They can't stop what's coming.

Halfwing Siobhan Eirwensa is struggling to reconcile the past with her newfound loyalties. When she learns her father is fighting for his life as a captive of the Arena, she is determined to rescue him. But she has much to learn about trust.

As Asher and Siobhan work toward solutions, they uncover Ryn's newest plan-one that will lead to full-blown civil war if he isn't stopped. They're running out of time.

And beneath it all lurks an unforeseen threat that will shatter life as they know it.

Catherine Witzaney spent much of her childhood immersed in Middle Earth, Narnia, and Tortall. At the age of seven, she discovered the magic of creating her own worlds through the written word, and has been writing stories ever since.

As a homeschooler with parents who loved to read, she grew up steeped in the historical fiction of G. A. Henty and Rosemary Sutcliff, which bestowed on her a greatly oversized vocabulary for which she was often teased. As an adult, she can now blame her verbosity on the handy excuse of being an author.

She resides in a lovely town in central Alberta, Canada, and is happily married to her knight in shining armour who flies helicopters instead of dragons. When she isn’t writing, she is likely to be found teaching piano, doting on her numerous nieces and nephews, or striving to keep her two birds out of mischief.

A great sequel to Wingless!
I really enjoyed continuing the tale of Asher, and now a POV character, Siobhan. Asher's guilt-filled character arc was relatable and sympathetic. Siobhan's prejudice and finding a place where she belonged was also well written.
The book also felt more fast paced, even if it was similar to the other one. I think it's because there's more suspense in this one, making me read to the very end to see if anyone would survive! Excellently executed.
The twists were fantastic, and this one wrapped up in a way that made me wonder if there is another book or if they will live in the satisfactory ending.
Overall, a great MG fantasy for fans of R.J. Anderson.
Content Warnings: PG level violence. No cussing and no romance.

5 stars!

This book was recently published, but I've had the honor and the perk of being familiar with the story between its covers as a beta reader for the author. I had read a previous draft of this book at least a year ago at this point, so some things were a bit fuzzy, but it was really so enjoyable to rediscover.

Can I just say that Witzaney is just a magician when it comes to world-building and fleshing out her characters? It's all so distinct and almost palpable - you can really sense what things must be like in the atmosphere and connect to the struggles being faced.
Can I also just say that Witzaney wrote the emotional healing/facing your demons part of the story so delicately well? Gosh! As an adult, I felt like she was able to put things similar to what I've struggled with so simply that I was able to grow from reading this book. Not to mention, I liked how the ending didn't feel like an author rushing to tie up loose ends. As a series, she let the loose ends exist because 1) some things that happen between people can't be easily resolved and 2) we can have hope for that to happen in the following book(s).

It was also cool to see how my advice impacted the story and to see my name in the acknowledgments! 🥰 I'm so honored!

I'm so ready for book #3, which I may or may not be a beta reader for 😉

Clanless by Catherine Witzaney is a good short fantasy read for a younger audience. Most of the characters all have distinct personalities which I enjoyed. I loved how it made you think about the very thin line between what right and wrong and weather doing a wrong thing with the right motives is okay. I must say the ending was very abrupt, and I couldn't really tell witch plots were the main ones and which were just side plots. I think I would have liked this book more if I was younger but I still enjoyed it. I recommend this book for ages around 9-12 depending on what the reader can read and likes to read. This book was clean (which I loved) but I wouldn't have minded a small sup-plot of romance between main characters, but maybe that's just me. Overall I give it like a 3.5 star in my opinion.

In this sequel Catherine Witzaney has written a another great fantasy picking right up where Wingless left off. Clanless starts off with Asher still in the Bat Colony determined to make things better. But he is dealing heavy guilt from his part in poisoning the Bat Colony water supply, even though he was forced to act in order to save his sister and friend.
The story follows the continuing struggle and discrimination between the Pures and the Halfwings. Asher and Siobhan join with a secret group of Pures who wish to have fair treatment of all sprites in the Bat Colony. Tensions are rising and tremors begin shaking the entire cavern city with increasing destruction.
There’s a satisfying resolution that brings forgiveness, redemption, caring, reuniting friendship, self-sacrifice, and true courage all into play.

Bats, bees, hornets, dragonflies, butterflies – all manner of winged creatures inhabit the Wingless Cycle. In addition, they all have special Talents, from Healing to Speed to Mind Reading to Teleportation and a ton of things in between. Readers who enjoy fantasy will be amazed by the world Catherine Witzaney has created even as they empathize with the main character, Asher who is wingless.
But the world is far from an idyllic one. Prejudices and acts of aggression between the Bats and the Clanless are escalating toward a civil war and Asher is right in the middle of it,
Keenly aware of how his earlier actions inadvertently contributed to the division, Asher desperately works to promote peace among the various factions. At the same time he is trying to learn how to forgive himself.

A very important thing to keep in mind is when you read, a quality story should top all else. Clanless, book two in the Wingless cycle, definitely fits into that category!
I loved the thrill of surprise having two point-of-view characters when Wingless had only one, which doubled the stakes and helped me understand the vast and mysterious world of the Sprites.
With a satisfying ending and relatable characters, along with values of selflessness, forgiveness, and acceptance, this made for a largely inspiring and treasured book.
I highly recommend the Wingless cycle!

Wingless (book 1 of the series) was good, Clanless is better. It sucked me in from the start and kept me interested with plenty of action, interesting characters and positive growth. I can't wait to read book three!

An excellent follow up to the first book in the series, Wingless. And I really like this length for a fantasy book...some fantasy books are too long to appeal to some of my readers.
