While this book was written in 1923, it is 1000% relevant for every Christian today. The liberalism that Machen was so critical in his time is still alive and well today in the form of the Progressive Christianity. The Progressives and the Emergent Church reject key doctrines like the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, his atoning physical death and resurrection on the cross, and the sinful nature of man. They deem them too offensive, focusing on a loving Jesus who accepts everyone.
Machen's charge that liberals cannot claim to be intellectually honest, to reject core doctrines, and yet still call themselves Christians is still true. As an analogy, if you are critical of Mohammed and yet still call yourself a Muslim, that opens the same door that maybe you're not really a Muslim. Even the more moderate Muslims still accept Mohammed as the final prophet. So why should liberal and Progressive Christians in the in the 1920s and the 2020s get this pass?
I read this book at Liberty University's HIST530 American Christian Heritage class and I would recommend this to every confessing Christian.
