This is a smart, amusing guide which explains how any geek, Star Trek or otherwise, can land the woman of his dreams by following the example of intergalactic ladies' man, Captain Kirk.
3 stars does *not* mean it's on equal footing with my other 3 star books. It was designed to be humorous and silly, and I liked it for what it was.
Maybe if everyone looked at people for what they actually *were* instead of looking at people for who they want them to be, they can find "perfection beneath the flaws".
A short and simple book. It's humor and I got a few laughs. The descriptions of women are very stereotypical but I assume that was on purpose and done for humor. One thing I like is having a list of all the ladies that Kirk courted in the original series. I wish there'd have been more pictures of them but I remember them well enough I suppose from having seen the episodes many dozens of times.
Very funny synopsis of the women who enter Kirk’s life with quotes and colorful commentary. Best enjoyed by people who have watched the series and know the episodes referred to.
I picked this up in the last days of Borders from a bargain bin for less than a dollar, mostly because I'm a Star Trek fan and I was amused. I never got around to actually reading it until now. It's got some serious Trekkie Kirk-worship going on, with a slant towards how to get women. Well, I'm happily married, so I don't need any help with getting women, and that's really all this book is about. Kirk is just the motif used for all examples. So . . . not worth reading unless you're a man who is a Trekkie AND in need of help getting a girlfriend AND have a sense of humor about it. But it was fun, and well-written enough, so . . . well, I give it 3 stars, and move on . . .
This book purports to be a guide to dating and women based on the love life of Star Trek's Captain Kirk. It is clearly meant to be tongue in cheek case study, as well as a book for the Trekkie or Trekker.
And that is one of the biggest problems with this book. It doesn't know what it wants to be. The author needed to commit to either being a complete encyclopedia of the women Kirk has romanced (in the vein of the Nitpicker's Guide) or being a parody of the state of romance in Star Trek as viewed through Kirk's eyes (in the vein of Sev Trek). Because the author has not made that choice, the book is not very satisfying.
To be fair, the author did try and group the women according to themes, the seducers, those with self-esteem problems, and the ex-partners. But in doing so he missed at least one very obvious one, Carole Marcus, the mother of Kirk's only known son. There are other women Kirk has romanced, but they do not appear here. So if you are an encyclopedic Trekkie, this is not the book for you. And while there are smiles, this is not a laugh slap riot.

Very trite book. One learns nothing new about any of the characters. I have read just about every Trek book out there and this one is the only one that I have ever felt that I did not get good value on my money.
Entertaining, and even slightly helpful! Full of bad puns and so many references that they'll be coming out your ears, but that's okay - it somehow works.
