Bravery as a Practice, Not a Trait
The Bravery Effect does something most self-help books fail to do: it makes the science feel personal. Jill Schulman wraps evidence-based positive psychology in a parable format that lets readers absorb the concepts without feeling like they're sitting in a lecture. The story moves at a pace that keeps you engaged, and the lessons land because you experience them alongside the characters rather than being told what to think.
What I appreciated most is how seamlessly Schulman integrates the research. The three-part framework — brave mindset, bold action, courageous connections — never feels bolted on. It emerges naturally from the narrative, which is genuinely hard to pull off. As someone who works in positive psychology, I noticed the science was handled with care and accuracy, which matters.
The Audible version is excellent. Corey Snow brings just the right warmth and clarity to the narration — never overdramatic, always in service of the story. It's the kind of audiobook you can listen to on a walk and find yourself pausing to take notes.
If you've ever talked yourself out of something important because it felt too risky or uncomfortable, this book is for you. Schulman makes a compelling case that bravery isn't a fixed trait — it's a muscle. And she gives you the tools to start using it immediately.

“The Bravery Effect” is a parable that teaches the latest science on how we process and can grow to be brave. The parable is not a long parable and an enjoyable and relatable tale. Every step along the way, it is easy to see yourself in the story, no matter what your position is in life.

The audiobook is read by Corey Snow. His voice is easy to listen to and quite engaging.

There are several principles of this book that stood out to me, but toward the very beginning, you learn about the power of the word “yet”. That lesson alone is worth the price of the book. But there is so much more.

This book would be great for middle schoolers and high schoolers, as well as the intended business professional. In a day and age when anxiety is at epic proportions, this lesson is powerful and can have a lasting impact. Well done, Jill Schulman.

The Bravery Effect by Jill Schulman really resonated with me during a season of juggling a lot, working toward my degree, helping run our lawn care business, raising teenagers, and trying to keep my creativity alive while experimenting with new things. This book reminded me that bravery doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic; it often shows up in the quiet decision to keep going.

I loved how approachable and practical this book is. Schulman reframes courage as something built through small, intentional actions, which helped me recognize that many of my everyday choices already require bravery. Her encouragement to try, experiment, and allow yourself to be a beginner again was especially motivating as someone trying to stay creatively engaged.

This was an empowering, relatable read that left me feeling encouraged and validated right where I am. A great book for anyone navigating full seasons of life and choosing courage anyway.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

Wow! I loved this book!

Filled with insight and proven science and presented in a way that’s anything but boring.

The author structured this book as a parable- a unique and engaging way to share their research.

As someone who suffers often from Imposter Syndrome, this book felt like a warm hug, like a kind and wise story from a trusted mentor.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read this book (thank you NetGalley for ARC access). I foresee myself turning to this audiobook- at a nice and easy 5.5 hours- whenever I need a boost, or are feeling stuck, or are paralyzed by fear.

Go ahead, step into discomfort.

I rarely read nonfiction, but this one is actually hooking. I was curious about how bravery could affect my life, and this book answered a lot of that. It was quite an eye-opener and put a lot of things into perspective for me. The narration was excellent. The tone was just right, matching the light-hearted style in which the book is written.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who's working on themselves because it will definitely help you reflect on yourself and life.
