Goose Run #1

Danny Hall Gets a Lawyer

Rate this book
Danny Hall is terminally single. That’s not surprising, given that he lives in the tiny township of Goose Run, Virginia, and the only other gay guys he knows live with him in his grandma’s house and are like brothers to him. It probably also doesn’t help his dating prospects that he works at a gas station.

When a series of petty disputes with his awful neighbor escalates into a legal matter, Danny calls in a lawyer. But when Miller Clarke turns up on his doorstep, Danny finds himself chasing more than just legal advice.

Miller Clarke is used to dealing with minor claims and oddball cases. But tree law? That’s a new one. He can’t exactly be mad though, not when his new client Danny is super cute and just Miller’s type. But Miller only intends to stay in the area for long enough to gain some experience before establishing a real career in the city. He doesn’t have time for a relationship, no matter how tempted he is. Miller’s got big plans, and Danny Hall and Goose Run don’t fit in with them.

You know what they say. The course of tree—true love never did run smooth.

Welcome to Goose Run, a small town full of quirky characters, big personalities, and unexpected romances. Just don't ask about the goose.

Danny Hall Gets a Lawyer just barely squeaks out 3 stars from me, which is horribly disappointing as I love Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey. But this book was just a slog to get through, and at one point I thought I would actually not be able to finish. The second half was better than the first, but overall, this book was slow for me.

I think the book suffers from a few things that knock it down a peg. I don't love how young all the characters act. They are early 20s, but they act much younger, like high schoolers. The house dynamics are strange and didn't land for me. I know we are supposed to fall in love with the motley crew (who I'm sure will all get their own stories), but I didn't quite jive with them.

Also, the book starts off with way too many sex scenes for my taste without any feelings developing. The chemistry just wasn't there. I MUCH prefer my books to have sexual tension built up before the MCs get it on, and we didn't get that here. I felt meh about every sex scene.

This is a light book but it doesn't feel light. It isn't funny and the "tension" in the book is easy to telegraph (I guessed the whole plot early on). It reads like an okay small town romance, but there isn't enough meat to hook me. Of course, this is just for my tastes, but if this book was really funny or there was a bigger mystery, it might have worked better.

Just a very okay book for me. I'm sorry, Lisa and Sarah.

Danny Hall Gets a Lawyer is book one in the series, Goose Run, by Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey. This is my first book by both of these authors. This is a fluffy, steamy, low angst romance that could be perfect if you’re needing a break from something super emotional.

Danny Hall is I believe around twenty two years old. He and three of his best friends are living in his grandmother’s house while she is near-by in an assisted living facility. She considers his three roommates as her grandsons as well. She is a hoot by the way. I loved her.

Danny seems a bit lost. He has plans, goals. But not the financial security to achieve them. He’s working at a gas station in his tiny township of Goose Run, Virginia. His truck is very close to breathing it’s last breath, and he’s terminally single. Not by choice but there just isn’t anyone around to date.

Danny and his roommates have a very cranky neighbor, Harlan Whittaker. He is constantly on them about one thing or another. But then he takes it too far and Danny finds himself in need of a lawyer. That’s how he first meets Miller.

Miller Clarke is a lawyer for a small firm in the neighboring small town of Hopewell. Miller hasn’t been out of law school all that long so this is the perfect job for learning the ropes. But Miller has big dreams of working for a large firm in a big city like New York. Miller’s newest case is a dispute between neighbors in Goose Run.

The sparks are there from the beginning between Miller and Danny. Technically, Danny’s grandmother is Miller’s client so there are no rules keeping them from exploring those sparks. But that’s all it can be, having some fun, hooking up, because Miller knows he’s not staying. His heart isn’t listening though.

I enjoyed this so much. There was a crazy goose and plenty of quirky residents. I’m definitely intrigued with Danny’s roommates and what their stories are! Miller and Danny definitely steamed up the pages. My only complaint might be that I never really got that swoony, tummy twirling feeling from them. I did enjoy meeting this quirky bunch, though, and look forward to whatever is coming next in the series.

I smiled the whole way through this book! It just has such a wholesome vibe to it with a great found family and really strong friendships.

Danny is just a squishy little marshmallow and my heart hurt for him at times. I love how he takes care of his friends, but the way he was so infatuated with Miller was just adorable. I also loved the relationship he has with his nan.

Miller definitely went through a soul searching journey when he had to decide between the big city life he'd always dreamed of and small town life where everyone knows your name and your life story. He also has one really entertaining client who made me laugh with every new development...

The humour throughout the book was so good, but I think my personal favourite moment was comparing Wilder's body glitter to Edward Cullen 😂

There's also a quick cameo from the Road Trip boys, but even better..... Miller's intern is Marty from the Alpha Tau series and he's still hilarious and unique as ever.

Very keen to get the stories for the rest of these boys!!

*****
I received an ARC of this book from Lisa Henry, and this is my honest review

This started off strong but then just… fizzled out for me.

I initially really enjoyed the small town charm and this little group of friends who’re more like a family and I absolutely loved Marty’s cameo. Still my fav character from the Alpha Tau series!

BUT the romance between Danny and Miller just didn’t hook me. There really wasn’t any build up before they started hooking up and I need that to root for them, y’know?
So in the end, this had too much unsatisfying sex too quickly and too little plot to keep me interested.

This wasn’t bad per se, it just wasn’t right for me right now.

“And maybe I didn’t have a right to miss him, since he wasn’t mine or anything, but since when did logic count for shit when it came to feelings?”

giphyhss

It's a lighthearted fun introduction to another lovable cast of bros - like, seriously, they are the salt of the earth good bois - but, as a romance, my reaction was really lukewarm. I know I shouldn't take it so seriously and just roll with the feel-good vibes of casually getting it on. I’d be stupid not to make the most of it while we had the chance. 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ But I'd want some kind of emotional attachment to develop, rather than the obvious attraction that makes it easy to slip into one's bed or get frisky on the couch (yeah, that was so so apparent of what was to happen, my pikachu face was not all surprised) and then just feel like they've found their match with each other. 💓

“These guys weren’t just roommates; they were a little family.”

Not to say that the guys weren't great guys! The authors did a great job setting up each of the bonus grandsons' backgrounds, their personalities, their dynamics, their character profiles their future prospects - so much so, that I think they were really selling on the wholesomeness of found family rather than the romance. 🫂

And that's why multiple characters' series and I always have this long-running conflict where the authors focus so much on introducing characters to set up their storylines, that the main objective doesn't seem to be all that serious. Which, in this case, fine - that is what Miller and Danny were doing - ... that drew me to him like a magnet, and it seemed as though he was as into this as I was. A casual hook-up without obligations or formalities, because no feelings are involved when it's just physical, right?

I know it happens, I know. Feelings come after, when you realize that they're the first person you wanna talk to or confide in or the smile you seek out in a crowd. 🥰 And as much as that eventually did happen for the two, I was just hoping they could have connected on a more believable level rather than just getting hands-on dirty to make me feel that they are each other's 'the one'. 😕

I also get trying to make the tones funny and fun-loving, but I really could have done without Miller's extra crazy case concerning Missy Thurston-Wallace and Alexander Hamilton. 😒 Even crazier to have two worlds collide, and I'm almost afraid of how it could possibly play into fruition later on. iykyk

“It was fine. We were just fooling around.”

The smexy times were lighthearted and mediocre, there was no significant moment where I got the tingles for Danny and Miller's romance. 😐 I'm happy that Danny Hall Gets A Lawyer is as insanely sweet and charming as Miller - one who is considerate and kind and a rockstar in bed, someone who sees worth in Danny, when he never felt that he was special enough for someone to stick around for. 🥺 Not somewhere like Goose Run; which maybe it ties into Goose Run being just kind out there, that their relationship would be a run of the mill kind of relationship, but I just wanted to feel something! 😣

I also feel cheated that there was not much of the lawyer-ing that needed to be done, regarding Danny's case; but, it all's swell that ends well, so no one's the wiser.

Or maybe my general irksome stems from Marty, who 'was living his best life, and honestly? I was a little jealous. No, I really wasn't!! 😭 I know he's a fan favorite, but I enjoyed his book the least sadly, so his appearances may have slightly played a part in my generally unfavorable response to Goose Run. No matter how endearingly optimistic and cheer-io he can be. 🌝

Strangely enough, I really liked Callahan's character; there was a whole vibe to him that I was really vibing with. 😆

And no I did not dock points because of the faceless covers; as much as it bothers me, I respect that it is an artistic preference, so I'm just going to have to find a way to deal with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks so much to the authors for this ARC!

I gotta say, I had the best time reading this book, from start to finish, I had the best time, so much that I read it in my commute to and from work.

Danny is such an amazing character; he’s one of those guys who don’t ask for much and just do the best to make everyone happy, and if he can be happy himself, that’s a pretty good bonus.

Miller is really just waiting for his big break to make it to a big city and become a fancy lawyer, that’s what he wants, isn’t it? Until he discovers that maybe other things in a small town are just as good and rewarding.

If anybody needs an extra incentive to read this book, Marty from Alpha Tau is a side character, and he is as ridiculous and endearing as always.

10/10 would recommend, I can’t wait to read the next books in this series about Danny’s friends.

Hmmmm.... while the story was light and easy, WAY too much sex scenes for me, insofar as I thought the attraction for Danny and Miller was on the surface ONLY. I wish there was deeper connection between them, probably conversations about each other's life and dreams, things like that. But nope. Felt like it was all about the sex and I ended up skipping pages.

At least I LOVED the family feel of Danny and his friends, though. Wilder, Cash, Chase ... they were all made a family unit that I enjoyed reading. So yes, I will still be there for Wilder's story next. His daughter is adorable.

And it was hilarious knowing that Marty O'Brien (from The Amazing Alpha Tau Self-Improvement Project another series by Henry & Honey)) still baffled people; in this case, Miller (since Marty was his intern).

Too many characters, too many similar names, I keep confusing everyone.
Cash, Chase, Chad. Cal? Who’s that?
Bobby, Danny, Marty, Miller, Wilder.
A goose? It is all so random.
I keep going back and forth to try and figure out who is who and I just don’t care anymore.

I wanted something small-town light, and I got it here. An enjoyable cast of characters and a good set-up for future stories. My only complaint is that there were too many sex scenes and not enough building of the relationship otherwise. I know that if you go onto the rec groups the majority seem to want spice over story, but I wound up skimming those and think that took away from things here.

I am going to go back and read Marty's story, he was an adorable scene-stealer, and I'll grab the next one in the series too.

I tried to read it, I did, and it was not going badly but there is all this coyness about a certain intern and then we get to it and it's a character from another book. It's a character I loved in a book I loved but it's like the inside jokes about him were taking over the story about those other characters. Probably fanservice, but it was too much, too extra, too overdone and I quit.

I might try again to see if I can past a character I actually liked being obnoxiously all over the place in a story I did not expect him to be. But it was a major turn-off.

Six in the morning was too early for this shit.

The Goose Run series opens with the introduction of a motely crew living in Danny Hall's grandma's house! With similar vibes to the Accidental Love series by Saxon James, we get a diverse cast of characters that seem ready to find their HEA!

“I have good genes. I’m relying on those.”
I didn’t miss the way he looked me up and down. “Yeah, you do.”

The relationship built nicely and the heat level was more than satisfying! The overall plot arc - hence the reason Danny needed a lawyer in the first place - was a little sad and bittersweet in the end, but I really enjoyed the journey to get there!

And. OMG

No one told me Marty was in this book. Our favorite Alpha Tau guy added a great connectivity to the much-enjoyed series! Overall I can't wait to see what comes next for Goose Run - which house resident gets their turn next at a HEA?

Le sigh. 2.5 stars, rounded up.

I didn't want to write this review. I didn't want to write it because I expected to love this book, and then I didn't. I waited for a while so that my review wouldn't hurt the authors and potential sales when it was first published.

I didn't feel the romance - I'm told of insta-lust, but no real connection or chemistry between the MCs happened. I liked both MCs individually; I didn't buy the romance. They also read younger than their purported years, and the sex happened too soon and too frequently for my taste. They allegedly caught feelings, but I just didn't buy it. I am told, not shown, that they have the hots for each other, and then voila, it's luuuurve. Meh.

Marty saves this book from dropping to 2 stars, with his obliviousness and his amazing insight. I also quite like Danny's motley crew of roommates. Presumably they'll all get their own books in this series, but I'll wait until those are published.

Sorry, Lisa and Sarah. This just didn't work all that well for me.

I really liked the Schitt's Creek vibe that's played out in amongst the Goose Run townsfolk. The MCs were likeable plus one or two adorable supporting cast (not the goose). I know this is listed as a romance but to maintain my sanity, had to FF'd the sex scenes once they started to come on thick and fast! That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what's next in this new series. 3.5 stars

This was an incredibly sweet, low stakes small town romance! Danny works at a gas station, is perpetually broke and refuses to tidy his front yard; especially because his nightmare neighbour is always complaining about everything… why bother? But when the same neighbour cuts down a tree in Danny’s front yard, he finds himself armed with a hot lawyer who says he can probably get some money if he sues.

Miller sees his job as a small town lawyer as a stepping stone to a big, powerful position in New York. But when he’s called in to do pro bono work on a neighbourhood dispute over a tree, he’s not expecting to meet gorgeous Danny. The pair of them hit it off, but Miller knows it can’t be forever, not when he has his heart on the big city. But maybe the country life… and the people there… will capture his heart?

This was so sweet - the most angst in it is whether Miller is going to take a job and move to New York, leaving the small town behind (and the book has an HEA so… y’know 😹). I loved the cute vibes of the book, the easy chemistry between Miller and Danny and I adored Danny’s roommates, twins Chase and Cash, and bachelorette party stripper Wilder. It was also amazing seeing Marty from the Alpha Tau series in his internship at Miller’s law firm - bless him, he’s an expert on tree law, because of course he is!

Read for:
✨ Low angst, small town romance
✨ Class difference
✨ Found family
✨ The intricacies of tree law
✨ A terrifying pet goose
✨ Grandma is a badass
✨ Chasing your dreams… or your heart?

This was cute, and I loved the family Danny and the guys created. But…..

Danny and the guys are not doing well at adulting. The bathroom is just short of being a biohazard zone. Danny finally mows the yard/weeds noting it is a foot tall. The bookshelf in the living room is for parking empty beer cans.

The guys are young, early twenties, but they seem much younger. Danny is a slight mother hen looking out for everyone, and he wants to take good care of grandma’s house. His actions or in most cases lack of action comes across as lazy.

Yeah not for me. Read for a group challenge, otherwise probably one I wouldn't pick up. I got bored rather quickly. It was sad about the neighbor. The main couple lacked chemistry and felt like everything had already been decided at first meet. Not a series I'll continue.

If you loved the Alpha Tau Fraternity series (which I absolutely did!), then you are gonna LOVE this story 🧡💚 and you may even see a familiar face or two!

Danny lives in Goose Run, a tiny blip of a town. He has 3 roommates, and they live in his grandmother's old house. Danny works at a gas station and has plans to someday make it to community college and EMT school.

Miller is a lawyer working in a small town, Hopewell. He plans on cutting his teeth there, getting experience, and then his goal is to make it to a BIG city.

Circumstances occur, and now Danny has a pro bono lawyer. It's Miller.

It took a little while for me to get into the story, but once I was hooked, I was IN. These two have great chemistry and terrible timing.

Danny was a disaster but an absolute sweetheart. Danny's roommates were INTERESTING, and I can't wait for their books! Miller was a bit of a snob, bless his heart.

But I was ENTERTAINED by the whole story and loved the two MCs. Can't wait to see more of them in future books!

You can get DANNY HALL GETS A LAWYER direct from the author website now, or you can wait a few more days for it to show up on the zon.

I love this writer duo, and I am always here for their brand of sweet and silly.

4.5 stars. Fantastic start to a new series.

This was like reading a little ray of sunshine. Danny is such a genuine person who loves his Grandma and his found family. His life is simple and he has goals to improve himself to enter his chosen field of employment but money is always an issue but his is so optimistic about life. Miller is happy in his position at the small town law firm but for him it’s only a quick pit stop before heading to the law firms in the big city. When circumstances have these two wonderful men crossing paths the attraction is instant and it’s not long before a loose arrangement is agreed to and the heat level soon rises. There’s a slight bump along the way but Danny and Miller find their heartwarming HEA which gave me the sappiest of smiles.
If you love a Grandma who is an absolute hoot, “brothers” in the share the house that leave you giggling one moment and then wanting to wrap them in a big hug the next and a couple of fun and unexpected cameos from other book characters by these two talented authors then I cannot recommend this highly enough. There’s also a sneak peek at the next in the series and I can’t wait for it and the rest of the brothers to get their stories told.

DANNY HALL GETS A LAWYER is the first in Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey’s Goose Run series. When Danny Hall’s crotchety neighbor cuts down a gorgeous tree that’s been on his property for years, he decides he’s had enough of this escalating conflict and needs legal help. Cue Miller Clarke, a local attorney.

Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey have written a warm and lovely small-town romance full of kindness and love. Danny and Miller are ordinary guys, trying to find their best path forward, and it's clear to themselves and each other that they don't and can't exist in a vacuum. The question for them to answer is how they do want to live and what they want that community to look like. Love how Ms Henry and Ms Honey write their story, and I would love to be part of a community like Goose Run!

Such a Disappointment

I have looked forward to this book because I liked the authors’ Alpha Tau books. However, the plot was paper thin and filled in with graphic sex scenes (half a dozen in the first 50%). And these seemed to translate into falling in love when they were written as just sex. The worst part was how offensive Danny described a character with Alzheimer’s as “his cheese was falling off his cracker.” As someone who has seen his mother-in-law suffering from this horrible disease, making a joke out of it is reprehensible. I do not recommend.

Was bossy lawyer kink a thing? Because if it was, I had it. I’d approach his bench any time.
Wait, that was a judge.
Still, I’d examine his briefs if he asked me.

I’m becoming a big fan of this author duo! Their books are sweet, quick reads that are just plain fun to read. This newest release was no exception. If you read Road Trip, you’d have gotten a little glimpse of the town of Goose Run and the cute gas station worker, Danny Hall. It’s a quirky little town that most people only ever drive through, but for Danny Hall and his housemates, it’s home. For better or worse. Lately, it's been leaning more toward worse, though, thanks to their ornery neighbor. When the neighbor takes things too far, Danny finds himself in need of a lawyer. Enter Miller Clarke. For Miller, his time in Virginia is just a pit stop to gain experience before moving on to become a lawyer at a firm in a bigger city. But in the meantime, might as well enjoy a few casual hookups with the cute gas station attendant. Catching feelings with a guy from a small nowhere town is not in the plan. But what will Miller do when that’s exactly what happens?

Danny and Miller were so good together! On paper, they were complete opposites, but they worked so well. Their sexual chemistry was off the charts! This book was much spicier than we usually get from this author duo. But I’m not complaining! Their relationship was mainly physical at first, but we see them gradually starting to develop real feelings, and it was very sweet. But there’s the whole issue of Miller not planning on sticking around. He never led Danny on, but it was still a little sad having that hanging over them. I loved how it all worked out, though!

I also loved the found family between Danny and his friends, Wilder, Cash, and Chase. They were an eclectic bunch, but they had each other’s backs, and I was glad they all had each other. And it was so sweet seeing Miller become part of the group, too. All these guys had such big hearts. The bonus story about the couch actually made me a little misty-eyed. Once you finish this book, you definitely need to download and read that! I’m happy that this is the start of a series because I’m looking forward to spending more time with this group.

Oh! And if you’re an Alpha Tau fan, you’re in for a treat with a cameo from one of our favorite frat bros! Honestly, the book would have been worth reading for that cameo alone.

Danny works at a gas station in nowheresville Virginia, broke as hell but surrounded by good people who care about him (his 3 best friends/roommates, his grandmother, and his boss)... but then there's Harlan, the grumpy, elderly, busy-body neighbor, who randomly decides to cut down a big tree in Danny's yard. Danny's boss calls in a favor with a lawyer he knows, and that lawyer sends out his young associate Miller to meet with Danny and work on a lawsuit against Harlan. Miller is a baby lawyer, working in the small city of Hopewell, VA so he can learn how to practice law before hopefully moving to New York City. Danny and Miller are instantly attracted and begin hooking up. Miller doesn't want to get attached to anyone/anything while he's still in Virginia, and Danny doesn't really think he's much of a catch, so they agree to keep things casual. And we all know how that turns out in a romance book.

This book was a breeze to read. Danny is sweet and caring and Miller is doing his best to help people even when the clients are insane and the intern can't alphabetize for anything. The side characters are funny, with some zany antics. The story is filled with people who genuinely like and care about each other. However, I do think that Chase, Cash, Wilder, and Danny kind of sound like a nightmare to live with, but that absolutely tracks with my memory of what college-aged guys live like.

The lawyer/client thing: Technically, TECHNICALLY, Danny's grandma is the client. But....... listen, I’m not licensed in Virginia and I took professional responsibility more than a decade ago, but I’m pretty sure this would still get Miller in trouble with the bar association if someone complained. Did I let that stop me from enjoying the story? No, because the stakes were quite low here.

Cameos to look for if you've read other books by the authors:
-Marty fucking O’Brien (and his passion for tree law) from the Alpha Tau series
-Matt and Jacob from Road Trip

Altogether, a light, fun, entertaining story that definitely left me interested for the next book in te series.

Thanks so much to Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey for the ARC. Super happy to be advance reviewing for some of my favorite authors. This review is my own, unbiased opinion.

I've been a huge fan of Lisa Henry/Sarah Honey/JA Rock for years now. Every book they write individually and collectively is charming, at least a little bit (or a lot) funny, and deeply romantic, and this book is only a slight exception. I was absolutely delighted to find this book is but it largely kind of left me feeling a bit meh.

The story was overall entertaining, and I especially enjoyed the side characters, the wider story, and the humor, but the romance felt a little flat and rushed. I feel like the side characters were all really fleshed out and had tons of personality and charm, but the two main characters were, to me, rather uninspired, which is a real shame, as Danny especially was such a standout in Road Trip.

I wasn't much of a fan of the legal aspects of the book and feel like some simple Googling, or a slightly earlier ARC release, could have cleared up some of the sillier inaccuracies. I work in a legal field so probably your average reader wouldn't even notice.

Genuinely I feel like other than my little tiny pet peeve above that this book could have been better if it were longer. If the MMCs had more of a chance to grow on the page, and we just got a little bit more time to spend with them, their romance would have been delightful. I'd recommend this to other fans of the authors and those who enjoy a quick, wholesome, angst free romance with a lot of humor and found family. It's a perfect little summertime read and I did enjoy it, I just probably won't reread it the way I do other books by the authors.

This could have been half as long and then it would have been half as boring 🙄 So much boring exposition!

I'm tired of the whole quirky small town-first book in a series-gotta get all the other characters set up for their books thing.

Why does anyone think it's cute when 4 grown men cannot take care of their house? Yes, they're in their 20s, but weeding a yard and cleaning a bathroom do not take college degrees. Gross. Get it together!

Lisa Henry brought me to Goose Run and I want to stay! The small town, found family and idiots (affectionately of course) to lovers was so much fun! If you are looking for a low angst, spicy romance with humor (and a goose), you have to read this book. Also Marty from the Alpha Tau series makes an appearance which adds, well Marty in full glory, to the story! I received a free ARC from Lisa Henry in exchange for my honest review.
