The New Warriors are pulled into Inhumanity as their own resident Inhuman, Haechi, is targeted by two different tribes of Inhumans...and faces a difficult choice! Meanwhile, Jake Waffles and Mister Whiskers are back again, but are they friend or foe? What does Jake Waffles possess that Speedball wants so badly? And who is hunting Nova? As Justice and Scarlet Spider hit the road together for Houston, the New Warriors take their fight straight back to the High Evolutionary! But who is truly behind the High Evolutionary's plans? Can anyone trust the Evolutionaries? For the fate of all things not-quite-human, the war is on...and not everyone will survive it! Judgment has come for humanity - and for the New Warriors!
Here the series peters out to its end. I wish this had been written as a 12 issue max series so the pacing could have been better and it hadn't limped along to its cancellation.
NEW WARRIORS could have been sharper, more exacting in defining character conflicts, perhaps, but there are many caveats working against common-sense reader expectations, most significantly: it's a team book.
Oft subservient to publisher "events" and the seesawing will of executive editorial teams more interested in using B-characters as ripples in the pond rather (than the stone causing the ripples), books like NEW WARRIORS don't always fly. Character dynamics are truncated. Diversity is a calling card but tragically absent of meaningful backstory. And the narrative always soaks up that odd, faulty Transitive Property of Superhero Power (e.g., A is stronger than B, and B is stronger than C, then A is stronger than C).
But NEW WARRIORS makes the grade. It does fall prey to trying really hard to prove these characters can save the world when the chips are down, but the story is solid where the team must solve a struggle that is unique only to their team.
The New Warriors, as a group, also comprise something comics rarely do nowadays: build a team of heroes who really don't want to be together. At all. This hearkens back to the original FANTASTIC FOUR -- characters who don't really want to be heroes, but just live their lives. Water Snake, Haechi, Scarlet Spider, and Hummingbird are all fantastic characters. And although they may be tragically underserved by sharing time with a half-dozen others, their anxiety and jealousy at being forsaken by the greater world (and yet still out of place among fellow other weirdos) comes through in full force. It's a nice touch.
I'm a big fan of Marcus To's artwork. His art was my primary draw to this book. I don't think his art really gets into high gear until issue #10, which is a slight bummer, but that isn't to say To's efforts are lackluster. His action scenes are always dynamic and the emotional variation of characters is pleasingly diverse.
NEW WARRIORS is a difficult title to recommend because it's so short and incomplete. But the book is certainly more fun than not.
Okay read. Kind of like a junior Avengers squad. Not a whole lot of reference to the past, especially from Speedball. Speedball doesn't seem to be the same character as was in Avenger's Academy. Scarlet Spider is still the same and is kind of interesting. Nova is the same as in his own book, which is kind of awful. All in all a quick read but not something all that substantial. Marvel does continue to expand it's non mutant bits, presumably to give itself cover for the movies. This could have been better or a whole lot worse.
"Hey, The eternals are basically Jack Kirby's New Gods that he made for the Marvel universe" I need to look up which group came first.
That is basically all I got out of this book that was worthwhile.
I am sorry, I probably would have cut Christopher Yost a bit more slack, but after that one issue with the guy who was in a hundred foot Bear Mascot Costume, this trade deserves no Mercy. I really liked the first trade of this series. This one was a bit of a drop off.
New Warriors ends with an over-filled slugfest without any development. The team never gets any time to come together, define themselves, or establish why they're even hanging out because there are so many random fights. The art was good but not enough to offset the lack of story. Overall, not the ending that I was hoping for.
Wraps up the two overall storylines, and the series itself. It's a shame since this was one of the very few Marvel Now relaunches that I actually liked. Last issue ended with the Inhumans attacking the newest Warrior. After a mildly satisfying conclusion to that arc, the Warriors resume their attempt to thwart the High Evolutionary's plan to kill all non regular humans on earth.
Still fun. Still lacking in character development. Gets pretty Brian-Bendis-y in that people's powers are wildly inconsistent with no explanation because the plot demands that at one point they can beat someone and at another point they can't.
This is a very mediocre title. I can see why it was discontinued after 12 issues. After one year worth of stories, three of the core team members (each of the females) had no discernible personalities whatsoever. Only the male characters had any depth or any serious involvement in the stories. The men drove the story while the women filled out the team. I expect much better than that in a modern title.
The climax of the second volume concludes with an entirely unexplained development that smacks of deux ex machina. It seemed like the writers couldn't figure out how to get the story to a conclusion, so they just concluded it expeditiously. The denouement of the story suggests there is more to come, but they will have to do better than this if they want my attention.
The High Evolutionary och The Eternals måste båda döda alla mutanter och andra supervarelser för att rädda mänskligheten. Det tycker inte New Warriors om. Som helhet lite bättre än den första delen. En stark tvåa.
Solid continuation of the last volume. Yost started laundry down some hints for where the story could have gone, had the series not been cancelled. However, he did manage to tie the principal storyline off fairly well, though there were still some major questions. Fun read.
