doesn't leave you completely hanging at the end either.

Not a genre I usually read, but I loved this story of an Earth woman, Chelan, who is taken by aliens of Iceania and must learn to adapt to their ways. The Iceanians also find they must change their behavior to accommodate the more vulnerable human. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the Iceanians, their history and their way of living. I am looking forward to the second book in the series!

I was done with this book after the heroine professed her love to a guy she didn't even know short of a couple of conversations and a heated make-out session. I was like, wait, what? What just happened? Chelan, the heroine, keeps being described of as 'brilliant' but other than her technical knowledge as an aeronautics engineer, that's about as far as her brilliance goes. This chick 'checked out' in the beginning, too freaked out about being kidnapped that she almost killed herself with starvation and listlessness. Then she was so physically weak for a good chunk of the first and second part of the books that I wanted to shake her and tell her to take some pain killers and stop spending so much time asleep. If that wasn't enough, she almost died from yet another sickness before Korba could get to her-again.

But that wasn't before she accused him of trying to rape her as she so stoically goaded him into doing it by declaring, "I've been raped before!'. She wore her rape like a badge of honor, embracing the victim she was instead of the survivor she could've been. I'm not insensitive to rape, but when authors approach it in fiction-especially romantic fiction or erotica-i expect them to go one of three ways:
1-heroine allows her rape to dictate her behavior towards all men in the future and cowers in fear, never learning to cope or allow a happy/healthy sexual experience to replace it
2-heroine copes, moves on, and allows a man of worth to be with her, and they fight her demons side by side
3-heroine tries to cope, fails, sees the face and actions of her abuser in every man she encounters and punishes them since she can't punish anyone else (in turn abusing them), realizing almost too late that she was wrong, feeling bad about it, and trying, semi-successfully, to put it behind her.

Chelan was somewhere between 1 and 3. She toyed with several different guys' hearts and teased them mercilessly with va-j-j that they could pant after but not touch, and she confessed her love for them as if it were as interchangeable as a styrofoam cup. I lost all respect for her when she spent 90% of the book in a sickbed, and the other 10% teasing good men who deserved better. Also, I kept hoping for Korba to come back into the picture and the suspense almost killed me until she started screwing around with the other guys even though her heart 'belonged' to Korba. After that, I didn't look for Korba anymore.

Author spent way too much time describing the world when she should've focused on the character relationships and dialogue. Too much inner dialogue lacks action and growth between characters, especially if the person's mind isn't where you'd want to be. And Chelan's thoughts on everything were worth less than a box of rocks.

I despise weak women in fiction and Chelan had to be the dullest, weakest woman I'd ever read about.
I heard book 2 was better, so I'll give that one a shot if the reviews are good.

I will justify my rating in a few, well placed, and phrased sentences:

If you hate whinny, crybaby, and an embarrassment to the female gender heroines, stay away from this book (I hate them and this is my punishment)

If you love strong, capable, and at least averagely intelligent heroines, stay away from this book (I love them, and this is my punishment)

If you love good writing author skills, but hate wailing, crying, frequently fainting heroines, stay away from this book (I do, and this is my punishment)

If you hate weak-willed, insufferable, suicidal heroines, but legitly start rooting for the God of Death to hurry up with the scythe when the chick goes for an attempt at being an idiotic brat, stay away from this book (i hate them, and this is my punishment)

Conclusion: she is a spoiled brat, with double standards, full of hypocrisy, who loves to , uses her tears to get everything she wants since her only note-worthy abilities are

The writing gets a five. The heroine gets a minus infinity.

For me, she was repulsive and everything I hate in a being hosting a brain more developed than a monkey's. I despise the combination of weak, stupid and foolish as far as women in fiction are concerned. It just killed the book for me, which is the most terrifying thing a character can do.

However, Chelan gets a brownie point for somehow managing to be sick for 3/4 of the entire book. You can't accomplish that even when you actively try to make it happen. She should have been my sickbay coach back in high school when I needed just one pathetic day off in order to just get some rest from the never-ending sleepless nights due to an endless mountain of lessons and homework.

Now I will switch to the second novel so I can get even more pissed and frustrated with this embarrassment to my gender, species, galaxy, and pet plant.

Stay tuned...

With a different heroine this one would've been a home run.
Tough for me to actually work around replacing her though because this book wasn't written for an audience it was written as a part of the author's coping mechanism against mental illness. I can see where I'd want hot guys to think I was the cat's pajamas too.
Aside from the times when we delved into Mary Sue land there were a lot of emotional and biographical aspects of Chelan's character that I identified with.
The author herself is a scientist so the burn out is real, the world building engaging and the scientific and emotional dialogues were pretty spot on.

My second favorite part of this book was the Icenean society. You could look anywhere and see how they actually were an improvement over the human race: gender equality was standard, and attitudes towards consent and sensuality were positive. In this world things like a capacity for committing rape, cancer and mental illness were genetically selected out of the population.

Lots of sexy time but this is a book with multiple romantic interests...I hesitate to call it a love triangle or a menage because as I mentioned sex is cool without commitment here. There wasn't any male posturing and intense pressure to choose one guy. The men were all focused on her successfully improving her confidence and sense of self worth all while teaching her about their culture. Ironing out the relationship dynamic any further in this review would be a spoiler so I'll leave off for now.

Peace.

Long, boring, and not sexy or romantic

So long, so so so long. Pages and pages about the aliens history, their mating practices and more honestly you only need to read like 5 chapters out of the 40+, yes more than forty chapters of boredom. I don't know if the men are supposed to be alpha's but they are not.
Chelan worst character ever, the author clearly has some issues they need to work on and chose this book as therapy. The character has some deep emotional issues which is exhibited by that fact that she falls in love with and wants to please any alien that says hi to her sexually. She's suppose to be a victim of a sexual trauma as a child, and I assume the author wanted her actions sexually to be empowering but they come off as sad. She behaves like a child, and when she wants something she responds sexually. Also when she describes earth to the aliens its as if every man is a rapist and women have no value. In one day she offers herself to 4 men, one as revenge, one because she " loves him", and the other two as a prize for winning a game. When she finally did have intercourse (after giving away blow jobs like she was Oprah giving away cars) I felt disgusted.

Not good, not good at all.

It's not often that I legitimately hate a heroine but I can't stand Chelan. I just hate her guts from start to finish, the redeeming qualities of this book are those foooooiiiinnneee ass man candy-esque men, break me off a piece of...well you get it. The writing is good, but the whole book you will be practically pulling your hair out over Chelans crying jags and moments of irrational insecurity. She loves them all? Sweet. Embrace that shit and take what you want woman....but no, it's OBVIOUSLY better to cry about it and hop from man to man like a bipolar bunny on crack. Wtf?! Of all the women in the world to be abducted by intelligent, good looking warrior aliens, somehow in a planet as wide and varied as ours with some incredible strong, smart and secure women.....somehow in all of that.....we get Chelan with the stunted emotional capacity of a five year old.

I read the reviews and waited six months until I ran out of reading material before buying this one. I didn't hate the story or the writing, but Chelan needs to grow a pair because she's giving me an aneurism.

Hard to read when the main character is all about her.

An OK story with a weak main character. Chelan the main female character is a very depressing person that has very double standards. What is good for her, is only good for her and the rest have to put up with it. She is a spoiled brat that doesn't seem to care about anyone but herself. It started out a good story but turned into reading about a depressed girl that will only go by the rules of Korbas world so that she can have sexy with everyone, but Korba and all the men from that works must abstain and can only be intimate with her. Even going as far as making everyone have no female friends because she goes in jealous temper tantrums. I feel really sorry for all the men I her life.

Then you get the parts of the story that whoever lays eyes on her instantly fall in love with her. REALLY?!

I didn't read the whole book as her wishy washy personality was getting me depressed just reading it. I wasted my money.

I started this book thinking it would be a cute si-fi love story. Wrong. I only got 47% into the book, and that was because I had to force myself. The main character just annoyed me to no end! She basically told all the main characters that she loved them and wanted to do them, however she never followed through because she only truly loved one of them. The guys were nothing but nice to her, but she made them think differently and it was so annoying! and the amount of times she cried/teared up/ wept/ or shed a tear got really old, really fast. I understand in the beginning, she's scared and alone, but after that layoff it. I can't tell you how many times I threw my phone on the bed and yelled at it because of how dumb and stupid she is. I have only given up on one or two books before this one (textbooks don't count), and I tried to finish it, but I couldn't handle it. I give it a .5 star just because the description of it was better than the damn book.

It was just.... okay.

I'm torn on this book. The main character is a stupid idiot. Let's just call a spade a spade. She is annoying, and unlikable, and whiny, and... ridiculous. She is a fuckin' mess, end of.

And... I read this book being told its polyg aliens. Like.. HELLO! Come to mama!

But... just an FYI - there's no sex. Not til the end. And the book is long... so you have to read over 500 pages of whiny bullshit before there's ever any penetration.

Ugh.

I liked the premise. I wanted to DNF a few times, but I kept thinking, "It will get better! It will become more interesting! Something will happen, just wait!"

And...it never came. The three men in love with the stupid girl never got any closure and only one got to actually have any fun. It wasn't even a fun triangle.... or square, actually. Quite anti-climatic.

And then of course after taking a week to read the damn book, I finally finish and the last fucking paragraph has me clicking the next book.

GD-it.

This is a hard review to write because on the one hand I stayed up until 2am on a work night reading totally engrossed but on the other hand there were many things that annoyed me. I loved the length, I didn't love that like 75% of the book was dedicated to two amazing other men that the heroine drops to go back to her insta love. Then again the series goes on so hopefully all my problems will be resolved with more more more. The author's style also threw me off at first, it kinda read like it was beefed up with extra words one sentence at a time but I was into it after an adjustment period. I love world building, unfortunately even with the length we still only saw about two rooms in a spaceship measured in miles. I'll just have to keep reading because issues aside, I really liked this book.

Wow! I'm astounded by the depth and layers to this story. It was refreshing to see a change in alien social etiquette from the norm. I loved all the characters and now am desperate to read Ribus 7 Ticees. It's extraordinary that this story was so complex based on the fact that it mainly took place in a spaceship's quarters. Amazing.

I praying for a good resolution between Dar, Freema, Korba and Chelan. I've never been in a position before where I've wanted the main character to be with multiple partners but I find I do now.

Hope the next book is our quickly.

Excellently written book. The world created in the novel lays some really solid groundwork for the books to come. The world in Ribus 7 is intriguing and as a sci fi buff I approve! I was worried the romance would be a bit over the top for me since I am new to the genre but it wasn't at all. The relationships (despite involving another species) are surprisingly relatable and frankly, quite refreshing. I will be recommending this book to my book club!

Ribus 7 by Shae Mills has an interesting story and world building and great characters, except for the heroine. I loved that we could see everyone's point of view. The writing is very good. I also enjoyed the structure and the details on the alien culture! The heroine was either crying, having a mental breakdown or disagreeing with the cultural differences, mainly the non-monogamous relationships and at the same time she was in love with 3 different people. She was raped at a young age and she thinks that she is broken. Add to that her insecurities and shyness ,the relationships were progressing very slowly or not really. I wish I knew from the beginning about that detail and how slow the relationships would develop. Another thing that got old early was that everyone who met the heroine was enamored by her beauty. Every single person, right away! I liked it, but I skipped many pages in various parts mostly because of the endless descriptions and unnecessary information. Lastly, even if she is involved with three different men ,she is showing clear preference for one of them.
I recommend this book, for lovers of detailed descriptions, slow-burn romances and of course of sci-fi alien romances.

This book really surprised me as it's long. Not in a bad way but romance books can be short and light and this wasnt at all. The author really sets up an entire universe and culture. Lots of explanations of the science and society.
Story wise I was pleasantly surprised as the concept could have been tacky but was incredible sensitively handled. Chelan the main character, is very emotionally damaged, she has over bearing parents, a massive lack of self esteem and a fear of life. Without posting spoilers she has had a terrible trauma to cause her to act like this. The strong sexy alien men help her to see that she is beautiful and clever but it's a rocky road and she does behave like a spoilt brat rather a lot. That aside the tale is at its core love at first sight and of course lots of steamy sex scenes. I did feel it ended suddenly but I think the book will follow directly on in the next one. I'm keen to see what the rest of this fantasy world is like and how Chelan will react to meeting a god emperor.

Good story

Real world building here, you get a good idea of the culture and history of the aliens. Lots of sex scenes, but she sure seems to fall in love easily and quickly. Kind of hate that you have to read several books to find out if she ever gets an HEA and who it is with?

Interesting

It was good despite me not liking the multiple guys thing. I respect the writing style and how the author created the world. All in all, a series worth reading.
