Solar Flare Outage, book 1 in the Braxton Stone series, details a vacation to Vegas by Braxton and his German Sheppard Lincoln which goes entirely awry when a catastrophic solar flare, followed by a CME destroy all electrical infrastructure across the western US. He meets a waitress, Devon, and agrees to help her get home to her 2 year old daughter Lucy. He suddenly finds himself trying to wrangle a group of 4 waitresses, some of whom are reticent to adapt and cooperate to get home. Law enforcement is nearly entirely absent for most of the book, then becomes a force causing more harm than good. The writing is clear and vivid, with action sequences starting within 5 minutes of the power going out, and doesn't stop once it starts. The author masterfully paints a very vivid mental image! This is a very promising start to a new series and I'm looking forward to more 5/5 stars! Highly recommended for fans of apocalyptic thrillers!
I had some mixed feelings on the book. The NASA people are surprised by the large flare/CME, but state it would reach earth in a few hours. The fastest one would be at least 18 hours, but more likely a day or two so plenty of time to warn people. I kind of liked Braxton and I am always a sucker for a dog. I appreciate that he wanted to help the Devon and her friends, but at some point you do have to have some regard for your own survival. I get that it would be a risk to get his truck out on the road, but choosing to walk all the way to Devon's seems like an equally bad plan and with less mobility and ability to carry supplies. I'm a bit on the fence in continuing, but am a bit interested on how Lincoln the dog fares.
There's a massive solar flare that hits the Earth. The book has people dealing it from NASA and people who are just caught in what happens. There's a major problem at Las Vegas casinos, Las Vegas itself with the solar flare knocking out transportation, people trying to deal with what is going on and others trying to take advantage of what is happening and a lot of gun fire.
It seems pretty realistic, the characters are done pretty well and the escalation of people's reactions to what is going on is also logical. Pretty well done book.
Solar Flare Outage is a gripping post-apocalyptic thriller that wastes no time putting the reader into a world where modern life has suddenly collapsed. The solar storm creates a believable sense of chaos, while Braxton and Devon’s struggle to survive gives the story a strong emotional core. I especially enjoyed the combination of survival, danger, and human resilience as they navigate a dark and unpredictable Las Vegas. Fast-paced and tense, this is an exciting read for anyone who enjoys EMP and post-apocalyptic thrillers.
This is such an interesting subject and I enjoyed the first part of the series. I'm liking this storyline so far. It really makes you wonder what could happen if a major solar flare caused everything electric to die. Now I want to learn how to harden my devices!
The author did a great job painting the picture of this disaster scenario. Looking forward to the next installment.
I have read several EMP disaster books so decided to try this one, especially when I saw the dog on the cover. I love a good dog character in a book and I thoroughly enjoyed Lincoln in this book. I do disagree with the authors statement German shepherds are not known for tracking. The book deals only with the first two days of the solar flare disaster and the book is short so I guess the author plans on writing many more books in the series.
I liked the premise, the start, the backgrounds on the characters, how events unfurled. Harrowing tale of survival in the first 1-2 days of the solar flare, lawlessness has begun.
This was a fine book. There's not a lot more one can write about EMPs or CMEs than has been written. It is left for the author to give us good characters and different situations. Mr. Hawke has done a good job with this story.
