Ani DiFranco è una delle cantautrici di punta della nuova scena musicale americana; grintosissima musicista e orgogliosa produttrice indipendente, in una decina d’anni (ha cominciato giovanissima girando per i pub di tutto lo Stato di New York armata solo della sua chitarra) si è conquistata un folto stuolo di fan in patria, e da qualche anno ha conquistato con la sua miscela incendiaria di folk-rock anche il pubblico italiano.
Questo libro raccoglie, in esclusiva mondiale, le sue poesie, alcune del tutto inedite, altre già registrate nei suoi album (dove diventano vere e proprie performance sul genere “poetry slam”); i testi di Ani sono acutissimi, ironici, arrabbiati: raccontano – dal punto di vista di una giovane donna che sa di avere nella propria femminilità al tempo stesso una debolezza e una forza – l’America di oggi, quella della falsa democrazia, del fascino dilagante per le armi, dello smarrimento dopo l’Undici Settembre. Lontana dai facili proclami politici di cui a volte il rock si infarcisce la bocca, alla banalità dello slogan Ani DiFranco preferisce costantemente l’intelligenza della metafora, e usa le parole con la sapienza sottile e agguerrita della vera poetessa.

Il libro, con testi originali a fronte, è accompagnato da un’intervista esclusiva alla cantante e da otto suoi disegni.

Although the “poems” were almost entirely Ani Difranco song lyrics that have been around for a long time, with the exception of three or four poems of no more than four lines, I did like this book because it had English on the left pages and that text translated into Italian on the right hand pages. It was fun to work out what words corresponded, and the sentence structure. The interview at the end of the book was also somewhat interesting.

many of di francos powerful, awesome lyrics in Italian. what a beautiful language. luckily, it is translated into English on every other page, so that I can actually also understand the meaning of those beautiful Italian words. yes yes yes!
