I stumbled upon this book on KU. I always want to read and support Black authors and stories, so I gave it a chance. Best decision I’ve made in a while.
I will never tire of being able to connect with characters and love them straight off the bat. Because that happened in The Rhythms of Us. I immediately loved Naya and Khloe. Yoe has created two amazing, resilient, strong and dimensional Black women. I technically started this in the morning, so I literally read it in less than a day. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down.
The way the author depicts tour life—the joys, the lows, high and bonding, you really feel like you’re there. Observing this found family of complicated individuals, with their own stories. Yes, Naya and Khloe were the MCs but Yoe somehow depicts each side character with depth and story without taking away from the main focus and plot. She leaves little hints(I clocked the Rae thing) and leaves you wanting more. All the way up until the end.
I need the second book now because I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING IN A MILLION YEARS?! Last time an author warned about the ending not having to be a HEA, the character died.. I believe that helped with some of the anticipation I felt throughout the story, but that’s not to take away from the beautiful, genius writing of Yoe! Wow. Wow. Wow. I will definitely reread this it is one of my new favorites. There’s so much more I want or can say, but I don’t want to give away spoilers or ramble.
