About the author

A well-known name in Hindi literature, Nirmal Verma is known mainly for his fictional works. Born on April 3, 1929, he obtained a M.A. in history from Delhi University. He studied Czech at the Oriental Institute in Prague, and has been a Fellow with the International Institute for Asian Studies. Nirmal Verma is a recipient of India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith, and his short stories Kavve aur kala pani won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985. Some of his more popular novels are Antim aranya, Rat ka riportar, Ek Chithra Sukh, and Lal tin ki chat.

Vedina, his first novel, is set in Prague, Czechoslavakia. Like all his works, it is rich in symbolism with a style that is simple yet sophisticated. As one of the most important prose Hindi writers of our times, Nirmal Verma's creativity extends to the description and travel to places in Europe especially on Czechoslovakia and literary criticism. Among his nonfiction writings is Kal ka jokhim an investigation of the Indic arts in the 20th century. His diary, Dhundh se uthati dhun, describes his life in detail while addressing issues related to Hindi literature. His works have been widely translated into English and Gujarati.

पहले कब पढ़ा था, याद भी नहीं। उसकी बहुत हल्की सी याद है। एक छाप कहीं बहुत भीतर।जैसे कि बचपन की होती है। बस इतना याद था कि उपन्यास में बर्फ थी। अकेलापन था। और प्राग के गरीबी के दिन थे। उससे ज्यादा कुछ नहीं। दोबारा पढ़ा।

और अब चुप हूं। इसमें अकेलापन उस तरह नहीं है जो निर्मल वर्मा की दूसरी कहानियों में है। इसमें अकेलापन है जो दो लोगों के बीच में पनपता है। जब दो लोग मिलते हैं और उसे धीमे धीमे अपने हाथों से, सांस से बड़ा करते हैं। जैसे कि बर्फ में snowman बनाना। जानते हुए कि वो पिघल जाएगा। वो कुछ देर का धोखा। एक उड़ता हुआ सुख।

अब दोबारा पढ़ने पर लगता है कि उनका पहला उपन्यास ये था। प्रेम की लौ में तपता हुआ। दूसरे से जुड़ जाने की लालसा से भरा हुआ। जो घट रहा है, उसमें अपने होने को कुरेदता हुआ। क्या घटता है उस लम्हें में जब सांस भारी होती है। आस पास कौनसी आवाजें, रोशनी, हवा, सब मिलकर वो लम्हा इतना ठोस बना देती हैं कि जब कोई कहता है कि - सुनो... और हमारी पूरी देह, ये जानते हुए भी कि ये बीत चुका है, ये उपन्यास है, ये झूठ है, सुनने के लिए मजबूर हो जाती है जो उस समय घट रहा है।

क्या इसे पकड़ा जा सकता है? या फिर बार बार लौटना पड़ेगा? उड़ते हुए सुख को टटोलने के लिए।

प्राग शहर में एक भारतीय प्रवासी लड़के को पहली बार इंटरप्रेटर का काम मिलता है जिसमें उसे एक ऑस्ट्रिया की महिला के साथ तीन दिन रहना होता है जिसका एक छोटा सा बेटा भी है। तीन दिन के लिए कैरेक्टर को पढ़ते पढ़ते हो सकता है आप ख़ुद को कुरेदने लगे,हो सकता है आप भी अपनी स्मृतियों के पत्थर पर लिखे कुछ नाम को उँगलियों के पोर से छूने लगे, हो सकता है प्राग और इस किताब के कैरेक्टर आपके स्मृतियों का हिस्सा बन जाये इसीलिए भी पन्नों को पलटते हुए शब्दों के तरफ़ रुख़ करिए अच्छा लगेगा । सारे कैरेक्टर अपने साथ स्मृतियों की ज़िम्मेदारी भी अपने कंधों पर रखे हुए दिखेंगे। इस उपन्यास में लेखन की वजह से चरित्र,चित्र और स्मृतियाँ सब “विविड” है।

स्मृतियों के बीच स्मृतियाँ बनते देख शब्दों के द्वारा घटनाओं की बुनावट अचरज में डालती है ऐसा लगता है धीरे धीरे प्राग शहर कैरेक्टर के साथ बहा ले जा रहा है वहाँ की ठंड हवाओं में। कैरेक्टर्स का चलना ऐसा महसूस कराता है कि आप भी गिर रही बर्फ़ के बीच में आँख बंद कर बस सुनना चाहते है जो कैरेक्टर बोल रहा है महसूस करना चाहते है रायना की मुस्कुराहट।

“एक उम्र के बाद तुम घर वापस नहीं जा सकते। तुम उसी घर मैं वापस नहीं जा सकते, जैसे जब तुमने उसे छोड़ा था।”

“यह असम्भव-सा लगता है कि जिस घड़ी तुम सो रहे हो उस घड़ी कोई तुम्हारी बाट जोह रहा हो…तुम्हें अचानक पहली बार अपनी अनिवार्यता का पता चलता है।”

This book is special. I first came across a short review in May'21 during the pandemic. It was difficult to procure it then. What attracted me initially was the city it described. Then in July 2024, I went to Prague and spent a few days. As is my habit, I love to read books based on cities that I have travelled to. After I came back, I remembered that this book was based in Prague and somehow found it. Needless to say, I resonated with the city tales. This could be read as a biographical narrative. Nirmal Verma writes about his days as an international student in Prague, trying to make ends meet by becoming a part time interpreter at a local tourist agency. His struggles back then for survival detailing the cold nights and rationing for food, everything came to life through his writing. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this charming old European hasn't changed at all in the sixty odd years that as it was experienced by him. I felt familiar with the places and streets he narrated so vividly.

It feels wonderful to find a book with stories that retain their appeal after so many decades. He brings Prague to life with his anecdotes. This was my first Nirmal Verma book and I look forward to reading more from him.

कमरे में तेज रोशनी थी, खिड़की के बाहर दिल्ली के शुरुआती गर्मी के दिनों की धूप खिल रही थी। मैंने किताब के पन्ने पलटे— वे दिन। कुछ कहानियाँ पढ़ने से ज्यादा महसूस की जाती हैं, और यह उन्हीं में से एक थी। पृष्ठ दर पृष्ठ एक अजीब सी चुप्पी थी, जो शब्दों के पीछे छुपी थी—पात्रों की हँसी, उनकी उदास आँखें, उनकी अनकही बेचैनी। ऐसा लगा, जैसे मैं किसी भूले-बिसरे रास्ते पर लौट रहा हूं, जहाँ हर मोड़ पर बीते दिनों की हल्की परछाईं होती है। निरर्थक प्रतीत होने वाली साधारण घटनाओं के बीच जीवन अपनी सबसे गहरी पीड़ा और सबसे कोमल प्रेम को किस तरह सहेजता है... निश्चल प्रेम और बीतते समय की टीस से भरी यह कहानी किसी पुराने प्रेम-पत्र की तरह थी—जिसे बार-बार पढ़ने का मन करता, फिर भी हर बार एक नया दर्द दे जाती। यह निर्मल वर्मा के इस उपन्यास का सार है।

Hindi is my third language, and I have always wanted to explore literature in Hindi because I grew up watching Hindi movies and listening to Hindi songs. This work by Nirmal Verma has already become my favorite among all the languages I have explored. The writer has explored loneliness, love, and the atmosphere of the novel so profoundly that he takes you all the way to his time in Prague, where the winter is cold and the world feels distant, quiet, and beautifully melancholic.

On this Sunday I was reading an article on The Indian Express and I came to know about this book and it's unique was so I chose to read the book. The book is so beautifully written by Nirmal Verma. I'm so amazed and thrilled the way love between the protagonists. And in the end part of the book I couldn't take my eyes away from the book. This book is going to be in my head forever.
