Elevate With Me - the title says it all. A romance that blossoms from a chance encounter (and an embarrassing scene or three) inside the apartment building’s lift.
Haylee ‘Red Cheeks’ is a 25-year-old Brit - love the British rep, of course - with overbearing parents, a supportive, cheerleader-type best friend, a fabulous furry sidekick with an attitude to die for, and, like most romance heroines, a fair share of relationship trauma.
Please note: Haylee’s backstory includes mentions of past trauma, mental health struggles, family turmoil, and consent, so please be mindful of that before diving in.
Enter Luca - ‘Mr. Umbrella’ - a 32-year old Italian-American who brings all the warmth of Italian cooking, loves his Nonni, is close with his family, and honestly? I don’t know what’s going on with my reads lately, but I’m here for all the green-flag book boyfriends.
And Luca? He did not disappoint. Here to save the day and bring out the best in our girl, he may come off a little overprotective at times, second guessing his own motives due to Haylee’s initial responses, but he always tries to be a supportive, encouraging gentleman.
Can I just say: I will never look at meatballs the same again after that scene - think Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in Ghost, but in the kitchen!
My only niggle - and while I completely understand why she is the way she is - there were moments when Haylee felt a little too scared to let her true feelings for Luca show. There’s reason to be timid and cautious, of course, but sometimes it felt a bit overdone.
This is one of those books where you can picture every scene playing out on the big screen. It has all the makings of a hilariously adorable romcom: fantastic chemistry, snappy one-liners, hilarious antics, and sweet undertones. A real feel good romance that will have you kicking your feet.
Yes, it follows a predictable outcome, and yes, we’re all rooting for it, but the relationship development was written in a much more natural, believable way than most forced romances. It offers this lovely sense of realism - that maybe, just maybe, someone special shows up when you least expect it. (Yes, I’m a hopeless romantic, single as they come, and totally here for this sentiment!)
I also really appreciated that the spice stayed behind closed doors. Now, I’m a smut girly through and through, but I didn’t feel like I was missing out at all - it actually emphasised the authentic, grounded tone the author was going for.
The ending leaves the door open for a second book, potentially Glen’s story? but I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where Victoria Liiv takes us next.
If you’re after a comforting, lovely, lighthearted, and fun read, Elevate With Me is the perfect pick.
