This is a cute book, but it does have death in it. It was kind of weird that Ariel's mother would die by going back for a music box and then it was just kind of glossed over. I know it's a kids' book, but it could have been written differently, maybe. It is a lengthier read and my 3 year old lost interest during the long passages and would often turn the page before I could finish reading that section.

This book has bright pictures that reflect the text. Some of the words may be challenging for young children. This story is full of suspense and adventure. Children will enjoy the adventure and familiarity of disobeying and the consequences they may bring.

I'm sure an adaptation of a straight-to-DVD release of the same name, still you could almost argue the plot is equivalent to the original movie. The book is fairly readable out loud and the art isn't horrendous, though I'm still not quite sure what the villain's chief henchman is. Maybe a manatee.
