This was a fun, fast-paced read that kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. I greatly appreciated how the author was able to blend his fictional characters with historical ones in a manner that did not make either category feel weakly-drawn compared to the other. I liked how he did not shy away from some of the grittier aspects of the Sons of Liberty and their activities in Boston, while also showing character distinctions between major players such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere. Since this is a first volume, I am very interested in seeing what other historical characters will play a role in sequel novels and anticipate that Dr. Joseph Warren may come on the scene soon, given his extensive involvement in Patriot espionage. The protagonist has an interesting development in this first installment, as we see him struggle with his conscience when it comes to taking human life, and his bond forged through desperate circumstances with the British officer defector is a unique one. The author successfully made me genuinely unsure whether or not the protagonist might go through with killing him. Time will only tell whether the harsh work he has embarked upon will harden his heart, especially as war draws closer and erupts, or if he will manage to maintain his winning humanity. All in all, an exciting start to a promising series, just in time for the 250th commemorations!
