Monster Girls in Space #5

Gathering Strength

Rate this book
Less than two months into his ten years of active-duty service to the Hegemony of Velvet Stars as an adept, and Desmond McLaughlin has already gotten himself embroiled in even more trouble.

He's settled in just fine aboard his ship, the Fist of Defiance, and made plenty of friends. But it wouldn't be life if there weren't a few bad apples mixed in. Having clashed several times—once in a very physical fashion—with Adept Windracer, Desmond can only hope that the overly aggressive Uth'ra will stop trying to force him into the mold that she believes a male should occupy.

Additionally, more information is coming to light about the strange group he and his instructor had fought with that had been occupying a Rift. A group that had no proper reason to be there beyond trouble, and were suspiciously short on identifying information on their persons. The rabbit-hole only grows deeper as Desmond continues to stumble upon clues, passing them along up the chain of command in hopes that someone will act before it is too late.

Things are picking up strength as Desmond and the girls start to get a view of what is at stake. Unwilling to simply allow himself to be swept along with the tide, Arsenal continues to prepare and train themselves, gathering strength for the challenges that stand ahead of them both as an adept and his guards, and as a clan.

*** Monster Girls In Space is a Sci-Fi, fantasy, semi-military, men’s romance, progression fantasy about a man becoming a space-wizard amongst a universe full of monster girls (it’s in the title, you should have expected that part). Expect adventure, mischief, magic, fighting, and unconventional relationships in a galaxy that is curious what sort of mischief Humanity will get up to.

A solid volume. We get more context for the ongoing conflict and the new cast members were all good. Continues to take its time on the romance front, pacing out additions. I do miss Monika though. Looking forward to book 6.

Absorbing and engaging

Alternate universe, advanced technology, interstellar empires, harem adult situations

Desmond and his team continue to serve aboard Fist of Defiance, seeing action against Rift monsters and terrorists bent on tearing down the Hegemony.

While I greatly enjoyed this novel, I absolutely oppose Faye's idea that torture is useful. That is a discredited belief that it ever yields actionable intelligence; people will say anything to end the pain, and those who employ such tactics already have a bias they want confirmed. They are also more likely to believe that breaking the law to uphold the law is a thing; it is not. I have no issue with killing those who seek to destroy and murder civilians. But with diligence, good intelligence can be obtained. That's called police work.

This is book 5 is a very engaging series. I waited with excitement until the novel became available, bought it , and devoured it, even knowing it would be months before the next one would drop. The writing is amazing. Each member of Desmond's team is unique and memorable. The action and pacing snap. The world-building, or in this case, the universe building, is believable. Now I must wait for the next tome to be written. Eagerly.

It was a tough choice to got either 5 stars or 4 stars.

If the book was virtually stand alone and a certain plot thread had not be broached in the previous book it would be 5 stars. However since the plot thread was presented in the previous book and was not even addressed in this book, the frustration wants me to 3 star it.

The thread being the possibility of regrowth of Sasha's arm was not even talked about. The previous book, it was presented, then left hanging, this book at the ability to pickup on this concept a couple of times and was not even mentioned again. Even if the concept is just tested on a friend, an injured bystander, prisoner, or crew and the results presented to Sasha, that would atleast tie the thread up.

I am looking forward to the next part of the story, even with that loose plot thread tickling me

A fun and oddly deep story

I came to this series of books expecting the standard fare of junk food one expects from hlit...I was left stunned by the full course feast that the author has crafted. Each story is jam packed with fun, thrills and gorgeous muscle waifus to delight anyone. Still sad the squad will cap in the next addition but 6 waifus is good enough. Wonder if with the next book the 5 ladies will have a chance to defeat Helm, I doubt it but it will be fun to read and laugh at their failure again. Also the use of pop culture so skillfully is a treat, I highly recommend this series.

This was yet another strong entry in the series, though it ultimately didn't feel like it moved the needle that far forward.

The MC ends up taking on a secret agent and her ward into his personal guard as they attempt to get to the bottom of the cult the MC found evidence of. The ward is a lamia type woman, so snake from the hips down. Not my cup of tea, but she was decent. Better than the probably 6th guard I thought would be 5th at the end of the last book.

I am interested in seeing where this plot is going, and hopefully it moves further forward in the next book.

Awesome

This series has become my second favorite series in the genre. Only narrowly surpassed by a Daniel schinhofen series. But if it keeps going like this, i may have to switch favorites. I really can't find anything to complain about with this series. The MC isn't an idiot or narcissist. The females are smart and play a real role in the story. I am very much looking forward to and impatiently waiting for the next book.

simply the best sci fi series imo

The 5th book was as expected just as stellar as the rest of the series, with Desmond and his aresenal getting deeper into trouble, secrets getting unveiled and picking up new members to fill out his hare- I mean team.

I genuinely adore this book series and cant put it into words just how much I love these books. Can’t wait to read more

I couldn’t put it down once again great writing that captures your imagination and pushes you to check your own biases to see the truth in who people are not where they came from! Loved every minute till the end of course there has to be a stopping point but did it have to come so soon can’t wait to see what’s next!!!

Yay! Another year installment

This was a fun read. I think I read it a bit too fast, so I am going to re-read it.
Figured out elements a bit quickly, but was great and an absolute delight to read.

Series still amazing!

The main character Desmond remains on point with his own goals and beliefs whilst still adjusting to the ever increasing levels of responsibility that hard earned success brings.

Great addition

It has been a while since I read book 4. I really appreciate the author for starting with both a recap and a reminder that they tag the spicy scenes so they can be skipped. I am looking forward to book 4.
