Struggling professional soccer player Rainey Allen has come to her grandparents’ small town in Georgia to train—certainly not to coach kids. But when a grief-stricken little boy gets excited about playing with her, she can’t refuse. Even if his uncle is Scott Wilcox, the source of Rainey’s worst preteen memory. Once on track to be a professional athlete himself, Scott is grappling with his new life as the high school baseball coach and guardian of his orphaned nephew. But as playing soccer puts the light back in Henry’s eyes, old wounds begin to heal. When Rainey gets her big break, will she give up on her dreams…or leave behind the family who stole her heart?
From Love Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.
The fact that I flew through this book in one sitting the moment it arrived in my mailbox is a very good sign!
Rainey is temporarily back home to train and heal while she waits for a professional soccer contract but she doesn’t expect to share the field and gym with her childhood enemy, Scott. Being back in town brings up old memories, but as she gets to know Scott and his nephew Henry (whom Scott is now guardian of), she finds herself drawn into their lives. She wants to help them grieve the loss of Henry’s parents and even steps in to help local kids with soccer lessons while she’s around.
But the closer she grows to Scott and Henry, the riskier it feels. Rainey knows that the moment she’s offered a contract, she’s gone. Soccer has always been her calling… or so she thought. But is it possible she was meant to return home at the exact moment Scott came back with a little boy who needed her just as much?!
This story was so sweet. The banter was adorable, the shared history added depth, and the growing chemistry was fantastic. I loved the elements of faith and the strong family focus. It really raises the question: what happens when you finally get what you’ve always worked for, but realize a different path might bring just as much joy, maybe even more? Scott and Rainey both have hard choices to make, and watching them navigate that tension was wonderful.
I loved this! I gave it a 4.5, rounded up to 5.
I received a complimentary copy, and this review reflects my honest opinion.
Taking a Second Shot only needed one shot to grab my heart! I adore Leslie DeVooght’s writing style, and protagonists Rainey and Scott – and the little fictional Georgia town where this story is set – were a perfect fit for her voice. Rainey just completely became my bestie as I read this novel even though we have very little in common, and my heart went out to Scott as he tries to step into his brother’s roles while still dealing with his own grief and unfulfilled dreams. His orphaned nephew Henry had me wrapped around his little finger with very little effort, and if Henry was a real child in my purview he would have undoubtedly gotten super annoyed at me for wanting to hug him with a ‘squeezy hug’ (as my 4 year old nephew calls my husband’s bear hugs) every time I saw him. We don’t often see a heroine who’s a professional soccer player either, so that was a really nice change of pace and a great plot device.
The back-and-forth between Rainey and Scott is so much fun to read, made all the more so by their middle-school backstory. This could have easily been an enemies-to-more romance but I don’t think these two could stay enemies for long now that they’re reacquainted as adults. Because even if their banter has a bit of an edge to it initially, their chemistry is palpable to readers from the first moment they share the page. And as they team up to help Henry cope with his parents’ deaths, I was rooting for all three of them to find a happily-ever-after together. I particularly loved all the layers to Rainey’s character development across the novel, as well as the honest exploration (for both her and Scott) of reconciling the plans we have for our lives with the ones God has for us instead. And have I mentioned how fun the interactions between Rainey and Scott are? They put a smile on my face in nearly every shared scene (except for the times where I wanted to purse whomp one or both of them for putting walls back up that I thought we had already knocked down).
Bottom Line: You could grab some cleats (baseball or soccer), and reserve a goal and a field and a batting cage… or you can just pick up a copy of Taking a Second Shot and some popcorn and let the characters run all the drills while you wrap yourself up in this sweet and swoony novel instead. Leslie DeVooght’s latest is the kind of story that wraps romance around real life – grief, second chances, interrupted plans – and balances it all with the perfect mix of humor and hope. The faith threads aren’t preachy but they are solid, and they’re relatable to a wide variety of readers, even if your situations don’t look exactly like Rainey’s or Scott’s. Speaking of those two, their dialogue sparkles with some witty banter, a little sass, and a lot of tender affection (especially the more time they spend together), and I could not have been more delighted to hang out with them in this novel. It wasn’t just the romance that captured my heart though; it was the little family taking shape between Rainey, Scott, and Henry that really made this story for me. I wish the epilogue had been a little longer but that’s just because I loved these characters so much!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
My first thought of this book is that I wished it was longer. I would’ve loved to have seen more of Rainey’s time with Scott and Henry, helping the two to heal from their loss of family, and just because Henry’s adoration for Rainey was adorable! I also think we needed an appendix for Rainey’s recipes because they sound delicious!
The characters are definitely ones to be loved. Rainey was persistent and determined to achieve her goal of getting a spot on the National Women’s Soccer team, and she wasn’t about to let anyone, especially Scott, get in her way. The way she handles him in the first chapter in their tiff about her using the baseball outfield for soccer practice was fantastic and had me smiling. I liked her right then. She also has a very caring nature, which is seen when she’s running the soccer clinic for the kids and I love how she connects with Henry so easily and calls him “Buddy” without a second thought.
I adored Scott as well, and really felt for him. He was struggling with so much. Not only did he have all these new responsibilities on his plate with being Henry’s guardian, teaching middle school and high school P.E., as well as coaching the baseball team, but he also struggled with a lot of mixed feelings about his new life. He missed his career playing minor-league professional baseball, as it was his dream, but at the same time felt guilty about missing his career because he felt like it was part of the cause of his brother and sister-in-law’s deaths.
Henry, of course, is the most loveable because how can you not love him? His immediate attachment to Rainey was so cute I swear I could see sparkles coming off the page in those moments. Of course I felt for him too because being so young he doesn’t know how to process the grief of losing his parents. Heck, I wouldn’t know how to process it and I’m (supposedly) a full-grown adult. I think that’s why it’s even more adorable that Henry just opens up around Rainey.
The themes of the book were handled with care, aside from the grief characters are going through, another major one was Rainey’s relationship with her father as well as figuring out her future - both of which she relied on God for in order to forgive and lead her on the right path. I’ve been where she is about having to make that choice that seems so big you have no idea what to do before, so I really related to her in that moment (the healthy eating and athleticism, not so much).
Overall, I enjoyed this book and am happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a book of this type. Again, I wish it were longer and went a little deeper into working through the grief and had a recipe section, but that’s just me.
Taking a Second Shot comes out on December 30th!
Thanks to the author for selecting me for the launch team and providing me with a copy of the book to review!
In Taking a Second Shot by author Leslie DeVooght, Rainey and Scott hadn’t seen each other since middle school. Now she’s a pro soccer player, and he’s a hometown teacher and baseball coach. He’s also a new dad, guardian to his young nephew after his parents’ deaths. This story kept me glued to my chair as I flipped page after page, reading it in one sitting! The author thoughtfully handles Scott and young Henry’s grief, as well as navigating their new relationship as more father/son rather than just fun-uncle/nephew. I also loved how even though we may have plans for our lives (like Rainey and her soccer plans), the Lord always has the BEST plan for us, even if it’s not what we had in mind. Plus this book has my favorite, an epilogue! I’d sure love to come back to Woodley and check in on Scott, Rainey, and Henry again. I’m sure you will, too! My thanks for the complimentary copy of this book. My opinion is my very own.
Such a well written story about forgiveness and family. A gentle reminder that God often has a plan even though we may not see it at the time-much like the characters in the book. I enjoyed how the author brought the sport of soccer and a 5 year old boy into the storyline. It made for a very heartwarming read. This book is from the Harlequin Love Inspired Series and is scheduled to be released December 30, 2025, and I highly recommend it.
I was given a complimentary copy of the book from Netgalley and the publisher. All words are my own.
When I first began reading this book I wasn't sure what to expect. Leslie is a new to me Author and this is my first time reading anything she has written. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Reading Rainey and Scott's story and learning about their history and watching them slowly fall in love with one another while working together to teach Scott's nephew Henry and some of his friends soccer was amazing. I really enjoyed Scott and Rainey's story and definitely give this book five stars.
I really enjoyed reading this book! It contains all of the ingredients for a super sweet romance!
Rainey amazes me! She's diligent about training and eating healthy. Her future seemed to be all set, but her life takes a different turn. Scott is dealing with a huge change in his life. He wants nothing more than to make his nephews life one that is filled with hope and laughter instead of depression. Henry is super adorable! I like that he decides to let his heart open up to his uncle and Rainey.
I liked learning about professional soccer and all that it entails. Dedication to the sport, discipline and eating well are super important. It reminds me of my faith walk. Daily Bible reading and prayer make my faith stronger.
What an interesting glimpse into the world of professional women's soccer! I appreciated learning more about this sport, along with the rigours and demands of what would be expected to perform well as an athlete. At the same time, it was lovely getting to know a former baseball player and his nephew as they navigated grief and loss together. It was also touching that years after a failed experience with one another in school, Rainey and Scott were able to move beyond their past and forge a friendship that could help them serve the athletic needs of their community, along with Scott's nephew, Henry.
While the timing hasn't been quite right for Rainey and Scott, it’s clear that they both had a heart for serving others and in placing other's needs above their own. Their selflessness and willingness to step up to God's call on their lives made them endearing characters. While Rainey would definitely be an aspiration to look up to in terms of her athletic and culinary prowess, her vulnerability also made her relatable. If you enjoy stories about athletes and what it means to surrender your dreams to God, Taking a Second Shot shows that there is always another opportunity if we are willing to take it.
Taking a Second Shot by Leslie DeVooght An Uplifting Inspirational Romance Taking a Second Shot An Uplifting Inspirational Romance Can he convince her that he’s playing for keeps? My favorite quote is Rainey Allen punched in the code on the school security keypad, dodging the nerves attacking her like defenders on the soccer field. She’d never allowed anxiety to stop her on the pitch, and she wouldn’t let it tie her in knots today. Even if this place had witnessed the worst time of her life, she was no longer an awkward preteen girl. She was a strong woman, and she refused to miss her strength-training session. I recommend this book. Taking a Second Shot by Leslie DeVooght is a 4 -star book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Leslie DeVooght I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own. From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.
What an absolutely delightful read! I was drawn into this story from the first line and I couldn’t stop reading. I’ve been wanting to read a book by this author for quite a while and I’m so excited to have finally read one, I absolutely loved her writing and I will definitely be reading more from her in the future! The small town of Woodley, Georgia felt so cozy and homey, and I wish I could actually travel there to visit these characters. Scott is a fabulous hero, he’s so kind and I love the way he always puts others first! Henry is an adorably precocious addition to the story, and I also loved Champ, the yellow lab! Rainey is a wonderful heroine, and while I’m not a soccer player, I could totally relate to her, especially the fact she’d never dated or been kissed (me too, girl!) and her tendency to be a perfectionist and try to control things. I’m a firm believer that God brings us the books we need exactly when we need them, and this book blessed me so much, I seriously cannot put into words the way this book ministered to me, and even healed me a little! I know almost nothing about soccer, but I’ve always been fascinated by the sport, and this book taught me so much about it! I seriously loved absolutely everything about this book! Taking a Second Shot is a fabulous story and I most highly recommend it! Total must read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author! My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own
I received a paperback ARC of Taking a Second Shot from the author. All thoughts are my own.
Taking a Second Shot is a Love Inspired Christian romance, and it also happens to be the first paperback ARC I’ve ever received, which made this read especially meaningful for me.
This was my first Christian sports romance, and I enjoyed seeing both soccer and baseball woven into the story. The faith elements were thoughtfully included, and there were several quotes that stood out to me. I also appreciated the small-town setting, which is always a favorite of mine.
The story carries emotional depth, particularly as Scott navigates single parenthood after loss and as Rainey’s dedication and drive come through on the page. I loved the second-chance romance element, as they knew each other back in middle school, and the small nostalgic moments came full circle in a satisfying way. The theme of family redemption and the supportive presence of loved ones added warmth and heart, and the kiddos were adorable side characters who brought so much life to the story. I also enjoyed watching their relationship grow out of friendship, with a brief touch of early tension that added interest without overpowering the romance.
Overall, this was an enjoyable and heartfelt read. I’d recommend it to readers looking for a Christian sports romance, especially since this is a niche that doesn’t get a lot of spotlight.
This sweet story dealt with some deep topics, such as how to help a child through the grief that comes from the loss of a parent and wondering if God’s plan for your life is different than what you thought it was going to be.
I liked that Scott and Rainey knew each other from when they were in middle school. Once they reconnected and Rainey met Scott’s nephew, they began to grow close. It was clear to me that they both had feelings for each other, however, knowing when to speak up and share those feelings and when it was better to step back and be supportive of the other person was a trickier issue.
There was a solid faith message throughout the story, plenty of tension, and some swoony moments, too. The ending to the story felt a bit abrupt to me, though, even with the epilogue. I would have loved for the epilogue to have lasted a bit longer before wrapping things up.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Taking a Second Shot by Leslie DeVooght is a charming, heartfelt story about dreams, second chances, and the surprising ways life can change our definition of “calling.”
Rainey has her sights set on becoming a professional women’s soccer player, and returning home is only meant to be a temporary stop. But reconnecting with Scott—the football coach tied to an awkward middle-school memory she’d rather forget—complicates her carefully laid plans. Even more unexpected is Henry, the little boy in Scott’s life who quietly tugs at Rainey’s heart and makes leaving feel riskier than staying.
As Rainey grows closer to both Scott and Henry, she’s forced to confront a question she never planned to ask: what if the future she’s been chasing isn’t the one she’s truly meant for? DeVooght weaves romance, tenderness, and emotional depth into a story that explores whether second chances can lead us exactly where we belong. This is a sweet, thoughtful read for anyone who loves stories about coming home, healing old wounds, and discovering that sometimes the best dreams are the ones we never saw coming.
"Taking a Second Shot" is a sweet, second chance romance. I really enjoyed reading this soccer/baseball small town romance that features Rainey, a woman who wants to play professional soccer and a former baseball player Scott who is the guardian of his nephew ( parents passed away in an accident). This book has some banter and tension over the use of the only field in town that needs to be used for both soccer and baseball, plus some family issues that need to be worked out with Scott and his nephew.
Readers that enjoy novella length books with Christian faith in the story and Hallmark/GAF movie like books will enjoy this Love Inspired story. I liked the ending and how forgiveness became an important part of the story because in the end, we could all use more of that in our lives.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Taking A Second Shot is a book I highly recommend. Scott, Henry and Rainey's relationship is at times heartbreaking but lovely. The way Rainey helps Scott and Henry deal with their grief is spot on. This book rings so true. In the beginning Rainey didn't know how to help them deal with their grief but she found out that sometimes just being there is all people need. Rainey has to deal with her personal relationship with her father as well. It has been strained ever since her parents' divorce. He comes back into her life to say that he has changed and that he is getting married again to none other than Rainey's soccer coach who is just ten years older than her. Rainey slowly accepts their relationship and welcomes Kacey into the family. Taking A Second Shot is the only book that I ever read that literally made me cry. It was a good cry. I will read more books by Leslie Kirby DeVooght.
Taking a Second Shot by Leslie DeVooght is a cute story. I enjoyed getting to know Rainey, Scott, and Henry. The chemistry between Rainey and Scott was apparent from the beginning. Their history was amusing and I like how the author referenced it throughout the book. I enjoyed the banter between Rainey and Scott. I felt for Henry who is adjusting to living with uncle and dealing with the loss of his parents. Another delightful character was Rainey’s grandmother. She is anything but subtle. The narrative raises an important question: What occurs when one attains a long-pursued goal, only to question whether it remains the desired path forward? Scott and Rainey will need to think about what they want and make some tough decisions. I enjoyed the faith element woven throughout and the focus on family. The epilogue nicely wrapped up the book and left me smiling. Taking a Second Shot is a sweet story with a field dilemma, a square dance debacle, tasty treats, soccer camp, a dream come true, and a difficult decision.
First I love all Love Inspired books! I love the Christian feeling and the authors who write them.
Rainey & Scott you cannot help yourself but to fall in love with them. Rainey is a strong determined adult who knows what she wants and is willing to pull out all the cards- even playing the ““granddaughter” card. Scott on the other hand is learning how to get his life back in order after taking guardianship of his nephew, but just wants to play baseball.
Of course it’s a slow burn romance- with God mixed in, which makes it even better. The storyline will keep you on your toes not fully knowing what will happen next in their relationship, in Rainey’s soccer career, etc. The best thing is, I also see redemption and forgiveness between Rainey and another character.
I am excited to read more of Leslie DeVooghts books!
this was such a sweet story, and not the fake type where life is perfect. In fact in this story life looks like real life in the world we live in. Pain of loss, striving in the workplace, carrying around old hurts and doing your best to love those around you. There is even the friends and family getting up in your business to "help" .
in the end this book will help you see what is important in life and that your gifts might be used in ways you never expected, that dream you were chasing doesn't make much sense any more in light of what you have around you.
go check out this sweet but real story, you won't be disappointed.
Taking A Second Shot has all the elements I love - God-centered, single parent, second chance, witty banter, no spice but still conveys attraction and chemistry - which kept me turning the pages to see how it would arrive to the conclusion. I’m not going to lie; I definitely had a few tears flowing at the end. It’s the sappy romantic in me who always cries at the happily ever afters, and I love it every single time! I’m looking forward to reading more from Leslie DeVooght. 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend!
Taking a Second Shot is a charming, hope‑filled debut from Leslie DeVooght, and she delivers it with the confidence of a seasoned author. The story blends warmth, gentle humor, and emotional honesty as two characters navigate forgiveness, fresh starts, and the courage it takes to open your heart again. The romance feels genuine and tender, and the faith elements are woven in with a light, steady touch. It’s the kind of book that leaves you smiling long after you turn the last page — a wonderful start to what I hope will be a long writing career.
This sweet romance set in small town Georgia will have you crying,”Goal!!” Professional soccer hopeful, Rainey, finds herself reacquainted with her middle school nemesis, Scott. As it turns out, he is not the immature boy she remembers and is also back in town learning how to cope with a new job and responsibilities as the primary guardian to his orphaned nephew. The two reconnect and find companionship, but how does that fit into Rainey’s professional dreams? And, how can she determine all that God has in store for her life?
Rainey has spent her entire life training for a shot at playing in the National Women’s Soccer League, so why having spent time with a delightful five year old and his uncle is she second guessing her choices? A sweet story about making choices and changing direction. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was filled with so many heartfelt moments it's hard to choose a favorite. But I really liked how Rainey was able to be a light in little Henry's life after losing his parents. Not only that, but she was able to help Scott through the hardships of becoming a father figure to Henry as well all while figuring out if her lifelong dream is still the one she wants to chase. Such a great read!
I adore these faith based stories! I really enjoyed this second chance book. It's a good wholesome read with sweet characters, adorable dialog and a realistic, heartfelt story line. This wonderful book has it all touching on grief, hard choices, family, romance and hope. Very well written, inspiring and entertaining. I highly recommend any of Leslie DeVooght's or Love Inspired books.
TAKING A SECOND SHOT by Leslie DeVooght is a story about second chances, healing, and the power of faith. Rainey Allen and Scott Wilcox’s journey from awkward childhood memories to unexpected connection is both emotional and uplifting. The small-town Georgia setting adds warmth and charm, making it easy to get lost in their world.
Rainey’s struggle to balance her dreams with her growing attachment to Scott and his nephew, Henry, gives the story heart. Watching Henry’s joy return through soccer was especially moving, and the themes of forgiveness and family are beautifully woven throughout.
TAKING A SECOND SHOT was an enjoyable read. It’s a sweet, faith-filled romance that reminds us that love and grace often come when we least expect them. I’m giving it the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!
Can be read as a standalone. Be prepared for all of your emotions. Second chances Adjusting after traumatic events Forgiveness and rebuilding relationships Little boy adorably too grown for everyone's good Matchmaking meddling family

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I knew I HAD to read this book when I saw the cover. We’re a huge soccer family so this got my attention right away. Rainey Allen is back in her grandparents' small town. She’s training for the pros when she runs into her middle school nemesis. Sparks fly but Rainey needs to stay the course to make the team and fulfill her lifelong dream.
