I didn't expect that I will like the story of this graphic novel because I found the first several pages a little bit childish for my taste. Nonetheless, the story became enjoyable to read once Kanata Hoshijima was introduced. I can't wait for the second volume because I already want to know who the culprit is among them. Thanks to VIZ Media LLC and Simon & Schuster for the reading copy provided.

EN I was in the mood to read a manga set in space, so this turned out to be a great choice.
The story follows a group of students who embark on a sort of space camp, but things don’t go as planned. Soon, they find themselves in a situation where they must learn to survive with each other’s help.
It was a very enjoyable read. The characters are interesting and quite distinct from one another, each with their own charm.
I was surprised to find out that this is only a five-volume series because, based on this first volume, it seems to have the potential for much more.
This first volume doesn't work very well. There is too much exposition and there is a reliance on puns and malapropisms that don't translate very well. Towards the end, the series shows some promise, so perhaps the next volume is better.
More like 2.5 stars, especially since the book couldn't be bothered to name most of the nine main characters until halfway through, much less assign them any personalities. But after a slow start, a core four jelled and a little bit of heroic action gave the last stretch some kick.
The artist is pretty obsessed with boobs and the Brokeback Pose, but the book manages to pass the Bechdel Test despite the fan service.
I have the complete five volume series from the library right now, so I'm planning to push on to get the full story.
I loved every single thing. The character development and the story itself was great. I can't even pick a favorite character since they're all so... lovable in their own quirky way! I laughed a lot and I've even held back some tears. Cannot wait to start vol. 2.
I’d heard about this series when I first started reading manga but didn’t think about it further until recently when I stumbled across YouTube clips from the anime and remembered its existence, haha, and it sounded really fun and interesting, so rather then watch the anime first I decided to try the manga, so here we are!
It’s a lot of fun with comedy and drama—with the teens’ situation of being stranded in space and inner and external conflicts in and between characters—balanced so that one never overtakes the other, which I find more stories tend to over lean into one or the other without striking that ever so delicate balance but this volume manages to do both perfectly.
Each of the characters are unique and different from each other in their own ways and while they might lean into personality tropes (ditzy, bossy, leader, etc.) more then some series do, the mangaka does so in a way that kind of acknowledges that but also says “heck, who cares, they’re still individuals and this is fun!” which in a reading (and writing) world that constantly says tropes and cliches are bad and should never be used I find very refreshing to see someone just throw that advice out the window and run with what works best for the story and not give a care. Because despite them coming off that way at a glance, these characters have depth and heart and I love that though Kanata and Aries are my favorites.
I really enjoyed this volume and with that bomb of a cliffhanger I’m SUPER curious to see where things go from here!
‼️Content‼️
Language: what the heck; holy crap; what the; crap; dammit; heck; gosh; geez; gah; suck; darn
Violence: a guy jumps and lands on a purse snatcher; kids get sucked into a sphere that dumps them out in space; a guy falls off a cliff and dies (implied more then shown); a girl is grabbed by a giant flying beast; a guy stabs and kills a beast with a lance (PG); a guy falls off a platform; in the past a character had to survive in the wild until they were rescued; it’s implied a man hits his son with a stick (action not shown)
Sexual: a guy says he has a “sexy deck of cards” (nothing’s shown); a guy is called hot; mild suggestive hints/comments
Other: a guy is accidentally arrested then released; kids are stranded in space; a ship’s communications were sabotaged
I love space books, but it's rare to see mangas that take place in space! I decided to pick it up for that very reason. I enjoyed the series a lot as it focuses not only on the journey through space, but also on the personal journeys of each of the characters!
Despite the fact I enjoyed this series, I can't say I would recommend it because of the content. If you prefer clean reads (like I personally do), I wouldn't suggest this series.
Tarina tempaisee kivasti mukaansa.
I loved, loved, loved it! I went into it keeping myself far away from any plot and character spoilers and ended up really enjoying it. Yes, it is shounen and has its set of characteristic cliches, but it also has solid mystery vibes, loud and funny humor, a varied cast of characters, and even some fourth-wall-breaking where it makes fun of its own tropes.
The first volume has definitely gotten me interested in the story and the well-fleshed-out characters. Looking forward to reading the next one!
More like 3.5 I mean the beginning was just terrible and I wish I could just ignore it but unfortunately it introduces our characters so I can’t. But damn that was bad. Now the second half. It was like reading to separate books. I mean what happened to our insufferable and ditsy characters. So let’s hope book two keeps up the latters momentum.
I want to get more into manga and sci-fi this year, and because this manga combines the 2 I decided to get it. It was a very good decision because I enjoyed it much more than I expected. It had a good combination of world-building, characters, and plot. I was surprised by how much the characters were deep, and I'm VERY intrigued to read the rest of the volumes!
I had hopes for Astra Lost in Space, based on the premise, about a class trip set in the future with space travel. When an accident occurs, the group of students has to figure out how to survive and get back home. It’s a classic setup with lots of promise for character development and exciting adventures.
Unfortunately, what I got was so based on stereotypes and caricatures that I had a hard time finishing it. This might be the kind of manga that’s better read in chapter installments instead of big chunks, or picked up when the reader wants some light entertainment without thinking too much.
I bought this series for my library, not only because it looked interesting, but also because it is well suited for this year's space-themed summer reading program. I'm also always interested in short manga series, and this one has only five volumes. Even though I don't typically read much shonen manga, I like sci-fi and really enjoyed this story. There's a good mix of action, danger, comedy, and heartfelt moments. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Eight students from Caird High School have come together to go on a routine camping trip. They are joined by the younger sister of one of the students. The trip is expected to take them to a planet where they will have a survival experience. Unfortuantely, while there, they are mysteriously sent 5,000 lightyears away and find themselves totally on their own. They will have to work hard and together in order not only survive, but to get home alive.
They are fortunate in that when they arrive at their new location, they find a spaceship, which they dub Astra. Once they get settled in, they are able to map out a path to not only get home, but also have a series of planets at which they can stop in order to hunt and gather up the food and water they need to survive. In this volume, they also visit the first of the planets on their map and start getting to know each other.
This was actually a pretty interesting kick off to the series. I am defintiely enjoying it and am looking forward to the restof the series.
Most of this was a little overly goofy and childish for my taste, but on the whole it was fun. I love the exploration concept, and the premise is a fun trope (a group of kids thrust into an unfamiliar situation and forced to survive on their own). I'm interested enough to check out the anime, because I'm much more of an anime person, and I think this would work well that way.
The beginning started off a bit childish and cringey, so I was really worried I wasn’t going to like it, but once we got into the real storyline it became very interesting!
Some of the characters are already likable, but I haven’t had enough time to get to know the others so I’m looking forward to more backstory on all of them.
There have already been a few plot twists that have really shocked me so I can’t wait to keep reading and see what other challenges they run into on their adventure. I’ll be starting volume 2 immediately!
Bom primeiro volume. Estou intrigada pra onde a história vai. A premissa é interessante.
I really wanted to like this, but the characters seemed really nice, the art is really well done, and it has an intriguing setup. Unfortunately, when I finished the volume I just didn't feel any desire to read it. I understand wanting to hook your audience, but I felt like there was so much exposition that could have been paced out a little bit more.
I love the characters already. The main character is a bubbly girl, which I love. She's so sweet! I love the story and the idea of the book series. The plot is really interesting. A bunch of inexperienced but smart teens stranded in space. Excellent. I rate this book 100/10!!
Kiehtova avausosa avaruushaaksirikkoisten nuorten koettelemuksista. Kivaksi leiriretkeksi tarkoitettu reissu muuttuu elonjäämiskamppailuksi, kun yhdeksän hengen porukka tempaistaan tuhansien valovuosien päähän kodistaan. Heidän on yhdistettävä voimansa, jotta he pystyvät keksimään paitsi keinon palata kotiin, myös ratkaista ruokaan ja veteen liittyvät ongelmat.
What starts out as a cringey, tropey manga about teens lost in space quickly turns into something with more depth and character development then you'd expect..

I picked up this manga because I was looking for a good sci-fi manga and this one was getting quite a bit of hype a few months ago when the English translation came out. I'm so glad I picked it up! It's a solid start to a new manga series. The first part of this volume was slow and a bit weird. It was mainly setup to introduce the characters.
The second half was a total shift in the narrative and I am all here for it! It's basically a YA Lost in Space meets Swiss Family Robinson with a bit of Jumanji and Up thrown in for some flavor. I love a good misfit crew story and it was fun watching the characters start to learn to work together and to depend on each other. Although, some of the characters are still a mystery. Plus, there's a bigger conspiracy behind our poor "shipwrecked" cast and how they exactly ended up on their abandoned ship far from where they started. I can't wait to see where this story goes!
