If you want to read a book with tiny dragons, family drama and emotional trauma, then this is the book for you.
By chapter 2, I was hooked! There was so much that already happened in such little time. The descriptions and build ups to the many events that happen, flow together so easily and well. You can picture everything that happens as and when it happens.
I listened to the audiobook along with reading the physical copy of the book, and the narrator that Damien chose was a perfect fit. Not only did the intense moments hit their mark, but I didn't expect to feel so emotional with them. It was an emotional rollercoaster. I have developed deep attachments to all of the characters and was rooting for some more than others. (If you know, you know).
10/10 floppiness for the physical copy of the book. This is one of the few occasions where this level of floppiness is appreciated. The quality of the book is great. The spine didn't crack when reading, which is normally the inevitable.
If you decide to read this book, and I think you should. PLEASE have an emotional support teddy, blanket or pet. This is your warning!
Amazing book, I would recommend to anyone that enjoys fantasy. As much as I have been mad at Damien, and how I think he is a mean mean man for the events in this book, I'm still very excited to get my hands on the next of the series.
I usually don't read books that are this long, however after hearing the premise, I was intrigued. I decided to give it to go and am so glad that I did. The world building in this book was the best I've seen yet. Some really unique ideas revolve around the world they live in, the gods, as well as the different communities and creatures that inhabit it. I found there were a few characters that I loved, a few grew on me, and a couple I was fine with, but looking forward to seeing their progression in future stories. Addan, Milo and Ember were my personal favourites. I didn't mind Cal and Uehan as well. They were interesting additions, and Liana was a character that slowly grew on me as the book progressed. I'm interested to see where the story goes from here, and look forward to reading more stories set in this world! Keep up the great work Damien!
If you want a book that will transport you into a world you can see and imagine, whilst never truly grasping the fullness of the world you are in, this is the book for you. The characters are so well constructed that you feel like you are right there with them, standing at their side unseen. I haven't thoroughly read it yet, but I couldn't wait to review it. I haven't had a book enthral me so much in years, I'm completely hooked. The author truly immerses himself in the book, constructing each aspect meticulously; each part and action has a reason behind it, and the foreshadowing is subtle, not giving away the plot. The last time I read a book that left me this enamoured, I can't remember. The thirst for more is real. The first book is like a spring breeze, introducing a multitude of unique and spectacular ideas and thought-provoking moments. I really, really need book two sooner rather than later, already predicting a summer storm on its way. If you aren't prepared to be stomping, wishing book two, three, and more were already out, be warned. I can honestly say it is insane how crazy and mad it skillfully drove me to it, I hasten to add. Ask the wife, it was like a toddler having a tantrum, begging for more. I don't believe I can express just how good this book is.
I loved this book. If you love a good fantasy book this is the book for you. Its a new concept and story, most fantasy books have the same plot and stories and only different names.
This book introduces us to the world of Rybban. We explore a little of Moranza and go on a journey to Dawan. Through out this journey we meet al kinds of animals, creatures , monsters and people. And we meet de gods (the architects).I love that we see multiple p.o.v from the different characters through there journey. And i love that this books has a whole new concept en story line for gods. The gods in this book are not greek gods like most fantasy books have.
And the dragons! Who doesnt like tiny dragons. And in the end of the book when they help Liana, they get to be one big and powerful dragon to defeat the bad god.
And the end? What was that? What is to come? Is it really over and the bad god defeated? I cant wait for the next book in this series. I would like the next book like right now!
So if you like fantasy? Dragons? Magic en gods? And dont want to keep reading the same old story lines. The i recommend this book!
Cant wait for more books by this author!

This book was every bit as good as I hoped and heard it was. You follow a host of characters across a world torn by the past, a past that may just be it's own future.
Your main cast follows Liana, her family and her friend Addan. All who are trying to find their own place in the world and all that fall into a fate none of them expected.
Liana gets a god trapped in her mind, this sets forth events that spiral and unfold in a fast paced but detailed way. The story didn't wrap up at all how I expected and the ending certainly drives home the desire to pick up book 2 once it has released. The tiny dragons are an absolute fun detail in this world.
I loved the story and the characters and I'm excited to continue in this world that I'm sure will only expand as the series continues.
this book is phenomenal!!! this is my 1st fantasy book and I listened to it via audio but it was the best book ive listened too,
I loved everything about it! the story, the characters, the world building. this book gad me going through every emotion possible and at times I was so furious but thats what made it so good, y are completely enthralled in the story and the characters.
this book is amazing and if you haven't read it then why not?
In the mystical realm of Rybban, torn apart by divine conflicts into Moranza and Dawan, a fragile hope for unity takes center stage. The queen of Moranza courageously attempts to heal old wounds, building a bridge and extending an olive branch to Dawan. But betrayal strikes like lightning—her life is taken before the very eyes of her people.
Unbeknownst to her daughter, Liana, who harbors skepticism about the Gods, the queen’s demise sets the stage for a volatile future. Lost in her own journey to aid her friend Addan, Liana finds herself in the heart of Dawan, where a dying man's plea pulls her into a greater destiny. In an astonishing twist, she saves a cursed God, binding him to her against her will. As rumors of her abduction spark fury in Moranza, her brother Cal edges closer to declaring war, driven by revenge and a need to protect their kingdom.
Amid the shadow of impending chaos, the tale unfolds through the gripping perspectives of Cal, Addan, and Liana, each consumed by quests for vengeance, redemption, and survival. Dragons, magic, court intrigues, and divine clashes come alive in this thrilling saga. The heroine’s transformation—from rebellious defiance to embracing the consequences of her choices—is a powerful ode to resilience. With no spice or foul language, this clean fantasy is a treasure for readers of all ages who crave epic battles, stirring sacrifices, and the beauty of overcoming. A must-read that will leave you awestruck!
✦ “May the Architects guide you and watch over you, always.” ✦ 🌙 Orchestra of the Gods — Damien Buckley ⭐⭐⭐⭐✧ (4.5 stars)
✧・゚: * SPOILER FREE REVIEW * :・゚✧
As a lover of fantasy novels, this was absolutely a book right up my alley. Tiny dragons (the size of pigeons), a well structured and very unique magic system, plus a matriarchal society… sign me the heck up!
Damien, where do I even start? The world building was fantastic. I had no trouble following along, even though I hadn’t read anything quite like this before, and I found myself completely immersed and hooked from page one. Even with the 500+ page count, which might feel daunting to some, I never wanted to put it down. I just kept wanting to see where the story would go and couldn’t put it down at times.
I loved the lore of the Architects! How they fit into the world, the purpose behind their roles, and how every detail felt intentional. The twists, turns, and tension-building were beautifully written, keeping me on the edge of my seat (well, bed lol) the entire time. Everything about this book felt deliberate and timed flawlessly.
As for the dialogue, this is my only teeny-tiny critique hence why I gave my rating a 4.5: There were a few moments where the pacing slowed down a little with some dialogue that felt just a tad longer than needed making a few conversations feel slightly drawn out. However, I can see how these moments helped further develop the world and characters. But honestly, I laughed out loud many times at things the characters came out with, whether intentionally funny or not.
On to the characters: The animal companion in this book was utterly adorable, and its name was perfectly suited. So many characters captured my attention ,most I liked, some I truly adored, and others I wish we’d had the chance to get to know more. I didn’t always feel a strong connection to everyone, but even so, the world still felt alive through them all. I have a feeling book two will explore them further, which I’m really excited for.
Overall, Orchestra of the Gods is immersive, fun, unique, and full of surprises. The world, the magic, the tiny dragons, It all comes together in such a satisfying way. This first installment sets up the series beautifully, revealing just enough to leave me eager to wander further into its world and see where the story goes next and is a fantastic read for any fantasy lover who just cannot get enough.
A matriarchal society, a quarrel among gods, and a brewing war
On my YouTube channel, I exclusively review self-published and indie fantasy books. I ended up giving this book an 8/10 overall, and it was a great foundation for this epic fantasy series. You can check out the full review here: https://youtu.be/KDi8e1pWHEI
Here is a brief overview of my breakdown:
Immersion (worldbuilding): 9/10 - This world was incredibly well thought out. I loved the contrast of cultures between Moranza and Dawan. I enjoyed the lore of the Architects and their role in society. The moons and the physics of their astronomy. Everything had a purpose and it made the experience feel real.
Names (characters): 7/10 - I liked the characters, but I feel like they needed more depth for me to love them. A little too much exposition, especially in the dialogue toward the end. I also felt like the motivations of Cal and Addan were redundant. But I did like the dynamic between Eraidor and Serratanian. I just wanted a little more personalities from these people to match the epicness of the worldbuilding.
Da Magic (& creatures): 9/10 - Probably the highlight of this book. The magic system was very intricate and interesting. The Origem as the source of magic and the cost/consequences of obtaining magical abilities was great. I also loved the unique take on dragons, making them more of a swarm of dangerous birds than a massive beast.
Infrastructure (plot, pacing, prose, etc.): 7/10 - There needed to be some fluff cut from the overall sentence and paragraph structure. I wouldn't get rid of any of the scenes, I would just make them a little tighter to help with the overall pacing. But the plot itself was great - rising conflict and stakes that had a very natural progression.
Enjoyment: 8/10 - Despite some of its quirks, I enjoyed this book! I'm a sucker for epic fantasy, so I look forward to seeing where the rest of this series goes.
If you like epic fantasy with unique magic and creatures, with deep worldbuilding, then I would highly recommend this one.
I received an advanced reader copy through BookSirens and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Length can be a bit of a contentious issue when it comes to fantasy novels. They tend to be on the long end of the spectrum, and this can be for many valid reasons, especially if it’s the first of a series, but sometimes a book is long when it doesn’t need to be. This is the core issue I had with Orchestra of the Gods by Damien Buckley. At a little over 500 pages, it isn't quite as long as some first novels in the fantasy genre, but the length here felt unnecessary. A lot of the length comes from dialogue that is longer than it needs to be. Most of the characters meander, using phrases like ‘how should I say’ or ‘for want of a better word’ almost religiously, and the vast majority of this dialogue would be improved by the removal of these phrases. I’m not saying that this sort of thing can’t be done, but when a lot of the characters are doing it, it becomes tiresome and unnecessary. That being said, the story itself is unique and interesting. Orchestra of the Gods has a unique take on dragons that I think really breathes some life into the oversaturated mythical beast. The twists and turns do build well and Buckley has a good grasp of tension building. Orchestra of the Gods doesn’t break any new ground but is a passable first entry into yet another fantasy series. For anyone who just can’t get enough of fantasy, this one will be for you.
I’ve sat on this book for way too long, but glad I waited until the audiobook was released so I could do the fully immersive experience of listening whilst reading along. The pace is moderate, like in most fantasy novels this is down to the world building, especially when you are being introduced to a new world & characters.
The world building is superb, you don’t get bombarded from the start with loads of details it is drip-fed to you throughout the book, building this new world layer by layer. I really loved the contrasting cultures & environments between Moranza & Dawan, giving a subtle believability to the world.
Liana (MFC) character development sends her through a journey of self-discovery & into a strong lead character. All the supporting characters like Addan, Cal, Milo & the twins have their own personalities making the storyline richer, but I’m hoping that book 2 gives everyone more backstory & depth, I will admit Ember was a favourite 😊
The magical system was interesting, but most importantly the tiny dragons where the star of the show, having them small instead of the usual huge size was fabulous & gives a unique interpretation on what they are capable of.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read, if you like epic fantasy full of magic, mystical creatures, quests & fight scenes, or looking to dip your toe into this genre, then you need to grab a copy of this book or audio.
This is a masterclass in writing accessible epic fantasy.
I was hooked from the very first line. The writing pulls you forward in a way that makes you want to keep reading and questioning everything, while still feeling grounded and intentional. The descriptive scenery is vivid and immersive, and the world building is seamlessly woven into the story. It is detailed without ever becoming overwhelming. You learn things exactly when they matter, through the characters, and it never once feels like info dumping.
One of the strongest elements of this book is the attention to detail. Names, places, language, and symbolism all feel carefully chosen. There is real depth here for readers who enjoy digging into lore and meaning, and I found myself happily going down rabbit holes while still being fully invested in the story itself. The book rewards curiosity without making it a requirement, which is something I really value in fantasy.
I also really appreciated how the story explores religion, human rights, morality, and perception. Watching the characters struggle with belief, question what is right or wrong, and navigate the very thin line between good and evil added so much depth to the narrative. Nothing felt simple or black and white, and those moral tensions made the characters and their choices feel more human and real.
The pacing is excellent, especially for a first book in a series. I often struggle with fantasy openers that focus heavily on setup, but this story is gripping, intriguing, and thought provoking from beginning to end. Quiet moments matter just as much as the louder ones, and their significance becomes clearer as the story unfolds.
The writing is emotional without being heavy handed, poetic without sacrificing clarity, and full of lines that stay with you. The characters feel real, the world feels lived in, and the balance between realism and whimsy is handled beautifully.
This book gave me everything I look for in fantasy. Depth, detail, strong pacing, emotional weight, and a world rich enough to get lost in. The fact that this is only the first book makes me incredibly excited to see where the series goes next.
I loved this book, and the challenge I am facing now is not turning this review into war and peace.
This book is a perfect blend of familiar fantasy that makes you feel like coming home, and an exciting uniqueness that feels totally brand new. Just when you thought you knew what was coming, it would go in a totally different direction and throw you right into the 'okay... one more chapter' trap. This book nails plot twists without becoming confusing and cliché.
The only issue I have seen raised so far is some pacing issues with dialogue, however if you are like me and love nothing more than a slow-burn plot with realistic conversations, I don't think you'll struggle with this at all. It made the character's conversations feel real, and it read like an actual human exchange, not robotic speech with the sole purpose of moving the plot along - which complimented the character's wonderfully, and THAT is a real testament to Damien's skill as an author.
I am highly (and impatiently) anticipating book 2, and find myself reminded why I usually binge a complete series in one go! Well done, Damien. To produce something of this calibre for your debut is very impressive - a standard I think all first time authors can only hope to achieve.
Good luck, and may the architects watch over you always <3
this was such a fun book!! i truly have never read anything quite like this, and i’d definitely be interested in entering the world of “gods” in fantasy books more!
the dragons in this book are just fantastic, and the world building was incredibly done.
i’m used to reading books that are more dialogue heavy, so it was a breath of fresh air for me to read a book with so much focus on the description - i really felt like i understood the world.
i will say, don’t get too attached to the characters in this book or you will suffer 🤣😭 I love Milo especially and the twins! also special shout out to Ember!!! ❤️
the way this world was created was so fascinating and well done, i loved the idea of the divide between Moranza and Dawan and the differences between the two.
Liana is an excellent FMC, she is brave and so strong with great morals, and Addan was such a loveable character!
I didn’t care much for Cal for the majority of the book, until his character arc was fleshed out but i think this was the whole point and i really enjoyed that. the character development of Shaan was such a great plot line!
The twists and turns in this book kept me guessing throughout and i really enjoyed them ☺️
The monsters were so fun and such a different idea, i really enjoyed this book 🤩
Set in the richly imagined world of Rybban—divided into the war-torn realms of Moranza and Dawan—this fantasy novel delivers an unforgettable journey of divine conflict, political intrigue, and personal transformation. When the Queen of Moranza is assassinated while extending peace, her daughter Liana is unwillingly thrust into a destiny far beyond her comprehension. What follows is a gripping tale told through multiple perspectives, including Liana, her loyal friend Addan, and her war-driven brother Cal.
The novel excels in world-building, offering readers a vivid landscape of dragons, cursed gods, and ancient rivalries. The writing leans into description over dialogue, creating a deeply immersive experience. Notably, the presence of tiny dragons, fantastical beasts, and a standout animal companion add charm and depth.
Liana emerges as a strong, morally grounded protagonist, whose journey is both compelling and emotionally resonant. Supporting characters—particularly Addan, the mysterious Shaan, and fan favorites like Milo and the twins—add richness and complexity. Cal’s gradual character development is especially well-executed, providing a satisfying arc that challenges initial impressions.
The Orchestra Of The Gods is a gripping fantasy tale that takes you an adventure of friendship, family, love and betrayal,Oh and it has little tiny dragons!
The story brings you in very quickly with the pacing flowing smoothly as the days pass by within the book. The multiple POVs from the different characters allows you to understand what is going on around you, allowing you to see all the angles of the story.
The world is created beautifully in your mind as the very surroundings can be seen around you as they are described. The many characters that you meet will bring laughter, sorrow and joy to you (I may have nearly cried once or twice)
Be warned you will feel connected to so many of the characters within this book and you will feel heartache, but as the story continues you will begin to understand why these events have happened and it ultimately ends with you feeling peaceful about what has unfolded. The setup for another book is done perfectly and I cannot wait to join Liana on her next adventure.
Please take your time to consider this book, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I have.
Orchestra of the Gods (OOTG) is the first self-published/indie author book that I have knowingly read and so I had no idea what to expect. Would it feel like a debut novel & translate as someone finding their feet in writing? Would I feel detached from the story itself knowing that I had picked it up after stumbling across the author on TikTok? No to all of the above, in fact it feels unjust that OOTG is as yet unknown to so many and just a matter of time before it becomes the next big hit.
In true fantasy style, OOTG is set in its own worldscape and includes some of the best loved fantasy features such as dragons, magic and adventure. What sets OOTG aside is how each of these have their own unique twists and so feel like a refreshing break away from what can sometimes feel repetitive within the genre. Nothing feels done for effect or shock value, and the subtle foreshadowing throughout is exemplary.
I laughed, I cried, and I truly felt immersed throughout the entirety of reading OOTG and cannot wait for the next book to be released to once again visit Rybban.
This is a no spoilers review. Wow this book is incredible details in this book is out of this world. Characters in Orchestra of the Gods are extremely extraordinary and main character is my favourite and others too. You will all see when you read the book. World building in this book is so unique and beyond a different way to other fantasy books. This book is unique and different which I adore so very much. I like reading different types fantasy books. This orchestra of the gods book is completely different to other fantasy books that I read. Just incredible different take of dragons. I adore the experience so very much that I want to go back again read the book all over again. It's that extremely extraordinary and incredible book. Orchestra of the Gods deserve 10 out 10 not a 5 star. It's much more than a 5 star read. It's a ten star read to me!!! The cover on the book is stunning and beautiful too. Please go and buy this extremely beautiful extraordinary stunning book today!!! Right now!!!
Wow —what a ride. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but this book pulled me in fast. Tiny dragons? Check. Ancient gods? Check. A young heroine caught between the two? Double check.
The world is super rich without feeling overwhelming, and I really enjoyed how the story balanced epic stakes with quieter, emotional moments. Liana, the main character, is relatable and tough, and her journey had me fully invested. I also loved the animal companion (you’ll know who I mean once you read it)—such a great touch of warmth and humor.
What stood out most to me was the way divine power and personal choices clashed. It wasn’t just magic and monsters—there was real heart here. Plus, the writing is smooth and easy to get lost in, even when the plot gets deep.
If you're into fantasy with gods, dragons (even the tiny kind), and stories that slowly build into something epic, this one's totally worth picking up. Can’t wait to see where book 2 goes
Orchestra of the Gods is a fast-paced, gripping fantasy full of heart, magic—and yes, tiny dragons! Damien Buckley weaves a thrilling story through the eyes of three main characters: Liana, a rebellious princess refusing to accept her royal fate; her brother Cal, the more grounded prince of Moranza; and Addan, Liana’s loyal misfit friend who just wants to keep her safe.
Things really kick off when Liana and Addan head into Dawan—unaware that, back home, the Queen is being murdered and their world is about to be turned upside down. What follows is a powerful journey of discovery, packed with action, danger, and emotional twists.
With sharp writing, great character dynamics, and just the right touch of emotion and magic, this is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy with a bit of heart. And did we mention the tiny dragons? What a great read!
After first coming across Damien back in July, I finally got the chance to pick up Orchestra of the Gods. Wow.
A fantastic debut. Original, vivid, and confident. The world is easy to see as you read, the characters feel genuinely lived-in, and there’s an emotional clarity to their journeys that pulls you in without effort. It’s rare to find a book where the prose doesn’t just tell you what’s happening, but actually transports you into the world. This one does.
The plot holds strong, the setting feels real on the page, and the character work gives the whole thing real heart. Honestly? No notes.
If you’re after a fantasy that pulls you into its world instead of simply narrating it, this is absolutely worth your time.
Plus? Tiny. Dragons. What a beautiful breath of fresh air into a very common and oversaturated fantasy trope.
I was convinced to buy this book after stumbling across Damien on TikTok. He makes a lot of videos and spends a great deal of time on TikTok Live, answering questions and promoting his book.
I think it’s probably my first experience of reading a self-published novel, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I’m not an avid fantasy reader, so I wasn’t the target audience.
That being said, I had a great time reading it. The characters were compelling, the pacing was expertly done, and the world-building was drip-fed throughout with aplomb.
I’ve also been concurrently reading The Last Moon of the Timekeeper, his prequel novella, to my daughter. It fills in some hinted-at backstory from Orchestra, and is another genuine pageturner.
A lush and complex high fantasy with small dragons but a huge heart!
In a world that has been split in two, one world worships the Architects through complex ritual and reverence whilst the other world is in the grips of religious tyranny and oversight.
Liana doesn't truly believe in The Architects, she has resigned them to old legends. But when a twist (or push) of Fate ends up shoving one of the Architects into her head she has to come to terms with not only the truth of her world, but the truth of herself.
Evocative of Sanderson's Cosmere, Buckley crafts a rich and immersive fantasy world with a wonderful cast of characters from a princess gone rogue to God's that seem more human than divine, an excellent and compelling opener to one of my new favourite series!
I listened to this on audio and was instantly transported into another world. The narrator pulled you in and was able to conjure up the visuals in your mind as the story unfolded. I liked the world and was built nicely throughout the story along with the characters who had depth and their own journey so you cared about each of them whether they were heroes or villains. The writing was tight without info dumping or over egging description. The different take on the tiny dragons was refreshing, giving another spin to a classic fantasy character. I also liked the spin of the Gods within the story which again gave this kind of fantasy character a new lease of life. Very intrigued and will be listening on when the next one is done so I can find out what happens.
I really loved this book. I loved the world, the magic, the characters. For me, this had everything I want from a good book. I want to fall into another world, and this achieved that for me. I felt all the heartbreak and anguish and elation, and I felt I never really saw where the story was going. The whole idea was really original, for fantasy lovers who are tired of the same old tropes, this is a must read. Just waiting (not so patiently) for the next one now!
I discovered this book when Damien’s live showed up on my TikTok fyp and I am so glad it did! Easily one of the best books I have ever read. If you are a lover of fantasy, dragons, gods, magic and adorable animal companions, this book is for you. I experienced so many emotions whilst reading this book and cannot wait for the prequel novella to come out so I can dive back into this series!
OMG!!! This is an amzing read, awesome magic, tiny dragons and the cutest animal companion ever. I can't wait to see where Damien takes it next. From an indie writer he knows how to build a world and populate it. He is the second indie writer I have read and I'm starting to like indie writers. Please take this book into consideration
Absolutely loved reading this book, I read the accompanying Novella first, definitely worth the time and money, and looking forward to the authors next installment from his Architects, great use of a reimagined Pantheon of gods, great story telling and emotional ups and downs from very early on in the story, captivating and difficult to not want more from this author
I was scrolling through Tiktok when I found this indie author and the blurb sold me along with tiny dragons. Its a chunky read which took me a while to finish, but one I really did enjoy. One I wouldn't have normally picked for myself but glad I came accross. We really do need to support indie authors as they have some hidden gems. Already looking forward to book two and what lies ahead.
Thank you Damien for this truly epic tale of young princess unwittingly getting involved in a world were God's fight for supremacy. I loved it from start to finish. I have read Best Sellers not as good as this. Pmlease read.
