The first autobiography from legendary Welsh rugby player George North
George North is a true legend of Welsh rugby, an integral part of the national team for fourteen years.
Recently retired from the international game, he is the third-most-capped player in Welsh history with 121 Test appearances, the youngest player ever to reach 100 caps, and the second-highest try scorer with 47.
At club level, he has played for the Scarlets, Northampton and Ospreys, and latterly Provence in France.

Zoals Tendai ‘The Beast’ Mtawarira altijd herinnerd zal worden aan het alleen omhooghouden van Anton Bresler, die naar achteren viel bij het ontvangen van een kick-off daar heeft George North zijn eigen hoogtepunt. Tijdens de British & Irish tour naar Australië in 2013 pakte hij Israel Folau op en slingerde hem over zijn schouder terwijl hij zelf in balbezit was. North was pas 21 jaar en het voorbeeld van de grote, sterke spelers die sinds Jona Lomuh overal op de wing opdoken waar we nu weer terug lijken te gaan naar snelle, wendbare, maar vooral relatief kleine spelers als Cheslin Kolbe en Louis Bielle-Biarrey.
North’s carriere ging als een komeet, vooral als je bedankt dat hij uit een gebied in Wales komt waar rugby absoluut geen ‘hotbed’ is. Op zijn achttiende debuteerde hij voor Wales tegen regerend wereldkampioen Zuid-Afrika met twee tries. George Philip North werd weliswaar geboren in Yorkshire, maar verhuisde met zijn familie naar Anglesey in noordwest Wales waar zijn moeder vandaan komt. Hij deelt het boek apart in, elk hoofdstuk duidt een reis aan naar een volgende stad of dorp op weg naar Cardiff. We leren George kennen als een serieuze, wat introverte jongen die volledig in zijn sport op gaat. Voor jongeren die dezelfde ambitie hebben als North biedt zijn verhaal zeker inspiratie en zijn eerlijkheid over de mentale problemen die hij heeft zijn ontwapenend. Vooral de manier waarop hij vertelt dat hij beseft dat hij alles bereikt heeft door hard werken beviel me bijzonder goed.
Wat ik wel vervelend vind, en dat is vaker zo bij sporters in boeken maar vooral in interviews, het spreken in de tweede persoon enkelvoud. Het ‘je’ in plaats van ‘ik’ is helaas gemeengoed geworden, maar ik vind het vooral lui en een beetje dom. In No Other Place gebruikt ghostwriter Tom Fordyce (toch een gerenommeerd schrijver) de ‘ik’ en ‘jij’ door elkaar en dat is voor mij een belemmering om lekker door te lezen. Maar als je dat geen punt vindt, dan leest de autobiografie van de speler die 121 keer voor Wales uitkwam en drie tests voor de Lions speelde lekker weg.
Dit boek bestel je natuurlijk bij je lokale boekhandel, zo steunen we de middenstand.

Honest, genuine and sincerely funny at times, what a brilliant look into a real icon of Welsh rugby who was part of the best squads Wales has produced in decades.
For a guy who hails from not far from my neck of the woods up north, he achieved a hell of a lot despite the argued disadvantages this can bring in the Welsh rugby structure. Hard work pays off.

Enjoyed it - he has one of the better ghostwriters and it shows it in the writing. Would have liked a bit more about his time at the Scarlets, but overall one of the more interesting (and often funny) Welsh rugby autobiographies. Da iawn, George!

I have enjoyed reading No Other Place. There are some good inspirational pointers in the book and also funny moments. Well worth the read.
