Tomás had long resigned himself to the voices…
Until he found his constant.

Tomás’s childhood passed by in a fog of mysterious voices that no one else could hear. Without a family or friend to keep his mind focused, and no skills to guide him through life, he believed he would end up on the streets once he came of age.

Until, one day, a mysterious visitor sees potential in Tomás.

Without forewarning, Tomás uproots his life, and travels across the world to join a school dedicated to the Mist Keepers, the Gods of Death. There, he joins a cohort of young disciples, dedicating their lives to the balance of Life and Death.

Yet despite his newfound schooling, the voices never cease. With the help of his bunkmate, Cevin, he uncovers the true nature of these voices.

The voices carry secrets beyond Tomás’s imagination. As they reveal the true nature of the Mist Keepers, Tomás must decide if he stands with or against them. Although is possible to stand against Death?

In this installment of The Story Collector’s Almanac, join Tomás as he searches for his constants and becomes the quiet peacekeeper from The Mist Keeper’s Apprentice.

Rated 14+ for mentions of child abandonment, suicide, and death.

A Standalone Standout of the Series

Pacifying the Mist is book 6 of the Story Collector’s Almanac, which this is the first book I read of the series. Even without having read the previous 5 books, the author does a great job of building the world and getting the reader acquainted with it and the characters. Which was great for a newcomer like me!

Following the story of Tomas, an illiterate orphan who’s heard voices in his head all his life. When he soon learns he’s been selected to study at the Phrontersity, a place where people like him learn to hone their strange abilities, he begins a journey to self-discovery. What unfolds is a magical coming-of-age tale wrapped in fantasy and mystery, with the ever-present Mist serving as both setting and symbol.

It’s a true page-turner. I found myself flying through chapter after chapter, eager to see how Tomas would grow and what secrets would unfold next.

After reading this one, I will go through the previous books and see how it all connects. Excited to read it and the next ones coming out!

I enjoyed this story...Despite being part of a series; it easily stands alone.
We get insight into Tomas's story, as well as some answers about the War One between Life and Death. (We also get to meet Cevin before he becomes a monster).

Tomas (and those around him) thinks he's crazy. It's all those voices in his head. The one day he meets a man who sees potential in him. Then another who becomes a friend. Tomas discovers he's actually hearing the thoughts of those around him. As he's learning about his magic and the duties of Mist Keepers, Tomas is having difficulties with the heartlessness of those that rule his rhealm and instead moves in a way that makes him become the "man" he is.

What a rollercoaster of a book. It had so many different parts to it: sweet romances, heartbreak, good plot, good character development, descriptive writing. I really enjoyed this book and seeing Tomás grow into himself. One of my favourite books from this author. I would’ve liked to have felt a bit more emotion in the emotional parts of the book but I am hard to make feel the emotions not just read them so that’s probably just a me thing.

While all of the Mist Keepers are both powerful and important , until now, I didn't realize how integral Tomas is to the Effluvium's past, present, and future.

Tomas comes-of-age while grappling with love and loss, transforming from a lonely outcast whose powers are mistaken for insanity to a Mistkeeper who can influence thoughts and the course of history.

E.S. Barrison once again adds depth to the Council of the Mist Keepers with this engrossing and heartfelt Anthology addition.
