Until lurking obsessions force them out of the dark.
Tanner Kennedy built his walls from the ground up twenty years ago.
Sturdy, unbreakable walls that have kept Callie Anderson out just fine—until circumstance pushed her closer to his boundary.
She’s the only one who seems to have the tools to break ground and rebuild, but Tanner won’t make it easy for her.
Callie threatens everything Tanner has known for decades. Sanctuary. Peace. Safety.
But is that ever really what he felt? Or is that exactly what he’s been protecting himself from this whole time?
When a prominent new client needs his team’s help—and the work comes loaded with secrets and demons of its own—Tanner realizes the line between peace and destruction can become blurred.
And someone else can see it all too clearly.
In a world where you never really know the people you think you do, Tanner has to make the decision to trust.
Trust himself, or lose Callie to a world of doubt.
Caterpillars by Sydney Taylor is a slow-burn, emotionally charged office romance that follows Tanner Kennedy, the brooding Chief of Security at Columbia Consulting, and Callie Anderson, a confident and persistent Executive Assistant who knows exactly what she wants—and deserves.
Tanner, haunted by past trauma and convinced he’s incapable of protecting those he loves, has kept his distance from Callie despite his undeniable attraction. Meanwhile, his cold demeanor has left Callie believing he despises her—until fate intervenes and she’s reassigned as his assistant. Forced into close proximity, their simmering tension erupts into a compelling dance of banter, longing, and emotional vulnerability.
The metaphor of caterpillars is beautifully woven throughout the narrative, symbolizing not only the stages of their evolving relationship but also their personal journeys of healing and transformation. A suspenseful subplot involving mysterious notes, unexpected flowers, and a dangerous new client adds an extra layer of intrigue, keeping the stakes high and the pages turning.
While some tropes may feel familiar and the cover design doesn’t quite do the story justice, the chemistry, character depth, and emotional payoff make this a standout. If you enjoy office romances with angst, forced proximity, and a touch of suspense, Caterpillars deserves a spot on your TBR.
This is Tanner and Callie’s story. Tanner has built the walls around his heart so high they are impenetrable and should be able to keep Callie out. Callie is now working as Tanner assistant, and she is slowly breaking down his defences, and when they have a new client, he is determined to keep her safe and protected at all costs. This is a well written action packed, easy to read, emotionally charged story, with drama, suspense, intrigue, danger, obsession, enemies / lovers, grumpy / sunshine, opposites attract, tension, forced proximity, workplace romance, secrets, trust, humor, witty banter, healing, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and unpredictable, addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.
I was super impressed with this being a debut author. The story had a lot of layers and the author did a great job weaving them in. I liked the suspense piece. I liked how vulnerable the MMC was and the growth he had. Overall I enjoyed it!
Emotional rotisserie that slow burns the characters on a will they/won't they skewer The result is a juicy, perfectly made story for angsty readers. One thing that stands out is the beautiful metaphorical use of the Caterpillar effect
“Caterpillars, that’s what my mom calls the early stages of a crush. When you feel like there’s something there, but they’re just beginning to wiggle around in your stomach. They explore every inch of your belly, sending goosebumps over your skin and tickling at your insides, before finding the perfect spot to wrap themselves in cocoons, safely tucked away and snuggled in for the short sleep until they burst out and flutter around as brand-new butterflies.”
The Blurb pulled me in, it gave the impression of dark underlying themes that I'm a sucker for. It's not dark in that sense. It's more of a hero tortured by his own failings to protect his loved ones, hence his push & pull with his own desires Tanner Kennedy, the brooding Chief of Security at Columbia Consulting, and Callie Anderson, a confident and persistent Executive Assistant are forced to work in close proximity. she's his new assistant assignee and he's the GRUMPIEST boss she's had the displeasure of working. His constant rudeness and assholery even dares to dim her super positive and cheerful persona, like an eclipse. In short his darkness threatens to swallow her light.
“ I’ve built my proverbial walls into a stone fortress. A moat surrounds me to further prevent Callie Anderson from swimming through and sneaking past the inevitable cracks in the stone. Now it feels like my fortress is a sandcastle, slowly disintegrating and washing away in the waves of each smile, each look, each word.”
There's a stalker thrown in for a good measure. Side characters contribute towards the story but somehow I felt I missed the I back stories and was left scratching my head. maybe it's part of a series The slow burn dragged on a lot. For a professions chief of security, he sure had hard time controlling his moods, I felt. Good story for those who liked their heart twisted slowly “4 stars for tulips” Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻
This book knocked me out. I was SO SURE I had it all figured out and then WHAM! Sydney Taylor handed me my ass with a twisteroo I absolutely did not see coming.
Besides the top notch mystery, Caterpillars really impressed me with the banter. I read a lot of indie romance and 9 times out of 10 I find something enjoyable in a book that gets me to the end even if it has some problems. One of the problems I see all the time is unrealistic and awkward dialogue and banter—things actual people just wouldn’t say, which makes it clear the writer is trying too hard. Not here. The banter in particular was impressive. It felt natural and it was legitimately funny, which is often not the case, I hate to say.
The spice was also really good. Like I said, I can push through a lot of problems in a book because I love indie romance, but I have to admit that a lot of the time the spicy scenes are a little cringe. Still enjoyable, but cringe nonetheless. Not in Caterpillars. Sydney Taylor did a fabulous job writing the spice so that it was titillating without being embarrassing, and definitely effective 😏.
I really enjoyed the character arcs that Callie and Tanner went through, and their journey to finally get on the same page and go all in on the relationship, and I loved all the side characters. The camaraderie between everyone the MCs worked with was really nice and entertaining. It made me want to work in an office, which is something I have never said in my entire life and will never say again.
Overall, Caterpillars was a perfect, spicy workplace romance, with the added bonus of thriller/suspense vibes and an excellent mystery. I’m really looking forward to the next one in the series.
Also, because I’m petty, I love that the title is unique and not the usual riff on the tropes you’ll find. If you read a lot of indie romance you know what I mean.
An addictive, emotional enemies-to-lovers romance that completely delivers. Caterpillars surprised me in all the best ways. The tension, the slow-burn build, and the emotional depth between Tanner and Callie make this an unforgettable read. Sydney Taylor does a great job balancing angst with tenderness, and every shift in their relationship feels earned. I loved the workplace dynamic, the sharp banter, and the way both characters are forced to confront their pasts to grow.
⚠️ Spoilers: Tanner’s emotional walls — built over decades of pain and regret — finally start cracking once Callie pushes past his defenses. Their forced closeness on the new client project brings out all their unresolved chemistry. As secrets about Tanner’s past come to light, Callie becomes the first person he actually lets in, which makes their relationship feel even more intense. Callie’s own fears and insecurities come to the surface too, and watching both characters evolve (“caterpillars to something new”) is the core of the story. Their final shift into fully trusting each other is incredibly satisfying, especially when Tanner finally chooses vulnerability over self-protection and commits to Callie openly and passionately.
Overall: A beautifully written, emotional, slow-burn romance with strong character growth and fantastic chemistry. Easy 5 stars.

Grumpy-sunshine trope with energetic assistant and grumpy boss.
Callie and Tanner's story starts when Callie tries to hit on Tanner, an executive at her job, at a work function. He, however, brushes her off and avoids her for a year.
Fast forward a year and Callie is assigned to work with Tanner. She still harbors feelings for him but knows that he doesn't feel the same. She is dating a fella she isn't too crazy about and then gets the cold shoulder from Tanner at work. Tanner, on the other hand, knows that the only way to keep Callie safe is to make sure she stays at arm's length. He feels he's let everyone down and causes anyone around him to hurt.
Throughout the book, Tanner tries to keep Callie safe from afar and pushes her away when she gets too close. The whole book is about him doing the work to accept that he cannot control what happens to everyone.
The characters have good development and both are very likable. Lots of stories have the female character burdened by trauma but in this story, it was the male character. Story had a good flow and I didn't see the twist coming.
The title is a cute take on early relationship feels.
POV: Dual Spice: 2 out of 5 Low Angst No OWD/Little OMD Suspense - Just enough to balance the rest of the book
After receiving a copy of this book for free, I chose to write this review
Who knows me is aware I normally only read dark(er) romance but the blurb of this spoke to me so I thought why the heck not?! And I can honestly say I loved this book so much! The grumpy x sunshine, workplace romance with the strong FMC and the tortured hero MMC has a lot a lot of mystery in it which of course comes to light during the course of this book. Him wanting to keep everyone safe her not wanting to lose her independence clash a lot when they are forced to work together and need to find a good compromise on how to respect each other in what is needed to make this ‘partnership’ work. The metaphor of the caterpillars and the use of tulips made me love these little details even more. And the biggest question is will he be able to work on himself and lower his ‘walls’ to get what they both want?! The banter also with the other characters in this book made it feel like they were a part of a big chosen family with the dysfunction, fights and love that comes with it all! Because I don’t want to give too much away I have chosen to keep it as vague as possible on what actually happens because I am to afraid to give spoilers on this beautiful butterfly. I can only say you should really read this book! It will not disappoint!
Yes, it is late, but I wanted to get my review for this arc up ASAP because this book is absolutely beautiful!
Caterpillars is an enemies to lovers, grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, boss x employee romance between Callie and Tanner.
Callie is so amazing and strong and resilient, I wish I could see the world the way she does. She’s so gentle and loving, because she knows how much darkness exists in the world, so she does what she can to bring in some of the light. I loved how she never judged Tanner for his pain, she only loved him through it. We all need someone like that, especially when we struggle with our own darkness.
Tanner has felt his fair share of pain, and I really empathized with him throughout the book. I understood why he closed himself off from feelings like love and hope, but I also loved that he’s found a reason to want those things again as he falls for Callie. He appreciates her and protects her and loves her endlessly, and readers will love him just as much as she does.
Thank you so much to @sydneytaylorauthor and @theauthor.agency for this stunning arc! I’m completely in love with these characters, and I can’t wait to see what Sydney comes up with next.
This romance suspense novel pulls you into a gripping blend of emotional healing, intense chemistry, and spine-tingling danger. At its core is Tanner—a man haunted by past trauma, struggling to rebuild his life while learning to let someone in. The emotional depth of his journey adds a raw, human element to the suspense, making his transformation both believable and compelling.
The tension escalates as Tanner and his love interest begin to feel the unmistakable sensation of being watched. As lurking obsessions surface and hidden desires are dragged into the light, the story gains a dark, seductive edge that keeps you turning pages.
When a high-profile client brings new work to Tanner’s team—along with a trove of buried secrets—the stakes become personal. The blurred line between peace and destruction adds urgency to every choice he makes. In a world full of masked intentions and unspoken threats, Tanner is forced to confront one ultimate question: who can you truly trust?
This novel delivers the perfect balance of heart-pounding suspense and emotionally rich romance. If you're looking for a story that keeps you guessing while also tugging at your heart, this one is not to be missed.
I received ARC of this book but unfortunately this book didn't resonate with me. I really tried to read it, however I couldn't push myself more than 44% of the book. Hence, I chose to DNF this book. I am sorry but for me, the pace of this book was so slow. I usually have no problem with slow pace books but this book had a not engaging slow pace and more like flat to boring pace. The MMC was so weird with how he pushed FMC so many times. I understood little bit why he done it but I didn't like that he hurt the heroine in the result. The entire working place interactions were also giving me an irk. There were so many side characters but there were no contexts on how and why they close to each other beside the working relation. The suspense part also was also being dragged too much. There were hints of it but no concrete exposure even when it was already 44% into the book. I am sure there will be readers who will love this book but at this moment, that reader is not me. I may try to give this book a chance in the future when I am in the mood of slow pace book with a touch of suspense.
Nevertheless, thank you to Sydney Taylor and The Author Agency for the ARC.
Thank you to The Author Agency and Sydney Taylor for my advance copy of Caterpillars in exchange for my honest review. It's out today‼️ . . Where do I begin because this book is jam packed with everything! Romance. Spice. Suspense. Enemies to lovers. Forced proximity. Slow burn. Secrets. Grumpy x Sunshine. Boss x employee. Rescue. Yes, yes, and YES! . . Callie tries to pick up Tanner at a work party and gets rejected. No big deal...until she becomes his secretary a year later. We find out Tanner is carrying a lot of baggage and see those closest to him try and help out. While this is building and the sexual tension is through the roof, we have Callie being harassed by an ex and seemingly being stalked by him. We also have a new client come in for a job at the office, but something seems off. Listen...the last 40% of this book is a wild downhill slide you can't stop! . . If you're looking for a romantic suspense with a rescue, pick up this book immediately! Solid 4 stars from me!
For romance readers seeking depth and emotional honesty, Caterpillars is a must-read. This four-star novel captivates with its powerful portrayal of trust, past hurts, and complex emotions, leaving a lasting impression.
If you adore a slow-burn office romance, this needs to be on your summer reading list! It centers on the delightful contrast between a bubbly, optimistic heroine(Callie) and a brooding hero(Tanner) with a traumatic past. Their journey begins with charmingly awkward encounters and witty banter, gradually revealing an undeniable pull. You'll be captivated by the strong character development, the seamless blend of humor and suspense, and the intense chemistry and tension that make their transition from acquaintances to lovers impossible to put down. The excellent writing and storyline make this an absolutely good read!
The Caterpillars didn't make sense to me until about a third of the way through the book so just be patient.
Tanner keeps everyone at arms length, he feels like they’re safer that way. If people get too close to him, they get hurt. Then he met Callie. Immediately he was attracted to her but he knew he had to keep away, to keep her safe. For a year that’s worked but now she is his assistant and he can’t help but get closer to her. Callie does her best to reassure him, to help him but when they’re both keeping secrets from each other and trusting the wrong people, will they have a chance to work through the trauma Tanner has or is it already too late?
I really enjoyed this! I’m starting to like a good security romance and this was a refreshing change that it wasn’t with a client for once! I adore Tanner, he’s so wounded and broken but also fierce and protective. Such a vibe 😍😍
This is an ARC review and all opinions are my own. Thank you to The Author Agency for the ARC copy of this book and for the opportunity to read and review it
I personally love this book! Interesting 'Caterpillar' concept, where it takes you to a whole "butterflies in the stomach" to another level.
A compelling office romance centering the story of two characters who couldn’t be more different—FMC, the bubbly, optimistic sunshine figure, and MMC, the emotionally guarded and brooding man with a traumatic past. Their interactions are initially awkward, filled with playful banter and underlying tension, but as the story progresses, it’s clear that there’s more to their connection than meets the eye.
Love the writing, storyline, strong character development, good balance of humor and suspense with powerful chemistry and tension.
Absolutely good read for fan of slow-burn office romances, where FMC and MMC’s journey from awkward acquaintances to lovers will get you turn the pages for more!
This book has everything you could want in a romance! The grumpy broody man that grovels so well 🫠😏 and has a delightfully dirty mouth! A bit of suspense and mystery and an FMC that’s strong enough to be sure of herself and what she deserves. Tanner runs a security company and with that has some emotional baggage on him. He refuses to close the distance between him and Callie but keeps her safe, is always protecting her. But won’t commit to her romantically. Callie is fierce and knows what she wants and isn’t scared to go after it. She tries numerous times to get Tanner to notice her as more than a coworker but as far as she knows he’s just a grumpy ass to her. I just love the 2 of them together 🤩 it takes Tanner a bit to figure out his issues and a few people he has to knock out of their way 😉 but I adore him and their ending together! Such a fantastic summer read!
Tanner and Callie’s story is a well written story. The whole concept behind the caterpillar was well thought out. The characters, the plot and suspense turn into a page turner. Tanner kept giving Callie mixed signals. One minute hot the next cold. He couldn’t get out of his own head. Tortured by what he deemed as failure to protect those he loved/cared about caused him to shut fine his feelings. Callie went through things too but she grew from her losses. She is strong and incredibly independent. She pushes all of Tanner’s buttons. I enjoyed the growth of their relationship.
As Tanner battled his internal demons, he had to protect Callie from an unknown danger.
This story pulled me in right from the start. A slow-burn, emotionally charged workplace romance wrapped in mystery and vulnerability. Tanner, the brooding Chief of Security, and Callie, his confident and determined new assistant, have a tension that burns off the page. Their chemistry simmers beneath layers of grief, guilt, and unspoken longing, and when those walls finally crack, it’s deeply satisfying.
The metaphor of caterpillars is used so beautifully; a symbol of transformation and healing that mirrors both of their journeys. Between the emotional depth, a hint of suspense, and a touch of danger, this book delivered a perfect blend of angst and heart. It’s tender, tense, and addictive. A must-read for anyone who loves a grumpy x sunshine office romance with genuine emotion and slow-burn payoff. 🦋
Why you will love this book: 🔥enemies to lovers 🔥forced proximity 🔥workplace romance 🔥tortured hero 🔥boss/employee 🔥grumpy sunshine 🔥big city 🔥rescue romance 🔥romantic suspense
Tanner’s walls were built to last—but Callie never needed permission to break through. She’s bold, unshakable, and knows exactly what (and who) she wants. Their chemistry sizzles beneath years of buried desire and emotional armor. With secrets unraveling and danger closing in, this slow-burn romance blends tension, steam, and heart in all the right ways. A moody, magnetic read that proves some obsessions are worth the risk.
I received a free ARC of this book and this review is only my opinion.
Love finding a new author! This is a new author for me. This novel did not let me down. From the first chapters this novel captured my attention and kept it for the entire novel. I love a good work place novel with a grumpy boss and sunshiney heroine. I loved Callie and Tanner's story. Tanner has been thru so much, this novel took me on a wild ride. Even though Tanner pushed Callie away for part of the novel, I loved their chemistry. This novel kept me on the edge of my seat guessing what was coming next. I loved watching Tanner's walls and defenses come down and open himself up to Callie. Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down. I look forward to see what this author has coming next.
Didn’t feel it: Whilst the premise of this book was good, I had a hard time connecting with both the story and the characters. I found the pacing to be slow and everything was drawn out. There was some suspense and intrigue, however it wasn't overly captivating. Unfortunately instead of feeling the chemistry organically between Callie and Tanner, the author just kind of told the reader that it was there. I also personally didn't like the way Tanner interacted with Callie for most of the book and whilst I appreciated that he had some issues from the past to deal with, he was just so rude and hard to warm up to. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Caterpillars is filled with all the grumpy/sunshine, work relationship, suspense, and banter that will have you hooked on Tanner and Callie’s story. Callie is now working as Tanner’s assistant and trying to figure him out since all she seems to see is his annoyance and hatred for her. Tanner is determined to keep himself locked down because of his past and won’t risk anything. However, having Callie now working with him and the fortress he has built around himself starts to crumble. Then add in a new client and all the secrets and drama that starts to unravel the more time they spend working and dangerous situations starts to occur. Callie and Tanner take us on a suspenseful ride that will have you looking for answers to what’s happening, who’s behind it, and all while hoping that Tanner and Callie will just give in already and figure things out. Though for these two, that doesn’t seem possible. Read and find out if Tanner and Callie can push past his walls or if they’re doomed from the start.
I loved every single thing about Caterpillars by Sydney Taylor. From the amazing characters to the churning plot to the wondering what could possibly happen next; it was all fantastic. The slow burn, enemies to lovers relationship between Callie and Tanner was exquisitely written. And the depth that all of the characters had was wonderful. I genuinely enjoyed this book from start to finish. I didn’t want to put it down. This is definitely a book I will read again and again because this story is one that deserves to be remembered.
Thank you to The Author Agency & the author for the free ebook in exchange for my honest opinions and review.
Caterpillars is a workplace romance with some thrilling suspense. I love this book so much! I was hooked and captivated from beginning to end! I couldn't put this book down. I love Callie and Tanner's story! Tanner is the chief of security who has dealt with some past trauma. He keeps to himself and has trouble opening up to others. Callie is his receptionist at the company. She is the light to his darkness. She encourages him to open and trust, so they can be happy together. I love the suspense throughout the story! "And the butterflies are off. Their delicate, vibrant wings flutter against my rib cage, tickling my stomach and chest, before finding the sturdiest landing on my heart and creating a home."
Only a few chapters in and I knew this was gonna be a fun time, love how everyone gave Tanner a hard time , the bluntness of all the characters were refreshing, no beating around the bush. The suspense aspect was great , really enjoyed that .
The title Caterpillars makes so much sense now.
Considering this is a debut author, I'm quite impressed. If you like slow burn, grumpy/ sunshine, office romance, he falls first 👌🏻.

I could not put this book down!!! If you’re looking for a steamy romance with a side of suspense, this is the book for you. Caterpillars is absolutely beautifully written and captivated me from the first page, until the last. I loved learning about the characters, seeing the romance develop and being able to picture each scene that was so well-described. Sydney’s first book has me hooked and I cannot wait for more!
I thought the book was ok. I would still recommend to the right person.
If you like Suspense, grumpy sunshine, protective MMC, enemies to lovers yet also slightly insta love/lust at first sight, but can’t act on certain feelings due to past trauma (sorry, I don’t want to give away any spoilers) then I’d give this book a try!
