When I picked up this book, I really wanted to give it five stars. I spent two summer interning for one of the CCBL teams, and have spent my lifetime going to games at all ten parks. But unfortunately, this is not a five star book. After introducing the coaching and management staff, the book becomes mostly brief game recaps. There are a couple good personal stories, such as the head coach’s career journey and a player coming off of recent surgery, but I would have liked more. When he mentions players or volunteers, his lists often stretch to a paragraph length, which can be hard to stay engaged with. And lastly, while I love a good cup of chowder, a reference to a restaurant in the respective town is forced into almost every chapter, which was fun at the beginning, but grew repetitive. If you are a Brewster fan, I’m sure there are some fun highlights and heartbreaks to be relived through reading, but if you are new to the Cape League I’d recommend starting with “The Last Best League” over “Cape Dreams”.
