Eat Yourself Healthy by Jamie Oliver has a lot of good intentions and solid ideas, but it didn’t fully work for me. The book strongly promotes a positive, feel-good approach to healthy eating, which I appreciated, and the recipes are clearly designed with nutrition in mind.

That said, many of the ingredients are difficult to find in Malaysia without visiting specialty or imported grocery stores. This makes some recipes less practical for everyday cooking unless you’re willing to substitute heavily or spend extra time hunting for ingredients.

I also found that while the food is undoubtedly healthy, it doesn’t always look very appetizing. Some dishes feel more functional than exciting, and I didn’t always feel inspired to cook them based on appearance alone which matters when you’re trying to enjoy healthier eating long-term.

Overall, it’s a decent book with useful concepts and good nutritional focus, but its limited accessibility and lack of visual appeal in some recipes hold it back. Better suited for readers with easy access to international ingredients or those who prioritize health over presentation and comfort.

Thank you Times Reads for sending me a copy in exchange for honest review.

Decent collection of quick 1-2 serving meals with an emphasis on eating well and getting plenty of veggies, grains and beans. Easy to follow recipes with photos for most of them.

UK celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s latest book is loaded with over 300 pages of delicious recipes with the main aim to offer you healthy go-to meals you can whip up in no time at all.
Eat Yourself Healthy, subtitled food to change your life, also includes a two-week kickstarter meal plan.
The book is published by Michael Joseph, an imprint under Penguin Books.
Beautiful colour photographs appear alongside each recipe. Instructions are simple and easy to follow, taking a lot of the hassle out of the dreaded daily question —what ’s for supper?
The book features recipes in categories such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend — making it quick to plan meals around a specific time of the day.
Oliver has also included a section on healthier sweet treats, drinks, cooking sustainably and tips on how to up your seven-a-day fruit and vegetable intake.
In the introduction to the book Oliver says: “I turned 50 this year, and that shift from one decade to another really gave me a moment to pause and reflect on my own health, to think about what I need to do to get myself in the best shape for the future.
“In turn, it inspired me to write this book, to share all the knowledge and insights I’ve garnered over the years, and to help you on your own health
journey in the most authentic way I can, which is through delicious, abundant, joyous, beautiful food. Because, let’s face it, we’ve all got to eat!”
Golden cheese & jammy berries is a perfect breakfast as we head into summer, while the aubergine involtini has become a firm favourite in my home. The flavours are so more-ish! Chickpea arrabbiata only takes mere minutes from the pan to the table. The spicy chickpeas are just marvelous.
Have a go yourself with these three recipes from the book, but you’d be well advised to purchase your own copy of Eat Yourself Healthy.

EAT YOURSELF HEALTHY by Jamie Oliver is published by Penguin Random House Australia in September 2025.
Review by Lorraine Parker
I have long been a “fan” of Jamie Oliver. Albeit a quietly critical one. To me his style has always been ‘simple’, quick and easy with delicious results, especially for families. As an advocate of science-based nutrition, I felt that he overlooked this very important aspect in his previous and popular publications.
“Eat Yourself Healthy – Food to change Your Life” is an all-encompassing, beautifully presented, balanced and tactile collection of all ‘things’ food and especially good health.
There is nothing better than holding a book, propping it open, seeing colour plates of each recipe, preparing and cooking, Inspirational!
Jamie’s ‘awakening’ that he is turning fifty this year, along with, I believe, the books dedication to Michael Mosley have combined to make this book so very functional, factual, appealing and most of toward good health.
His recommendation of “getting seven a day” (of fruit and vegetables) and his explanation of just how much is a portion is a great beginning for his newest book.
As I initially ‘skipped’ through the pages I booked marked numerous dishes to add to my must do repertoire. All for good health and enjoyment. With a closer, slower look I noticed that every recipe has a number in a small circle at the top, 1 to 7. This indicates how many of the 7 foods recommended are in each dish.
To name a few; “Spicy tofu & sweet pepper eggs” for breakfast; “Carrot and sweet potato fritters for lunch; “Thai-style fish curry” for dinner; “Happy fish pie” for the weekend; and all of the “Healthier sweet treats and Drinks.
Jamie’s book closes with a detailed nutrition analysis of every recipe. The back cover is as appealing as the front. His best publication to date.
This would be a marvellous, gift to treasure for any loved one, any time, but why not for this Christmas!

I'm all about healthy eating, so I was eager to checkout this book from my library. I often borrow cookbooks first in order to decide if I want to add them to my collection. While the intent of the book was a good one, this cookbook didn't quite do it for me.

On the plus side the recipes are fairly simple, probably prepared fairly quickly, if you are a seasoned cook. The instructions read almost like someone recorded exactly what Oliver was doing from the time he started a particular recipe until it was served, each step prepped, prepared and presented. He also manages to use as few pans as possible, often reusing a pan for a later step rather than taking out a new one. The ingredient measurements have been Americanized, which was a help, but the ingredient list often contained foods perhaps more readily available/familiar to a British audience -- like Vegamite, runny honey, Bombay mix, harissa paste, fresh curry leaves, lime pickle, balls of stem ginger in syrup, oatcakes. Perhaps in an effort to make the ingredients list more universal, the list sometimes ended up including items very vaguely described-- 1 fresh red chili [what kind? what size?], "your favorite curry paste" [there are dozens of kinds which would dramatically alter the outcome], "season to perfection" [with what?], "1 teaspoon mixed spice" [which ones?]. No ingredient was terribly exotic, but for those of us that don't live in large American cities, it might require a trip to a local foreign food market or perhaps an order from Amazon. I pulled a couple of the recipes to try out, but I won't be purchasing this book for my collection.

As Jamie Oliver turned 50 this year, he took a moment to pause and reflect on his own health which inspired him to write this book. Through this book, he shares the knowledge and insights he has gained after decades in the wonderful world of food.

The recipes are broken down into three categories: breakfast, lunch/dinner/weekend and sweet treats. All of them use healthy, convenient ingredients with appropriate calorie counts. The best part of the book is the 2-week kickstarter to help us start making healthy changes in our routine! The plan serves two, which makes it really useful for planning meals. You’ll also find 50 hacks for quick healthy shortcuts on busy days.

I enjoyed flipping through the book, salivating at the mouth-watering, aesthetic pictures of food! I’m already making mental notes of what to buy. I miss Weetabix now. And I absolutely love the ideas from the treats and drinks section! Besides that, I’ve gained a lot of ideas to tweak my ordinary meals.

Thank you Times Reads and Putri for this inspiring book that I can use to begin my 2026, insyaAllah.

Jamie Oliver has cranked out another cookbook, and it will be another book that I will not be buying. Since Jamie Oliver lives in Britain, he writes his recipes using unique British ingredients that cannot always be found easily in North America. One of this book's recipes included lime pickles, and despite searching down multiple International food aisles in grocery stores, I couldn't find it. Online, the price is exorbitant and I would never buy it. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/44064...

In addition, some of the ingredients that he combines in these recipes seem a bit bizarre. Sorry Oliver, but your editor needs to do some work on taste testing the recipes before publication....

Jamie Oliver's "Eat Yourself Healthy" delivers exactly what you'd expect: beautiful food photography and accessible recipes focused on health without sacrificing flavor. The 2-week meal plan offers a practical starting point for anyone looking to improve their eating habits. While the 120 recipes cover a good range of options from Meatball Traybakes to Strawberry Filo Tarts, I found the book lacking a bit of depth. It feels somewhat polished but flat, missing the personal background stories that make recipes truly engaging. I tried a few dishes and enjoyed them, but didn't feel that immediate excitement to dive into more. Would have appreciated more healthy dessert options. A solid cookbook, but not particularly groundbreaking.

What a wonderful cookbook! Checked it out of the library, and had to buy it, the first few things we made were so delicious! I love the unusual combinations of foods, and some ingredients we didn't know about before. We've been able to find the ingredients (or reasonable subs) easily. Recipes come together in a reasonable amount of time, and I so appreciate that he uses some frozen and jarred ingredients, and reuses pans. It will appeal to a more sophisticated palate, not your usual meat and potatoes. Delicious! I bought more for gifts. :)

Jamie turned 50 and is on a health kick. Most of these serve 1-2 people, and are low on time and energy. I loved his enthusiasm, and the recipes are all sound, with a photo for each. It's just sort of the same diet food - he's got an overnight oats base, smoothies, etc.

The crab spaghetti is incredibly indulgent-tasting and a real treat. I also liked his tray bakes - your family may not realize they're eating healthier if it's a meat ball casserole.

Worth checking out for some healthy recipes and a does of cheer.

A beautiful collection of recipes that are not just healthy but also pleasing to the eye, comfort food and more importantly filling! The words within the book and surrounding the recipes are supportive and not condescending. As a vegetarian it is very easy to see where to swap meals or just swap an ingredient out to make it suitable. Another brilliant cookbook from Jamie and one I would definitely recommend, the 2 week plan alone is worth the money!

I really like Jamie Oliver and I wish I liked his cookbooks better. I was excited to check out this new cookbook but I felt like most of the recipes didn't work for me. I know fish is very healthy and I wish I could eat it, but unfortunately I'm allergic to fish and shellfish and at least 1/3 of the recipes were fish. Honestly, none of the recipes looked that good to me. I like the premise of the cookbook and trying to eat healthier, but this one is not for me.

There are a couple of recipes in this book that I will try, but overall I don't love it. They disguise themselves as healthy recipes, but many use pre-made sauces and ingredients. If you choose not to use them, the cooking and prep time increases a ton. Most of the recipes just aren't appealing to me. No flavor, or tons of grains and dairy, which we don't eat. I love Jamie's older cookbooks, but they seem less inspired these days.

Not the best Jamie Oliver cookbook I've ever read. It would be a great present for someone who is moving out of home for the first time. A lot of recipes are easy and for one or two servings.

This was also the book that led me to learn that some people call snow peas, mangetout. Here I was thinking it was just a Wet Leg song.

A very handy read and affirming for the changes I have already made in my diet. Jamie includes very easy and “doable” recipes for the average cook. Some great tips and nothing too “fancy” with ingredients most will have access to.

I admire the mission, but most of the recipes in this book either included ingredients that aren't available where I live, not even at a nearby international market, or ingredients that I dislike. So this is a well-intentioned book, and the photography is gorgeous, but this isn't a good fit for me.

I want to like Jamie Oliver, but for me this book reminded me of why I don’t always. Is this book a good idea -sure, but some of the flavor combos were a bit too odd and most of the recipes would not work for my family. However I’m sure some people will like this book.

An ok cookbook. Would have been better if the nutritional information was printed by each recipe instead of in an appendix.
