Melina Fernandez, sister of Don Diego, has led a sheltered protected life though not many realize it's because her sociopath brother has made her life hell with plans to offer her up as a virginal bride to solidify an important alliance.

Newly crowned Don Austin Miller wants revenge. Not the simple torture, maim, break bones, blood letting, killing sort of revenge. No, this level of revenge goes much deeper, directed at those who crossed the line in violating the most sacred of mafia held codes and beliefs.

First on his list, Melina Fernandez.

* * * * *

Warning: This contemporary dark erotic psychological thriller romance includes elements of violence, dub con, scenes depicting a sexual sadist, and mafia/mob lifestyle elements. It's not a warm fuzzy sort of fairy tale romance and should only be read by those who appreciate antihero dark romance thrillers. Consider yourself warned.

Holly Roberts: welcome to the dark side ... welcome to the family, we've been expecting you!!!!!

As a long time fan of this author I've seen the potential in her as she's not afraid to kill off important story characters and twist a story line with freaky shit and convoluted angst. It's taken me a little time to truly come to grips with my feelings and thoughts on this book. That isn't a bad thing as the story itself was so unexpected. I do feel that this is the first time the author's unleashed her potential in such a sinister devious warped twisted manner. For existing fans of this author be aware this is a change in her existing writing style but if you like truly love dark thriller stories, you're gonna love this one.

This is the 5th installment in the "Hotter Than Hell" series which can definitely be read as a stand alone. Yes, characters cough, cough, Moon cough, cough from past installments make appearances but only in so far as to support the existing story line and characters. End result, it's not required to have read previous installments to appreciate this one.

The main character Austin is definitely an antihero sadist - both sexually and personally. These sort of characters scare the piss out of me in real life but in my fictional world of reading. that they choose to live out in the violent dangerous lifestyle of the mafia, is icing on the cake. I tend gravitate to these bad boys loving the potential danger that comes with being a part of their lives.

Melina is the opposite sort of character. Though she's been born into the mafia lifestyle, she has little choices in her life. Dependent on the whims of her male family, her role as pawn is absolute. That doesn't mean she doesn't have her own inner strength and/or hopes and dreams though. I naturally become their #1 fan girl hoping that for them life is more than what they've come to know so far.

Putting the two characters together to create a believable romance (under the circumstances depicted in the story) was a balancing act. I appreciated how things evolved and the hidden aspects that weren't available to the reader until the end, however, those same factors drove me crazy as I screamed at my e reader one chapter only to do an about face screaming at the author for making things worse (or better) in the next chapter. Repeat. Repeat.

Seriously, this story can be read and/or appreciated on multi levels. On the surface the reader is provided with an angsty story that chronicles inner mafia lifestyles with a developing romance subplot. On a deeper level, readers can appreciate the story on a more complex level debating what is acceptable (even in the mafia world) and under what circumstances should moral decency and morality intervene, even though a fictional rendition. A perfect sort of read for a book club discussion as readers will have their own take on the pro/con aspects of this story. I know I would love to have a full blown discussion on it anyway.

The cast of secondary characters add to the world building to provide a 360 view. I appreciate when an author provides characters who have their own independent role and behaviors interacting with the central characters just as you would expect in real life situations. Moon does show up but doesn't overshadow the scenes he's in. That's appreciated as I always believe the central characters should shine. Andreas was a surprise as I really became vested in him and have high hopes he'll be featured in a future installment. Fingers crossed at least. Other characters do have their own degree of success/failures but naming them would be spoiler so you'll have to read the story to rate your own personal fav/hate characters.

Lastly, as this is a new release I'm very conscious not to provide any specific info that would spoil the reading experience for potential readers so forgive me for being vague on this part. The part I'm having problems with has to do with a tattoo/branding slant in the story. Intent is one thing and actual execution another. I'm conflicted over this whole scenario. In some distant future date I hope to discuss why I feel this way to resolve things but until then I'll be content to appreciate the awesome level of emotions I had over the whole thing.

I didn't overly stress that this story is a dark thriller as I feel anyone who appreciates dark themed stories doesn't need to be convinced or preached to. For others, this story includes fictional mafia violence and blood letting. Existing fans of this author need to understand the author has taken a departure in her current writing style going deeper and darker which may not be appreciated, but for this girl: Yippee Ki Yay and give me more!!!!!!!

While this was a good book, the whole time I was reading it, I felt like something was missing. I wanted a deeper look into Austin's sociopathy, more details on the abduction and on Malina's tattoo, and of course, a resolution of the brother issue. But even without all that, I enjoyed it as it was. Though I'm not sure if I'll pick up the rest of the series.

Dark but so enticing and kept you wanting MORE! Highly recommend this book and the entire Hotter than Hell Series!

*Contains Spoilers* Damn Holly S. Roberts, you are AMAZING!!! I just finished your book and I absolutely LOVED it! It was dark but yet SO enticing and kept me captivated the entire time. In the beginning, I couldn't stand Austin and wanted Melina to get a hold of something, anything to knock him out and escape the initial horror she was enduring but YOU actually made me end up liking Austin! I have to say my favorite part of the book was when Melina saw the ink that Austin created on her body for the first time. During their sessions when she opened up to him about her past, Austin was listening and inked her body with the happy memories that Melina shared with him....Feather, the zoo, the elephant, her Mom, the ribbon and the word MINE, which he added on his own. I also loved being able to read about Mak again because I have always liked her and I love how protective she is with the girls, especially with Melina in this book. You're SO talented, Holly!!! Thank you for yet another GREAT book to a FANTASTIC series and a story created by your brilliant mind!! I already can't wait for the next book in this extremely Hotter than Hell Series!!

Wow! This is book 5 in the Hotter Than Hell series. And this is one hot book. It's really dark and will leave you wondering what this world has become but it's so good. Austin was brought into the family when Victor got him out of juvenile. He brought him up to be his perfect killing machine and he took care of any problems in the company. Now Victor and Cindy are dead and he is going to get revenge. Everyone knows you don't mess with the innocent. This is where we meet Melina. She is going to be the answer and his revenge. Or is she? He has kidnapped her but it doesn't end up quite like he wants it to. The relationship between these two is one that you would never believe. Like I said, it's a dark feeling that they have to explore. We also meet up with Mak and Moon in this book which is neat. You have sex and violence and some really dark backgrounds in this book but you will enjoy it. You really need to read this first books in the series to understand everything but it's good by itself, too. Now I have to wait to read the next book in the series to find out what else is going to happen to our friends.

Wow! Dark and Twisted

Holly Roberts is a master storyteller. I love this series and this book goes dark, but takes it's time revealing the characters. We also get to see our old friends Moon, Madison, Alex and the others.

A mad, bad anti-hero set on revenge, using a girl who has already lost all hope.

This is a fairly dark 'romance', though it doesn't have any non-con or dub-con sexual situations. Both the hero and heroine have suffered abuse in the past, and whilst this is mentioned and discussed, it isn't visited in intense detail in the book.

This is a new-to-me author, but one who I have seen recommended by readers who seem to enjoy similar books to me. The blurb sounded very interesting and it was part of the kindle unlimited programme, so I took advantage of trying this book whilst I could.

This book definitely had its dark moments, the hero could be very unpleasant to both Melina and those who crossed him. However it wasn't quite as dark as I had expected, more of a romantic suspense in some ways than either a dark romance or a mafia/organised crime romance. Perhaps if I had read previous linked books I would have had different expectations of the book.

I found the blurb a little misleading, the book commences with Melina having already been kidnapped. The events that precede the kidnapping are thought about and discussed but are not experience 'first hand', so to speak. Austin is the kidnapper, cold, aloof and hell bent on revenge. Melina is not only his victim but the victim of life long violence and abuse. As Austin tattoos her against her will Melina share stories of her life, both good and bad. What starts as a means for Austin to avenge the murder of the only people he's ever cared for, turns into a battle not to feel. Melina knows that her brother won't want her if and when she is returned. What little value she did have will be lost and all she can hope for is a quick death.

The book is written in first person view, and we have chapters from both Melina and Austin's view points. This allowed me to get a good feel for both characters and to truly understand them. Austin was trying to hurt and punish Melina's brother because he had raped and tortured an innocent female that Austin cared about. Despite being angered by these events, in his head he somehow justified behaving in a very similar manner. I personally found it difficult to reconcile his actions against Melina with his 'righteous indignation' regarding his boss's wife. However this did help in the creation of a much darker anti-hero.

I could see how Austin became obsessed with Melina. She stripped herself bare both literally and metaphorically in front of this man, yet she retained her strength and dignity throughout. She reopened old wounds, gave truths never uttered before and shared her most precious and private memories. I found it difficult to see how Melina fell for Austin. He rarely treated her with kindness, barely interacted with her verbally and refused to believe her most dreadful truth. Stockholm syndrome aside, the author didn't quite convince me of where Melina's feelings had stemmed from.

The writing was good, the plot and pace kept me engaged and I was interested enough in the story to want to complete it. I'd started and discarded 3 other KU books before settling on this one! It is a good, solid read with plenty of darkness and some quite extreme S&M. Due to the content of the book, it is definitely an 18+ read and really for fans of BDSM and dark romances.

Austin Miller has gone through what a child should never have to. But that experience is part of the reason of what he is as an adult. Melina Maria Fernandez suffers revenge at someone else’s hand. Some may want to call it abuse and only you can decide which it is. It’s a story with some very strong emotions so don’t go into this story expecting smiles or hearts and flowers. It’s a dark tale that’s raw with no excuses.

Even knowing how dark the tale is, I found myself wanting to know what came before. But I didn’t feel, at any time, that I needed the previous five books in order to understand what was going on here. I did however become curious about Mak so I’ve already marked it for my TBR list. If you’re a “vanilla” type of person, what’s going on between Austin and Melina is on the other end of that spectrum so you need to understand that before opening this book.

I found this story to be confusing – just couldn’t figure it out. Where are Austin and our author taking the reader? In this case I didn’t mind because the author has done a good job at getting me to turn the page as well as wanting to know more about the Hotter Than Hell series. It takes almost the whole book to find that Austin created a masterpiece, which left me a little disappointed because I’ll never get the chance to see it. This book reminds me of a train. It starts off slow and picks up steam until it gets us to our destination. But in this case it felt like someone pulled the emergency break – we come to an abrupt halt. It’s sad to say that I can’t find if this is the end of a series or if it will continue. I’m left with a curiosity and that only time, and the author, will tell if book seven is in the works.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

>Book Review –Combust
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 6th in the Hotter than Hell series and ends in an HEA. This book is about Austin, the enforcer for a rival mob group. The book has a lot of Moon, Gomez and Mak even though Austin is a rival. Austin has a bit of a backstory, trying to explain why he loves to kill. He takes over as boss once his boss is killed. His first order of business is to kidnap the killer’s sister. His plan is to tattoo her and send her back as a living reminder that Austin is always in control. This is a very dark romance. Melina is abused mentally and held captive by Austin, who seems to have no feelings whatsoever towards her. Not until her tattoo is described does the reader realize the depth of Austin’s affections.
>Melina is a strong character. She is a survivor. Her captivity with Austin actually seems safer than her time with her brother. Austin, however, is a hard character to like. The scene where he “marks his territory” is particularly disturbing. He does try to learn about feelings, but he really doesn’t get very likable.
> The book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 5 stars. The story was hard to read, but the reactions of Austin were interesting. The story had a lot of action and psychological twists to it.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It's definitely on the darker side so be prepared for that but we do get redemption from Austin. Austin has kidnapped Melina to take revenge on her brother for killing his adopted parents. Austin doesn't give Melina much choice but there is no sexual abuse between them. This story starts off dark and stays that way for awhile. As Austin tattoos her back, she tells him different stories about her life. It causes of them to interact differently. Austin and Melina do get to know each other in an unconventional way but it works for them. Neither grew up with a good childhood. The sex is explicit and while on the darker side, it's all consensual between the two of them. It worked for me and the characters. I loved seeing the redemption that we get with Austin. He's seen himself as a monster and a sociopath since he was young. But we get to see a different side of him that Melina brings to life. I loved some of the twists in this story. This story had me pulled in from beginning to end. It kept me engaged the whole time and I really enjoyed it.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is getting a good, solid 4.5.

This was my first Holly Roberts book, but I'm pretty sure that it's not going to be my last one. I really enjoyed the story, and I want to learn more about the other characters that showed up in the book and how they fit into this book.

Austin's boss and his wife were killed. She was tortured in front of her husband before they were killed. Austin is going to do something about it. When he finds out who did it, he goes out to kidnap Melina.

Melina had nothing to do with the killing other than the fact that it was her brother. That didn't stop Austin from taking her. She is going to be the first part of his revenge. He's going to take Melina, mark her up, ruin her, and then send her back to her brother.

This book was intense. I mean, wow. I got seriously deep into the story and wasn't able to come back out of it, that's how intense it was. I needed to know more about what was happening. I couldn't ever really guess, because every time I thought I had a grip on it, something changed. I will be reading the previous books and watching for the next one to come out.

Omg Holly S. Roberts books are fantastic! This book has you turning pages faster then anything. Austin is now boss with the death of Victor and Cindy his wife. Austin was his enforcer and adopted son, now he's the boss. Austin is a sociopath and he want revenge for Victor and Cindy's death. Fernandez is in his crosshairs but Austin has a plan. Melina, Fernandez sister is the plan. Melina becomes Austin prisoner and he's blank canvas. The relationship between the two is unique in itself. Roberts brings in Moon and Gomez to help Austin and Mak and Celine to help Melina. This series is fantastic and every book makes you want more. Even with the cliffhangers you are not unhappy. Will, Austin find Fernandez before he gets to Melina? Will, Melina get her chance for payback in regards to get brother?

Combust

Kidnapping a woman for revenge. She is a blank canvas for him to tattoo on. Three weeks he kept her. Austin is a coldblooded killer. He has no remorse. When he took Melina to revenge the deaths of his boss and wife, he didn't know what he's letting himself in for. He took her to make her brother pay for the deaths of Victor and Cindy. What he didn't plan for, was falling in love
This book met my expectations, above and beyond. Miss Holly you really are awesome. The story flows from beginning to end.
I so love that Moon and Gomez is back in this book. He's as quirky as ever. The man has a sense of humor, although he rarely smiles
This is a spectacular end to an amazing series, or is it the end? Who doesn't love a crime boss who kills for the right reasons? And who doesn't adore a man who protects the woman he loves with his life?

Beware The Darkness

Be in a good headspace before you read this.... The darkness envelopes the reader. I've seen some horrific things in my real life work, and devoured VC Andrews novels as a pre-teen... Yet there were several points during this book where I wasn't sure I'd finish reading this story. I even wondered if I needed to watch a Disney movie after this book. I did finish the story, mostly because I'm heavily invested in Moon's Universe, and I like the author's writing style. I'm glad I made it through, but the HEA wasn't light enough to brighten the heaviness of this story. So, to the next reader, heads up... This story is at least 75-85% darkness. If you're sensitive or squeamish, don't even try. You can probably read the rest of the Hotter Than Hell series without losing too much by skipping over this one.

I love this series. How Holly describes and the words she uses, you are right there. Her background lends to the story.
This book is hotter than hell just like the name of the series.
You have to have an open mind when reading the book. What is going on to both characters lend to the story. Austin is out for revenge & she is the key to that. She is also key to his own kind of prison. He doesn't know it & she doesn't know he is the key to her own prison.
This type of story could have been told in so many ways & I have read other books where it had. I love how Holly told the same old story of boy & girl don't know what they truly want & the mess it up the whole time.

This is Combust, book 5 of The Hotter Than Hell series written by Holly S Roberts. Wow! What a deep, dark and twisted rabbit hole we are being pulled down with this one. Austin is a really damaged man and he decides to get revenge on his enemy in a vile way. The fact that Holly can humanize this man and make you care about him is a true testament to her talent! What happens when you take two equally damaged people and confine them together? Watch for sparks because the flames are hot! Another sexy steamy book!

Reading a book with my name in it makes me feel bad ass! Reading a book with a character who has my name and has great sex? Makes me feel rather jealous! Roberts impresses me AGAIN with Austin and Melina. This hotter than hell book is action packed, bloody and Sexy! If you're looking for a dark read with a sociopathic male lead who's heart turns from ice to a burning flame, read this book! The only thing I'm going to complain about is that I'll have to wait for the sequel! Austin and Melina are going to make a DEADLY team.

What an amazing book. One minute you want to kill Austin and the next you feel sorry for him. Austin is trying to avenge the death of his mentor and the only mother figure he had. So he kidnaps the man responsible for their deaths sister Melina. Melina each day wishes for death because she knows if she is sent back to her brother he will make her death more painful than Austin would. To know what happens to Melina and Austin I suggest you read this book. Holly has done it again and wrote another great book in this series.

This series is going to make me combust

I thought the first books were amazing but I was wrong. They were the palette cleanser preparing me for this book. While I didn't have my unhealthy crush on Austin the way I did for a certain other character or two, I was still drawn to him. His past called to me. I knew there was more to him, especially, after knowing what he tattooed on on Meliana.

The stories told broke my heart. I loved seeing the gang again. I just plain love this series. I'm worried the next book might break me as the snark peek has me worried.

Awesome

Oh my god!!! This was so worth the wait. It was a roller coaster from beginning to end. The author did such a good job of humanizing someone who could have been a total monster. Melina at first appears weak but she turned out to be super strong and I love that in my heroines. Austin met his match. I would recommend this book to anyone who like books with action. So darn good.

I hope I don’t get caught up.

The reason I don’t want to get caught up on this author’s books as I cannot wait to read the next one. It will kill me to wait. Love Melina. How can you not? This is a strange but great story. So much excitement in each and every chapter. I still love the fact of the characters from other books showing up. You won’t be able to put this book down, I know I couldn’t. Holly Roberts is such a talented writer.

Really enjoyed this book. There were quite a few repeating thoughts of characters that got annoying during the first 1/2 of the book, but I loved both H & h. I’ve only read this book in the series and it holds well as a stand-alone, but it’s made me want to read the rest of the books because I want a chance at catching a glimpse of these characters again. When a book makes me want to read the rest of the series, it’s a pretty great book.

Wow, that had some dark elements I was not expecting! This was a kidnapping, and almost a case study in the changing dynamics between our two main characters. As they connect, disconnect, lunge, and parry, we get to see more of who they are, what makes them tick. What becomes more evident as time passes is how well they link together, as each other’s ying and yang. While we don’t get resolution of the larger storyline, we do get, what is perfect for our couple, their HEA <3

This was a very dark story about the actions and feelings of adults who survive a horrible abusive childhood. It is something that I tend to avoid reading about but wanted to read these books in order. Can’t say I loved it but just warning you that it is a difficult read.

Making a killer likeable isn't easy but Miss Roberts manages it. Keeping victims real and believable even more difficult ! Their world is violent and not for the weak , only the strongest survive . The journey is well worth it. Enjoyed seeing past characters interacting with the new too.

WOW, this book is anti H at is finest. Dark and not your typical HEA, this books is based on revenge. Kidnapped and held against her will Melina is just a pawn in the war between Austin and her brother. Both are evil and uncaring. This book was inquiring to me and quickly a hard to put down read. So conflicted. It's an abuse, kidnapping that turns into love.
I like how Austin was "humanized" by Melina, but their love story is not conventional or ok. Somehow the author wrote it in a way that made me not hate Austin, which is amazing. He was horrible to Melina. But somehow I still wanted them together.
