I really wanted to like this!

The premise of this story was what drew me in. I kept waiting for the truth to come out, for the story to build but it wasn’t until the very end that things came to light and it just seemed so unrealistic. In addition, there were a lot of errors regarding hockey and the actual game itself. It made me question the validity of the author and that trickled to the actual characters and their connection.

Am I in a reading slump or is everyone in bookworm baddies giving me bad book reccs???

I’m so confused.

The plot line sounded good but the execution wasn’t good. The characters were not good. I love a strong woman who prioritizes her career just as much as I love a strong woman who prioritizes children over a career. But you know what I dont love?? A woman who dumps her kid on her parents to live her best life without him.

The male mc also genuinely just unlikable. I can’t think of a character I actually liked in this book. I didn’t even like the child in the book bc why tf was his name Carl. Carl is the name of my 60 year old great uncle who lives in a camper, smells like spoiled milk, and screams at liberals. Not the name of a child.

What a surprise...

Rating 4.3
WOW, what a surprise. It's not a surprise like I was shocked at how the story ended up. My surprise came from how I didn't think I was going to like the book when I got about a quarter of the way in but then it totally turned me around.

Reggie is a hotshot NHL player who carries a heavy load of baggage from his childhood which causes him to distance himself from anyone and everything. Finding himself in his final year of the NHL, he realizes that his poor reputation is costing him dearly. He doesn't seem to care that he has developed no close relationships with anyone on or off the ice, and women seem to be a dime a dozen for him. He uses them for what he wants and then moved on to the next without batting an eye. What he has also realized, however, is that sponsorships are few and far between, if any, and as his agent consistently reminds him, he will be out of money in 10 years. So, the plan is to have him interviewed for an online profile by a magazine. Their intent is to dig deeply into his life and what has made him the person he is today. On the other hand, his plan is to lie his way through, Keeping his secrets in tact.

In walks Harper, assigned to write the profile on this man that she has never met… Or so she thought.

Seven years prior, Harper was a senior at NYU and was pushed into attending a Halloween party with her roommate. With everyone wearing masks, She met a man who stirred something inside her. Something that was never before challenged. She liked the idea of this man taking charge, giving her what she needed, while taking what he wanted.

He left her with the feeling that attending the Halloween party wasn't quite so bad at all. He also left her with a gift of a son born nine months later. Unfortunately, they never exchanged full names and the only thing she knew about him was a birthmark on his upper thigh... The same birthmark which appears on her son's thigh as well.

Harper and Reggie's professional relationship starts out beyond rocky, with Reggie angry at every question I asked, and Harper more adamant with every refusal to get the story she needs in order to secure her promotion and the dream of being able to fully support her and her son.

As their relationship develops, Harper rates through Reggies hardened shell and little by little he seems to become more human. Their relationship becomes intimate, but from each perspective it seems more like an extended one night stand with neither one expecting anything long lasting. However, as they are professional relationship grows, so does their personal one.

As Harper makes the connection between Reggie and her son Carl, she is conflicted by his consistent acknowledgments that he does not want a long-standing relationship with anyone for fear that he will father a child and the cycle of abuse will continue. At his proclamation, he sees great sadness in Harper's eyes and she admits that she is missing her son. Although that's true, that's only part of the reason for her emotional outburst.

Having requested that the magazine fly her son out to spend some time with her since she has been gone for so long, but being told that it is not in the budget, she is surprised when the magazine agrees to do so, however, she quickly learns that it's not because of an influx of cash in the budget but more so a donation from none other than Reggie.

Surprisingly, Reggie takes a great liking to Harper's son, Carl, enjoys spending time with him and doling out what would be considered fatherly advice. Needless to say, because of Reggie's tumultuous upbringing, Harper is still concerned.

I have to say that the first part of the book was interesting and then I got to where I did not enjoy the spicy parts being so dominated by Reggie. It was as though she was following his every command and that seemed a little off for me. However, as her interviews with Reggie continued and his walls started coming down, I saw a change in him and her as well. I enjoyed seeing how he handled confrontation without his usual violent outburst. I saw a loving, kind man who was cognizant of his despicable childhood, the horrendous experiences he endured and yet the love and kindness that he displayed to his newfound child.

I have to admit that I really did enjoy the last half of the book immensely. I loved the turnaround that Reggie made and I could understand how breaking down those walls had him seeing the world and people in a different light.

Although, I assumed that the book would have a happily ever after, I was a little concerned when Reggie observed corals birthmarks and although the information was somewhat sketchy in his mind, he began to put two into together. He realized that it had to be more than a coincidence since his grandfather, his father and himself all had the same birthmark. Now he was faced with with his own son who carried the same birthmark as well.

The book was well worth the read. I'm glad I pushed through and got to the other side!

Thank you to AJ Summers for allowing me to read a copy of this book. This was an interesting twist to the secret baby trope. However, I didn't like how little Reggie's hockey life was showcased. I personally thought that it was something that could have been taken out and would have been better. However, this story was interesting. I don't think that I'll read it again, but it was a quick, interesting read.

Did he nit realize 'hey, this kid looks just like me' the first time he saw the kid? It took him seeing the birthmark of all things to recognize his kid?!?! Jesus.

The smut with the MMC was SOOO damn good. At least until he started to change and went all soft. That made me want to cry.

I've always loved the surprise kid / pregnancy trope. 'Cause I love the reactions when the guy finds out. His reaction was definitely on par for his personality. The only thing I didn't like was her saying she didn't want him rubbing off on her kid because of MMC dad she was afraid the MMC would change her son. When the actual reason was he didn't want kids, she didn't see a point in telling him when it would change nothing. It was the MMC that thought if he had a kid the kid would end up being fucked up because HE believed HE was too fucked up. She didn't think that of him, so IDK why when he asked why she didn't tell him, she told him that. She thought her and the kid would get hurt.

Overall it was a really great book. I devoured it in like 3 hours. I thought there would be more groveling honestly. I was sad there wasn't. But I really enjoyed reading the growth of the MMC from this completely closed off, angry, sexual guy to a guy who started enjoying his team, the fans, and his woman. :D

this had potential to be so much better than what it was. i wanted so much more. i wanted there to be fun and banter and romance. this isn’t even a dark romance. it’s supposed to just be a grumpy guy romance. and i get that like the whole deal is that harper thinks other guys won’t be able to give her the sex she wants, but that’s literally the foundation of her relationship with reg.

like yes, eventually we see him caring about her/their son and saying he wants to be family or whatever, but like…why?? they haven’t really spent much time together, and every time harper is with them, they’re either arguing or fucking.

which is fine, but like…i’d like more if i’m supposed to believe they’re in love.

also i feel like this book should get points for one of the hotter lines i’ve read recently, which is “we both know you’re better at taking orders than asking for what you need.”

and then like 5 minutes later, this author made me read “just watching him move makes my panties moist” with my own eyes. why? why this sentence? it’s horrible.

This was an enemies to lovers secret baby bad boy sports romance.

I really liked this unique take on the secret baby trope. Very well written with complex characters. Would recommend!

Harper Morris is a sports journalist. She has a son named Carl. She needs a promotion in order to send her son to an all boys private school. She is a type A personality and needs to control most areas of her life.

Reggie Turner is a right winger for the New York Rangers. He will be retiring soon and needs brand endorsements. He is originally from Boston where his father Grayson Green is a drug kingpin. He is angry, arrogant and a loner.

While in college Harper and her roommate Carol attended a masked Halloween party. Harper hooked up with a boy and became pregnant.

Seven years later Harper is sent to do a profile on Reggie. They clash massively and Reggie tries to get someone else assigned. Harper is supposed to spend 2 months interviewing and following him around to write the profile. Reggie initially fights her at every step while at the same time trying to seduce her. They eventually hook up and he starts opening up to her after the first installment is published and he sees the positive effect. Her son is flown in and Reggie hits it off with him. By that time Harper knows Reggie is her son's father. Reggie sees an identifying birthmark on her son and realized he is the boy's father. They break up and she goes home to finish the profile. After Reggie sees the final piece he goes to Harper, they reconcile and get their HEA.

Another great story line by A J Summers! This story has an interesting beginning on how these two meet and don’t know it till years later. Then after years later a small secret is revealed that shocks them both. It's a heartwarming romance with a strong and stubborn couple that both banter extremely well till it turns into hot spicy chemistry.

Reggie, a playboy hockey player with a grumpy disposition and a dark side and then there is Harper, a single mom who’s strong and domineering who only wants the best for her and her son. Put Reggie and Harper together and the author has created an explosive relationship that you can’t wait to see where she will take these two next in her story. There are plot twists throughout the story that you didn’t see coming for Reggie. It’s the ultimate of surprise and so well written.

This book is sensational with a beautiful touching ending. I truly love that A J has continued the hockey series and can’t wait to see where she goes from here. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. I highly recommend to read.

When Harper goes to a Halloween party with her friend, she hopes to leave it quickly. Its a masked party so when a guy comes on to her, she doesn't know who he is but is attracted to him all the same. Its not long before they share an amazing time together. However, Harper learns not long after that she is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is because they never shared names. Now years later Harper is doing a piece on professional hockey player Reggie, and she is struggling to get him to work with her. Soon things change between them, and Harper has to bring her son along while she followed Reggie for the interview. Harper something when the three of them are together but doesn't know what to say about it. Will Reggie give her a chance to explain things? Will this be something more between them?

This is a great story that will draw you in from the first chapter on. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.

My husband told me to give characters a chance before I DNF. Maybe their arc is part of the plot... it wasn't.. She has a baby with a stranger. Nothing wrong there, shit happens. She finds out the father is the man she's meant to profile in her magazine. Okay, we're still good. Kept reading, waiting for her to have the "you're the father" convo... she continues to sleep with him and write about him... still waiting. Nothing! At 85%ish (not enough time for this fucking asshole to arc!), it comes out via matching birthmarks. He's rightfully pissed. He confronts her, and this bitch oooooh this bitch says she didn't tell him because of how he grew up (not good). Like through association his past would rub off on her son. I about threw the fucking kindle. How about she's trash for sleeping with him and writing about him even after knowing their connection? How about that?!! My god, as a reader, I just want to somewhat like the main characters. Is it too much!?

I found this a poorly written mess, with thin characters and a highly improbable premise. Harper and Reggie have sex two minutes after meeting each other at a party (literally, like two minutes). They are both wearing masks, and no names are exchanged. Harper becomes a single mother due to their tryst, and seven years go by before she reencounters Reggie. Reggie is now a hotshot professional hockey player, and she has been tasked with writing a profile about him. We are supposed to believe that she can drop life for a month as a single mother and follow around a hockey player for a story. In what world? It isn't until they have sex again that Harper realizes Reggie is her baby daddy.

I rarely rate a book one star, but I really hated this story. The characters were unlikable (especially Reggie), and the writing wasn't enjoyable.

OMG this book was good it was mind blowing. It was addicted and it was steamy page turner and the suspense was WOW! I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down. Reggie was the bad boy hockey player getting ready to retire and Harper was the one that is going to help him change his reputation image and secure his future. The physical attraction and the chemistry between them steamy and spicy of temptation. Reggie and Harper have a one-night stand passion . When Harper finds out she is pregnant everything changes. Fast forward to 7 years later and Harper who is single and trying to raise her son on her own. She never thought that she will see him again. Was her son a secret or will he find the truth about her son will he see if this child was his or not? Will there be a Happily ever after for them all.
I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This book was amazing from the start I was addicted and wanted to see what came next. Reggie was exactly what Harper wanted and needed. He’s a strong dominant alpha playboy who only does one night stand and wants nothing more because of everything he endured growing up until he meets her the one who drives him crazy and he can’t get enough. She’s a single mom hiding behind clothes not to get attention because she knows no one is going to understand what she needs until she meets him the one that can read her just by looking at her and knows what she wants. The connection and passion between them is like fire. The way Reggie is drawn to Carl even without knowing that’s his son when they first meet and the way he melts his dark heart is amazing.

THIS BOOK WAS SOOOO GOOD!!!

This story had so much gooey goodness going on! The story line was intriguing and hooked me so well I literally gobbled this book up in less than a day. It had heat, passion, fear, triump and victory all wrapped up in an exciting story that also almost brought me to tears…when an author brings strong emotion out of me? I’m hooked for life.
These two were from different world and both had stepped up of their comfort zones when 1st they met. Went their separate ways only for our h, Harper, to discover she is pregnant. Fast forward 7yrs and see them meeting up again. I thought he was going to recognize his son as his on 1st sight but that’s not how it went down.
All in all a solid 4.5 star read. I loved this book and this author. Im instantly following and happy to check out her back catalogue!!

Another great story by A J Summers. Harper is a reporter tasked to get a profile done on a notoriously closed off and private NHL player, Reggie. They are both instantly attracted to each other, and there is something about them that causes both to act differently than they normally would. Harper is able to not only find and pull out secrets from Reggie’s past, but she is able to see it and word it in a way that helps heal him in the process. I really enjoyed this read, and was excited to uncover all of Reggie’s layers.
Characters from The Pucking Fake Boyfriend briefly show up in this story as well (Love this one too ;).

You absolutely HOOKED me from page 1 A J and didn't let go until the end with this WONDERFUL book.
Reggie and Harper have a one-night stand of love making. When Harper finds out she is pregnant everything changes. Fast forward to 7 years later and Harper who is single and trying to raise her son on her own. What she never expected was to see the man she had sex with and the father of her son again and look out because this book is going to start to get HOT and I mean HOT. I don't want to spoil anything else for you, but I can guarantee you will fall in Love with Reggie even though he can be a pain and Harper's stories.

What I thought about the story- If you hold on, Reggie actually becomes likable. But I don’t like that it was the miracle of facing his past via a reporter that did it instead of therapy. That seemed too convenient. Still, the story was pretty good and it was very hawt.
What I thought about the narrator- the narrator was fine, but not great. I think this story calls for dual narration.

I didn’t really like it

This book had the potential to be so good. Mystery man hookup. Suddenly finding out the father by a birth mark. Big brooding man with tattoos but secretly a softy. Where this book fell short was first that little boys name 🤭 I mean all the names in the world you picked Carl to name the kid? I wanted to stop reading at that point lol….. but I digress. The h came off as sleezy I just couldn’t vibe with her and there was to much sex and not getting to the heart of things. Don’t want to read the other books because nothing stands out when reading about the plot.

Another bad boy and in hockey no less. This is the second book in this three book series and was read out of order. As with most series characters are introduced in each book with the emphasis staying with the main characters, in this story the main characters take a truly front and center position in this tale. They are very developed but it does take a while to discover all their secrets. There are some revelations that you can see coming but like with an accident, it’s hard to look away. There are also some facets of the story that make the up the ah hah moment when it is discovered. Not wanting to give anything away it was a real page turner.

Sometimes it's all about being in the right place at the right time.

Harper and Reggie met at a Halloween party during their college days and that night produced Carl, their son.

Life moved on and Harper and Reggie met again. Neither realized that they met before.

I loved how AJ wrote this enemies-to-lovers story and how each of the characters grew through the pain of their past.

Reggie had a mountain of it.

Reggie's character changed the most in my mind and for that I love him for it!

I listened to the audiobook and could barely put it down. The narrator was perfect in her roles as each of the characters.

Another must-read and listen to!

This is a well written, well narrated sports themed, suprise baby romance read that that follows NHL hockey pro Reggie and magazine profile author Harper. While initally they mix like oil and water, slowly their dynamic changes and the chemistry that's been simmering all along implodes but that's not the only thing. Masked halloween parties from college come back with consequences that neither were prepared for...overall a good balance of captivating storyline and characters as well as sizzling, steamy chemistry. I enjoyed this listen and look forward to more!

A fantastic 5 star afternoon read

Totally loved Reggie & Harper's story. Their story is 7 years in the making & it all started with a one night stand. He's a grumpy hockey player trying to improve his image before retirement & she's the reporter tasked with writing said article. The author has created a brilliant dynamic between the two that had me laughing in parts. She discovers that this grump is her son's father, will she tell him or not?.

Surprise from Seven Years Ago

Wow, from the beginning there is steam coming off the pages. Harper ends up pregnant after having a one-night stand with a masked stranger seven years prior to her career boosting assignment. Reggie is need of positive PR in order to retire with endorsement options and needs to rely on Harper's journalist perspective to do so. This story is an emotional journey of surprising revelations and accepting the truth.

Let’s see - grumpy alpha, single mom to his secret baby, hockey, and transforming the guy that grew up in an abusive environment? It’s THE PUCKING BAD BOY, and it’s all good.

The story is well written with the kind of purposeful transformation that could be considered inspiring. When we first meet Reggie he seems very insightful about people and their motivations. Harper turns that around on him in the best way revealing a character to admire. What kept me reading was how he was going to react to his son and it was not a disappointment.

minimal use of contractions

The story line for the most part was decent, but the sentences didn’t feel real for an inner dialogue. Maybe it’s laziness, but I don’t speak or think without contractions. I don’t say “had not/cannot/have not/I am/etc”. I shorten things, especially when I’m thinking something so it was a bit of a struggle for me to get through the writing that way.

As for the storyline, just frustrating how it played out with her telling him about his son. A bit too shady for my liking and ending after seemed a bit rushed. Otherwise it’s a decent hockey book.

Harper and Reggie

She’s a reporter sent to write some articles to make his reputation better. He’s a grumpy hockey player on the verge of retiring.

They had a one night stand at a Halloween party and they were masked and didn’t know each other. Six years later they are reunited and she figures out he is her son’s father by their obvious magnetism and a vase shaped birthmark on both their thighs.

I liked their dynamic and how it was explained why they had their kinks. He was a total jerk in the beginning and you see him soften.

Some stories just got the WOW and this one certainly has that in spades.
I loved the storyline, the characters, beauties and the brawns... i.e. the leading characters and the - on the side - characters that are so necessary to make a good story. This one has it all. Fabulous five stars is what I very gladly rate this story.

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. I instantly was invested in the characters. I am usually not a fan of single parent but this book has changed that. Reggie is the bad boy hockey player getting ready to retire and Harper is the one to help him change his image and secure his future. They both eventually discover they met 7 years ago. This is definitely one of my new all time favorites!.
