Well, except for the witches, and the local werewolf pack, and the fairy princess who set up her court under the park...
Evelyn Harwin has spent the last twenty years pulling her life together. She has a business she runs, a home she owns, a coven she leads and a man she’s pretty sure she’ll spend the rest of her life with.
Kieran Shaw ran from Witch Haven when he was eighteen, leaving a mess of questions and a broken hearted Evelyn behind. When he’s called home to deal with a string of missing werewolf children, he finds himself pulled back to the woman he’s tried for two decades to forget.
While fighting to stop an unspeakable evil from rising, Kieran and Evelyn must also decide whether to risk their hearts all over again.
Evie Harwin has to wrangle her siblings, her coven, and her feelings for the handsome werewolf that skipped town with her heart not once, but twice. When Kieran rolls back into town on his motorcycle looking like all of the things that make her heart go pitter patter, she’s not sure how she will be able to resist him. Her feelings are complicated by the fact that she is in a long term relationship with a seemingly lovely man. When they have to team up to fight an existential threat, they both realize that their bond runs deeper than they ever could have imagined and it becomes clear that resisting each other is not an option.
What I loved The Harwin Sibling dynamics Evie was so adorable in her vulnerability while taking her responsibility to her family and her coven seriously Kieran and his motorcycle The pixies Kieran being just the right amount of possessive without being overbearing The interactions between Evie and Kieran’s magic The supporting cast of characters were just delightful
Honestly, there is so much to love about this one. It definitely has all of the things that I love in a paranormal romance. I really just want more of this story and cannot wait for the second installment.
Thank you Reenie Nayden for providing an ARC copy for me to review.
Come for the hottie werewolves stay for the world building, witchy family love, mysterious promises, wisecracking sass, girl friendships, will they/wont they (duh of course they will), oh and did I mention a motorcycle riding, tight white tee wearing werewolf prince??
This kick-off to hopefully a long series (10 seasons and a movie!) of intertwined supernatural friends and family romance action drama novels is an enjoyable romp through your urban fantasy top hits. We have witches and werewolves each with their own personalities and backstories that whet your appetite for more [seriously what is up with Momma Harwin? And Grainne?? She is a sexy sexy mystery]. There are many other magical and mystical creatures, rather similar to later seasons of Vampire Diaries or Supernatural, when we learned that yes, everything you’ve heard of is indeed real (and wants to sass you, stab you, or maybe make-out with you!?)
Our main characters here are one Oldest Sibling witch Evie and her teen lost love and now returned (but not reformed) Bad Boy werewolf prince Kieran. Or as I like to call him, cuddly little Kier-Bear (he would not approve) Evie is trying to to keep her town, coven, and family together, safe and happy, while Kieran and his pack are brought home on the trail of the Big Bad (who also has ties to the town AND Evie ruh -roh)
Romance, spells, hijinx, and kissing ensue. Powerful young women take the lead here with their tank top wearing muscle bound boyfriends supporting them (Ryan Atwood is that you? Welcome to Witch Haven, B!tch)
Secrets are uncovered, love is declared, windows are climbed through, what was lost may very well be found. What more could you want here?!
Step into a world that encompasses the vibes of: Gilmore Girls Charmed Vampire Diaries Teen Wolf Dawsons Creek The OC Practical Magic Being Human Kate Daniels Coyote Ugly The Breakfast Club Summer Days, Summer Nights Sisterhood of Traveling Pants Supernatural Bruce Springsteen
It is mainly dual POV (already my favorite), but very near the end we get an amazingly fun round robin of all the main character POVs which got me even more excited for the next books (especially one medium and her potential beau). It was really a masterstroke and my favorite chapter I’ve read in a while. Perfect way to give us a peek into the expanded cast and the fun we are in for in each of their stories. You’ll definitely be picking favorites.
Try this book out and, like a good plate of French Toast made with love and a little magic, it might have you levitating to the ceiling. 💕
A light and fun read especially if you’re a fan of the supernatural world. It doesn’t go in too deep and delivers the story at a fast enough pace that I really appreciate - it’s definitely a perfect middle book to read in between heavier books or if you’re in a reading slump and need something to get back to reading. I got the special edition which came with adorable character cards which helped shape what everyone looked like and made it even more enjoyable!
There are many interesting characters and for such a short book there’s obviously a lot of thought behind each one; you can almost tell that there’s a large storyboard in the background with each character’s history which makes you want to know more, so I really look forward to reading the remainder of the series as it comes out.
My only feedback as I was reading was that I felt that it could have benefited from some editing. There’s a lot of dialogues which run a bit too much. I also sometimes found it difficult to follow who was saying what especially if it’s 2 males or 2 females talking to each other (ex: she said that to her. Which one is she and which one is her?) as well as some general typos and errors etc.
Usually speaking Reenie has a very different style from what I like to read, she's fast paced, a bit chaotic and her characters love to dialogue everything a bit too much, reads like it's a screenplay which is differentfrom my more introspective preference, but in CAN'T FIGHT THE MOONLIGHT she seems to have find a perfect balance and structure in her style, the book has no major flaws and it was my funniest read this year, it's not heavy, but it's not tone-deaf about the world, the friendship in it it's awesome, the different dynamics are interesting, and you can't choose just one favorite character easily cause they are actually all great.
The moral dillema of the main character reminds me a lot of the play "Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists" and I love how it was solved.
Everyone is equal parts talking and reflecting in their head and trying to be aware of their surroundings, I cannot sell it enough. It's the kind of book that's also fun to chat about and laugh with friends. If you are on a reading slump specially, this is your book!
By the third part it gets a little bit confusing in the dialogues, but nothing that harms the experience in anyway, English is only my second language and I had no problems with it.
Conan, Alonso and Josiah are probably my favorite characters, with Ethan, Gail, Isaac and Travis very close, but there's no one I really didn't like.
I'm specially intrigued by Alonso and Conan. I love that Ethan and Isaac are a couple, I want to HUG THEM so badly, but I have a dream and it's Alonso having a man as partner, someone that rocks his life, mess up guardian Catholic boy a bit, and I say this as a Catholic queer, so call it self-serving. Conan on the side has my favorite kind of powers and duality, and he delivers my favorite quotes in this book, wouldn't change a thing about him.
Thank you Reenie Nayden for providing me with an ARC
This was such a fun, cozy, small town, paranormal romance, and the perfect break I needed after some of my more recent reads. The writing is fast paced, and I loved the expansive magical world that Nayden created. Evie and Kieran were so great together and their banter and snark is so well done. I truly love how each character, from each member of the pack, to Evie’s siblings, and potential love interests, have depth and intention, and are not just there to move the plot along. The big fight at the end felt a little rushed, but that didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. I can’t wait for book two!
The plot of this book is fantastic, and I adored the main characters. However -- this book is sorely in need of an editor. There were many times I had to go back and try to figure out what the sentence was supposed to be because of so many commas and misspellings. I appreciate that I was reading an ARC, but this felt more like a beta read. Additionally, the 'open door' love scenes were very brief and glossed over. Not nearly as spicy as I was expecting.
All that being said, the world the author created is incredible and I hope to read future books in the series.
