Everyone knows the golden rule of business: don’t bang your business partner. Especially if he’s your brother’s hot-as-sin, hockey-star best friend.
But when the sexy single dad athlete saves me from a cake contest catastrophe—and shows me how good he is with his hands—I blurt out the world’s worst business pitch: Want to invest in my bakery?
With no loan or backup plan, this is my last shot at proving I’m more than my past mistakes, and shockingly, he says yes.
We set one rule: don’t mix business with pleasure. Except Corbin Knight’s impossible to resist.
When he’s not scoring goals, he’s staying up late with me to test tempting recipes. Braiding my hair before we bake like it’s foreplay. Giving me his jersey to wear to games.
I try to keep a professional distance from the bossy, possessive and dangerously flirty hockey player, but soon we’re testing the limits of the kitchen counter.
This bakery is my chance to finally get my life right, so I fight the messy feelings. Until one night, he shows up after closing and admits he can’t stop thinking about me.
Suddenly I’m ready to break every rule—no matter the cost to our dreams.
And breaking the rules has never tasted so good.
This is Corbin and Mabel's romance. Tropes include: Brother's best friend, single dad, workplace romance, hockey, the one who got away, love letters

They've known each other for a while, but they've kept their feelings hidden. Mabel and Corbin always had something for each other. The fact that Theo was her older brother and Corbin's hockey team general manager and because Corbin had a hectic schedule and a daughter to raise, pushed things to remain at a platonic level.
Their common passion for baking lead to a deal, which was presented by Theo, from which both Mabel and Corbim could win. But what will that close proximity mean for them? Will they be able to keep at bay their burning feelings and just be parteners in that business?
First of all, this book got me craving all those delicious things mentioned in this book, because of how well they were depicted. Yummy! Second of all, how sweet, fun and tensioned the connection between Corbin and Mabel was! Phew!🔥 Even from the first scene they've shared together you could clearly feel that there was something more between them. I enjoyed so much those stolen glances and touches, like they were constantly drawn to each other. But they didn't feel like they were in the right time of their lives for a relationship. Or were they?🤭 I liked the awesome presence of Corbin's daughter, who was super smart and really fun.
This was such a wonderful and fun read, having a bit of everything in it. I liked that it was focused on the character's growth and on understanding their feelings, not focusing only on their physical connection. I also loved those mysterious love letters, which were a great addition to the romantic vibe of this story.
Of course, I couldn't forget about our lovely narrators, Samantha Brentmore and Teddy Hamilton, who did such an incredible job with this story, being completely captivated by them. As usual, I loved how expressive and full of passion their interpretation was and how lovely and fun it was to listen to them.
I must thank Hambright Pr for this amazing opportunity, for offering me this e-ARC and ALC of this fun book!💞

Oh my gosh. Talk about one of the BEST single-dad romances I’ve ever read. He’s also her brother’s best friend! Talk about some swoons tropes.
Mabel is recovering from her ex’s attempt to publicly humiliate her on reality TV but enter Corbin Knight. Hot pro hockey player who swoops in and rescues Mabel. They’ve known each other for 7 years because he’s also Mabel’s big brother’s best friend but now that they’re reconnecting, sparks are flying EVERYWHERE! They literally have a moment in the on set trailer but are like, whoa this cannot happen between us. Mabel, also realizing they shouldn’t be getting hot and heavy, decides to ask Corbin to go into business with her and help her open her new bakery! And get this, Corbin knows how to bake too!
The sweetest and sexiest story starts to unfold and Corbin literally can’t keep his hands off of Mabel. They’re LITERALLY always together and then every time they have a hot and steamy session, they look at each other and are like, ok this can’t happen again. 🤣 Even after 5 more times they’re like, ok we need to stop…we’re business parters. Yeah right!
It’s so cute reading the back and forth and the spice was so good. There’s an actual fuck it moment. The old firehouse that Mabel’s grandmother left her gets turned into their bakery and Mabel has to struggle up get the whole town to rally behind it. Thanks to Corbin and his super smart daughter, the bakery has some luck!
I also loved the lost love letters! Gotta read this. Lauren Blakely knows how to check alllll the boxes every time and I’m so excited for this new hockey romance series!

This book was cute, fluffy, low-stakes, and an easy listen. This is a sweet sports romance featuring a baker and a hockey player, which honestly tells you everything you need to know about the vibes. There’s chemistry, banter, and just enough tension to keep things moving without ever getting stressful.
The duet audiobook narration is a huge plus. Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton are absolute staples in the romance audiobook world, and they once again deliver a smooth, engaging performance. Both narrators bring warmth and charm to their characters, making the story easy to sink into and perfect for listening while doing literally anything else. Also, bloopers were included at the end and they were hilarious. More of this!!
If you’re in the mood for a feel-good sports romance that doesn’t ask too much of you emotionally and just wants to be fun, this one hits the spot. Low angst, high charm, and narrators you can always trust.

💬 Damn, this was sickeningly adorable and I ATE. IT. UP 😂
So very specific rec: if you had the hots for Shawn from Psych (but who didn't 🤤), but wished he was a hockey playing baker with dirty mouth and a 12 year old daughter then this is the book for you. Sadly there is no Gus equivalent character....well, maybe his daughter Charlotte? Sorta?
Everything was just so funny and adorable and still SO HOT lol.
Several things stick out that I liked: ✨ That Corbin was an avid baker ✨ OMFG the letters 🥹 ✨ The flirty banter and how they didn't REALLY try to hide their interest ✨I know this will sound weird but I can't really explain it without giving away parts of the story but how Corbin is colorblind, and how it was used/referenced in the story.
Things that kept it from being a 5 ⭐, though was I felt like the third act drama didn't totally land from Corbin's side. There wasn't enough buildup in it in the story to make it believable to me.
I also thought the way things sort of got resolved with Mabel's mom seemed too fast/ unrealistic as well
I'm not really a dog person, so I could've done without the sub plot about fostering, but I'm sure that will be enjoyable for others.
Along with that, the hate from the town is weird. I grew up in a small town but I guess it wasn't that small but idk I find it strange just how much animosity they have for her
Oh...and the basting brush 😅🫠
This is still one of my faves for the month, and the narrators were INCREDIBLE 😩 PLUSSSSSSSS THERE'S BLOOPERS AT THE END hahahahaha
Another Super Cute and Sexy read from Lauren Blakely! This one is about Mabel, a hot mess of a woman whose dream it is to open her own bakery. Her brother is a GM of a local hockey team which his best friend plays on. Said best friend, Corbin, baked all the time with his momma, who has passed at this point. He also has a super smart daughter (hello single dad) who convinces him to start fostering dogs (because she wants to be a vet) (hello again dog lover!) Mabel needs capital to open a business, Corbin has money because -pro hockey player- so they go into business together. Well if they weren’t already off limits to each other (hi brothers best friend) they certainly are now (enter business partner/workplace romance). Mable is so endearing and relatable. Corbin is just absolutely swoon-worthy… not just because he’s a hockey player or because he’s ripped beyond belief… but because he’s a great guy and an excellent dad… oh and he likes to have control! Going to go melt now! Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton are fantastic together. I LOVE duet audiobooks but it’s even better when the narrators have chemistry. I really enjoy their performances on their own, but together… *chefs kiss*!!! The bloopers at the end were priceless! Thank you so much for the early copy of the ebook and the audiobook!
Umm where can I sign up for a Corbin Night?!😮💨 He was an absolute dream. Single dad+hockey+brothers best friend+baking was just so good! This was such a fun, cute read.
Corbin and Mabel were made for each other. They had great chemistry, I loved their friendship and banter, and the way these two fought their attraction for each other. This man was the epitome of a good guy. He was colorblind and lit learned and memorized the colors of all her favorite things. And he braids her hair and writes her love letters😭
Mabel is fighting for a fresh start and determined to prove she’s more than her past mistakes. Corbin is a hockey star, single dad, and a man she shouldn’t want. Especially since he’s her brother’s best friend and new business partner. They had one rule..no crossing the line.
I just loved this story and the authors writing. The audiobook was fantastic! Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmore did a great job at bringing these characters to life. This was a super long romance book, almost 500 pages and it really didn’t need to be. I just don’t think romance books need to be longer than 350 pages at most. Other than that I recommend picking this one up.
It releases on 1/21! Thank you to the author and netgalley for this ALC and ARC.
4.5⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ 🍰hockey 🍰single dad 🍰brothers best friend 🍰forced proximity 🍰fake dating
I was super excited to jump into this audiobook I received from @hambright_pr.
Don't mix business with pleasure. Everyone knows that. They especially know you don't hook up with your best friend's little sister. But single dad and pro hockey player Corbin can't resist the sparks between him and Mabel, especially when her brother encourages the two to go into business together. Something's on fire and it isn't the cupcakes.
The chemistry between these two was off the charts and I absolutely loved their banter. Also, of note, Charlotte, Corbin's daughter was a fantastic side character. I enjoyed every minute!
Mabel's passion is baking, and her dream is to open her own bakery. There's just one major snag... She needs an investor.
Corbin, a pro hockey player and baking enthusiast, steps in to help Mabel. He's best friends with Mabel's brother, so it makes sense to he helpful, right?
Between testing out recipes and sprucing up the shop, Mabel and Corbin blur the lines between business and pleasure...
Another smash hit from Lauren Blakely! I loved the banter and flirtatious energy between Mabel and Corbin, and their personalities meshed well. The plot flows seamlessly and is fast paced enough to keep readers hooked. Just Breaking the Rules is a romcom full of heart, laughs, and delicious spice!
First book of 2026 and it was a good one !! The audiobook version with Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmoor was to die for !!! He’s a hockey player , baker by hobby and her brothers best friend. Shes a baker trying to start her own bakery but having trouble getting funding.
She’s always been interested in him but it was forbidden. And he was also interested in her. For 7 years they ignored these feelings. Until they didn’t ….
ARC review**** . who doesn't love a hockey romance workplace romance brother's best friend single dad kind of vibe out of a book 10 out of 10 recommend. How they fighting each other off for their feelings Corbin was not again not again and breaking his promise to himself They both were. But the love letters was everything in the book your work is amazing you never disappoint
Lauren Blakely Just Breaking the Rules is the kind of romance that lures you in with cupcakes and hockey sticks and then quietly ruins your ability to be normal about fictional men who bake. Thank you to Lauren Blakely for my gifted ARC/ALC, which I inhaled like a stress snack and then immediately wanted to reread just to live in the vibes a little longer.
This is the first book in the Hockey Ever After series, and it sets the tone beautifully. The rule is simple. Don’t hook up with your business partner. The problem is that the business partner is Corbin Knight, a professional hockey player, single dad, and your brother’s best friend, which honestly feels like the universe daring everyone involved to make bad decisions. And bless them, they absolutely do.
Mabel is trying so hard to get her life back on track, and that effort shows on every page. She’s passionate about her bakery, bruised by past mistakes, and determined to prove she’s capable of building something that lasts. Watching her navigate that pressure while also dealing with a man who looks unfairly good in a hockey jersey and somehow even better covered in flour is both delightful and mildly stressful. Corbin, meanwhile, is the kind of romance hero who doesn’t need grand gestures to win you over. He shows up. He listens. He parents. He supports her dreams without trying to take them over. The bar is in hell, but he still manages to pole vault over it.
The chemistry is steady and delicious rather than frantic, which made the emotional payoff even better. Late night baking sessions, quiet conversations after closing time, hair braiding that absolutely counts as foreplay, and those small domestic moments that make you realize feelings are already involved long before anyone admits it. The workplace romance tension is handled really well, too. The stakes feel real, and the fear of losing the bakery gives weight to every almost-choice they make.
One of my favorite things about this story is how cozy it feels without losing its heat. It’s comforting but still spicy, soft but emotionally grounded. The love letters and the one who got away energy added just enough ache to balance the sweetness. And yes, I fully believe that breaking the rules has never tasted so good.
The audiobook experience deserves serious praise. Narrated by Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton, this is one of those performances where the voices feel perfectly cast. Samantha brings warmth, humor, and vulnerability to Mabel, making her inner doubts feel real without ever tipping into self pity. Teddy absolutely shines as Corbin, capturing that mix of confidence, tenderness, and quiet devotion that makes him so easy to fall for. His delivery during the softer moments, especially when Corbin is with his child or opening up emotionally, added layers I didn’t even realize I needed.
There’s a line that stuck with me long after I finished: “Breaking the rules has never tasted so good.” It perfectly sums up the book and also my reading experience.
If you love hockey romance, single dad heroes, brother’s best friend tension, workplace romances with real stakes, and stories that feel like a warm blanket but still make you blush, this one is absolutely worth your time. I’m already invested in this series and emotionally prepared to abandon responsibilities for the next installment.
Just Breaking the Rules was a fun and cute read. Corbin & Mabel were absolutely made for each other! They had great chemistry; I loved their friendship, their banter, and the way these two fought their attraction to each other…I smiled so much while reading this book.
Corbin was such a great guy. He is a successful hockey player but then agrees to open a bakery with his best-friend’s little sister, who he had been crushing on for years, just to help her out…man, this guy was the epitome of a good guy. Green flags were flying everywhere! I loved how, though he is colorblind, Corbin learned and memorized the colors of Mabel’s favorite things. And that love letter he wrote to her towards the end of the book…where can I get a Corbin Knight?! This man was an absolute dream. Finally, I really loved how great of a dad he was. His relationship with his daughter Charlotte and how encouraging he was of her dreams & independence, was great to see.
Mabel was a sweet FMC. After being dumped and publicly humiliated, Mabel returns home to her small town to open a bakery in the old firehouse her grandmother left her. Though she’s always had a crush on Corbin, Mabel feels like she is not good enough. Her life is too chaotic, and Corbin likes structure. But, Corbin, in all his goodness, shows Mabel that she is perfect just the way she is. I also loved how Mabel was able to help Corbin loosen up and make his mother’s dream of opening a bakery a reality.
Before I go, I must note that I really loved how Russ and Harriet’s love story mirrored Corbin and Mabels. That was such a cute addition to the story.
Lauren Blakely did it again! Overall, this was a great read. It was a swoon worthy, very steamy romance, with amazing characters, funny banter, and a love story about two people who were made for each other.
I would absolutely recommend this book for a light, cozy, weekend read.
𝔸𝕦𝕕𝕚𝕠𝕓𝕠𝕠𝕜: I always enjoy listening to Samantha and Teddy. They perfectly embodied the characters and made this a wonderful reading/listening experience.
Thank you @laurenblakelybooks for the #gifted ARC and ALC!

Brother’s best friend + hockey + baking + single dad is a combo that absolutely works here, and Just Breaking the Rules sets the tone for this series with charm, tension, and heart.
Mabel is fighting for a fresh start, determined to prove she’s more than her past mistakes. Corbin Knight is a hockey star, devoted single dad, and the last man she should ever want, especially since he’s her brother’s best friend and her new business partner. One rule. No crossing the line. Naturally, that rule does not stand a chance.
Their connection has been simmering for years, and once they’re thrown together through a bakery partnership, the proximity turns everything up. Late-night baking sessions, quiet moments of care, shared responsibilities, and feelings that refuse to stay buried all build into something that feels earned and grounded.
What Worked So Well: 🍰 Baking scenes that feel intimate without trying too hard 🏒 Hockey energy balanced with real-life responsibilities 👨👧 Single dad moments that add depth, not distraction 🔥 Longstanding tension that finally gets room to breathe 💌 Love letters woven in with purpose and emotion 🤍 A romance rooted in growth, timing, and choice

Corbin and Mabel’s story is sweet without being saccharine and sexy without losing sight of character growth. The romance isn’t rushed, and the stakes feel personal rather than manufactured. Add in a smart, lovable kid and a shared passion that keeps pulling them together, and you’ve got a story that’s easy to sink into.
Bonus points for the audiobook narration by Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton, who bring extra warmth, humor, and chemistry to every scene.
This is a strong, inviting start to Hockey Ever After and a great pick if you love sports romance with heart, humor, and just enough rule-breaking to keep things interesting.

In the package: 📦 single dad 📦 business partners 📦 brother's best friend 📦 love letters
Plot: Mabel has always dreamed about opening her own bakery so when the opportunity arises, she teams up with her brother's best friend, Corbin, setting one firm rule that they won’t mix business with pleasure. As they spend more time together testing recipes, opening up to each other and discovering old love letters, their chemistry becomes impossible to resist.
Thoughts: WHAT A BANGER BOOK TO START THE YEAR WITH. Easily my favourite one from Lauren Blakely. It tugged at my heartstrings and I had me grinning like a total idiot for the majority of the book. Corbin is THE book boyfriend. Why? Well I'm glad you asked because 1) he braids her hair, 2) he bakes and sends her love letters, 3) he's colourblind but memorizes the colours of plants in a store so he can give her the tour, 4) he's her biggest cheerleader. Did I convince you? Pretty sure I did with the first point. 🙂↕️ Their relationship was beyond heartwarming and the will they, won't they aspect had me on the edge of my seat for so long. The angst, flirting and tension was through the roof in this one.
Unfortunately there is a 3rd act breakup, but it doesn't last very long. I usually hate this trope but they were both dealing with so much that I can excuse it. While this is almost 500 pages, I read it in less than 24 hours. It's so insanely bingeable.
Thank you Lauren Blakely and Hambright PR for the ARC!
Rules were made to be broken (preferably on a kitchen counter 🫠)
5 ⭐️ | 3.75 🌶️
Lauren Blakely does it again and somehow still leaves me feral, emotional, and immediately desperate for the next book.
Just Breaking All the Rules is the irresistible first installment in her new Hockey Ever After series, and it’s everything I love about Lauren’s storytelling: sexy, heartfelt, emotionally rich, and impossibly addictive. I was lucky enough to receive both the e-ARC and e-ALC, and let me tell you: I devoured this story in less than a day because there was absolutely no way I was putting it down.
Mabel is a baker with big dreams and a bruised past, fighting to finally prove she’s more than her mistakes. When life knocks her down again, an unexpected inheritance pulls her back to her hometown and straight into the arms (and orbit) of Corbin Knight. Pro hockey player. Single dad. Her brother’s best friend. And the man she’s been quietly crushing on for seven years.
Corbin has his own dreams, his own losses, and the kind of emotional depth that sneaks up on you and wrecks you in the best way. Watching these two come together, slowly, tentatively, and with so much unresolved longing, was delicious torture. The chemistry? Off the charts. The tension? Exquisite. The way their emotional walls crumble as their connection deepens? Raw, intimate, and incredibly satisfying.
This is a story about second chances, about choosing yourself, about letting someone see you fully and deciding they’re worth the risk. The romance builds beautifully, the feelings run deep, and when the rules start to bend… yeah, you’ll feel it.
And we must talk about the audiobook for a second. Teddy. Motherfucking. Hamilton 🥵. As Corbin. That’s it. That’s the review. Panty-melting, voice-note perfection that adds an extra layer of intensity to an already phenomenal story. Thank you, Lauren. Truly.
Huge thanks to Lauren Blakely and her team for the ARC and ALC, and congratulations on the release (January 21st). If this book is any indication, Hockey Ever After is going to own my heart and my TBR.
Thank you @laurenblakelybooks for an early reading and listening copy of Just Breaking the Rules. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. 🤍

Blurb: A baker on her last chance partners up with her brother’s hockey-star best friend after a chance rescue—and despite a strict rule to keep things professional, their chemistry quickly proves impossible to ignore. As late-night baking sessions blur into desire, Mabel and single-dad Corbin must decide if breaking every rule is worth risking their dreams.
🛑Read on with caution; review may contain spoilers🛑
Just Breaking the Rules was a fun, swoony listen with plenty of heart and heat. Corbin is already walking green-flag territory as a devoted single dad, but I really appreciated how Lauren Blakely chose to humble his character by making him color-blind. Instead of it being a throwaway trait, it actually amplifies his strengths, especially in the way he learns Mabel’s favorite colors so he can connect with her more deeply. That level of attentiveness made his affection feel intentional and thoughtful, not performative.
Mabel, on the other hand, sees her life as chaotic, but I found her determination to pursue her dream genuinely admirable. Even when she doubts herself, her drive and resilience shine through, making her easy to root for. The chemistry between her and Corbin is undeniable, though there were moments where the pacing lulled for me and leaned more slow-burn than expected.
That said, the spice absolutely delivered, especially in audiobook form. The duet narration brought the characters to life in such an engaging way, and the narrators’ performances elevated both the emotional beats and the steamy moments. Overall, this was a charming, sexy romance with thoughtful character details that made it stand out, even if parts moved a bit slower for my taste.
There's nothing like a Lauren Blakely audiobook - and this one is done in duet with Teddy Hamilton & Samantha Brentmoor (two of my all-time favorites). Lauren's new series starts off with that push & pull love, the "we shouldn't, but we can't help ourselves" type of connection. Lauren's signature banter is there, and so is that emotional tug she brings to each of these swoony, sweet, and endearing characters. I ate this one up.
The plot is simple: Mabel's dream is to open up her own bakery, and when the opportunity comes up to partner with her brother's best friend (and hockey star) Corbin, she can't say no. Even if there is this strong attraction. Corbin & Mabel set firm ground rules: don't mix business with pleasure.
But there is so much more complexity to Mabel & Corbin. Corbin is a single dad and also color blind. I love the care Lauren gives to this & the real struggle depicted. The way he goes out of his way to learn colors to connect with Mabel is heart-melting. He is next-level book boyfriend.
Mabel's reputation is a hot mess & her journey to prove herself is something so relatable. I love her tenacity, and also the way she bonds with Corbin's daughter is so sweet.
Mabel & Corbin are electric. There's this slow burn between them that is built on flirting and angst. Once that "one time only" goes out the window, there's no holding them back & Lauren's spice is always top tier. To add to their connection, there's an underlying plot of love letters that just takes the swoon up a notch.
This is such a great start to the Hockey Ever After series with introductions to great supporting characters who I hope to see in future books. If you're looking for a mix of heartwarming, steamy and funny, in an incredible audio, this is perfect.
🏒 Hockey Player x Baker ❣️ Brother's Best Friend 🧁 Business Partners 🫶 Single Dad 💌 Love Letters ✌🏻 Dual POV in Duet Narration
This was a really cute/sweet read. Another fantastic romance from Lauren, always beautifuly written. The yearning in this story was page turning. I loved Corbin, he's so sweet, determined to help all the time. The dedication to his daughter, the love he has for Mabel. Made my heart melt. The fierce determination Mabel has for her future. Her growth, not letting past things get in her way, is admirable. Having the opportunity to listen to the audio for this, was the absolute best experience! It took this story to a new level and heightened what the characters were expressing. I highly recommend the audio to this read! An absolute must! This was the cozy romance I needed.
🧁Yearning 🍪 Brothers Best Friend 🍰 Single Dad 🧁 Love Letters 🍪 Workplace Romance - Bakery 🍰 Forced Proximity 🧁 Hockey Romance 🍪 Basting Brush 🌶️
Mabel our FMC, dreams of opening a bakery. After so long of of renting in pop up shops and ghost kitchens, she's determined to make her dreams come true. Failing miserably trying to get a loan she doesn't know she's going to do.
Corbin, FMC, hot, pro Hockey player, is at an event with his buddies before one of their games. An event where he sees Mabel unfortunately having a mishap with the cake she was making in the Webflix event. He ends up helping her more ways than one.
Corbin has always had strong feelings for Mabel, though he's always kept this to himself, being his friends little sister. When Theo, Mabels brother suggests he go into business with his sister, how could he resist, when it's part secretly been also his dream to own a bakery. This was also his late Mother's dream too before her passing.
Will they fail at being business partners? Or will love finally rise between sugar and flour. 💜
“I want to know all the colors of her. I want to feel what she sees. I want to experience her world.”
Just Breaking The Rules was an utterly charming read—brimming with heart, heat, and humor. I’d been eagerly waiting for both Corbin and Mabel to get their stories, and this book delivered everything I hoped for and more. These two complement each other beautifully, and their journey gave me all the feels and left my heart genuinely smiling.
Corbin and Mabel have always harbored a quiet interest in one another, but their attraction was off-limits. That tension only intensified once they went into the bakery business together. Being in such close quarters made it impossible to ignore the spark simmering between them, and watching that slow-burn chemistry finally ignite was incredibly satisfying. I loved seeing them juggle the chaos of running a business, managing their complicated lives, and figuring out what it meant to be together. Their relationship was sweet, spicy, and full of vibrant, emotional moments. Their banter was flirty, their chemistry electric, and they were simply perfect for each other.
The audiobook elevated the experience even further. Performed in duet by Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmoor, the narration infused the story with warmth, emotion, and personality. They made the characters feel alive and added an extra layer of depth that made the entire book shine.
As the first installment in the new Hockey Ever After series, Just Breaking the Rules was pure perfection. Corbin and Mabel’s dynamic was irresistible, and the inclusion of letters from the past added a touching, nostalgic contrast that enriched both love stories unfolding on the page. I’m already counting down the days until the next book in this addictive new series.
I'm going to start with this...Teddy Hamilton can narrate a calculus textbook and I'd be the most interested person in the world. Samantha Brentmoor is amazing too! I love her expressive inflections and the slight raspiness in her voice. Her warm tones do something to me too. This duet was beautifully narrated. Honestly, no two other voice actors/actresses could have done any better. It's like they were made to narrate Lauren Blakely's steamy and emotional hockey romance.
Let's get into the writing. Just Breaking the Rules is a hockey romance in which baking also takes precedence. Baking is a very competitive career so it makes perfect sense to couple the two together. I was hooked from the very first chapter. How could I not? Lauren thrust me head first into a sticky and uncomfortable situation featuring the FMC, Mabel, and her insensitive and idiotic ex-boyfriend Dax. She also introduced the MMC, Corbin, in the same situation making it all that more interesting. Oh and ladies, let me just say this... Corbin is now my #1 book boyfriend (sorry Rhysand). He is everything. I was swooning so hard and had goosebumps almost the entire time I listened to this book.
Needless to say, the plot was solid, the character development was complete and complex. I felt like I knew all of the important characters' back stories and found that each had their own emotional depth. While this is sports romance, I also encountered witty and sexy banter, steamy tension, and flirting that had me blushing. I especially loved the part where they found Harriett and Russ' love letters from the past. That was such a cute touch! I'm so glad that this was my first listen of the year 2026. It is totally worth it and I highly recommend it to all who love sports romances.
Thanks to Hambright for the gifted copy! I’ve only read a few Lauren Blakely books, but this is hands down my favorite. I’m THRILLED this is the start of a new series and I loved the little breadcrumbs dropped about side characters and their future love stories.
Read for: 🩷NHL star x struggling baker 💙Small town romance 🩷Hockey romance 💙Brother’s best friend 🩷Single dad 💙Business co-owners
There’s so much to love here, I could write a two page review. No one has time for that though, so here are the highlights:
- There’s really no insta-love or insta-lust. They’ve known each other for years (he’s her brother’s best friend!) and built a casual friendship first. Watching that slowly shift into something more is so rewarding! - The characters are well developed and feel REAL. Even their third-act choices felt true to who they are, even if I wanted to yell at them to get it together LOL. - It’s both an NHL hockey romance and a small-town romance, which is such a refreshing change of pace and a fun mix of sub-genres! The small town and the quirky townsfolk are absolutely charming. - The single dad of it all. He’s a fantastic father and co-parent, and his daughter is the most precocious 14-year-old I’ve read in a long time, in the best way.
This is one of the few hockey romances I’d genuinely call sweet. It’s much less lusty than most, and if this is the tone for the series, I cannot wait for what’s next!!
🎧: Also fantastic! It’s a duet, which only works for me when the voices truly complement each other, and Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmoor absolutely nail it. Both are audiobook vets for a reason — it’s impossible not to get swept up in their performances!
This was cute, and honestly a fun surprise for me. I haven’t read a ton of hockey romance, but this one was enjoyable and easy to get into. I especially loved all the baking innuendos sprinkled throughout the book, those had me laughing more than once and added a playful charm to the story.
This is one of those reviews that’s a little tricky, because the story itself was good… it was just very long. We’re talking 500+ pages, and for me, it started to lose steam around the 60% mark. The romance was still sweet, the characters were still solid, but there were a lot of filler scenes that made it feel repetitive and dragged out.
That said, the author did a great job with the characters, and I really liked the premise of the story. The foundation was strong, and there’s nothing wrong with the writing or the romance itself. It just went on longer than it needed to, and I found myself getting a little bored and ready to move on.
I say this all the time, but romances and rom-coms really shine in that 300–350 page range, maybe 400 max. Once they stretch past that, they can start to feel repetitive, even when the story is good. This is one of those cases where it’s not a bad book at all, it just felt too long for its own good.
I also immersed read this with the audiobook cause I was lucky enough to have the ALC as well and I have to talk about the narration because it was so good. Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton always do a phenomenal job, and this was no exception. They don’t just read the words, they act them, which makes such a huge difference. This was done in duet narration, which is my absolute favorite, and it really elevated the story for me.
Thank you so much to Lauren Blakely and her team for this ARC and ALC opportunity!
This story is the first in the new Hockey Ever After series, and it’s a great start. We meet Mabel, who is working hard to get her life together, and Corbin, her brother's best friend.
Baking is her life. She’s learned from her past, and now she’s ready to build something that lasts. Unfortunately, she forgets the most obvious rule in business - do not get involved with your business partner!! But then, Corbin isn’t just a business partner - He’s a hot-as-sin hockey player, single dad, and your brother’s best friend. Excellent reasons to keep things professional, but we all know that's not happening! :)
It’s like the universe is messing with her, and it was fun to see her balance the demands of her business, and the chemistry between her and the smokin’ hot guy who ticks off all the boxes: He’s attentive, supportive of her vision, is a great dad, a good friend, and looks fantastic covered in flour. *wink* Obviously, it’s difficult for them to keep platonic, workplace boundaries in place, and it was very entertaining to see the way their HEA journey unfolded.
It’s easy to lose yourself in these characters and the story line. While a slow burn story isn't particularly my favorite, the emotions and steady building of both their sweet, caring relationship and the sizzling chemistry between them kept the pages flipping on their own. As usual, this author provides not only a fantastic couple to enjoy, but all the secondary characters and banter we love in her creativity. I look forward to the next one in this series, and recommend this author's other works as well. I received an ARC (thank you) and my thoughts are my own.
Just breaking the rules is the first book of the new series Hockey Ever After.
We see some characters from the Love and Hockey series, and get to meet the next lot of brilliant characters.
We get Mable's happy ending after seeing bits of her throughout (most recently The Flirting Game) and she's paired up with the hot single dad Corbin, who just happens to be best friends with her brother.
Mable is Sunshine just trying to make her dream of owning her own bakery a reality. One that becomes closer to reality when a surprise real estate option lands into her possession. The only issue is money, enter Corbin a hockey player with a dream of owning his own bakery one day.
The chemistry between Mable and Corbin is great, a little slow burn with banter and a heavy dose of he's fallen hard and is pulling out all the stops to bring Mable into his way of thinking. What starts as a one time kiss, turns into a business partner with benefits situation with a sprinkling of fake dating.
Just breaking the rules checks off so many tropes it was hard to put down. It's a 5 star start to the series, and I didn't want to put it down.
What to expect 🏒 Series Starter 🏒 5 Star Read 🏒 Dual POV 🏒 Single Dad 🏒 Hockey Romance 🏒 Long Term Mutual Attraction 🏒 No Cheating 🏒 Banter 🏒 Business Partners With Benefits 🏒 Fake Dating (nothing fake about those o's) 🏒 Steamy Scenes 🏒 Interlinking Characters 🏒 Interconnected Standalone 🏒 Sunshine & "Hot Mess" FMC 🏒 Protective & Cinnamon Roll MMC 🏒 HEAs
I can't wait to see what's next in Lake and Remy's story.
Mixing business with pleasure was never so sweet. Just Breaking the Rules is another success by Lauren Blakely. The story of Corbon, hockey star and single parent and Mabel, the baker with a heart of gold, un my opinion, a win. While navigating a deep attraction and connection, Mabel and Corbin decide to become business partners in a new adventure and open up a bakery where both will work hard to make it a success. Mabel will run the every day business and Corbin will help manage and organise it as well as contribute with his baking skills and mother´s recipes. At least that´s the deal – concentrate on business and keep things strictly professional. If only it was that easy! Their deal will inevitably cross their own boundaries and allow for deep feelings to grow between them. Insecurities and fear of failing, of disappointing and of simply not being enough threaten their relationship, but true love cannot be detained. Corbin and his daughter earn the trust and the heart of the talented, but insecure baker. Corbin Knight brings justice to his name by becoming Mabel´s true knight when he helps her gain confidence in herself, her abilities and know-how. Lauren Blakely brings us a beautiful romance with lots of banter, romantic gestures and spicy scenes that will make you drool, blush and swoon. Reading the ARC was ana amazing experience only heightened by listening to the ALC. Hearing the story brings it alive as you can feel the character’s emotions on a whole new level. Thank you for the ARC and ALC.
Ice hockey and a cute, cozy, heartwarming romance is MY CUP OF TEA, and this book by Lauren Blakely WAS IT! Not having read ANYTHING from Lauren before, this was SUCH a good point to start with, as this has just made me want to read more!
We meet a small-town baker with big dreams and an EVEN BIGGER heart, Mabel, who unfortunately gets herself into a bit of a mess (quite literally) when none other than HER BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND looking all hot and shit AS HE DOES, helps get her back on her feet. Not without some forbidden happenings of course *smirk*. On their adventures of opening a bakery together, SO MUCH IS GOING ON AND I AM OBSESSED!
I swear, my heart WAS EXPLODING FOR HOW CUTE THIS FUCKING WAS! OH MY GOD! The dynamic between Corbin and Mabel… I COULD NOT EVEN! Their banter was ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS not to mention, Mabel definitely made me giggle A LOT. I really loved seeing her character progression with her redemption AND with how well everything turned out for her! SO PROUD! AND! I could not forget to mention how I mostly was melting into a puddle for Corbin! DREAMY GOLDEN RETRIEVER VIBES OVER HERE! The whole meaning with colours and now I just want to be someone’s “too much and not enough”.
Overall, I LOVED THIS BOOK with MY BEING! The characters that we were introduced to… I NEED THEIR BOOKS NOW! And I can’t complete this without mentioning Charlotte. I loved her THE MOST with her “I don’t need to help a man make him feel useful” attitude. YES, BITCH! GET IT QUEEN!!!
Tropes: •Single Dad •Brothers Best Friend •Professional Athlete •Close Proximity •Hockey Romance •Love Letters
Can I just say I think I might need to rethink me saying I don’t love the single dad trope…because I was obsessed with this book! It’s helps when they have as cool of a kid as Corbin does!! She is extra sassy and I look forward to reading her story in the future!!
This is my favorite book from Lauren Blakely to date (and I’ve read a lot of them)! I love a sports romance and who doesn’t love reading about delicious sweets? The entire time I was thinking I wish this bakery was real!
The connection and banter between Corbin & Mabel was so good and was there from their first interaction in the book. And the fact that he bakes and is a hot hockey player?!? Ohh be so for real! I ate it up. I love that his passion for baking came from a tragedy. I also loved the addition of the love letters, it just gave the story even more depth. I don’t want to give anything away - but Corbin being color blind and how he explained things? Literally touched my heart. It reminded me of Isaiah in Play Along by Liz Tomforde (which is one of my favorite books and MMC’s).
Our narrators - Samantha Brentmoor + Teddy Hamilton were fabulous per usual. Whenever I see these two together I know I am in for a treat. They did not disappoint- the way they make the characters come to life and the facts that it was Duet narration = perfection!
Thank you Hambright PR, Lauren Blakely & team for the ARC & ALC of this book. I absolutely loved it!
Audiobook is 100% the way to go. The narrator crushed it and brought both characters to life in a way that made it impossible to stop listening.
Our FMC Mabel is a full-on tornado in the best way. Exuberant, joyful, a little too much, a little too fast, very aware of the space she takes up and sometimes apologizing for it even when she shouldn’t. I adored her. She loves life loudly while still being deeply self-aware, and that balance felt so relatable.
And then there’s the MMC, Corbin. Older. Hockey player. Naturally takes up space. Forced into the spotlight because he’s just that good. (Yes please 😏). Add in the fact that
Corbin is her brother’s best friend, and possible future boss!?!? The tension was immaculate.
Mabel was it for him from the very beginning, but the moment he realized who she was years ago, he shoved himself into a box and stayed there. Watching that unravel was everything.
I also really loved how normal, real-life traits were handled with care. Corbin being colorblind is woven into the story so naturally. It’s not a “thing,” it’s just part of life and part of a relationship, which made it feel authentic and thoughtful.
And in true Lauren Blakely fashion, there’s one unique element used in a completely unexpected way that I won’t spoil, but trust me, it works.
⭐️ Easy five stars. I had so much fun with this one, and I’m genuinely thrilled that Just Breaking the Rules kicked off my 2026 reading. If this is the tone for the year, it’s going to be freaking fantastic.
When the advance copy of Just Breaking the Rules landed in my inbox, I genuinely did a little happy dance. Lauren Blakely is one of my absolute favourite authors and she did not disappoint with this one. I was honestly gutted when the Love & Hockey series ended, so finding out this was the start of a new hockey series with some familiar faces popping up, felt like coming home.
Corvin and Mabel very quickly stole my heart. Their chemistry felt effortless and natural and I loved how much they brought out the best in each other. Mabel’s determination to rebuild her life and business was so easy to root for and Corvin was exactly the steady, supportive presence she didn’t realise she needed. Watching their relationship grow alongside the bakery storyline made the romance feel grounded and earned, not rushed. The balance of swoony moments, humour and emotion was spot on and I loved how seamlessly the hockey world blended with Mabel’s baking dreams. Their happily ever after felt incredibly well deserved and left me smiling long after I finished. Lauren Blakely really knows how to deliver a feel-good romance with heart, heat and characters you want to keep reading about. I cannot wait for more from this series!!
