Taken as a whole, this is a bit disjointed. It's 4 separate stories by 4 different writers and artists, plus there's the Runaways Saga thing which was just a recap of the story so far told by Molly. I only skimmed it as there wasn't even new art. The book begins with the Runaways dealing with the loss of a teammate in Brian K. Vaughan's final arc on the book. Then the Runaways meet the Young Avengers in a Civil War crossover. Next, Joss Whedon takes the team back to 1907 New York. My favorite moment was Molly taking on the Punisher. Finally, the Young Avengers return in a Secret Invasion crossover. As you can see the book is a hodge-podge of stories, most of which are quite good.

3.5 Stars.

I really enjoyed the ending but I found the beginning of this collection a little lacklustre; all over the place. The art as always was beautifully done but as previously stated was even better in the end. Overall, a good ending to a fun and colourful collection.

I’m having so much fun with this series, the characters and the story and this was just as enjoyable as the first two instalments but once again, I’m left disappointed by some of the outdated and offensive language.

TW: racist slur, homophobia, ableism, racism, child abuse implied

Better than the last but not by much.

More high school drama and I guess I'm gonna have to get used to that. They really gave Nico the worst romantic life in this series. Yikes. Poor girl.

Xavin is much better here although I question the writers just making them so willing to help the Runaways because of Karolina. Aside from Molly, and we'll get to her relationship with Xavin later, they're all quite mean and distrustful of Xavin. Before you start, I know, this was a gender fluid character in 2005, I shouldn't expect the writers to be super progressive. But that's complete bullshit. You took on the task of writing for a gender fluid character, do your research and don't have the group intentionally misgender or make fun of their gender identity. It doesn't take a genius to know "Sh*male" is a slur. Yet here is Xavin saving Victor and Chase's asses left and right. I would not have their patience.

Molly is kind of a different tale. They clearly use her to get at what Xavin's take on gender is and that's fine with me. She comes around to be the most respectful and understanding towards Xavin which may be a way to say "Children adapt better" because she takes Xavin's words and runs with them. Although, it was heartbreaking that she implies she's uncomfortable with Xavin not being a girl all the time and we later get an injured Xavin, unable to transform, apologizing to Molly for making her uncomfortable. That does not sit well with me.

We also get Karolina constantly uncomfortable with Xavin when they're in a masculine form. That was icky to me as well, actually. Later on, there's a scene where Xavin transforms into a female form while arguing with Karolina and the writers use that as a way to say "look, this is Xavin's natural form" and that was... a writing choice , I guess.

Sigh, I grew to really like Xavin and I wish the writers had done more research before trying to tackle concepts of gender.

This was a collection of Runaways series involving other characters and I didn't really like that. Punisher was boring. Kingpin was... okay. Not that interesting except that it presenting a moral conflict because he group has been trying to distance themselves from their evil parents and here they are signing up to work with Kingpin.

The journey to the past bugged the hell out of me. As a woman of color, I hate, hate, HATE, when a group of characters travels to the past. If there's people of color in the group, they almost always get treated like shit because this is the past. Xavin gets it worse than Victor. Molly and Karolina rescue a child bride (that subplot :( ) and try to bring her back with them. She sees Xavin transform and kiss Karolina and runs away because she grew up around racists and homophobes. Victor and Xavin get called slurs. It's just not good. The structure of this plot is Lilly telling the story of how Victor tried to get her to come to the future and she refused. It's kind of interesting but I soured on Victor a long time ago.

I love the Young Avengers so it was cool seeing them come back. Honestly, and considering how awful that arc was, I'm throwing up in my mouth a little, but the Secret Invasion tie ins were the best in this book. There's a conflict between Xavin and Teddy because Teddy gave up his destiny as the savior to the Skrull community. The Skrulls are trying to take over Earth and will kill anyone who gets in their way and Xavin thinks Teddy could have stopped that.

Xavin saves Teddy a lot even though they're Skrulls they won't be able to stop the other Super Skrulls because they never learned or use more than one power at a time. Teddy bows to Xavin in the end and that was amazing to see! There's also kind of a cute moment when Karolina yells at Xavin for initially telling the others to leave when it looked like they might die. Speaking of, I did not appreciate Victor immediately joining the "Xavin's evil because they're a Skrull and Skrulls are attacking" bandwagon. Like he doesn't know what it feels like to be misjudged.

Anyway, better than the last but I've soured on Victor and Chase

I got most of the way through this, but towards the end it stopped being about Runaways's story line and became a compilation of any other comics the characters were featured in. I tried to finish, but was horribly bored and kept putting it off. I haven't finished it in 7 months- I'm probably not going to.

Is it just me or does Vaughan just seem to be losing interesting at this point in the series? A good chunk of it is tie-ins from Civil War and the Skrull invasion and Joss Whedon takes a stab at it too, so it’s definitely not up to par with volume 1. I still miss Alex!

So much teenage drama. Yes, I’m aware they are teenagers but I don’t do well with angst okay. I also don’t appreciate the group’s attitude and behavior towards Xavin. I had a hard time differentiating whether their distrust came from the fact that he was a skrull or that he was gender fluid at times. I get that this was 2005 but did we really have to throw around terms like “bro ho?”

Anyway, this was slightly better than volume 2. Shout out to my young avengers!

ahh I'm not totally here for all the Civil War stuff but the Runaways/Young Avengers Civil War was relatively enjoyable, as far as all that goes. Not totally here for all the Secret Invasion stuff either, tbh, but still, happy to have more of the Runaways doing whatever. I loved the time travel story!

anyway, a lot going on here, but overall I'm just happy for more of the characters I love <3

I ran out of the individual volumes, and this deluxe collection combines a number of different arcs, writers, and artists, including a Civil War arc with the Young Avengers and a "Runaways Saga." Because of that, this felt very uneven. I much preferred the arcs written by Brian K. Vaughan that stayed in the Runaways universe exclusively. The YA/Runaways mash-up did not introduce the Young Avengers at all - luckily I had read a few volumes, so I knew who most of the characters were, but I was pretty lost because so many of the characters easily looked the same. Victor and Chase often looking confusingly similar, and then Billy (or was it Teddy?) looked like Xavin, who kept changing forms and made it that much more confusing. The Saga felt a bit like a throwaway, it didn't seem to interact with the other arcs except that of course they kept the whole storyline of Gert being dead! I really think Runaways suffers without Gert. I also felt like there was a lot of fuss made over Xavin's gender and I'm sure "they/them" pronouns were not as widespread when this was written, but it would have saved a lot of he/she/it conversations from taking over. Never mind that the Skulls and aliens are plots that I'm really not into...

Whenever you read a bind up of any book or comic there is always a chance some part of it you will not like as much as others. This holds true for this issue of the runaways- it is more bitty.

We have the end of Vaughan’s, amazing, run on this comic which as with his previous two volumes of Runaways was amazing- however it ended seemingly mid arc which is just a tad annoying.

In this we also have two crossovers. Civil war: Young Avengers/ Runaways and Secret invasion: Runaways/ Young Avengers, the former was one of the highlights of this volume- amazingly thought out and the characters and interactions were dead on perfect. The former while a great short arc was not as gripping as the Civil War cross over.

This volume also includes Joss Weadon’s run ( I said it was bitty) I will say that this was one of the disappointments, while the story and arc he told was brilliant and very well done the whole of it didn’t really fit with the Runaways on a whole, and some of the characters were totally out of sync with what had been presented off them in pervious arcs.

Mixed bag overall, I love Runaways yet the later two volumes I feel were a lot more grounded than this was.

Quite enjoyable until the Civil War stuff, which was a bit dicey at times (who're all these people, and why are their villains so melodramatic?!). And then Joss Whedon took over and did what he always does: create drama where it doesn't need to exist whilst completely ignoring all opportunities for subtler growth and drama where it already exists. I miss Vaughan, et al already....

There were a few bits here and there that felt like the "old" Runaways, but overall this was really disappointing. One of my favorite characters was missing entirely and there was little-to-no plot or character development, because the entire volume is pretty much just a compilation of battles. Other comics were thrown in when the Runaways were featured in them and the art style changes... ack. And if this is really where the story ends (there is no volume 4, to my knowledge), then what the heck? There was no closure.

I hate when they make these bind-up volumes and add in other series because it has the same characters. I'm not reading Civil War right now so don't put it in here. Another Runaways saga? I'm not reading that one right now so get out of this volume. It throws off the groove especially when they place them in between issues of the series I'm currently reading, which wasn't good. If you're going to read 'The Runaways' just stick with the first complete volume.

It's hard to quantify how much I liked this volume since it was made up of so many different things. I enjoyed all the usual issues of Runaways, was less enthused with Runaways Saga, and skipped over most of the issues with the Runaways & Young Avengers. It seems like at this point they were reaching for content.

This completes the saga of the the original Runaways comic book, it adds Joss Whedon, Writer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Angel, to complete the last six episodes. This graphic novel collects Runaways (2005) 19-30, Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways 1-4, and Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers 1-3.

overview: The runaways deal from the last loss of a teammate. One hellbent on getting to member back, goes the the beings that gave their parents, the Pride, their evil powers, and member makes a deal if they sacrifice an innocent soul like there parents had done then they will bring the teammate back from the dead. Things get pretty intense, theres a lot of ways this can turn out and because of the loss one member is highly unstable. The other member deal with the prediction that one of the members will turn evil in the future. Karolina and Xavin explore their relationship started in the last volume. Xavin deals with being a new member. Molly is still my favorite and she has an awesome run in the the Punisher. The Runaways go back in time 100 years, I din't care for this story line but it does have the best lines in the volume. The Runaways face off against the Young Avengers, Kingpin and a lot of ninjas, and a Skrull invasion.

This Novel goes in chronological order, so the Runaways goes through 19-21 then the civil war storyline effected all events in the marvel universe, and we jump in to that storyline with the Young Avengers. I liked the first three a lot I feel the Civil war slowed down the book, but I will say the current things that the group were going through continued, no storylines were dropped or forgotten about. Then it closes out the Runaways run 22-30 Joss Whedon writes 25-30 and being a fan I have to say it was the worst story-wise and the best dialogue-wise. His story deals with the past and too much was going on without the proper build up, I did enjoy the scenes with Kingpin and the Punisher and thought that it ended pretty well. Then we get to the secret Invasion which is the way too end this book, it was so action packed, and we finally get to se the new member use her power, all the members of the Young Avengers and the Runaways get a moment to shine.

This novel kept with the series dealing with teenage angst, one member becomes an adult and dealing with that awkward time. It has an opportunity to bring a lost character back, and it is so refreshing the way it gets dealt with, it does not wrap up in a nice little bow, but it does wrap up by adding to a characters arc.

I recommend this if you're a fan of the Marvel Universe, if you like young adult novels, there's cussing but it is bleeped out. I give this a 3.6 out of 5 stars.

Full Disclosure: I did not read the Secret Invasion and Civil War Crossovers 1) because I haven't read either of those arcs and 2) because I just wanted to flow with the Runaways individual stories as best I could. Please forgive me.

That being said, I could tell the series was starting to loose steam by the time Whedon took over. It was slowing down so much the creative team had to make time travel the primary premise, and that's usually a signal of the end in a lot of series. While I wouldn't necessarily say the story dropped in quality, it did just seem sloppier in general with the writing, and the artists either didn't want or couldn't nail down a consistent look on a few characters, meaning I had to constantly look back and figure out who the heck that was in a panel....

Overall though, I am still in love with the characters. Rarely have I seen teen superheros so ironically human or "realistic," for lack of a better word. Even 10 years later...

I'm not really into the superhero thing, but with volume 1 this didn't feel like just another superhero comic. This volume, however, is very spandex and capes. A good chunk of it is cross-overs with the Young Avengers, which is cool if you're a fan of the Young Avengers, but feels like a chore to read if you're just there for the Runaways. It feels very different from what made me love the first volume. It was episodic, and there wasn't as much focus on the characters, their relationships, their development. There were no big surprises.

In the last section, the dialogue was so lazy and uninspired I flipped to the front to see if Vaughan had written it. He hadn't. The best parts of this volume were written by Vaughan and Whedon. If I pick up the next volume, I think I'll skip any sections not written by Vaughan or Whedon.

This is what I call a mixed bag:
- the final part of BKV's run is not as good as his previous stories but it's still a more than solid read. 4 out of 5 stars
- Zeb Wells' Civil War miniseries is a great surprise because he has been the first author to write the Runaways after BKV and he did a delightful job. Plus, Stefano Caselli did an amazing job as well. 4 out of 5 stars
- then comes Joss Whedon's short run and it's kinda awful: dull story, the Runaways behave completely out of character and their evolution we saw in Vaughan's stories is thrown out of the window. 2.5 out of 5 stars
- the Secret Invasion tie in is a nice addition to the main event, and Miyazawa art is as gorgeous as always. 3.5 out of 5 stars

This is a really hard book to rate. The end of Brian Vaughan's run is quite satisfying. Joss Whedon's brief series is one of many high points for the series. Both of these validate my purchase of this collection. That said, the Civil War story was interminable and pretty damned dull for a Runaways story (I'm not crazy about the Civil War comic book execution in general, though). The Secret War section was passable, but I didn't like the art all that much (so cartoony after the magnificent art of the Vaughan and Whedon sagas), and the story in the SW arc was kind of forgettable. Xavin has just never clicked for me. What I liked in this book, I *really* liked, though. 3.5 out of 5.

So the first of the collections where I Really hadn't read any of the issues... and containing sets of crossovers that are after my time... but which pretty much prove my feeling that, when you have existing good books and characters, the crossovers are just horrible interruptions of the stories you wanted to read. Civil War does nothing for me, nor Secret Invasion... even though that one is slightly more tolerable in that I like the Young Avengers.

But the Civil War bits... everything super grim and violent (I mean not that Runaway original stuff wasn't) and to what end... ? I'm glad I never read to find out.

This is the third volume of collected comics in the Runaways series.

It's a fairly long book, despite the graphic novel format. I started this book several times and I took such a long time to read it. I guess I just wasn't that into it.

The plot is so contrived and I'm not too familiar with some of the extraneous characters that were part of the stories. Still, I enjoyed finding out more about the various characters I've grown fond of.

Overall, it's an entertaining read, but I'm not sure how much longer I'll try to keep up with the series.

This one really started slowly, but it seemed to pick up speed towards the end.... or was I just tired of reading this and wanted to get through it?

It's more of a weird collection of separate stories, some with the Young Avengers (who I don't know at all), some with Kingpin, some with the Skrull invasion (more Young Avengers!), and even one time-traveling story. More misses than hits, a little too much teen angst, and disjoined story tellers / artists make this a collection to read for completeness more than excitement to find out what's next.

I began this third volume of The Runaways to prep for the final season on Hulu. I still have one more volume that I wanted to read, but I admit my steam is starting to run out on this series. It's been fun, but this volume wasn't enough to get me excited to read the next one. I am a big fan of Vaughan's and some cool stories were in this one, but I am thinking I might wait for a bit to read the next volume, if at all. I know this volume was kind of a mixed bag, with the stories being by different authors and artists, but that being said, I think I have had my fix for a while.

Runaways 19-24: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A great arc with lots of amazing moments!

Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways 1-4: ⭐⭐
Drab, boring, and really uninspired and predictable, but with some amazing art

Runaways Saga: ⭐⭐⭐
Nothing special, just a little recap of the story so far with cropped art from previous issues.

Runaways 25-30: ⭐
Joss Whedon's writing is a greasy stain on this otherwise fantastic franchise

Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers: ⭐⭐⭐
My favorite gender fluid alien gets to shine in this one, and Takeshi Miyazawa's art is always a treat to the eyes

The plot twists in this collection was EVERYTHING. I loved the many mystery elements that were incorporated into this series. It DOES get very dark and gory. Once again, the diversity of different people and the representation was executed phenomenally; especially Xavin’s struggle with gender dysphoria. It could still do without the occasional slur, or at least have other characters call them out of using such bigoted terms.

Overall:

Writing style: 4/5
Atmosphere: 4.5/5
Plot/Storyline: 4/5
Ending: 4/5

Okay, the parts that were actual Runaways comics? Fantastic. Way more entertaining than the last collection. The rest of it? Could not care less. 2 stars to young avengers crossover, 3 to “super” avengers crossover, and ZERO to Runaways saga (what is the point of that comic??). I’m still curious about their story though.... I feel like it could have gone in a really interesting direction from here.

Enjoyable, even though I don't really know about or care for the Young Avengers, and large parts of this collection were crossovers.

I am also kind of annoyed because, while in the 2nd collected volume Gert is killed, she is on the cover of this volume, and there are 2 attempts to 'bring her back' in the issues contained within. However neither of them is successful and she's still not back - so it felt like a bit of a cheat to put her on the cover and get my hopes up :(

Unfortunately this volume felt a bit underwhelming. The story didn’t really seem to have any direction, maybe partly due to all the event tie-ins, and I just didn’t feel as invested in it. I still like the characters but their relationships just didn’t seem that close anymore. Overall there was nothing I really disliked but also nothing really great.
