C.L. Mecca is the author of steamy paranormal romance that transports readers to a world of love, passion, power and control. She also writes historical romance as Cecelia Mecca.

Every heroine, from Lady Sara in the Border Series to Alessandra Fiore in Bloodwite, is your best friend-- the one who kicks ass and takes names. When these ladies meet alpha-males who try to take control, sparks fly with increasing fervor. If you favor sleep, don't start reading her books late at night.

Cecelia writes the Amazon bestselling Border Series which takes readers to an admittedly romanticized time of knights and castles in 13th century Northumbria along the Anglo-Scottish border. aka Hot English Knights AND Sexy Scottish Highlanders She's also currently jumping into a new world which tests the patience of even the most steadfast romance heroine. After all, dealing with the ultimate bad boys-- sexy, wealthy and swoon-worthy vampires-- is not for the faint of heart. In other words, she's releasing her first contemporary paranormal series in January 2019.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood books for a copy of this e-arc!

I was lucky enough to also receive an e-arc for book 1 of this series, Whispers of War and Storms, as well a few months ago and was eager to keep reading in this world!

This is the 2nd book in the Heirs of Elydor series, but follows different characters this book. Rowan, our MMC, does trickle over from book 1, as does the overall underlying plot, so I recommend reading book 1 first for solid background of the world and character motivations. Our FMC, Nerys, is new to the story but has quickly become a favorite of mine!

Our story begins with Rowan off to the clan of Thalssia to seek out the Tidal Pearl from its Queen, for its hope to help in aid to reopen the gate between this realm and the human realm. It won’t be as easy as anyone hopes though. Upon his arrival, he is immediately provided an escort for everywhere he goes. Nerys is a powerful Thalassia guard and assigned to be Rowan’s shadow during his stay. Their attraction to one another is instant but secrets that lay between them only bring heartbreak and danger to their lives. Through love and support though, can they break through the barriers that would keep them apart?

I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 and love Mev and Kael’s love story, and didn’t really think I’d like diverting away from them, but I honestly think I fell more in love with Rowan and Nerys! This book is definitely fast-paced and as with book 1, isn’t a traditional slow burn as more of an insta-attraction to lovers story. The tables are kind of turned with Nerys being the powerful one and Rowan being the “weaker” human. We also add in some side characters that I think will come into play in future books for sure!

There was more spice 🌶️ in this book than there was in book 1 which I was SO happy to see because I needed more in book 1! There was also a scene during a spicy moment that had me kicking my feet with giddiness! ❤️❤️

The book ends on a cliffhanger in a sense that it’s setting up a next book nicely. I’m hoping we can keep not only Rowan and Nerys in the next book, but round Mev and Kael back in as well! They’re all just such different characters that are fun to read about but round everything else out well I’d love to see them all together moving forward in the story!

DNF

Thank you theboldbookclub and netgalley for providing me with an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am sad to write this review because I understand the time and effort and love that goes into writing a book, but as I got this arc in exchange for an honest review that is what I will give.

I really tried to finish this book and to enjoy it, but unfortunately I had to stop around 40% of the book as the story really did not capture me and the book (while written in quite easy language) was incredibly hard to read and to make sense of. This might be partly because I didn’t realise when I applied for an arc of this book that it was book 2 in a series, but as the characters of book 1 and 2 are different and there was some reflection of the events of book 1 so I don’t feel this should have been a problem in itself. The writing just was not that well and the sentences, and pacing were really off.

Then to move on to the FMC and MMC, I usually am not to bothered by this, but their relationship was so much insta love that it took my out of the story so much, what do you mean you just met and are from different clans with hesitating attitudes towards each other but are immediately head over heals attracted and trust the other so much in a way that just doesn’t make sense? And there was no side character at all that questioned this either, no they fully went with it and even exposed more secrets of the other person (without them being frustrated by it?!)

The other thing that bothered me and pushed me towards the DNF is that this book had so many cliches (and not in the good way), with the oh focus on what you can do not on what you might not, and I believe in you but do you believe in yourself too? It just was a bit to much for me.

The premises for this book is really great, and with the comparison to other great books (e.g. Fourth wing and ACOTAR) there are just a lot of promises made that this book just does and can not live up to, and maybe in that way it sat itself up for failure as well? So to conclude I think the idea for this book series is definitely there but the execution just falls short unfortunately.

Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released on May 11th called, Tide of Waves and Secrets. This is book 2 in this series, and I loved this story just as much as the first book (Whisper of War and Storms). This book is about Rowan, who is tasked at the end of the first book with going to ask the queen of the water kingdom for the Tidal Pearl, a legendary artifact needed to open the gate Mev came through in the first book. When he arrives he is assigned an escort while staying in the palace, her name is Nerys. She is fierce, kind, and can wield water better than the queen herself. There is instant chemistry and undeniable attraction between these two characters. Nerys doesn't think the queen will hand over the Tidal Pearl to help Rowan and his friends but she believes in what they are doing, trying to open the gate, and she wants to help them. So she decides to do the one thing that she has been scared to do yet feels is her destiny, challenging the queen for the throne. This book was fast paced, fun, romantic, with some action and suspense tied in! The descriptions of the water kingdom were so beautiful and vivid I felt as if I was there. I felt like I wasn't just reading this story but actually a part of it, like I was experiencing it rather than reading it. I loved everything about this story and I don't know how I'm supposed to wait for the next book now! 💙📚

Thank you to the author and to the publisher for this ARC of Tide of Waves and Secrets, in exchange for an honest review.

I just finished Tide of Waves and Secrets by C.L. Mecca and wow… I have a serious book hangover!

This one’s an ARC and honestly, I loved it. Thank you boldwoodeverafter for this copy.I usually lean toward romantasy more than pure fantasy,I need that romance and banter in my reads! This book gave me exactly that and more. It’s Book 2 in the Heirs of Elydor series, but you don’t need to read Book 1 as it follows different characters.
The story follows Nerys, a guard in the immortal realm, who’s assigned to shadow a mysterious human, Rowan. He’s on a mission for the legendary Tidal Pearl, but sparks fly and loyalties are tested. The world-building was stunning, and I loved the dual POV between Nerys and Rowan.

I kind of wish we had more POVs though…there were a few side characters I would’ve loved to explore! And yep, there are some spicy scenes (think ACOTAR level). The entire setup of the world is so beautiful and magical.

This was a solid 5-star romantasy for me! Fast-paced, fun, and full of heart.
It’s out on May 11th,add it to your TBR!

A Stunning Sequel That Deepens an Already Rich World.

This was a fantastic sequel to Whisper of War and Storms, expanding the world in exciting and beautiful ways. I loved that we followed new characters while continuing to explore the vast, intriguing setting that first drew me in.

I gave the first book 5 stars and enjoyed this one even more. The setting in this installment was especially captivating—there’s something magical about a world where water is so central to the characters' lives and culture.

In this story, Rowan is sent to retrieve the Tidal Pearl from the Thalassarian Queen. While at the palace, he’s accompanied by Nerys, who has been assigned to guide him. As their journey unfolds, secrets are revealed, and the story builds toward pivotal moments for both of them.

Like the first book, this story leans more toward insta-love than slow burn, which I didn’t mind at all. The author does an excellent job of showing the instant chemistry and connection between Rowan and Nerys. In fact, I think I might even prefer Rowan over Kael from the first book!

Once again, the world-building is phenomenal. I remember praising the first book for its rich detail and how naturally the information was delivered—and the same holds true here. Everything is revealed at a perfect pace, making the story immersive without being overwhelming.

I look forward to reading more by this author. Thank you to Boldwood books for the earc of this book. All thoughts are my own.

C.L. Mecca’s Tide of Waves and Secrets sweeps readers back into the enchanting realm of Thalassaria with a story that blends courtly intrigue, elemental magic, and a romance that defies the laws of mortality.

When Sir Rowan, a human knight, arrives seeking the legendary Tidal Pearl to reopen the gates between realms, he expects resistance from the immortal queen. What he doesn’t anticipate is Nerys, the formidable Thalassarian guard assigned to watch his every move. Strong, loyal, and hiding a power greater than anyone suspects, Nerys finds her sense of duty tested as her connection to Rowan deepens into something she can’t deny. But in a kingdom where loyalty means submission, their growing bond is as dangerous as it is intoxicating.

Mecca’s world-building continues to shine, with Thalassaria’s oceanic magic and political tensions rendered in vivid, immersive detail. The dual POV narration allows readers to feel both Rowan’s grief-tinged determination and Nerys’s struggle between loyalty and destiny. Their romance leans toward insta-love, but it’s filled with yearning, tension, and enough open-door spice to satisfy romantasy fans.

What sets this book apart is how it balances romance with larger themes of power, betrayal, and the courage to challenge injustice. Watching Nerys wrestle with her duty to her queen while realizing her own strength makes her one of the series’ most compelling leads yet.

Though best enjoyed after Whisper of War and Storms, this installment can stand on its own, offering enough context for new readers without slowing the story’s pace. The cliffhanger ending promises even higher stakes in the next book, leaving fans eager to see where Rowan and Nerys’s journey leads.

With its rich world, fast-paced plot, and emotionally charged romance, Tide of Waves and Secrets is a must-read for fans of fantasy romance who crave both passion and adventure.

2.75 stars (rounded up to 3)

I really wanted to like this book., unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. When I first received an arc of Tide of Waves and Secrets , I was pretty excited to read this. However, as it turns out, this is book 2 in a series of standalones set in the same world. While that's a non-issue, I feel like if I had read book 1, I would have understood the world building a little bit better. The writing style was easy to read and written in simple, but sharp language. However, the sentence structuring was really strange and somewhat clunky at points, making it all the more hard to grasp the story. As for the characters, I liked both Rowan and Nerys individually. But together? I just couldn't see their relationship working. For one, there was insta-love. And I don't mind insta-love as a trope when its done right, but here, it wasn't and it failed to show any chemistry between the two.

All of this made for an off-putting reading experience, and unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book at all. However, I will say that the writing has potential to be great, and I will keep an eye out for what C.L. Mecca's gonna write.

Thank you Boldwood Ever After for sending me an e-ARC!

The second book in the series & I’d recommend reading in order to fully appreciate it. The author is one of my must read authors & so I decided to try this series. I’m not a fan of romantasy & can’t see that changing but I’m enjoying the series & look forward to the rest of it. I really liked both Rowan & Nerys & enjoyed their insta love story. The pace is good, the characters well portrayed, also the next book was set up nicely
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

2.5/5 stars! I've said it once and I'll say it a million times. STOP comparing your stories to other mainstream authors, such as JLA, Rebecca Yarros, and SJM. It sets an unrealistic expectation and if you're going to put that expectation into place in your own marketing, then I'm going to hold the story to that level... without that, this probably would have been a solid 3.75/4 star read. But upon comparing the depth of characterization, world building, and plot development to the authors the work was compared to, it was lacking.

This is the second book in the Heirs of Elydor series by author C.L. Mecca. It doesn't work well as a standalone, despite having mostly unique characters, so I encourage readers to start with book one. I did like the journey of Rowan and the way he grew across the story, but didn't buy the romance.

Thank you to Boldwood books and netgalley for my the chance to read an ARC of this book.
I didn't realise when starting this book that this is the second book in the series. While I feel like you can read this one as a standalone its probably better to read them in order as a way to come familiar with the world.
The world seems like a beautiful place, I would have liked some more world building but I think that's where the first book might come in. It gave Avatar: The Last Airbender vibes with the different elements.
The thing that let me down was the insta love between the two main characters, well it was insta everything, insta love, insta telling each other secrets, insta trust etc. There was no build up to their trust in one another, there was no relationship developing.
Overall this book wasn't for me.

ARC review
Publication date 11 May 2025

3,5 stars

“Tide of Waves and Secrets” by C.L. Mecca is the second book in the "Heirs of Elydor" series.

I received an ARC from Boldwood Books (via Netgalley).
Opinions from this review are completely my own.

Even if it is a continuation of the action from “Whisper of War and Storms”, this book follows different characters.
Sir Rowan is a mysterious human that arrives in the immortal realm of Thalassaria seeking the legendary Tidal Pearl that can open the portal between realms.
Nerys is a powerful guard, assigned as his escort while he is in the palace.

The attraction between them is there from the start (you could say it's insta-love).
I liked the magic and the story from this book. Nerys had to prepare to fight for her place in the kingdom and I liked her journey of accepting her power.
There was more romance ands spice than in the previous book and the pace was medium to fast.
Still, even if the book is quite short (under 300 pages), it did not keep me engaged as much as the 1st one and some actions felt repetitive.

What I also liked is that Mev and Kael make an appearance and there is more action towards the end.

Overall it was enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the next book.

I really enjoyed this story! Maybe even more than book 1! An insta-love but they didn't give in instantly, this always makes things more interesting. The new characters were very interesting and I was excited to learn about them all.
The story was so well written that I didn't find it confusing reading words and names I was unfamiliar with. It just seemed natural and flowed very well.
I adored Rowan and Nerys but my absolutely favourite part of this story was the magic and otherworldly experiences that we were a part of. I need to take a ride on a mythical water creature with mosaic scales and watch giant water serpents dance.

So looking forward to book 3!

I want to say thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me the privilege to be able to read this book.

I'm kind of stumped on words here for this book. I loved it, just like the first in the series this book was like coming home. I truly don't know how to explain it but that is exactly what it's like reading this series. There was so much more at stake in this book, than the last and Nerys was just as an incredible heroine (actually a little more) than Mev and it was so awesome to see all that she was. I love finding out more about Rowan he's even more incredible in his own book than he already was in the first! I loved getting to see more and more of this world C. L. Mecca has created and I really don't ever want it to end. I have no complaints about this book whatsoever and I can't wait until I can bring it home where it belongs!

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to continue loving a series you brought into my life!

Thank you to the author and the publisher, Boldwood Books, for sharing an ARC of this book with me on NetGalley!!

I liked it. I liked this book a lot. As for book one, it was fast paced enough to keep me entertained from the beginning to the very end without any need to stop reading. It is true that this time around we don’t have a young girl who’s finding out the truth of her heritage but a young woman who will possibly rival her own queen for the protection, guidance and leading of her own people. And a messenger from another kingdom (when the characters of the previous books were mentioned, I did get kinda nostalgic about it, to be honest) who was definitely not expecting to be enchanted by this strong and resilient woman. Rowin and Nerys’s love story is wonderfully romantic and I loved it. Always supporting one another in a strangers to lovers impossible romance dynamic when their duty towards their own people got on the way of their love. And until the end, you’re not sure how it will go for them. So … you’ll have to read it to know !!!

ARC Generously provided by Boldwood Books and NetGalley

I am definitely enjoying this series so far!

This story follows a new couple in the Heirs of Elydor universe, continuing off the overarching storyline of book 1, but introducing a new cast of characters (I definitely disagree with other reviewers who say this can be read as a standalone! Book 1 is definitely essential for laying the groundwork of the world building, and understanding our characters' motivations.)

This story follows Rowan (our recurring character from book 1) and his escort Nerys, a noble-born woman in the kingdom, as he visits Thalassaria in an attempt to convince their Queen to allow the use of their relic, the Tidal Pearl. Naturally, Rowan immediately falls for Nerys, and chooses to back her as she challenges the queen for the throne.

I very much enjoyed the chemistry and rapport between Rowan and Nerys, and this story introduced some additional side characters and fleshed out the world building much more thoroughly than book 1.

I have few critiques of this story, but several things did keep this from being a 5-star read for me:

Firstly, if you aren't a fan of an insta-love story, this series may be a skip. I will digress, the progression of the characters' relationship felt much more natural and less rushed than it did in the series debut, but that's saying something. If you're after slow-burn, this is not it.

Additionally, I'm struggling with some aspects of the world-building. Particularly the argument that time progresses differently between Earth, and Elydor. The characters continually cite the time difference as a way to keep Mev from panicking about her sudden disappearance from Earth by saying time passes differently, stating she's only been missing briefly to those on the other side (we were given in this book an approximate ratio of 1:3000 for the passage of time) However at the same time, all of our characters describe this near 30-year closure of the portal the same way on both sides.

Speaking of the gate to Earth- I'm going to need a much more solid reason why we are so desperate to open the gate again- especially at the risk of starting a war. The logic behind this being the BIG TASK for the whole series doesn't feel overly compelling. As the only reason we're given is currently the Air clan's missing queen, and the off chance that a few humans ~may~ want to leave?

Lastly, the final battle as Nerys challenged the queen did feel a little anti-climactic to me. I was expecting much more drama- especially given how fiercly the queen was trying to dissuade the challenge from even happening.

Ovrerall, I did enjoy this story, and given how much stronger this story was than book 1, I am really looking forward to where this series goes!

Tide of Waves and Secrets | C. L. Mecca
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/7

Tide of Waves and Secrets is the second book in the Heirs of Elydor series. It can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone (I did not realize it was the second in a series at first and still followed the storyline and thoroughly enjoyed the book!) but, I would recommend that you read Whisper of War and Storms first, I think it would have made it even more enjoyable for me.

Elydor is made up of three separate clans, plus the human kingdom made up of humans trapped in Elydor when the gate between the realms was shut. We follow Sir Rowan, a human keeper (a sort of secret society that no one but other keepers knows about) as he visits Thalassaria to convince the queen to aid in reopening the gates. Humans, while not treated badly, are not exactly welcomed in Thalassaria, and during Rowans’s time there he is monitored by his assigned escort, Nerys, a powerful and immortal water wielder, who has differing views from the queen she serves. Nerys and Rowan are inexplicably and undeniably drawn to each other, but both have their own destinies, not to mention drastically different lifespans, pulling them in separate directions.

Tide of Wave and Secrets weaves a vivid world with a unique magic system, forbidden love, slow burn, protective MMC, and spice that delivers.

”You will enjoy this because I intend to worship you, Nerys, as you deserve.”

I loved Nerys and Rowan. They had a genuinely strong relationship where they both wanted the best for each other and desperately wanted a way for that to include them being together. There was a strong foundation, slow burn, spice 🔥, and yearning.

There were twists and turns in the magic system and the plot kept me turning the pages! I do wish I had read the books in order, as it seems like some characters reappear and I think I would have had a better understanding from the start of Rowan. But even with that, I was sucked into the book from the first chapter.

Therese are some inconsistencies and times where I think the world and characters could have been built out more, but that might have partly been due to me starting on the second book.

I definitely recommend picking up the heirs of Elydor and I’m looking forward for the next in the series!

Here’s my CAWPILE review breakdown for Tide of Waves and Secrets. Thank you so much to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and C.L. Mecca for the eARC, in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this eCopy to review

I was instantly swept away into the mesmerizing world of Tide of Waves and Secrets. As the second installment in the series, this book not only deepens the narrative established in the first volume but also introduces fresh layers of magic, intrigue, and emotional complexity that invigorate the entire saga. From the moment I turned the first page, I felt as though I had been transported to Thalassaria—a realm where elemental forces ebb and flow like the tides, and every secret hints at profound mysteries and dangers.

The story follows the enigmatic Sir Rowan, a human adventurer whose quest for the legendary Tidal Pearl leads him straight into the heart of this immortal domain. Along the way, he encounters Nerys, a devoted Thalassarian guard assigned to escort and protect him. As they journey through opulent yet treacherous palace corridors and navigate a labyrinth of shifting allegiances and ancient rituals, the tension between duty and forbidden desire simmers beneath every interaction. Their story is not just a quest for a mystical artifact—it’s a personal journey that challenges the boundaries between loyalty and the longing for something beyond the prescribed roles set by their worlds.

What truly sets Tide of Waves and Secrets apart is C.L. Mecca’s impeccable blending of high-stakes mystery with an intimate character study. The rich, immersive world-building is complemented by vividly drawn characters who evolve with each twist and turn in the plot. As political intrigue and ancient magic coalesce, I found myself reflecting on how our own desires often pull us between the demands of duty and the yearning for love and freedom.

This book is a brilliant addition to the series; it not only builds on the foundations laid in the first installment but also sets up tantalizing possibilities for the future. Every page is infused with both wonder and the promise of more secrets to uncover, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

For me, Tide of Waves and Secrets is a masterful exploration of epic romance and adventure, richly layered with intrigue and the beautiful clash of personal passion against the backdrop of larger-than-life mythical quests.

I loved this book! This is the dual POV semi-instalove, slightly spicy, open-door fantasy romance that I needed to read right now. This is the second book in the series, but can be read alone. Enough background is included to give you a sense of what is going on in the big picture.

Nerys (love that name!) is a long-lived water magic user quietly living her diplomat life and is reluctant to challenge the status quo despite her moral disagreements with her queen. Then Sir Rowan, a smart, handsome, and sly human with a secret, comes to her queen, requesting the use of a priceless artefact (which they all know she won't grant) to help the human world. As a diplomat, Nerys is assigned to entertain, occupy, and keep an eye on him. Rowan can tell how powerful Nerys truly is and that she is destined to rule. They both feel the attraction between them, but they can never work for so many reasons. Do they have to put their feelings aside for destiny, or does fate have bigger plans?

I wouldn't call this an instalove, but I would say that they both fall fast and I freaking loved it! I'm a yearning girlie, and there's some of that too. The spice is open-door and relatively mild, I think there are three scenes total. This book is classified as Adult Fantasy Romance, but you could call it New Adult as far as maturity level. Although the characters are late 20s, I think, maybe early 30s, they are still grappling with new responsibilities. This is a fantasy romance, not romantasy so while the romance is prominent, it isn't the entirety of the book.

If you want a solid fantasy romance with an interesting world/lore, MCs who fall fast for each other, and a deeper overall fantasy storyline, Tides of Waves and Secrets is for you.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and the author for providing a review copy of this book at no cost and with no obligation. I reviewed this book voluntarily, and all opinions are my own.

Tide of Waves and Secrets
Heirs of Elydor #2
C.L. Mecca

Sir Rowan is a human and he arrives in the immortal realm of Thalassarian seeking the Queen out to speak with her as he needs the legendary Tidal Pearl. Nerys is a Thalassarian guard who is assigned as his escort because he is not allowed to walk around the palace grounds or in the palace without an escort. But Nerys finds a strange connection to Rowan that grows into an undeniable full blown attraction. The more time she spends with him the more she wants this devastatingly powerful mortal.

Trapped within the palace while the queen decides Rowan's fate, Nerys realizes her allegiances are shifting. With the tidal pearl at stake, there is only one way to protect it. And that is by challenging the Queen's crown. But as the moment comes closer Nerys and Rowan will be forced to confront a choice. A choice between loyalty to their realms or love. A love that defies the laws of mortality.

Oh my goodness! What a wild ride. Ms. Mecca does it again. This is the second book and it was as good as the first. Sir Rowan was absolutely magnificent. He went through so much with losing his grandfather and having a new role passed down. A role that he never expected to go to him. Nerys was fascinating. What she could do with water was absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed this second book and I'm really glad that I read the first as it helped me fall into the second one very quickly. If you enjoy, fantasy and magic then this is the book for you. Ms. Mecca you are fantabulous and I never tire of reading your books.

Tide of Waves and Secrets is a multi-POV tale that follows Rowan and Nerys. Rowan, a human entrusted with a quest to recover a lost artifact, must journey into the immortal realm. There, he’s placed under the watchful eye of Nerys, a formidable immortal tasked with guarding him as he seeks an audience with the Thalassarian Queen to gain access to the legendary Tidal Pearl.

This is book #2 in the Heirs of Elydor series; however, I did not read the first book and I don't think I missed out on much. My understanding is that the books are an interconnected series and each book follows a different set of characters. I thought this book had enough information about the world and magic to get by without having read the first.

I did love our FMC's, Nerys', journey and growth of coming into and accepting her power. I really enjoyed the magic and story in this book; however, I did think aspects of the plot and characters, especially the secondary characters, were underdeveloped. In general, I'm not a fan of instant attraction/love between main characters because it often skips over the growth and tension that make relationships feel earned, which is the case here.

I gave this book 2 chili peppers because there were several open door scenes, but they were vanilla.

I would recommend this book/series for people who enjoy insta-love or are new to fantasy as the magic and world were not very complex to grasp.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a copy of this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

This is the second book in the Heirs of Elydor series, following Whisper of War and Storms. While a continuation of the story in the same world, the focus for this book is on Rowan and Nerys. Given the plot carries through from book one, it is recommended you read the series in order but the details provided in this book would likely allow you to follow along.

This story involves multiple realms, and an intriguing magic system with quests and trials. This is definitely a “vibe” read, as a lot is happening in a book which is on the short side and so it can seem rushed resulting in some plot and characters being underdeveloped and some jumping around. Likely recommended for readers looking to try fantasy without a complex magic system/ fantasy world.

The MMC and FMC are forced to be together while the MMC is on a quest to obtain the royal artifact of the Thalassarian clan, the Tidal Pearl, to assist with the opening of the portal between the immortal and human realms which has been closed. During this time, the FMC realizes her true path in a kingdom that is on the verge of war. Unfortunately the relationship between the MMC and FMC was a bit too “insta-love” for my preferences, but the overall story and magic system were interesting and made it relatively easy to read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.25 stars from me

In this second installment, we follow Rowan, now acting as the human ambassador to the Thalasserian kingdom. His mission: to convince the sea-queen to allow access to a powerful artifact that could reopen the gate to Earth. Due to royal paranoia, every human is assigned a personal guardian—and Rowan’s happens to be Nerys, a fierce and gifted warrior.

Cue instant attraction. Thanks to his innate emotional sensitivity, Rowan knows he can trust her and she does the same. Nerys, who has baggage of her own, has to push past her doubts with the help of Rowan and challenge the Queen at the annual festival, stepping into a role of power she never truly wanted—but will claim, for the greater good.

The plot is again fairly linear, and while the romance has its share of “we can’t be together” longing, there’s never real tension—everything just… falls into place. I kept wondering: why does everyone fall head-over-heels within minutes? There’s no mating bond, no fated connection—so the insta-love feels a bit lazy without a stronger emotional build-up.

That said, I still had a good time. It’s an enjoyable read, more of a river than a tempest, pretty calm with a few sparkly ideas and the promise of more fun to come. (I’m already looking forward to Marek—the dashing naval captain-slash-smuggler—getting his turn in the spotlight.)

Not a literary masterpiece, but a solid addition to the series.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️

I was really excited to read book two in this series because I really loved Mev and Kaels story in book one! And let me start off this review by saying I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a Romantasy full of interesting characters, a strong but reserved FMC, a charismatic and charming MMC who loves deeply, beautiful world building, a slow burn, reverse bodyguard, forbidden romance between an immortal water magic user and a non-immortal spy human, a few spicy moments and while this can be read as a stand alone it definitely has a plot that carries over from book one.

I will say that I did enjoy Rowan and Nerys story, the insta romance was great, there banter was funny, and I enjoyed so much of watching these characters grow and develop and there was definitely more spice in Waves and Secrets, but still there was just something that made I didn’t connect with when reading Tide of Waves and Secrets. For me personally I think the pacing was just a little to slow for me in this book as well as there being a lot of new world building as beautiful as it was for me going into the second book in this series. I think I was just hoping for a faster punch into the action of things this go round. Overall I enjoyed this book, and am interested to see where things go next though!

This is not just a fantasy novel, but a Romantasy.
Rowan has one mission - to get the Queen of Thalassaria to agree to the loan of the legendary Tidal Pearl so he can unlock the gate that is currently cutting off free travel.

What he did not count on was meeting the beautiful Nerys and spending half the book in a forbidden lust fest over her. To make a move would be forbidden for both of them due to the secrets he is sworn to.

That being said, Rowan has a dirty mouth!

Very early on in the book, we know both Nerys and Rowan have strong feelings for each other. The fact that Rowan asks Nerys if she would like his fingers or tongue first gives you all the spoilers you need to know that they do take their relationship further than they should.

Added to the complication of the mission and the attraction is the threat of a challenge to the current queen, and behold, we are treated to a four-day festival in a kingdom where magic flows like the tides.

The book is written in FMC and MMC POV and alternates with each chapter.

A lot of new names, realms and kingdoms to learn, and none of them sunk in with me until a third of the way in, but we got there in the end.

A daring spy. A rebel princess. A kingdom on the brink of war and a dash of Spice giving this book a winning combination.
